Capturing/Importing Video
I am new to a Mac so please bear with me. I have not been successful in capturing/importing video (from my camera) using iMovie. The camera is a Sony DCR-IP5 using MicroMV tape. It is connected with a firewire to the Mac, yet is not recognized.
Is this a software issue and if so, what is recommended.
Thanks,
Ron
Instead of typing it all out again-go to Dan Slagle's site and read I have a Sony DCR-IP camera and it does not work

Poor/B&W Video During Capture/Import
I am trying to convert those old VHS tapes into digital video for editing, burning, etc. I am capturing through a Canopus ADVC-55 and iMovie HD 6. The problem is that the imported video is in black and white whereas on tape it is clearly in color. I have used more than one tape in case the first one was somehow faulty. I have been searching through the Apple site and elsewhere on the net for what might be the cause but I have come up empty handed. Is there a setting (hardware or software) that I have somehow overlooked? Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.
MarioYou certainly could do the analog outs from the deck to the kbox... if so, capture it as DVCPROHD... It's actually my preferred workflow with HDV sources. Not going to deliver HDV anyway, right? If you need an HDV master in the end, just reencode the DVCPROHD to HDV and record that clip back to HDV...
Technically, there will be a touch of loss, but my old eyes don't see it, and titles and graphics would be better in DVPCROHD in any event. Let alone the render times... 8 times faster renders in DVCRPROHD than in HDV... I've written an article about this very thing in the current issue of the Creative COW magazine, free download here after registering: http://magazine.creativecow.net/index.html

Hi, i have a canon 60d and i have been importing videos from it onto my mac for months but suddenly when i go on image capture or iphoto it no longer allows me to import them help!!!
Have you launched and tired Image Capture? When it's launched with the iPad connected the photos will display in the window. Select those you want to upload and use the Import to: menu and select Other. Navigate to the Desktop and select the folder you created to hold those photos.

Unable to properly capture HD video from miniDV tape in FCE
unable to capture HD video from miniDV tape
When I connect my Sony HDR-HC3 miniDV HDV camcorder to my iMac via firewire cable and use Final Cut Express to capture the video from the tape, I do not get a Capture window that allows me to specify in and out points, I just get a playback window that immediately starts capturing and the only option I have in this window is hit ESC to stop capturing. If I let this capture window continue to capture the video from the camera with miniDV HD tape, then the entire tape would be captured as one massive single video clip.
QUESTION: Is there something I change or do to make the proper capture window appear where I can specify in and out points to capture from tape for each clip?
NOTE: using same camera and tape with iMovie with automatic capture enabled, all the clips get captured properly. I also tried to use the manual setting in iMovie and it worked too.
More details(read only if you want more information)
I have a several miniDV tapes containing HD video created on a Sony Sony HDR-HC5 and Sony HDR-HC7. Unfortunately, both these camera were stolen, and I have since moved to a camera that uses flash memory, not tape. However, I need to get the video footage off these tapes, so I bought a used Sony HDR-HC3, it plays the HD miniDV tapes just fine and iMovie reads the video from this camera just fine, but Final Cut Express does not.
When I setup Final Cut Express, I used the Easy Setup and specified:
Format: HD
Rate: 29.97 fps
Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
These setting match those of the camera and recorded tape. If I use any other settings but these, then Final Cut Express never sees the camera and never opens any capture window at all. Using Quicktime 10 movie inspector on the clips captured by iMovie from same camera, all the clips match this setting too.
Final Cut Express version 4.0.1
iMovie 09 Version 8.0.2 (821)
iMac 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running
Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
My Final Cut Express scratch disk is a Seagate 2TB external USB 2.0 Hard Drive that has been formatted to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This external disk is also where iMovie successfully captured all the video from the same camera. Thanks for the answer. It makes me sad. I thought using Final Cut Express would be an upgrade to a more robust editing system from iMovie, yet iMovie does a superior job of logging and capturing video from HDV video on miniDV tape in comparison to FCE. Not only does iMovie capture each clip on the tape into it's own video file automatically, it also includes timestamp information in the filename indicating when the clip was originally recorded, which appears to be something that is missing from Final Cut Express. Now I realize that HDV miniDV cameras had a relatively short life span in the consumer marketplace and have since all been replaced by flash and hard drive based AVCHD cameras, but from circa 2004 to 2007, miniDV HDV camcorders were very popular and I am sure there are lots of consumers that must be super frustrated by Final Cut Express limited ability to log and capture clips properly from these cameras.
Assuming I do not want to make a rough cut of video in iMovie and prefer to begin my editing project in Final Cut Express (not doing XML export of iMovie project), I need to determine the best way to get clips captured via iMovie into Final Cut Express and determine if there is anything inferior in the iMovie captured clips that I need to be aware of. So far it appears that both iMovie and Final Cut Express reduce the 5.1 surround sound captured on the HDV miniDV tapes to stereo sound, which is not a big lose given the 5.1 sound was recorded from camera's built-in microphone, but it makes me wonder if the video is reduced in any way by the iMovie import process, examining the video in quicktime's inspector window the video appears to be the same in both iMovie and FCE, but I'll research the answers to these questions elsewhere on this forum and post additional questions if I do not find the information I need. -
Unable to import video from Sony deck
I've been using FCE HD3.0 for well over a year with excellent results. I got tired of wearing out the heads on my camera using it to access footage so I broke down and purchased a Sony HVR-M15U editing deck. I'm able to control the device from the desktop quite well. However, every time I click the "capture now" button to import video, I get a gray screen overlaying the desktop and at the bottom it says "Allocating disk space" and my external drive(which has plenty of space) whirs for at least 3-4 minutes, after which I get another message stating, "Waiting for timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when device control enabled." This despite the fact that underneath the viewer, it states "VTR okay." I haven't been able to import a thing. Any ideas? I'm using OS10.4 with iMac G5 with Power PC chips. Thanks.
G'Day Dan,
Have you upgraded to 3.0.1?
Os 10.4 what? There was trouble with 10.4.9.
Does the deck have a Master/Slave setting?. Switch to Slave mode if so.

