Capturing MiniDV, then deinterlacing it?

Hi. I'm trying to do something very very simply in iMovie HD, but failing miserably.
I want to import some DV-PAL-Widescreen MiniDV footage from my digital camcorder, get a nice big uncompressed .dv file on my desktop, deinterlace, then import it back into iMovie HD for editing and final exporting.
The stage where this is going wrong is deinterlacing. I've put the .dv file through JES Deinterlacer, but the file that software exports has a Normal Size of 787 x 576, not 768 x 576. This is causing problems when I re-import the deinterlaced .dv file back into iMovie HD, because iMovie doesn't recognise it as an anamorphic PAL-Widescreen file, and displays it as 4:3 within a 16:9 frame. So it's stretched, and has black bars to the left and right of it. Not good.
I'm sure lots of people have solved this problem before. I just wish I knew how.

- iMovie HD has a preference setting for Automatic DV Pillarboxing & Letterboxing
This setting matters when importing 4:3 material to a 16:9 DV Widescreen project (pillarboxing), or when importing 16:9 material to a 4:3 DV project (letterboxing) from a camcorder.
Unchecking the "iMovie HD/Preferences.../Import/Automatic DV Pillarboxing & Letterboxing" setting doesn't do those actions automatically after importing and when switching to edit mode.
If for some reason that settings doesn't seem to work, you can try to save and quit the project immediately after importing (do NOT switch to edit mode!). When you then open the project, there should be no pillarboxing or letterboxing.

Capturing minidv - no dates?

Hi,
This may be a noobie question and i've tried to search for answers, but i'm not sure exactly what to search on
problem: capturing minidv consumer tape, previously shot last year, but I can't see the time or dates from the various scenes. The client, a friend of mine, has asked for the date to be shown. I don't think it can?
Is this something that should have been done with the 'data' setting of their camcorder? ie. using this setting would have 'printed' timecode or time data to the tape which could be then read?
I d-checked my transfer camcorder and it's set to show any dates. I also dropped the full transfer file into catdv and no data is shown either.

Unfortunately, there is no way to recover that metadata in FCP. It's silly and we've been screaming about it for years. You might check some of the plugin sites for FCP and FCE. Someone may have published a filter that performs the task for you. (Sorry, I'm not at my FCP machine that has all those URLs on it.)
You can recapture via composite, if you have the capability, but there's no way to make the tape data show up on the FW feed.

Disk full message capturing miniDV footage

Hi,
This is my first attempt to use FCE and I have a network setup that is primarily Windows XP.
I set a new FCE project to capture miniDV footage from a cheap JVC camcorder. The capture started okay but terminated after approx 9 minutes reporting an error message indicating the disk was full.
My Macbook had 9.9 gig free (which was not set as the location for scratch) and my Maxtor Shared Storage II drive had 250 gig free. This is set as scratch.
I had a look at the files created by the capture. It had created a quicktime file, named "Untitled1" in the folder "Untitled Project 1" that was 2 gig in size.
I seem to recall that Windows files are limited to 2gig and suspect this is the actual error.
I have also read in the FCE help re a similar type of problem that can be resolved by formatting the drive using the Mac disk Utility.
The drive I have been using is a 500gb mirrored Maxtor Shared Storage II connected via a network router. However if I need to dedicate a drive over to FCe / Mac usage I will be using a 500gig (unmirrored) Maxtor Shared Storage Drive (previous model) also conencted to the network via 10/100 network connection.
Could anyone confirm I have got this error correctly interpreted and if anyone has any experience with these drives and Mac's that would also be helpful.
The drives are spec'd to support Mac files but do not specifically support AFS. They show as NTFS via Windows XP interface but I do not know how to get this info via the Mac as yet. I will also be contacting Maxtor support via this. Its the FCE help I would really appreciate.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was rather hoping direct connection to the mac would not be essential as the drive does not have a firewire port, only USB2 x 2 and the ethernet connnection.
What if the connection is 100/1000 mbits. Would this comms method still be unreliable?
If I do need to get a new drive, what would be the minimum size you would recommend? I guess a type with a small footprint would be good so that, if it must be directly connected, I might as well take advantage of portability too (as I only have a MacBook).

Seems to capture but then won't quit after ESC pressed?

We have new XRAID with Apple FC interface & running on Mac G5 and 10.3.9. We use FinalCutPro 4.5 and it all seems to capture but then won't quit after ESC pressed. The pinwheel spins and the Mac is unaccessible then after maybe 3 hours it finishes and everythings ok. Way too much time for a 15 minute capture! Aja Kona2 capture card and they have had me adjust the settings in the xraid admin but no change. Capture of a few seconds are usually finalized instantly. Any Clues?

Same problem if you don't choose capture now ?? I've always though capture now to the raid was a BIG NO NO.

