Capturing HDV without Timecode

I am using a JVC HD110 U capturing in HDV at 720p 24. For some reason, even though the timecodes are consecutive, Final Cut Studio is registering timecode breaks. Some of these are on cuts, but others are in the middle of takes.
I know that if it were DV I could set the device to non-controllable and capture without timecode, but in HDV it won't let me set the device control to non-controllable.
Is there anyway that I can capture HDV and ignore the time code on the tape?
Thanks much,
J. Cameron Brueckner

Depending on that setting I either get the capture to stop in the middle or it continues and create a new clip. If I let it run, I loose a few seconds in the middle of the take. If I set the preroll to 1 sec, I can get the lost time down to 3 sec, but since it happens in the middle of takes not just at cuts, it is still a problem that I am loosing 3 seconds (2 while it searches for media and 1 for preroll).
Any thoughts?
Thanks much.

  • Capture HDV without Final Cut?

I am on a shoot in a country that is known for confiscating tapes. Therefore, I need to have a backup of everything I shoot. Unfortunately, my plan of using a Firestore FS-4 failed when it broke 4 days into my shoot. My Mac does not have Final Cut on it and I can't find a way to download it. Is there any way to capture HDV with a program other than Final Cut?

    Sorry no.
I am surprised when you say iMovie captures at 1/8 speed.
I haven't tried it with AIC but I have tested FCE and my iMac was able to capture in realtime.
I can't see why iMovie should be so slow. Even if you have a very old, slow computer it shouldn't take more than 30% longer than realtime.
Have you been using iMovie 08? The much more "professional" iMovie 06 can be downloaded free here:-

  • Capturing footage without timecodes

I love editing with Final Cut Express, but capturing footage is a nightmare. The program keeps trying to locate timecode breaks on my Hi8 tape during capture, which results in me losing three to four seconds of footage from the beginning of each scene.
Is there a way to tell FCE to disregard timecodes? When I capture family movies, I'd like the importing to be as seamless as possible -- much like when capturing in iMovie. (I do know that I can capture in iMovie and edit in FCE, but if it's possible, I'd like to do all my work in FCE without relying on iMovie.)
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Thank you both very much for your quick replies! I tried switching my Easy Setup as suggested, and now my capturing seems to be working smoothly. Awesome!
Thanks so much again -- I really appreciate it!

  • Capture HDV-AIC- no timecode?

    Hi,
I usually capture HDV natively with easy setup HDV 1080i50 (PAL), even capture now I can get time codes.
But when I use HDV apple intermmediate codec to capture HDV, I dont get time code. Is that normal???
    thanks
    pH

Yes there is...you will be slightly compressing the footage when you capture at DVCPRO HD. But it is MUCH easier to work with.
In fact, one person who used this workflow noted that the DVCPRO HD codec smoothed out the artifacting the HDV causes with fast motion.

  • Capturing footage HDV without sound!?

    Hello!
I want to capture HDV footage with a Sony MAZ in FCP, but it is not posible to hear sound when I capture! Also I have no possibility to chance all settings in the capture window!
Is this a bug at capturing HDV?

no, this is not a bug, this is how it works
HDV does not allow play through audio at capture ... you can monitor audio from the deck directly during capture if needed
change settings? which setting did you want to change?
HDV capture via firewire, just like DV, is a data transfer operation, so you cannot change settings such as gain, saturation, setup etc during capture

  • Batch capture HDV error

I have FCP 5.14 and have just logged a bunch of HDV footage offline. I did this the normal way I would when capturing DV footage, marking the in and out point and then log the clip, standard stuff?
When I try to Batch capture the offline clips it captures only 1 frame from each clip, then the clip details are also effected, ie the Media start and media end of my clips changes from what they where into two new time codes 1 frame either side of the newly captured clip.
Is this a program error or am I just completely useless??? Can somebody help me please

Not sure if this is your exact problem, but I've had issues with Batch Capturing HDV in FCP 5.1.4 using both a Sony M15U and M25U.
The deck would seek to the appropriate place on the tape and then just jog back and forth looking for the right start point. It would do this about 3 times and then give up.
The solution for this was a DROP FRAME / NON-DROP FRAME setting in FCP. If you go to your A/V Settings and then to the Device Control Presets tab and edit your preset (If it's locked you can just make a copy of it and edit the copy - I am using the Sony HDV firewire preset). If you know what your footage was shot in (drop or non) make this setting adjustment. If you don't know, try both.
As soon as this not so little detail was checked everything batch captured without fail. Just make sure there aren't any timecode breaks on your tape.
    Hope this helps.

