Capturing non-drop-frame as drop-frame??

I have to capture a bunch of amateur tapes shot with various cameras. Ultimate destination is NTSC DV. I have a sense that if I capture the non-drop-frame in a standard NTSC DV setup that I might have some buggy problems. Or at least the batch capture is telling me so.
I've never come across this problem before. What should I do? I'm just trying to build a movie database for a CEO using all the stuff he's collected from various sources - wanting all the captured material to be easily editable in FCP.
Any help would be most appreciated,
Ben

Well, after trying most of the suggestions here, I did find a reasonably hassle free workaround to capturing the hour and fifteen minute footage of 8 bit 32 kHz video to FCP with minimal sync slippage over the length of the footage.
I finally gave up on capturing the material in FCP and instead hooked the canon z80 up to an old version of Toast Platinum 6 I had on my computer. Toast creates a raw quicktime movie file with the extension .dv. Toast then allows you to edit that quicktime file, add chapters, button pictures, etc. thereby making a new file to replace the raw QT it first created. After some experimentation, I discovered that the original raw QT file Toast creates can simply be dragged intact to the FCP browser window, where it becomes a clip with minimal sync problems. I would caution against trying to use the second improved QT file that Toast creates after you've edited your file, as this second QT movie seems less stable than the raw one it first creates.
A final caveat for Toast users. Make sure you set the preferences so that they don't DELETE the original file it creates. There are settings that will tell Toast to do just that either After a Day, After a Week, When You Close the Program or Never. I'd set that to Never, since it can be highly unpleasant to discover that your program has deleted the very file you were planning to work with.
Hope this is of some help.
Thanks to all who pitched in and offered suggestions. Your help has been invaluable!
I now mark this issue Solved. Or at least as Solved as I plan to get it!

  • Non drop from a drop frame source

(back story) We search footage from proxy files then recapture at full rez
I logged footage and made new batch capture log files. I went to capture the footage and FCP said I was about to capture non drop frame footage from a drop frame source. It doesn't do this if i log with a tape in the deck.
So my question is, how can I make logs without tapes in the decks and then batch capture and not have this problem?

when you log from a tape in the deck FCP, the communication between FCP and the deck lets FCP know whether the source is Drop or non drop code.
When you log by hand you need to tell FCP whether the code is drop or non drop
Generally speaking colons in the TC means non drop and semicolons denotes drop frame.
What codes are your proxies showing?

  • Records alternate between non drop frame and drop frame...

I am seeing a pattern with Premiere records, that alternate the records from being non drop frame to drop frame.  So one day we recorded 7 segments.  The records ended up coming out like this (without any changes being made between records):
Segment 1 - non drop frame
    Segment 2 - drop frame
Segment 3 - non drop frame
    Segment 4 - drop frame
Segment 5 - non drop frame
    Segment 6 - drop frame
Segment 7 - non drop frame
Is this from a hidden setting we can't find, or is this a known bug?

    Hi Angela,
I'm following up with you from your Tweets on Twitter. As I mentioned there, we have seen similar issues in Premiere Pro CC (7.0.1) but they were fixed. It is possible that they could be rearing up again, so I would encourage you to file a bug report: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug
Further, I would contact AJA support. They have released new drivers very recently, which may assist your issue.
You are also free to contact Adobe support. When you are connecting via phone or chat, ask for the video queue: Contact Customer Care

  • Forever Theme Frames around drop zone pictures - can I remove them?

I'm using the forever theme. There are frames around drop zone photo's - not buttons. I've tried hitting the buttons bar with the drop zone highlighted and clicking the none button - but it stays with a white boarder around it. So - i looked in the theme contents - but I don't find anything that looks like a white frame... I checked out the plist file -and it looked all compiled - funny script and all - any way to eliminate these frames? I use a lot of transparent gifs for the purpose that I don't want a frame around them - so they just float over the background.

    Does this help?
    From the iDvd Help Menu:
Repositioning an image or movie in a drop zone
When you drag a picture or movie into a drop zone, the aspect ratio of the image is preserved, but it is scaled larger or smaller to fill the drop zone. As a result, sometimes part of the image is cut off and does not appear in the drop zone. In this case, you can move the image to choose which portion is visible in the drop zone.
To reposition an image or movie in a drop zone:
1.) From the drop zone on the menu (not in the drop zone editor), click the image or movie and press Command.
2.) Drag the image until the part you want is visible in the drop zone.
Keep these things in mind as you position an image:
If you drag a narrow image to a drop zone, the image is scaled vertically, and you can move the image up or down only.
If you drag a wide image to a drop zone, the image is scaled horizontally, and you can move the image side to side only.
If you accidentally drag the image too far, you will remove it from the drop zone. (The cursor changes from a hand to a puff of smoke.) Choose Edit > Undo to restore the image to the drop zone.
Repositioning a movie in a drop zone is different from selecting which part of a movie shows in a drop zone (which allows you to select which frame of the movie is displayed in a drop zone). For more information, see Related Topics below.

