Capturing HD with Canon HV20

Anyway to capture HD with a Canon HV20 using PE4? When the settings in my HV20 are on HDV and I change the capture settings in PE4 to HDV Capture 1080i, the capture is choppy, the playback is choppy and the vid turns out funky. Now that YouTube offers HD 1280 x 720, I'm trying to actually use my HD vid cam to upload some HD vids.
Any thoughts?
thanks!

Try capturing with HDVsplit.

  • What are the settings for capturing video from Canon HV20

    Hi All,
I want to capture video from Canon HV20 with Premiere Elements 11. What kind of settings should I use to capture the video with full information?
    Here is what I did:
    1) According the manual, I went to Capture settings panel (Edit > Project Settings > Capture) and selected HDV as capture format, because my video is at high definition.
    2) In addition, I checked "Capture to Timeline" and "Split Scenes by cotent".
    Are these settings enough?
    Thanks.

Sounds reasonable, using Add Media/HDV Camcorder, but....
Have you reviewed the Adobe write up on Premiere Elements 11 DV and HDV capture firewire into it.
    http://help.adobe.com/fr_FR/premiereelements/using/WS5CDA0F91-60F1-4b79-ABF6-E9E75F498DB2. html#WS2AF26FB5-4C63-4c46-9DB3-7249558F6528
The mention of Get Media instead of Add Media makes me wonder if the video's instructor was demo'ing from Premiere Elements 10, but...
Major factors have always included having Premiere Elements project preset set correctly to correspond to your camera settings...For HDV data capture firewire...
NTSC HDV HDV 1080p30 or PAL HDV HDV 1080p25 depending on if you are targeting a NTSC or PAL area where frame rates are typically a consideration.
I had not done any DV or HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements. But, Premiere Elements 11's take over of the project preset setting would encourage me to encourage you to verify your project settings before the capture.
There are probably many more, but the following is online discussion of one Canon HV20 issue
    http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/316970-video-capture-problems-HV20-camcorder-is-control led-but-no-video-capture
If you experience difficulty with the HDV capture fireware into Premiere Elements 11, you might consider what some others have done in this regard, that is, use HDVSplit for the capture firewire and then import the split (.m2t) clips "Add Media" into Premiere Elements 11 with the appropriate HDV HDV 1080p (1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9) project preset.
Please update us on your progress when you get a chance.
    Thanks.

  • Capturing from a Canon HV20 for CS5.5 on a Mac

    Hi everyone,
Never had this problem on any version of the CS system and now all of a sudden I can't capture from the Canon HV20 anymore.  It keeps telling me to check the settings but they all seem ok.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks
    Jo

Mark, by any chance in your interviews, did you use a combination of mikes on 2 different channels? For example, did you use a boom on one channel and a lav on the other? If so, and you are importing as stereo, you might be having phase problems between the two mikes, making it sound weak. Try turning off stereo pair under the modify pulldown and turn one of the tracks off.
    Does that improve thinga?
Of course you might just have had an idiot for an engineer...

  • 24p or 25p With Canon HV20?

A number of people on this forum have written about shooting 24p with the Canon HV20 and I have also read independent reviews about it.
So why does my HV20 only have 25p in the menus and manual ?
Is it because mine is PAL and the others are NTSC ?
    Will 25p be superior to 24p ?
Also how do you deal with it when using FCE/FCP ? Do you treat it exactly as you would 1080i50 HDV and use the same Easy Setups etc.?
Actually it is not called "25p" but "HDV(PF25)"

I think it's like most things, you can _Crash and Burn_ or _Crash and Learn._
    Jump in and try everything.
Thankfully we use PAL and _Not The Same Colour_ twice.
    What's (PF25) stand for? 25 Progressive Frames??
BTW: I doubt if your camera will or Mac will catch fire under normal test conditions.

  • Issues with Canon HV20?

I am on the verge of purchasing a canon HV20 and iMovie '08. My biggest goal is to watch game film of my kids sporting events in HD. I've heard that some have complained about 1080i using this camera. Can anyone comment?
    Thanks

I just did not think that I achieve as much of the look as I expected. I am not sure about the shutter speed. It is supposed to be 1/48 or something like that to achieve the maximum film-like appeareance. When you put this camera in "P" & modify to 24p with cinema mode you are not able to verify what the shutter speed is.
I am not sure if it is in the proper speed to achieve the maximum effect. Do not get me wrong, there is a slight difference with your standard HD mode, however, it was a little less than I expected.
Again, I am not sure if the shutter speed sets itself when you have it on "Cinema mode" @ 24p

  • IMovie not compatible with Canon HV20?

Can't get my iMac to recognize my HV20. Anybody else have one and able to explain if I'm missing something? Got a firewire cable, plugged it into the HDV/DV port on the camera, turned it to "play" and I'm getting nothing. On the camera, no matter if I set the output to DV or HDV/DV, the mac doesn't see it.
Canon's website says I shouldn't need anything for OS X support.
About to head upstairs to my windows box to see if it'll see it.
Any suggestions? I'd much rather use the mac for vid capture than my windows computer.