  • Captured HDV suddenly indication TC breaks

    Hello,
This question may pertain to my camera as much as to FC but thought I'd give it a try anyway.
I've been capturing HDV from a Canon XHA1 camera for some time with no trouble. Today a tape captured as 35 separate clips, each clip marking a point where the camera was turned off and on. When I look at these clips there is always one frame difference between the end of one clip and the start of the next. Yet the time codes of the 35 clips are continuous. I tried capturing this same footage on another computer with the same results. Then, to experiment, I shot some footage in SD with lots of stops and starts in filming, and no problems capturing. I then shot some HDV with lots of individual shots, but back to the problem of the creation of multiple clips - each starting when the camera was restarted.
I'm confused. From my experimenting it seems most likely that the problem is in the camera's HDV computer component, but that's a guess.
Is there any way this is a glitch that FC can deal with? Can one instruct it to ignore what it takes as "timecode breaks" and let it capture the whole tape? Seems to me older versions of FC could do that. I'd just like to capture the whole tape to see if those individual frames register as missing there as well.
    Thanks
    John

    I'm becoming even more confused.
As an experiment I wanted to capture a section of the tape that seems to be showing a time code break so that I could examine it's time code more carefully. The plan was to go to User Preferences and uncheck the box that says "Abort capture on dropped frames". This way I should be able to go back and capture a section of tape right through what seems to be a time code break. I did that. I unchecked the box (and eventually the one above it that says "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames" though I've never been able to figure out what that means.). When I captured I still got a new clip at precidely the same point.
So, in summary, with or without "Abort capture" checked, in HDV mode (but not SD) I'm getting a new clip at each point where the camera stops then starts.
    John
p.s. I was checking the camera's manual last night in hopes that somewhere in it there were instructions on how one could "reset it computer", trash preferences and all that - as that simple procedure so often seems to solve everything - but no luck.)

  • Recapture HDV without pre-roll on every clip

I am trying to recapture HDV using Batch Capture.  My problem is that on every clip on the tape, FCP does a 5 second pre-roll.  So it captures a clip, then backs up 5 seonds and captures the next clip -- an on and on.  It does actually capture the clips correctly, but it takes forever and puts a lot of extra ware on the camera.
I have been able to re-capture in the past without the pre-roll between each clip, but it has been a long time and I don't remember how I did it.  Any suggestions?
I am using FCP 7.0.3 running on OS 10.7.4.  My "deck" is a Canon HV30 HDV camera, capturing over firewire.
    Thanks
    Rick

First, if the OP uses capture now, he'll have to reedit all the clips into his sequence.  Shouldn't be a big deal matching the timecode, BUT timecode will not match if there's a timecode break and he uses capture now without "create new clip on timecode break" enabled.  There can also be problems using capture now.  For frame accuracy and audio synch, you must have "create new clip on timecode break" and "abort capture on dropped frames" enabled.  If there's a timecode jump, fcp will use preroll and create a new clip.   If there's a break in control track (a space where there's no signal on the tape), without abort capture on dropped frames, audio synch issues will result.
And I'm not sure fcp can capture HDV material over timecode breaks cause of the nature of mpeg compression.  Not sure, cause I don't work a great deal with HDV material.
I think the OP is overly worried about camera wear but in most cases you can reduce the preroll amount to 3 seconds without much problem which will save you some wear on the camera.

