Yes, you can do a screen recording using the application QuickTimePlayer
QuickTime Player > File > New Screen Recording
Click the QuickTimePlayer help menu for details.
To stop the recording you can use the shortcut command +control +esc

Those choices are controlled via System Preferences, Trackpad.

Capture Image from Screen and Yosemite Mail

Composing a new mail message in Yosemite. If use the pull-down option to Capture Image from Screen and place the image in the message body (HTML), the image is not being sent with the message. A broken image icon is sent instead.
If, on the other hand, I use the paperclip to add an image file to the message body all is well. Same if I copy and paste an image into the message body.
In both those cases where it works, I also get the Markup pulldown to edit the image. In the Capture Image from Screen case where it doesn't work I also don't get the Markup pulldown menu and options.
Anyone else seeing this? Is it a known bug with Yosemite or just on my side?

Unable to capture movie from camcorder.

I had tried to capture a movie from HDV camcorder for the first time since I updated to 10.5,
and got a green and pink image from iMovie. It looked like signals been mixed or track is off.
Then I tried with Quicktime and it seemed like working in the beginning but at the end of the clip
an error occurs saying unable to save the movie. FCP HD crashes trying to do capture either.
Anyone with similar symptoms? Any troubleshoot check list anyone?

yes, my powerbook is too slow to capture at full resolution, so I've tried with smaller size w/
'better' setting, i believe w/.264 encoding, but still i got an error. I don't know why this happen.
i had no problem before upgrading to 10.5. i checked the mini DV tape for any defect playing
it back and capture but it's not the cause. I was able to capture same tape with same camcorder
on my new iMac D2C .1.5.1 at my office. perhaps something to do with G4 or PPC version of OS...

Nice MOV from Screen Recording - Import to iMovie looks degraded

Hi,
I am wondering why I have a great MOV file from a Mac screen recording program, with audio, and this looks fantastic when viewed with Quicktime.
Then I import into iMovie and it looks much degraded.
I don't use iMovie a lot, but I figured MOV quality should look the same when imported into iMovie.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Welcome bdemil to the  iMovie boards ...
some misunderstanding:
iMovie is meant for PAL/NTSC content.. any other formats/resoltuions get converted = loss of quality..
and: .mov is nor format, just a container; your Mac can display many codecs.. but only very few 'fit' into iMovie..
I mostly doubt, any screenrecording fullfills the 'video' standards.. (interlaced, framerate, resolution...)
for handling off-standard videos, QuicktimePro or MpegStreamclip offer some basic editing features...

It sounds as if you have Voiceover enabled on your iPhone. You can turn it off by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Voiceover. See this page -

I have captured a VHS movie from a VCR to my Mac. I used a Roxie program and it said "capture to IMovie". I said yes. It shows in my events with a green asterisks but it is not showing up in iMovie, It is in my doc but won't go into iMovie. Why?

I used a Roxie program to bring in my video from VHS. I know it's in my computer and when I right click in the event in IMovie and click "capture movie, a screen comes up showing it but it won't capture it and bring it into IMovie. What am I doing wrong

Firefox can find plugins in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" plugin folder so older installers like the Microsoft Windows Media Plugin no longer drop the DLL file in the correct location.
There apparently are two ways to address this:
(1) Change a Firefox preference so that Firefox checks the old location. Here's how:
(i) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(ii) In the filter box, type or paste '''plugins''' and pause while the list is filtered
(iii) Double-click '''plugins.load_appdir_plugins''' to switch its value from false to true.
This will take effect after you restart Firefox.
(2) Copy the plugins folder to the new location. Here's how on Win 7 64-bit:
Open a Windows Explorer window to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Right-click and copy the '''Plugins''' folder
Double-click the '''browser''' folder to open it
Right-click and paste
Right-click the new copy of '''Plugins''' and rename it to '''plugins'''
After restarting Firefox, the plugins in that folder should now be available.

Snapz Pro X screen capture Movies into FCEHD

I make educational tutorials for educators. I also created a weekly vodcast/show with a FCE HD intro. I wish to import the SnapzProX 2.0.3 (SP) vids into the FCEHD intro and export for vodcast for web streaming. My vodcast will premeir in the fall of 2007.
I found that SP seems to best export to FCEHD as an animated movie file. However, I am unsure of how to get the best quality mp4 when exporting from FCEHD. What are the best settings to get a 640 X 480 web video. I can go smaller, but in many cases my teachers wish to see a larger video so they can read the text on the screen. Am I stuck with a tiny 320 x 280 window for tutorials on the web?
I tried manually upping the size when exporting to mp4 and the video was extremely blurry.
File size is an issue... my tutorials are short (about 2-5 minutes) annd I wish to keep them under 20MB.
I watch Atomic learning vids (www.atomiclearning.com)that are fairly clear and can stream from the web. I called them and they also use Snapz ProX for screen capture.
Any ideas on how to export from FCEHD to the web and still have a fairly clear video?

The codec with the best quality to size ratio is H264. This is what the trailers on Apple's quicktime site are made with, and is capable of very high quality results with (relatively) small file sizes. However, it requires that people have Quicktime 7 installed in order to view it. To support older versions of Quicktime, I would next recommend the mpeg4 codec at around 300Kb/s. You might have some trouble staying under 20MBs at 640x480, though.
You mentioned blurry video when you uprezed to 640x480. You must remember to always convert from your highest resolution. If you converted a file from 320x240 to 640x480, it will get very distorted and pixelated. Also, if you're coming out of SP at a resolution smaller than 640x480, you will also get bad results. Remember to always record at the highest resolution/quality possible.
There is never any one size fits all here. It all depends on what the source material is (graphics and low movement always compress better than live action and high movement. Screen text tends to compress poorly), and what the needs of your viewers are (size vs bandwidth). So your best bet would be to run a lot of tests with a multitude of configurations on a short sample of your project. Then pick the one that seems most suitable.

Screen-captured movies are pixelated

I am capturing video from my screen as I navigate within a software application (we are making training videos). The Quicktime movie that is produced at the end of the capture is flawless, but when I bring it into Final Cut Express, the final movie is pixelated and un-readable. I am using an application called iShowU to do the capture and have the video set at MAX and 40 frames/sec.
Has anyone had success capturing video from the screen and incorporating that video into Final Cut Express? I am also having similar trouble with images exported from PowerPoint, even when they are exported at 1200DPI PNG.

If you intend to output on video, like tape or DVD, then the way to do the screen capture is to rent a scan converter and record in a digital video medium, either on tape or directly to computer in a correct standard video format.
If you're going to deliver on the web then you can use computer resolution to scan your material. You would however then need to work with a resolution independent editing application that can work in different codecs that are suitable for this, like Final Cut Pro.
If you are only doing simple editing and trimming you might also be able to use the QuickTime Pro player to trim and assemble screen captures.

A brief and probably non-helpful answer: I know of no way to eliminate your large amount of duplicates other than by repetitive, tedious manual effort.

No problem.
This is a user forum so you are not addressing Apple. There's nothing to fix, that's how home-sharing works. There would be no way for the ATV to recognize your library and display content if the computer is in sleep mode.
You can always airplay from an IOS device or use icloud if you don't wish to keep the computer on.

Downloaded a movie from iTunes to my iPad. 2 minutes into the movie it stopped and My Videos is stuck in black screen mode. So basically rented a movie and never watched it.

The EXACT same thing happened to me last night! Rented a movie; it had barely started and then froze. When I touch the video app icon, all I get is a blank, dimly lit screen. None of the other videos I own will display either. Was your problem ever resolved?
