Capturing in Mpeg but want AVI

The school has recently purchased new PC's and the CS3 package.
On previous PC's I was able to capture in AVI from our Sony HDV cameras into Premiere 1.5.
On the new PC's with Premiere Pro CS3 it captures in mpeg. Any ideas why this is and how I can capture in AVI again? No-one seems to have the answer! I'm so worried about my students projects.
I've heard that mpeg is only going to provide difficulties.

This question is for my edification, but is in keeping with the OPs questions (or at least, I hope that it is).
Are you saying that the Sony HDV camera (assuming its the same model, etc., used in captures with PP 1.5) will allow output to either DV, or HDV, via its settings?
I was unaware that PP 1.5 could handle any HDV footage, unless converted to DV. Is that correct? If so, then that conversion was likely done by the camera - correct?
In PP-CS3, would that in-camera conversion still be possible, in this case? Other than losing the HDV capability, and its resolution, etc., would there be any drawbacks with the students doing it that way, of the purpose of editing in class? Now, if the camera shoots natively MPG-2, how badly is that in-camera conversion likely to be?
Provided that the schools computers can handle editing the HDV material, would the class be better off keeping the native format, taking your above caveats into consideration?
i Be patient and deliberate in your editing; assume a certain fragility to these files, and give Premiere time to process them after you import them. Save incremented versions of your projects often.
Hope I have not taken this too off-topic, but Im trying to shore-up MY education, for when/if I ever launch into HDV (by whatever means) taping, capture and editing.

Using iMove HD to capture in Mpeg-4 format

I have iMovie HD 5.0.2 and was wondering if there is anyway for me to capture video that is saved directly in Mpeg-4 format instead of as a DV clip. I noticed that when you start a new project in iMovie HD, you can select between the ff video formats: DV, HD, Mpeg-4 and iSight. So I assumed that if I select Mpeg-4, than it would capture my video footage from my DV cam (a sonypc350) as Mpeg-4. But it doesn't. It still caputers it as a DV clip. So is there anyway that I can capture in Mpeg-4 format using iMovie HD. My DV cam has analog to digital pass through and I'm trying to figure out a way to create a make-shift TiVo kinda system with the tools I have available.

Nope.
iM's internal file format/compressor is dv, any other will/has to be converted...
besides:
mp4 is a lossy codec - you will never get the pic quality as dv...-
video editing is a disk drive consuming process - no workaround.

MPEG vs. AVI

I am a new Mac owner and a basic iDVD user. I've dropped and dragged my photos to create slideshows and now I'm trying to add some video clips from two different digital cameras. One camera uploaded the videos to iPhoto in AVI format, and those drag easily to iDVD. However, the other camera uploaded in MPEG form and iDVD "cannot support the action" of dragging those MPEG files into iDVD. I tried uploading them to iMovie and then dragging them to iDVD. It worked, but without audio.
Is there a way to convert the MPEG files to AVI? Or alternatively, a way to easily get those MPEG files into IDVD with sound?

Welcome to the forums.
Luckily your avi file could be converted to a format compatible with iDVD. The mpeg files are compressed and need to be converted to DV Stream (.dv) for greatest compatibility. You can do this with MPEG Streamclip (plus you'll probably need Apple's MPEG plug-in). Visual Hub is another likely option, as is Roxio Toast.

anybody know of a good freeware that converts mpeg-4 to .avi or .vob so i can then burn it to a DVD?

You can convert VOB files to another format by using the shareware FFMPegX. You can also convert straight from a DVD to MP4 by using Handbrake. Also, a Mac/PC app called Avidemux will open and convert VOB/MPEG2 files.
I recommend the MPEG-2 plug-in because you can use MPEG Streamclip and convert the VOB files to DV MOV, which can be imported straight into FCE without additional rendering. The other free software mentioned above will work, but FCE may require rendering. But . . . they will work!

If it's an Intel Mac, you can upgrade it to Mac OS X 10.6.8.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, you need to use these instructions and/or iTunes Match to put content on the iPad.

What's the origin of this external drive? It sounds very much like it's a Windows-formatted (NTFS) drive which Macs can't write to. If you can, copy the files off the drive, reformat it as Mac format (using Disk Utility) and copy the files back. If you need to continue writing to it from a Windows PC, you should format it ExFAT in Disk Utility.

I didn't understand the option to Inherit or start a new back up, and therefore selected the option to create a new backup. I believe I should have selected to Inherit backup history so that when i back it up on the new MackBook Air, it appears the same as the one I'm returning.... Is there anyway that i can re-select the option to Inherit backup history for time machine?

In case you're not clear - iPad/iPhone storage, and iCloud storage, are totally separate. Buying more iCloud storage does not give you more storage space on your device. Your device has a fixed storage space for apps and data (e.g., 16GB - which is more like 12GB in real terms). iCloud storage just allows you to store more documents, mail, photos, etc, in the cloud.

To get it on your Mac Pro just copy the aplication from the aplication folder on your MacBook. You can do this via a thumb drive or over a local network connection.

No, you can't do what you want. Apple will only ship a US iPhone to a verified billing/shipping address in the US.

I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups. Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
1. Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
2. Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
3. iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
4. Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
5. Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