Capture more then 2 Audio Sources in FCP7

I was reading some older posts about this topic but was wondering if I could capture more then 2 audio sources in FCP7. I am capturing video from a sony fx1000 using a shotgun mic and wireless mics and am using the HDV - 1080i60 settings in the Easy Setup menu and connecting with Firewire. Is there a way to capture and seperate both audio sources?

I think if you have a captured card that has more than 2 audio inputs, you can capture more audio tracks simultaneously.
Don't work with HDV much, but I know with DV material with 4 channels of audio with 32k sampling, you can capture all 4 tracks by customizing a capture preset to capture channels 3 and 4. it will require a second pass of capturing.

Basic Questions - capturing miniDV, exporting to DVD?

I apologize for the basic questions, but it's been a while since I've done this start to finish...like five years.
I shot a bunch of miniDV sports footage on a Canon GL2 and I am digitizing the footage via firewire (straight from my camera to my computer). I am using Final Cut HD. The output will be to DVD.
The Easy Setup is set to DV-NTSC. The sequence and capture settings are both set to DV-NTSC 48kHz.
1. Under system settings > playback control > What are the correct settins for "RT", "video quality" and "pulldown pattern"? Do these ultimately affect the output quality?
2. What is the "best" way to output to DVD (using the least compression, looking the best)? The end product will be about 35 minutes long. Should I output to QT and burn in DVD studio Pro, or "print to video" using an external DVD burner via a Sony converter box (how I used to export to VHS)?

Depending upon whether you mean desperate in terms of time required to deliver the project or just for a solution, you can quickly output to DVD using iDVD as follows.
If the FCP project resides on the same computer as iDVD (or a connected FW drive), simply 'export' - 'quicktime movie' (uncheck the 'make movie self-contained' checkbox and use 'current settings')
Open iDVD and drag the resultant quicktime file into one of the themes you have chosen. (In the iDVD preferences set to NTSC and as the project is less than 60 mins you can use 'best quality' or 'best performance'. (There is no option to compress audio in idVD)
The iDVD interface is pretty straight forward to negotiate.
You will have more control over the output quality using DVDSP, but the learning curve is a little steeper than iDVD, however the DVDSP tutorial manual is very good for a quick start - you have 2 options in DVDSP, either use compressor to compress audio and video before authoring the disc in DVDSP or drag the afore mentioned quicktime file into the assets pane of DVDSP and let DVDSP do the compression.
(I'm not an expert, but I believe this method doesn't give you the option to compress the audio - compressing the audio is one way of giving you more latitude in giving the video better quality)
So I reckon that to get the best results you ought to compress using compressor before bringing into DVDSP.

Along with the DVDSP tutorial manual, I authored and outputted a 60 min DVD with 2 menus and chapters, using Compressor and the DVDSP templates having had no prior experience at all with either Compressor or DVDSP in less than a day and I'm not particularly competent, so I know these 2 resources are user friendly.

2. J1I5 .. update part1 wrt the GRN document number
3. J1IEX .. capture wrt the GRN document number and enter all details of excise invoice
4. J1iEX .. post the excise invoice

Capturing more then 4 hours

Why FCP (5.1) stop Capturing after 4 hours.
I'm Capturing from the TV cable box to my BlackMagic card and the Capturing stop after 4 hours, I try to this on another mac and it's sopt at the same point.
What is worng?

Hi - welcome to the board.
Head into fcp Menu>System Settings and adjust the defaults there.
I have no idea what format you're capturing and what you are capturing to. Make sure you have ample disc space for the codec you are capturing.
If there are no constraints then fcp will write to disc.
Maybe there is something you can alter in the BMD set up ???

Begins capture and then stops (says problem with tape)

When I try to capture (whether it is with Clip or Now) the capture begins for three seconds and then stops citing a problem with the data. The menu suggests that there may be a problem with the DV tape. (I can preview with no problem). I've tried many tapes and all have the same result leading me to think there's something up with the program.
I haven't specified any system preferences other than what is suggested for default. The program recognizes and controls my device with no problem. I just can't capture. What should I do?
I'm using a Panasonic DV NV-MX8EN (Asia model).

If you have an anti-virus app running, disable it.
Also try switching off File Vault if it's on.

Capturing MiniDV video...

Hello one and all,
I have a Satellite P305 with 3GB of RAM running Vista Home Premium on a core-duo @1.86 Mhtz each. I have a Canon GL1 video camera and would like to be able to capture video from it. The camera uses the MiniDV format, which means that it uses Firewire. I would like to know if anyone here has a solution to capturing video from Firewire to USB or using a Firewire "adaptor" of some kind. I was concerned that the PCMCIA card would bottleneck the capture, and my understanding is that there is currently no Firewire to USB solution available (Or ever will be...). If anyone is doing this, I would GREATLY appreciate having the ability to do this. I am a Telecommunications and Film student and it would be so nice to be able to shoot and edit on MY laptop rather than going to a media lab on my campus. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Well, not knowing which P305 model you have...
Some of them appear to have a 4 pin Firewire port. Some cameras may need a 6 pin port though, but maybe all you'll need is a cable and the appropriate software.
Otherwise, the computer has Express Card slots.

