Capturing Hi8 analog thru aja using DV setting keeps dropping frames

I am capturing from a RCA hi 8 camera using Capture preset DV NTSC 48 khz but I am dropping frames any ideas

In an attempt to troubleshoot the component that is causing the problem, try capturing with all the same settings as you have now, but set the capture scratch to the system drive. This is not the best option to do as normal practice, but if it works on the system drive, then it's not FCP, but either the drive, or the port that is faulty. If it captures successfully to the system drive, next step is to go out and get another hard drive and connect it. If it fails, most likely you have a bad Firewire card. If it works, it most likely is the RAID, and you can troubleshoot that with other means.

started to be unable to digitize footage.
It says there are dropped frame or problems with the source tape. The same tape, using the same deck, same firewire (400-800port) work FINE on my husbands G5
So I think it has to be my computer. I was working on FCP 4, and thought maybe when I installed FCP 6 it would magically get better.
So I got fcp 6 and I still have the same problem....
any help would be much appreciated.

99 times out of 100 it's that your scratch disk can't keep up with the captures... what are you capturing to? Should be a disk other than your internal startup disk. Is this DV material?

Using cs3. Clips dropping frames. When I import m2t video from my focus inhancements fs-4hd

The 2 gb. limit creates several clips and the clips don't join together correctly. the end of each clip is missing 4 frames of audio and 1 frame of video. This makes it impossible to sync to video tracks together. Am I alone with this problem? Would Cs5 correct it?

Yes exactly. Using the original files to edit with can make your editing process verrryy slow especially on a laptop.
Forget about H.264 for editing- a good codec for other purposes but not for editing in Final Cut.
Don't worry about losing image quality when you import and transcode into ProRes - you aren't 'sacrificing' image quality, you're only converting (transcoding) into this codec to edit with-- to make editing faster and more efficient on your CPU... This is what he means by that. The original files will still be there - don't worry they won't be slaughtered
ProRes is the most FCP friendly codec for editing - it's an Apple codec that gives you high playback quality without using a ton of CPU, and was pretty much designed for FCP. You should find that transcoding your material into this codec will eliminate the sluggishness you've described.
FCPX gives you the option for ProRes optimized or ProRes proxy when you import your media - both are good for your purposes, but proxy is probably the best for you since you are on a laptop . Fastest to edit with, with slightly less image quality (again - only while editing!)
Then, whenever you're done editing and are ready to export back into high quality - just go into your preferences menu and click Original/optimized media and it will switch over for you. You can then export in high quality.
FCPX as much as I hate it - makes the transcoding procress very easy.

Testing Server/DB setting keep dropping out!

I've been working with studio MX for a while with CF
administrator.
Over the past six months, every once in a while, the I get a
failure of the testing server settings and need to go reset them.
This time, however, I cannot set them. Instead, I get the following
error:
The server name or addresss could not be resolved.
Possible Reasons:
1. The URL specified for this site's testing server may not
be correct
2. The testing server may be incorrectly configured (for
example, ColdFusion may not be running).
Both 1 & 2 are false; both setting have been working fine
for years. ColdFusion server is running, and I have
stopped/restarted it and IIS with no relief.
I have been working locally (prior to uploading completed
files) with server setting of:
http://localhost:8500/myfolder/
for quite some time and up to now (and the few instances mentioned)
things were always fine. However, now I can't even reset the
settings, even if they actually needed to be.
I need help with this and, more important, I'd really like to
understand why this is happening. Do I need to go as far as
re-installing the software? BTW, CF Administrator works fine.

Check to see if the firewall is turned on.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall
If the firewall was turned off, try this DNS server.
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
Click + and type:
208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
208.67.220.220
Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Dropped Frames -- Releted to Capture?

I was quickly working on a project for old friends, which I have now easily been able to finish to satisfaction, but got some dropped frames warnings during the process, which it did not hurt to ignore. Now I want to analyze why this happened?
I had some previously footage on DV tape that had been copied from VHS, via VCR to camcorder in VTR mode -- no problem with these in FCP, utilizing In/Out timecodes. However I had to quickly review a lot more old VHS tapes, and chose to use my Canopus ADCV 110 to allow for rapid review and selective capture. Furthermore, it seemed much easier to do this in iMovie HD, capture selectively, and then export as QT dv, and import into FCP. All this seemed to work, and I could edit. But exclusive to those clips captured in iMovie and exported, I started to get this warning about dropped frames.
Was this caused by the path of capture/export directly, or did the fact that I exported to the same scratch disk drive as those clips captured directly in FCP matter? Although using my new Mac Pro, I was still using my LaCie FW 800 disk as capture scratch. Is it the lack of timecodes on those assets captured via the Canopus, and should I expect the same issues if I capture via the Canopus, but in FCP? Part of the reason I used iMovie to capture, was I couldn't figure out how to monitor the sound from the VCR, which had no headphone jack, if reviewing via the Canopus and FCP.
I love the Canopus, but have not made extensive use of it in this situation. However, I believe it actually gave better quality than "remastering" to DV tape, first, btw.