... it certainly makes me wonder about your compute setup. Do you have any other Firewire devices connected to your computer when you are trying to make the video transfer? I know some earlier Canon DV camcorders wanted to be the only Firewire device on the bus during transfer.

  • Can't capture HDV with Canon Legria hv40

    Hi,
I'm having this very irritating problem - when I try to capture HDV(25) footage with Premiere Pro CS6 the program:
    recognizes the camera
    has control over camera navigation
doesn't show preview in the capture window
says it's capturing, but only captures audio from the camera (in mp3)
I'm using FireWire and all the Premiere/camera settings are set to HDV.
I can't figure out what the problem might be here.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

I originally had this problem with a  #trial version of CS5.5 and it did exactly what you describe, (incidentally Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 @ $75 USD, captures perfectly) ,but, on going to full version and upgrade to CS5.5.2 it has been working perfectly for the last 18 months. (It won't help you but, HDV Canon Capture in Premiere Pro 1.5.1. and that is 5+years old was/is very efficient)
And later as well, just double check New Sequence > Presets > HDV 1080i 25 (50) or other .
Click on Preset Descriptions it will show what it is doing.
    Good luck
#Ps. This occurred in a downloaded trial version (Adobe may not have included the HDV/mpeg-2 codec or it may have been corrupted), but, there is no problem here on 2 x i7 64 bit computers running the program from disc.
    >    http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/features-presets-missing-premiere-pro.htmlhttp:// This will probably open in Google ?
This really is no help ?

  • New to apple, not a techie. importing problems with canon hv20 - new imac

    hi team
i'm just starting out, and have honestly tried to look through the boards, but its just to much stuff to read.
i'm trying to import minidv tapes from canon, newer tape recorded on the canon imports ok on manual.
older tape recorded on an older canon around 2004-6, which plays in my new canon ok, apart from its not wide screen in the lcd, wont import.
what's the difference between my new wide screen tape, and my older recorded tape?
my imac is great, but the tutorials to get started with are smooth and basic, and assume you have no porblems.
    thanks in advance

thank you for your time team.
why isn't imovie clever enough to receive my older tape which i guess isn't digital? its hardly ancient technology or tape. if my hv20 plays it, why doesn't imovie just receive it?
to me its all just movie footage, i'm confused as to why it doesn't give me options or ask me question's about what i'm uploading...
does imovie only work with digital footage?
    cheers

  • Capture problems with Canon HDV footage

Despite double checking all presets my FCP (5.1.4) capture window is not recognising HDV 1080i footage shot on the Canon XH A1. I'm only getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device" message. Firewire I'm using is working fine for DV footage. Any help VERY much appreciated !

Did you also check the settings on the camera?  Make sure it's set for proper output for the format you're trying to capture.

  • IDVD not working with Canon HV20

I am trying to do a one step DVD with iDVD and my HV20 camera. When I click on the one step DVD it gives me the message to connect my camera an put it in VCR mode and insert a DVD and press OK. No I have the HV20 in Play mode and after I click on the OK put it goes back to the iDVD startup screen. I launch iMovie and it sees my HV20 no problem. Any ideas?

I sure hope so. But don't hold your breath. (Apple seems to be on the fast lane toward streaming video as opposed to burning it to Dvd-R or to a blu-ray disc).
Btw, You might have better luck with Roxio Toast 10 Pro. I don't think the folks over at Roxio have ever heard of a bag of hurt. Their software simply works.

  • Live capture with FCE 4 and Canon HV20 - End of Tape when capture in HD

I have a Canon HV20 HiDef video camera that was given to me to record an event. I want to try and avoid using the tapes if possible and capture the video directly into my MacBook Pro using FCE 4.
If I try and capture video when the camera is set to HD output, the capture screen comes up, I can see the image from the camera on the FCE4 screen for a split second, then I get a message indicating the end of tape has been encountered. (The tape isn't even being used and is no where near the end anyway).
If I change the camera to DV output, I can change the FCE4 Easy Setup to simple DV control and it works fine to capture live, except that it is no longer in HD. I get no error message about the tape end being hit.
I am unable to find any Easy Setup configuration that will allow me to record live. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Play your tape forward to a position where there is continuous Timecode and try again.
As Ian suggests the correct _AIC Easy Setup_ is the only way to get HDV in to your Mac via FCE.
Note: Your camera must be set to output HDV assuming it recorded HDV.

  • TS3850 Cannot capture directly into FCX with my Canon HV20

I am trying to connect my Canon HV20  to capture into Final Cut directly instead of using tape.  It shows up but it doesn't control the camera and doesn't capture.  Any suggestions?