FCP does not support the JVC GR-HD1U but I have found that people have been successful capturing the video through Apple's DVHSCap then converting the data to .m2t transport files using MPEG Streamclip (I will post what I read below). I have downloaded DVHSCap but cannot figure out how to capture the vide from my camcorder. If anyone is familiar with DVHSCap I would very much appreciate some advice. Thank you all very much for your time!

Apple and FCP 4.5 do not yet officially support JVC's HDV camcorders.
However, I have had very good results, over the past year, using Apple Development software to capture HDV files from my GR-HD1U. Then using free-ware software to convert the resulting .m2t transport files to QuickTime .mov files. I then drop the QT.mov files into an FCP bin and edit as usual using FCP.
I use Apple's DVHSCap application to capture HDV camcorder data tapes via firewire and convert the data to .m2t transport files. DVHSCap (for Panther) can be obtained by going to:
www.apple.com/firewire/
click on 'FireWire SDK 19 for Mac OS X (Download)
double click XFireWireSDK19e.pkg (to install the SDK)
DVHSCap (and similar VirtualDVHS) can be found in
/Developer/FireWireSDK19/Applications/
I also use a freeware program 'MPEG Streamclip 1.0.1', which is available from:
http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
I use MPEG Streamclip to:
1) Locate clips of interest and set their 'in' and 'out' points,
2) Set the, optional, number of 'bad lines' to crop from the sides and top of each frame,
3) Re-scale, if desired, to 720p or 1080p,
4) Export to QuickTime...
5) Drop the resulting QT.mov file, which contains synced 'video and audio' data, into an FCP bin.I don't have experience with your JVC format or deck but here is something you may want to read.

*Important: If your computer has a PCI graphics card installed and you are logging or*
*capturing HDV footage, Final Cut Pro does not preview video or audio in the Log and*
*Capture window. You can still log and capture, but you need to use your HDV camcorder*

I realize you have 5.1 but read this entire section on HDV, it could help.