Trouble capturing miniDV tapes - timecode loss, jaggy/noisy input

I had the unfortunate pleasure of purchasing a Canon MV20i camcorder back in 1999. I recorded 23 tapes up until 2004, when the camera refused to work any more. I had it serviced in 2003, but the problems with playback of tapes continued shortly after. At the time I lived in a part of the world where servicing was hard to come by, so I gave up and never used the camera again (it does not work any how). I tried contacting Canon, but never got a proper answer or support. I also swore never to purchase a Canon product again.... which I have kept so far.
Now with about 23 hours worth of video footage of kids growing up, travels etc – are still on those tapes. Recording was done in SP mode, except for a few of the tapes. However, I am not able to play them without this noisy/jagged interference and frequent drop of audio / timecode. I have tried capturing using a few different camcorders and iMovie, but the result is useless, hundreds and thousands of frames and audio bits lost and iMovie usually just gives up. In the process of trial and error I have discovered that the tapes seem to play well when I reduce the speed of playback to 2/3 or 1/3 (no sound) on a Final Cut Pro installation at a video editing friend of mine. However, the capturing seems to exclusively work at 1:1 speed. Is there NO way to import/capture at reduced speed AND get the timecode+audio correctly transferred?
I would be grateful for advice on this and hopefully there is a solution for iMovie or FCP that I could adopt.

Sorry, canon cameras are basically junk. Great still cameras, great broadcast lenses, crap for DV. If the tapes play in a camcorder or deck, I's dub them to fresh tape and THEN try to capture them. Start the recrding deck first, so you generate new timecode.

Capture MiniDV tape as one clip

I am doing my first MiniDV tape capture. I rewound the tape, clicked play and Capture Now. When the tape was done, it was divided up into clips. I don't want this. How do I import it as one clip? (it broke it up into 5 clips of varying length) this is a friends home video.

If you are working with DV/NTSC or DV/PAL material, Final Cut Pro does not automatically segment the capture (unless there are time code breaks).
If you have HDV footage, I believe there is a check box somewhere in the capture settings to turn off the automatic clip generation.

Premiere Pro crashes while capturing minidv

Hi all, I'm using Premiere Pro CS5 with the latest updates, running on a 2010 Mac Pro with dual quad xeons, an ATI Radeon HD 5770 (is this the problem, not being an Nvidia card) and 6gb of ram. Osx 10.6.4.
When capturing from a minidv camera Premiere crashes after roughly 20 minutes of capture and trashes what it has captured. I have tried to capture with or without scene detect with the same result. Having just switched to Premiere Pro and to Mac from Sony Vegas 8 which was a rock solid editing platform I find this rather infuriating.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thankyou.

Module comment form returns invalid capture and then unable to rate?

Hi,
I have added a comment form to my clients posts on LizClegg.com Blog Post
To achieve this I just added the module, comment form to the blog posts details layout template.
This has been unsuccessful as every time I test, the first attempt returns the error;
"- Please enter the correct Word Verification as seen in the image"
and then the second attempt returns;
"ERROR: You are not able to rate this type of item."
Any suggestions please?

Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0 - 5 minute captures then freeze

Something I have found with Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0.
After Updating to Tiger - 10.4.11 and Quicktime 7.4.1 - Both Pro 4.5 and Express 3.0 will not capture more then 5 minutes and 12 seconds. If you are having this issue the solution I used to fix both Pro and Express issues was an update on the software. Final Cut Pro 5 fixed the problem (or 6 if you can) and with Final Cut Express, version 3.5 fixed the issue but if you can go with FCX 4.
Let me know if this helped or if you have found a different solution. Downgrading the os might help but that is too much of a pain and it's time to upgrade the software anyway.

The Final Cut software is looking for a graphics card type that is required for that version of the software. FCP 4 and FCP 4.5 were released when AGP cards were the requirement. Attempting to open this on a Mac with a PCIe graphics card, such as an Intel Mac, will cause this error. FCP 4.5 is not supported on the Intel Macs. If you happen to have a PowerPC Quad processor Mac and get this error, you can try this hack:

You can also press the "esc" key as you launch FCP. This enables FCP to open and run, but know that it might not work optimally.
If that doesn’t work, or if you have an Intel Mac, you are going to have to upgrade to a supported version of FCP…and FCP 6, part of Final Cut Studio 2, is the latest version.