  • Unable to capture HDV in FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVR-Z1P

Hi I'm attempting to capture HDV footage from a Sony Z1.
I am trying to capture some HDV footage I shot with the Z1, but FCP simply refuses to recognize the Z1
I'm certain I've got all the settings correct:
    - Camera is set to HDV firewire out
    - capture presets is set to HDV
    - device control preset is set to Sony HDV FireWire
    - sequence preset is set to HDV 1080i50 (I'm in Australia)
    - footage IS HDV 1080i50
But I keep getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device and Device Control" popup. I've tried everything
    - rebooted the camera
    - restarted FCP
    - rebooted the system
    - changed the capture/device control settings in FCP and tried out a regular DV deck to make sure it wasn't the cable
    Nothing has worked.
I'm on a MBPro I7. No Kona card or anything like that, just trying to capture through firewire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Matt
At present it will capture HDV in IMovie but not FCP 6.0.1

Thanks Adrian, since posting the thread I've thought of that too but unfortunately to no avail. From other forums I've read this seems to be a central theme to the solution to my capture woes. I since have sorted the problem it was in Audio/Video Settings.
In the end I set my Audio/Video Settings to:
Sequence Preset to: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Capture Pre-HDV- Apple intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
And hey presto my I'm capturing HD without any problems. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Can't capture HDV from Sony z1 on FCP 7

    Hi,
I have set 'easy setup' to HDV (I have also tried HDV Fire wire basic) I've followed tutorial on all the set ups to capture.  But when I go to capture, FCP can control the play buttons and I can see the time code on screen but there is no picture or sound coming through to capture and is says 'Capture was aborted due to no incoming data from device'.
    I have checked everything.
I followed all the suggestions in an older discussion in this forum -
Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1
This was the last post in that discussion:
"Re: Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1
May 23, 2010 4:37 PM (in response to MrMajesticMole)
I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now."
I followed all these tips and nothing has changed.  This is the first time I am using HDV in FCP.  I have used the same Sony z1 camera to shoot and capture DV footage in my current FCP set up and I've had no problems.
The only wierd thing is that under easy set up I selected HDV first with 'all rates' under frame rate.  When that didn't work I tried "HDV fire wire basic".  Then I tried to put the frame rate in a 50fps.  When nothing made any difference I put the frame rate back to all frame rates and while still on Format: HDV selected HDV 1080i50  and also have tried HDV 1080i50 with 'all frame rates' and everythime I go back, it's defaulted to  'HDV 720p50' in the 'use box and frame rate  50fps.
I would really appreciate help with this.

    Hi Russ,
Thanks for getting back so quickly.
I was feeling hopeful because I realised I had the fps rate set to 50 and when you said 25fps I thought that must be it.  Unfortunatly it hasn't worked at all.  It keeps saying there's no data incoming data from device, yet it acknowledges the timecode and I can control the camera from FCP.
I double checked my settings and made sure the camera was on before launching FCP.  I am going to study the document you included to see if there is anything else I am doing that isn't working.  I am wondering if there are some audio settings mucking it up.
If you have any other thoughts let me know.  I will let you know if I figure it out.
    Cheers,
    Carolyn

  • Error message: "Attempt to capture video without a video device selected."

When trying to log and capture, I'm receiving the following error message: "Attempt to capture video without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your capture presents and try again."
In Capture Presents under DV NTSC 48 kHz it says "WARNING: Video Device DV Video is missing."
An attempt to edit the Capture Preset gives me QuickTime Video Setting Digitzer options of only "[missing] DV Video."
This happened only after I upgraded to Tiger. I know Log and Capture is recognizing the camera because it's showing the timecodes, but not the image. Any help would be most appreciated.

This reminds me of a problem with the QuickTime install. Try this - remove all the QuickTime associated .pkg files from /Library/Receipts, then go to http://www.quicktime.com and download the full installer and do a complete install.
    Post back,