Unable to import video from DV cam.
Hi,
I am encountering a problem when I come to import video into my version of FCP 6.0.
The DV camera is detected, and I can control it through the log and capture control panel, however when I select 'capture now' FCP only captures the first 3 seconds of my tape and the stops, prodcuing the following error message:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has aborted and your clip has been saved."
I don't believe there is a problem with my tape, as it is brand new, and has not been poorly treated. I have tried winding all the way through the tape and back, I have also tried different tapes, however I still get the same error message.
I find it odd that final cut always imports 3 seconds and then errors, does anybody know the answer? Please help!
I am running a Mac Pro, 2 x 3 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, with Mac OS X V.10.4.9.
My camera is a Panasonic, although I don't think this has any bearing on the problem.
Thank you.
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9)Hi Guys,
I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to reply to me, its really appreciated.
Unfortunately I still couldn't get it to work, so I called the people themselves at Apple, and a very nice guy talked me through the basic checks, and got it to work!
It turns out that my 'easy setup - use' was set to DVCPRO - PAL, instead of DV - PAL, and my camera was not DVCPRO Compatable. I changed this, opened a new project, (changes won't take effect unless you try in a new project), and it worked fine.
Thanks again everyone, I hope this helps anybody else who might have experienced this problem. -
Best way to Capture Analog Video (via DV)
I have no issues with capturing DV video froma DV Camcorder in PRE. The process is very smooth and I really am comfortable with it. However, when I am capturing my old wedding and other personal VHS tapes (via an ADTech Pyro AV) I really hate the capture capablities within PRE ( I am use PRE 7).
I was wondering if there is any advantage to using PRE for the DV Capture for my Analog material verses using either Windows Import Video, or using some other capture program like Pinnacle Studio (which allows me to specifiy the length of the capture verses having it just run on until I stop it.) Most of my VHS tapes are 2 hours in length and I would like to be able to say capture 125 minutes then stop (so I could just run the captures at night or while I am otherwise not using the computer.) With PRE7 it will just continue capturing forever until I stop it, which creates some enormous files that then need to be trimmed.
(Does anyone know a way to tell PRE to just capture for x amount of time on a analog to DV Capture?)
Is a DV Capture the same regardless of program? Is there any advantage to actually running the capture through PRE7 verses external where I can provide better control over the length and time of the capture. If your ADS Pyro AV Link is set up right and capturing over FireWire, you should get the same quality no matter what program you use to capture -- and that quality should be as good as the original. Premiere Elements does nothing to change the video data of DV as it captures; it just saves it as it comes in.
But I would not recommend using any program or device that captures as anything other than DV-AVIs. Otherwise you're dealing with conversion issues and possibly incompatible video files, etc.
Does that answer your question? -
Looking for help on importing video in Lightroom 4.4
I am not sure when this started happening or what has changed. I went to import some video and in the import dialog box all my video files show "Preview unavailable for this file" in the thumbnail in the grid view. And if I try to import them i get a dialog box with a message that says Import Results > Some import operations were not performed. > There is a problem with the video file (1) > [Filename].AVI
I am currently using windows 8 and I have imported video to this catalog before from the same camera. The video plays fine in the video players(windows media player, quicktime, and the new video app on windows 8 that is the default player in the OS).
I went throught the http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/troubleshoot-video-issues-lightroom-4.html and did all those suggestions. I am now turning to the forums before I reach out to support.
Has anyone else run into this issue or a simililar one that may be able to give me a workaround or solution?
I am a cloud subscriber and all my programs are up to date. Windows is current, all players are current, and this specific catalog has .AVI files in it from the same camera and the firmware on the camera has never been updated since I started shooting video.
Thanks,
Alex

I seem to recall some notes that LR3 will now import video clips into a catalog. It also seems the comments stated you can't watch or edit the clips, but you can at least catalog them in LR.
Tonight I tried importing one, but when I directed Lightroom to the correct folder, it did not recognize the video clip stored there. The test clip was captured on a Canon Vixia HD camcorder and saved as AVCHD in an MTS extension on a PC. Some of the new Nikon cameras are now capable of recording video clips. Not sure what format they are saved in on the cards. Is there something I need to know about importing my videos from a folder on my hard drive?
Is this feature a little ahead of its time and not quite ready? I was hoping to test it tonight and was curious if I double clicked on a clip whether either LR or my Windows system would play the clip.
Thanks in advance,
M. JacksonIn addition to its limited support for video formats, LR 3 also is limited in its ability to handle video metadata -- you can't change the capture time and you can't write metadata (capture time, caption, keywords, rating, etc.) back to the files or sidecars.