I have also come to the same conclusion. I've been capturing video just fine and now I get this "dropped frames during capture" error message.
SAME computer
SAME external 7200 rpm drive for capture
SAME fire-wire cable
SAME camcorder
SAME mini-dv tape
I upgraded to OS 10.4.9 and iTunes 7.1.1 a few days ago and only now am I receiving this error message. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Drop frame on capturing

I was capturing fine from my Sony mini-deck into my Dual G4 Mac (OS10.4.10) into Final Cut Pro 5.0.4. At certain point I interrupted and next day when I came back to work, picking up from where I was, the program now tells me that it has found drop frames and stops the capturing automatically.
I went back to a part of the tape which had been captured w/ no problem the day before and tried to capture again - it said now that it was finding drop frames - it keeps saying that every couple of seconds and the capture doesn't happen...
I cleaned head of deck, tryied the camera as a deck and the same message came up...I also tried a different tape and the same problem happened!
I guess this means that the problem with my FCP settings...
I don't know what to do, what to try now...

Just update to Quicktime 7.3?

Dropping frame during capture

I keep dropping frames during capture. A message say "switch off unlimited RT" How do I do that and are there any other options. It had a new hard drive with bulk space still remaining

No, "Safe RT" plays everything at the highest quality therefore if your computer is not fast enough you drop frames.
Unlimited and Dynamic will reduce the quality of the played back video so that the computer can usually cope. (Note that when you output your finished project it will be at maximum quality).

Dropped frames during Analog to Digital capture

I've been slowly working on a project capturing analog 8mm video tapes to my computer with no problems so far but am getting a lot of dropped frames on one particular tape. I've been using Scenalyzer for the capture and on this particular tape, am getting approx. 30 dropped frames every 10 to 15 seconds.
I've cleaned the heads of the camcorder and shut down background processes on my computer with no improvement.
As a test though, I captured the same clip using WinDV and had significantly fewer dropped frames, but WinDV doesn't do optical scene detection which is why I'd prefer continuing to use Scenalyzer.
It it the software or my computer causing the dropped frames or is it the age/condition of the 8mm tape? Any advice appreciated.

It looks like the dropped frame issue has been fixed. The glitches occurred during playback from the files on the hard drive so they looked to be real but I did two things. First, I Played/FF the tape for the first 15 minutes of the tape and then Played/Rewinded it as Bill suggested.
Secondly, I noticed that my S-Video cable from the Hi8 camcorder didn't connect very well to the front of the ADS Pyro unit so I trimmed back the surrounding plastic on the S-Video cable to get a more solid connection to the ADS unit. Between those those two things, I'm getting a nice capture now.
Thanks again for the help. Now onto transferring and editing the shoebox of tapes.

I installed all the latest drivers both from nvidia and msi, the the card (gf4-ti4200vdtX8) works with no problems, but I dont have any input device in the IniputSources folder in the WinProducer program.... (i am connecting an anlog camcorder) why??

Cant capture hi8

Hi i dont any capture card but i have a digital8 cam connected by firewire to the comp. i can capture Digital 8 footage but when i try to capture hi8 playing from the cam my log and capture says it cant read timecode. I have set the capture limit to 30 min thinking it would solve the problem but it did not.

Capturing via analog, getting snow/artifacting

I'm using a Kona LHe to capture a 720p component signal and I get "artifacting" or snow, but only when I capture for more than a couple minutes at a time. It's minor but noticable. Any thoughts on what could be wrong?
Capture settings are Kona AJA DVCHDPro 59.96 fps, matched up with the signal that's coming in.

Definitely can't be a tape issue, as I am capturing from a video game console.
I read somewhere that it could be a memory/RAM issue, as I am getting what looks like "exploding" pixels. I have 2GB of RAM on 2 1GB sticks, and then 2 256 MB sticks that were originally in there. I'm going to go in and re-set all of the cards and remove that RAM and hopefully that will help. Otherwise I will call Kona or check out that site as the poster above listed.

At the first DAQmxReadBinary call attempt, the system shows an error (see attached document)
What we understand about that error : it is impossible to run the two set of tasks (ai and ao) using ressources from both Dev1 and Dev2 in the set of tasks because it is not allowed to use the same Reference Clock for that.
The question is : is there a way to to that without having that kind of message?
We tried different combinations :
- Using only one ao task (on Dev1/Dac0) : same error
- Not using any ao task (only the ai task) : no error
- configuring the ai task with only channel from Dev1 : no error
- Using "/Dev1/ai/SampleClock" as internal clock for the ai task and "/Devk/ao/SampleClock" for each ao task (k standing for "1" or "2" depending of the ao task we consider) : error

Can I capture audio at 24 bit using MOTU HDX-SDI?

I am trying to capture 8 bit uncompressed AVI files with 24 bit audio using Adobe Premiere CS6 and a MOTU HDX-SDI. I have set the MOTU audio settings to 24 bit via Premiere before the capture.
The resulting capture file using Adobe Premiere contains 32 bit audio not 24. The 16 bit setting captures correctly to 16 bit. Can the audio be captured at 24 bit using this interface with Adobe Premiere?
I have contacted MOTU and they claim that the audio is captured at 24 bit regardless. Is Premiere upconverting the bit depth?
I am using ffprobe, mediainfo, AVI-Metaedit, and Premiere to examine the metadata in the captured file.
I'm using Adobe Premiere CS6 6.0.5

Premiere is not upconverting the bit depth on those files upon import.
It doesn't change the original file, it creates new files, called Conformed Audio and using the .cfa extension, at 32 bit floating-point bit depth. PP uses those CFA files for the actual audio work inside the program and when exporting. The only thing it really does with the original audio files is read them for the conforming process.