  • "no data from device" when trying to capture HDV

I need to capture additional footage for an HDV project I am already editing. Capturing the initial footage (about a month ago) went smoothly. Now however, when trying to capture footage from a new tape shot just last week, I simply cannot. If I try to Capture Now, I get a "No Data from Device" message and the capture attempt aborts. If I log some clips and Batch Capture, the material cues and begins to play but the capture window just continues to say CUEING SOURCE MATERIAL and captures nothing. I am using the Sony HVR-M10U deck as a capture device.
The only thing that has changed between the original capture and this latest attempt is that I have also been working on a DV project at the same time, and I used the M10U to capture some DV footage for that project. In order to succesfully capture DV footage I had to force the deck to play only DV (by changing the VCR settings in the menu).
To try and capture this latest HDV footage, I went back into the menu and forced the deck to play HDV only. In searching for answers I came across this Apple article (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407) and followed those exact steps.
However, nothing seems to work. I do have device control and the timecode is being read off the deck in Log & Capture (so the firewire connection is fine), but there's no video in the preview window and no capturing is possible. I am able to open my DV project, reset the menu on the deck, and capture DV footage - but I can't for the life of me switch to capturing HDV footage.
Any bright ideas would be much appreciated - I'm really at wits end.
    thanks,
    Tom

I am having a similar problem with my sony HVRZ1U, I can capture dv through firewire no problem but when I choose easy setup for HDV it does not recognize the device.
Funny thing is I tried to download clips on a pc in Premiere with all the similar settings on my camera and it works fine, I have deck control and can capture HDV footage, so that rules out a problem with the camera. Back to FCP5 with the same settings and nothing.
Went through uninstalling quicktime 7.03 back to 7.01 - nothing
Deleted the preferences in FCP5 - nothing
Checked the firewire connections and cables - they work fine
Using all the right settings on the camera and in FCP5
The tape format was shot correctly
Any light on what could be going wrong would be very very much appreciated

  • Capturing HDV-ProRes

    Hello,
I I have been for some time been able to capture HDV from a XHA1 to ProRes without any problems. Recently I captured with the same camera HDV to DVPal and since then I can't capture HDV-ProRes anymore. I says "Can't initialize..."
I have trashed the preferences... but that didn't help.
I you have any helpful ideas - I would be more than happy to hear them!
    Best regards,

  • Cannot capture HDV through my SONY Z1P camera

    Hi all,
My system profiler can find my camera connected via firewire. Cannot see in my setting 1080i50i, only 1080i60i as a capture setting. I can get the camera to connect and read timecode but no vision until i downgrade in camera to convert output to DV. How do i go about capturing HDV on this model camera, many thanks.

i'm guessing you're just missing the setup, not the codec
open the Final Cut Pro menu > Audio/Video Settings... window
from the Sequnece Preset popup choose: HDV - 1080i50
from the Capture Preset popup choose: HDV
from the Device Control Preset choose: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
from the Video Playback popup menu choose: None
from the Audio Playback popup menu choose: Default
then press the Create Easy Setup... button
give your setup a Name (HDV - 1080i50) and Description (blah blah blah)
press Create... lastly, choose a filename for the preset, and save it to the default location

  • Unable to capture HDV with Sony HDR-FX1 in FCE 4

    Hello all,
Been using an HDR-FX1 for a while, shooting mostly DV, and today I began experimenting with HDV. I shot 8 minutes of footage with the camera in HDV mode.
When I setup FCE 4 for Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, the capture window doesn't recognize the camera. However, if I set the FX1 to down convert to DV via firewire, FCE recognizes the camera and I'm able to capture.
How do I (or can I) capture HDV into FCE 4 with the FX1? Is there something (a setting perhaps) that I'm missing? Do I need to jump to FC Pro for this?
My system: 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 (tower), 2 GB RAM, Sony FX1, FCE 4.0, QT 7.3.1
    Thanks in advance,
    tg

I had a similar issue with iMovie08 import using HDR-HC1... You may want to try this to see if it helps:
1> Close the import app (FCE, in your case)
2> Unplug the FW cable from the camcorder (Most important step)
3> Go into the Sony menu and re-select the HDV settings (explicit HDV, not Auto + Conv off) in the camcorder
4> Re-connect the FW cable, and restart FCE
I use these steps successfully while switching between HDV and DV imports from my camcorder using iMovie 08. Hopefully, this resolves your problem with FCE. Later this weekend, I plan to experiment (for the first time) with FCE HDV import to try and see the export quality difference between FCE and iM08 (which apparently downconverts everything to 540 lines!).