Trying to import video"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"
When I try to import a video into Photoshop CS6 I get the error: "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".
I have tried multiple formats with no luck.
I was able to improt it into Photoshop CS5 by dragging and dropping.
Im using Photoshop CS 6 64bit, have tried 32bit with no luck
If I try to drag and drop it, I get this error: could not place the document. Because no parser or file format can open the file.
I have tried opening a .mov, and a .avi file. I thought it might be a codec thing but why can cs5 open it but not cs6?
I noticed other posts with the same issue but they did not get resolved. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
JoshVurgano, Powelly 100, and izzysanime,
Has the issue been resloved?
If so, how was it resolved?
I see Yesughei and Powelly are on Win7.
Izzysanime, which Win OS are you using?
Vurgano, what platform/OS are you using?
We are still investigating this issue and would appreciate your assistance.
To rule out problems with the files you have, could you please verify the Photoshop CS5 sample file "CheeziPuffs.mov" will also not work? (program files\adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\samples)
Also would you please verify the following:
Virus/security/parental control software hasn't trapped parts of Photoshop, Bridge, Premiere, Lightroom, or any Adobe app using DynamicLinkMediaServer. (Make sure the Adobe apps are added as exceptions if needed.)
Ensure you have the latest version of QuickTime
Close all Adobe applications - wait more than 30 seconds, then launch Photoshop and try to open the file.
- If unsuccessful, view Task Manager/Processes to verify necessary processes started up when importing video (dynamiclinkmanager.exe, dynamiclinkmediaserver.exe and Adobe QT32 Server.exe)
- If unsuccessful, please capture the full error message text.
4. Close all Adobe apps, wait 30 seconds - launch Bridge and try to open the file.
If everyone is on Win 7, it makes me wonder about permissions...
Thanks,

Importing video from canon zr950
i can't import video from from canon zr950 as my macbook does not have a firewire port and the usb port does not recognize video camera. any other alternatives to importing the video from mini dv?
You really do need a firewire port on your computer to import DV.
One option would be to call the store manager of a nearby Apple Store, and politely ask if you can come in and use one of his computers that has firewire to capture your movie.
If your camcorder has a feature that let's you play it on TV through RCA cables (Red, White, and Yellow) or S-Video cable, then it is possible that you could capture using the ElGato EyeTV Hybrid. However, I have not tested this, and I would hesitate to tell you to spend $100+ if I am not sure. I may have time to test it next year some time. Even if it works, it will not be at the quality of the original DV. Would the quality difference by visible? That is another thing to test. -
Importing video from a JVC HD7U camcorder into iMovie 11
I am having trouble importing video from a JVC HD7U camcorder into iMovie 11. The import screen shows up and recognizes the camera with the time counter activating but there is no image on the screen and the record or import buttons do not seem to do anything. I have followed the instructions from the manual and others found online. Someone please help. Terry
Hi Brady,
I have a new Everio HD that I have been fooling with all day. Finally got a clip into iMovie 6 ....but only once and I'm still figuring this out too.....if you are not using a HD camera this may or may not work for you.
The Everio Quicktime extension must be installed. (Download and install the patch if you upgrade to Leopard).
Is your camera an HD? If so you need to capture the clip in 1440 CDR not FHD (FullHighDef).
Launch iMovie 6. Create a new movie in Video format HDV 1080i . then plug in your camera via firewire.
Put the camera in playback mode (Play/REC), press the Function, select Dubbing Playback (bottom of the menu). You should get a menu with a start button now. Switch to iMovie 6 and select "Import". This should start the clip playing from the camera....you may have to hit the Start on the camera.
This should get your clips into i Movie.
We may be ably to create playlists and get them in that way too but I have not had any luck with the JVC instructions to do this. There are video tutorials on the JVC website too but again they have not worked for me.
There is also a way to get and work the FHD files but that is a USB file transfer followed by a file conversion. I'll tackle that a little later...
Good luck,

Importing Video From a Sony HVR-Z5E into Adobe Premiere CS5
Hi,
I am importing video from the Sony HVR-Z5E straight into Premiere using the capture option off the file menu but the colour looks completely different to what it looks like on the camera. Why should this be? When I preview the video in the capture window the video looks fine. its just after I have captured it.
OS: Windows 7 x64
RAM: 3 GB
Please HELP??!!??
Many ThanksEither your camera or your monitor is not properly calibrated. Lucky for you, capturing is just a transfer of digital data without any modification at all, just like copying files from A to B. They do not change in the copy process. So either it is in the eye of the beholder or you monitor is not properly calibrated or you are just imagining things.
Wish you luck with editing HDV on such a system.