  • Export Quicktime = stalling / frame rate / dropped frames

Firstly this issue isn't news. It appears it has existed since 2002 at least on these forums and Apple has done nothing.
    Exporting to Quicktime:
    1) Keynote makes up what seem to be consistent random frame rates on export
    - Codec doesn't matter. Photo JPG, Intermediate, 8bit 422, H264
    - You can set the frame rate in export / custom / settings it doesn't matter
    - Having no video on a slide or having video on a slide doesn't change the problem...
    - The last two items do have more information to complete their story
    - If you do have a video on slide at say 25fps and export (at same rate) the random will stabilise
but it will stabilise to something bizarre, such as 23.69.
    - So Keynote can wreck your frame rate it will drop frames, or even add frames while dropping
others. It is deeply sophisticated in how it destroys stuff on export.
    Result
    - is a stuttering output if embed video on a slide with a wrecked frame rate
    - and a random frame rate if you don't have a video embed
    2) The video stalls between slides
    - Keynote seems to play a trick by making a single frame span multiple frames
    - At the start of the first slide this seems to vary. The first frame can be between 7 and 33
frames depending on some strange internal logic only known to Keynote
    - Between slides it will hold the last frame of the exiting slide usually for 7 frames and hold
the first frame of the entering slide for usually the same amount.
    - No amount of change to settings such as transition delay, adding a transition, self play etc
will effect this stalling from what I can tell.
    - You can analyse the reality of the issue by dropping the resulting file into Quicktime 7 and
changing the video window "time code" display to frames by clicking on it and single framing
through the video. I have Quicktime Pro for the record.
    Notes:
    - I have every update installed and am running 10.6.2
    - I have tried it on two machines, one a clean build, server or client
    - Playing the presentation direct in Keynote does not present any of the noted issues
    - I have spent the better part of two weeks on the issue trying all sorts of combinations
    - Video of different frames rates, sizes, codecs. All useless, don't bother.
    Outcome:
    - Keynote is completely useless unless you just want to play a presentation in it
    - Dropped frames, stuttering video, stalling, mangled frame rates, fake frames
    Solutions that aren't:
    - One suggestion for video embeds is to enter a strange custom frame rate. For example a
24fps original turns into a 23.69 export, if you up the frame rate to 24.3 the resulting export
    is 24fps.
This is a truly hit and miss affair and will require a lot of testing to nail it. Unfortunately I
tested the resulting video frame count in Quicktime against the original video and...
The amount of frames is not the same. Part of my assumption is that the stalled pad frames
are being considered by Keynote and it drops some frames to fake the same length, that at
least -seems- to be part of the result, but it doesn't account for all the lost frames.
    - I have also tried just having one slide and exporting that. The same things happen regardless
How Al Gore managed to make "inconvenient truth" using Keynote is a complete mystery. Maybe on Tiger with some old version it used to work, yet from the forums it would appear it has never worked. This piece of software is a clear case of "it just doesn't work"
I hope you find this and stop hurting yourself trying to make this. I might hurt on a bit longer yet.

I can't answer in detail (I started with version 6, which I haven't used in years, so don't know what v5 did) but... a general comment
Software that old is very likely going to struggle trying to edit a VOB/MPG file copies from a DVD
If you are digitizing by playing the DVD through a conversion device you should end up with DV AVI which should edit well
Just what kind of files are you trying to edit?

  • One or more frames were dropped during playback???

I have finally complete my movie.... now when I play it back there are two clips which produce this error message:
"One or more frames were dropped during playback"
    It tells me I can:
"Turn off unlimited RT" (which is off)
"lower compression data rate" (no idea what that is)
"Close open sequences" (but Im working with the only one open)
"lowering preference for real-time audio tracks" (??)
    "increase speed of system..."
Any suggestions on an easy fix? The clips worked before... I think it was when I added a transition that they stopped working. I took out the transition but nothing changed. I even tried to delete the clips and recreate them from the original source saved on my comp. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like your drive is fast enough? Are you playing back rendered material or unrendered? Are you using Unlimited RT or Safe RT?

  • Mov files dropping video and audio frames CC 2014

I have been experiencing playback issues in Premiere and just got off the phone with Adobe support. It appears that there is known issue with .mov files dropping video and audio frames that will likely be fixed in the next release. My entire project is .mov files and we need to get some serious editing done to complete a rough cut of our film. As a bandaid, we have reverted the playback renderer to software only and I am experimenting with different preview file formats to see if I will have less dropped frames. I want to avoid converting my media from mov files at all costs as this would be very time consuming with over 100 hours of footage.
Please let me know if you have any other workarounds!