See if iMovie, will allow you to import, your video footage.
If not, it might be your firewire cable. They do go bad.
Also, does your mac allow firewire 400 and or 800?
Newer ones no longer use firewire, but thunderboldt, which you can get adapert,
for your firewire cable. You can check out Apples web site for those cables, or electronics
    store, near were you live.
    I have had both firewire 400 & 800 cables go bad on me. I've used the HV30 & HV40.
I've never had or heard of the fw connector on the camera going bad. If it did, you would have to send it back to Canon for repair.

  • Premiere Pro 1.5.1 HDV VIDEO CAPTURE - Canon HV20

    Hi,
For the life of me I cannot get my camera to capture in HDV. I can switch over to DV and it will capture everything just fine. The settings I recorded in are HDV standard, Widescreen 29fps. Not the 24. But it just tells me the device is ofline no matter what I try. I grabbed a stand alone CineForm HDLink and that doesn't detect it either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The Client wants HD, not DV.
Premiere Pro 1.5.1 HDV VIDEO CAPTURE - Canon HV20 firewire
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, I spoke to soon. I kept searching and searching.  Finally found this..
    http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=12131
My camera was locked in DV mode. So I had to switch it to HDV/DV
"b) As many have said you need to be sure that the camera is set ot output in HDV, and not DV locked. Because I am a bit of a dunce I found it difficult to locate that, even with the manual so here are some foolproof instructions on how to get there:
    in "Play" Mode > FUNC > MENU > PLAY/OUT SETUP2 > DV OUTPUT [set this to HDV/DV]"
    That did it.

  • Import HD video with my Canon HV20

Hi, I have a Canon HV20 which is a High Def camera. I bought a firecable at the Apple Store, but now I'm trying to import it into Final Cut. I used the Log and Capture, then went and imported it as HV NTSC 48 Khz. When I burn it with DVD Studio Pro it doesn't look like it is HD. So what is a correct preset that Final Cut will recognize it because when I select like one of the DVDPRO options he won't recognize it. Thank you and much obliged for any help.

Thanks for your reply. I still can't find it in the list, attached is a screen shot. Thank you for your help!

  • Canon HV20 24P HDV workflow, Some things with FCP and Quicktime are ODD.

Canon HV20, 24P, HDV, CMOS sensor...
First, I do hope and pray that the FCP dudes are making this work native at HDV 24p -- great!
But until then, there's a workflow (see below) and a real oddity I can't figure out, and if anyone has any thoughts about it that would be great.
Sometimes, the image captured/shown/exported is a lighter picture, and other capture/playing/export methods are darker picture. Example: the captured 60i from Final Cut Pro has a light gamma picture when viewed in Quicktime Player.
But playback in Final Cut Pro appears darker, and rich. But then exporting it out turns it light again, but export out to a MPEG-2 DVD is darker again? ODD.
Can anyone explain the FCP capture size of 1888 x 1062?
Anyhow, here is some workflow success that I had.
Capturing in Final Cut Pro using the HDV 1080/60i setting with HDV firewire basic NDF. But 60i is evil. So that's not enough. Got to get it to 24P,since that allows 20% more bandwidth, space, faster renders, and DVD players can play it.
Transcoding to a regular editing codec before converting to 24P is required. I found that MPEG Streamclip would create a wierd, jagged edges on small moving figures with high contrast, no matter what the settings, so I refuse to use it to export the footage.
So instead, FCP has an additional capture option of "Apple Intermediate Codec" or something like that, which transcribes it on the fly to AIC. I always stayed away from AIC like the plague, but they must have spent some time with it because it's nearly identical to the HDV original.
Next, open up in Quicktime Player, and start the clip on that second P frame. Sounds odd, I know. Goto the first interlaced frame, and back up two frames. Mark the "I", and then move that Out marker to the end, and then Trim the clip to the selection. Do that with all the clips, and then you can batch 24P them all.
If you don't want to find that one frame each time, here are the other settings:
First, open up the clip inside cinema tools, and then select Rev. Telecine button.
Find out which of these your clip is doing at the very beginning:
    p-p-i-i-p - aa
    p-i-i-p-p - bb
    i-p-p-p-i - bc
    p-p-p-i-i - cd
i-i-p-p-p - this is no good. must remove at least one frame from the beginning of source file
    i = interlaced frame
    p = progressive frame
all settings use the F1-F2, style one, standard upper/lower

Sometimes, the image captured/shown/exported is a lighter picture, and other capture/playing/export methods are darker picture. Example: the captured 60i from Final Cut Pro has a light gamma picture when viewed in Quicktime Player.
But playback in Final Cut Pro appears darker, and rich. But then exporting it out turns it light again, but export out to a MPEG-2 DVD is darker again? ODD.
This is known. This happens with ANY footage you look at in FCP and QT player. QT lightens the gamma of the footage. Why? Something to do with adjusting the image for computer monitors.