  • Motion 5 Frame Rate Dropping

So I'm using motion 5.0.7 on my 2010 MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and no other applications open and when I play video footage at 1080p at 25fps in the playback window, even if I have done nothing in the way of editing it, the frame rate drops to 7fps and lower. This is particularly frustrating as the video tends to 'jutter' when playing back?
    Any solutions?

Well, laptops don't have the most powerful GPUs in them, which is an issue for Motion.  What is the duration of this project?
Go to the Render menu (top right in Canvas) and make sure you turn off all functions you don't need (lights, shadows, etc) and drop the quality and resolution settings a bit lower.

  • Frame rate drops on 1410 and 1405 cards.

    Hi-
    I am using a 1410 and a 1405 card.
I am experiencing a problem of dropped frame rates while using imaqGrab function.  I am putting this in a timer control ( just like hlGrab example provided with nivison) and get really high frame rates and then a drop to really low frame rates.  The drop seems to be at consistant intervals.  I have tried using each card independantly to isolate problem.  Happens with each card independatly.  I have tried using a buffer and not using a buffer.  Timer control on UIR is set to 0.000 for timer interval so should be happening as fast as possible.  Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi  Blue,
How do you see the frame rate drop and how do you
    measure
it? What is the expected frame rate in your application?
    Thanks and have a
    great day.

  • Webcam frame rate, netStream frame rate, flv framerate

I'm recording Webcam to FMS 3.5 but when I play the recorded video from FMS it's choppy. I have set the camera.fps to 30 but when I trace out the currentFPS for camera it's variable and usually falls between 20 and 30. However when I play the recorded video, netStream's currentFPS returns a lower value, something closer to 10. So my question is, 1) why currentFPS of netStream is not the same as Camera's? 2) What's the actual frame rate of the recorded video (not the netStream, but FLV's)?
I've setup a test page which shows currentFPS of camera during recording as well as netStream's currentFPS during playing of recorded video from FMS:

[SE_0208] - It might be because of latency or some other reason that your frames are dropped and hence lower FPS is reported. To the first thing which you mention about camera settings, its not mandatory that when you set camera FPS to 30, you will get encoding rate of 30 FPS, it would depend upon data as well as your camera, some webcams don't support beyond certain FPS.
    2) What's the actual frame rate of the recorded video (not the netStream, but FLV's)?
[SE_0208] - If you are talking about what is reported when metadata is triggered then answer is encoding setting which your publisher uses.

  • How to transfer graphics from frames to anchored frames?

    Hi all,
    Here's the old situation:
Lots of old documents where all graphics are placed in "regular" non-anchored frames.
graphics are all scaled and positioned differently within the frames
    New situation:
new template where all graphics must be placed in anchored frames
Question: What is the quickest way to get all graphics from the old documents (unanchored frames) into the new template in anchored frames?
I have tried a number of things that DO NOT work:
copy graphic from original frame > try to paste it into the anchored frame
copy old frames incl. graphic into new document, then trying to drag the graphic into the new frame
looked for a way to change regular frames to anchored frames on some kind of menu, didn't find it.
Do I really have to reimport, scale, and position each graphic individually?
Hoping that someone has a good idea what to do!
    THANKS!

    Hi Eugene,
Did as you suggested and made a small change to my already-existing object style (turned off the frame fitting options) and it now works like a charm!
    Thanks a million

  • Frame to No Frame

Most of our app is no frame. For one viewbean
we have two frames (2 view bean associated with
    each of these frames).
If I put the handle request in the second viewbean frame,
it refreshes the second frame and post my data back

The behavior I want is to get out of these two frames and

Can someone point out how this can be done.. ?
    Thanks

The target attribute is per-form and per-HREF. If you are using HREFs, you
shouldn't have a problem as each one can have a seperate target. If you are
using buttons, then you have to work around the fact that each form, and
hence all its contained buttons, can only have one target attribute. You
should very easily be able to change this attribute using JavaScript (I
don't have a code snippet), but the easier approach would be to just use
HREFs where submission of data isn't required.

    Thanks Todd..
Can this target attribute be set dynamically through
java code/javascript when a post happens.
Basic issue I am having is that for few clicks like
next, next it has to post to the second frame
and when the user clicks finish then I have to go to
    no frame version.
So I cannot set target=_top in the second frame.
    Thanks

You have to set the target in the frame's form tag and/or HREF tags to
target="_top", just like you would do if these frames were static HTML
(non-S1AF). Remember, the server has no involvement in how arendered HTML
page will be shown. That's up to the browser, and the only way toinfluence
the browser is to set the "target" attribute as needed on your page.

I have created a menu called " Test window " and it contains toplevel menu item "File" and File Menu contains subitems "Product Evaluation", "ProcessEvaluation", "ResourceEvalation", "TotalEvaluation" and "Exit".
When i click File->Product Evaluation it displays a new Frame named frame1 , similarly if i click ProcessEvaluation , ResourceEvalation , TotalEvalation it displays frame 2 , frame 3 and frame 4 Respectively,
