Capturing Old Hi8 footage using Sony TRV310 DIgital 8 Camera Using Firewire

I have read many of the previous posts regarding capture of old Hi8 footage. I recently purchased a MacPro and am in the process of converting my video and photography work over to it from a PC. I have both a MiniDV and the above mention Digital8. There is no problem capturing new footage shot with the Digital8 since it is recorded in digital format. However, I have years of old Hi8 tape. I get the "VTR OK" message, and can use the on screen control to advance and view the tapes. However, when I try to capture them into FCP 6.0, I get a message that it is waiting for a time code. Is there a setting that I need to change to get around this?

Thank you all for your prompt responses. You were on the money.
I used the "uncontrollable device" setting with "Capture Now". This allowed me to used the camcorder's on board controls to advance the video for capture. When you use the "uncontrollable device setting, you no longer get the "VTR OK" status message. You get a "No communications" status message.
The capture of the hour long Hi8 tape went fine with no dropped frames that I can tell. However, at the end of the capture, I got a message that the "Audio Sample rate for the file was different than the Audio sample rate of the source tape. And, that the audio and video might be out of sync". Sure enough, the audio is slightly out of sync with the video. I'll have to look back in my old camera manuals to see if I can find what the audio sample rate for Hi8 is and make that adjustment.
Again thanks.

  • No video when trying to capture PAL dv tape w/Sony HVR-V1U camera

    Hello there,
Im attempting to Log & Capture a DV tape with "DV SP PAL" content from a Sony HVR-V1U camera using an iLink FireWire.
I have deck control, timecode, and audio but no video. Instead I see bars for video w/the ominous "preview disabled" band. When I attempt "Capture Now," I receive the follwoing message "this operation could not be completed as there is no video." For Easy Setup, Im currently in "Format: PAL; Use: DV-PAL FireWire Basic" (ive other combinations, and again best I can get is deck control but no video).
The DV PAL tape plays fine in the camera's LCD screen. Also I had no issue capturing HDV NTSC tapes using the same Sony HVR-V1U camera.
I've checked my settings and the usual obvious stuff but no luck.
If anyone has any ideas on what Im doing wrong or things I could try it would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks,
    Sam

are you sure this camera is fully pal compatible?  Some cameras/decks will play back certain formats but will not output via firewire.  Can you shoot PAL with this camera?  If not, I'd guess you can't use it to capture PAL via firewire.  Might check the camera manual.

How to connect to Digital Camera using JMF?
    Any example?
    thx

If the DC has a mode that works like a web cam, and can generate either a VFW or DirecShow stream, then you could capture a frame of the stream, yes.

  • Sony H50 digital camera battery availability

I bought Sony H50 digital camera, it has lithium battery, my friend says that AA type rechargeable batteries are better than lithium type batteries since these are economical, moreover, lithium type battery for a particular model may be discontinued by the manufecturer any time so the camera may be out of use due to unavailability of battery for a modell.
    I am confused, please help

AA rechargeables are better than the AA nonrechargeable lithium batteries.
They are NOT better than Lithium-Ion rechargeable cells like your camera uses.  Li-Ion cells have the highest energy density per unit of weight of any battery type (except maybe Li-Po).
I've never had problems with battery availability for any camera.  Cameras tend to be not too harsh on their batteries, and most likely by the time Sony ever actually discontinued the battery for that camera, you'd be wanting to purchase a new camera.
As an example, I got my PowerShot S100 (the first Canon Digital Elph camera) around 2000-2001.  Canon still manufactures NB-1LH batteries for this unit.

  • Cant find the pictures I imported from my digital camera using iphoto

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro and imported part of some photos from my digital camera using Iphoto. When it prompted me whether the photos should be deleted from the camera, I chose 'yes'. It deleted the pictures from the camera, but I cant find them anywhere on iphotos. I have tried searching for the pics on my mac using the 'finder', but had no luck.
I repeated the same thing.. took some more pictures and tried to import part of them and then delete the same pics from the camera. Iphotos did the same thing..
I usually import all (and not part) of the pictures from my camera and then use the same option to delete the pictures from the camera after importing them to iphotos. This has always worked.
    Please help. Thanks,
    Kanchan

In the Event mode make sure the sort order is By Date ➙ Descending.  That will put the newer Events at the top of the window.  Check there to see if they are there or not.
The safest method to get photos from a camera to the library is to upload them to a folder on the Desktop first.  That makes sure they are safely on the hard drive.  From there you can import the folder into the library and when you've confirmed they are in the library you can delete the folder from the Desktop and have the camera reformat the memory card.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • I have just bought Macbookpro and when ı connect digital camera from firewire port ı never see the image at macbook pro.

I have just bought the macbook pro. When i connect the digital camera (sony dxc-c33p) to mac from firewire port i never see this camera imovie or quick time programs. Macbook pro never connect the digital cameras via firewire port. What can i do to solve this problem?

    We are sony dealer for profesional medical products and i want to connect sony dxc-c33 digital camera to mac via firewire port. it is very interesting;
    1. i have new imac at the office with latest software. when i have connected the camera it worked perfect no problem.
    2. i have bought new macbook pro last week. when i connected the camera it didn't work.
    3. i have connected the camera to imac mini with latest software. it worked perfect no problem.
    4. finally i went to apple support office and we connected the camera and tried to take movie at four different brand new macbook pro but they didn't work.
Also when we lived this problem we have already contacted with sony support and no problem from this side. Iam still thinking the problem is firewire port at macbook pro. Finally we contacted exclusive dealer of apple in my country but they didn't solve and understand the problem yet until today (it passed 15 days)

  • Is Aperture Useful with unsupported digital cameras like FujiFilm S100FS?

I have been evaluating and comparing Apple Aperture with Adobe Lightroom. For me, Aperture would be my preference if my camera was supported. Note that I already am using Photoshop CS5, but could use the supplemental organizing capabilityies of Aperture.
Apple does not support my camera's raw format (Fujifilm Finepix S100FS). To make matters worse, it does no good to convert the raw files to the standard DNG format because Apple does not even support that format for this camera. Apple states that some cameras are not supported in DNG because they have different types of sensor. And one of the reasons I purchased the Fujifilm camera is that it sports a larger sensor (to capture more light).
Aperture does support TIFF files, however. So I considered the idea of converting files to TIFF before importing them into Aperture. An interesting aspect of this is that TIFF files tend to be very very large.
For example, compare the following file sizes (for the same photo):
Camera Raw direct from the camera (16 bits per pixel): 23.7 MB
Converted to very high quality JPEG (8 bits): 7.9 MB
Converted to TIFF using Finepix software (16 bits) 133.3 MB
Converted to TIFF with Esif using Finepix S/W (8 bits) 66.7 MB
Converted to TIFF using Adobe Photoshop (8 bits) 33.2 MB
Converted to CNG using Adobe DNG Converter (16 bits) 31.9 MB
It appears that the best route may be to use the Photoshop conversion to TIFF. But I would be concerned that the reduction from 16 to 8 bits may limit my ability to do extensive editing without ending up with high pixelizing results. One can see that working with the camera raw image would provide greater flexibility and use less disk space - if only it was supported.
I like the features of Apple Aperture. But, I am not willing to pay the price associated with the lack of camera support. I think that Aperture would be an asset to me if it was not for this great shortcoming. I am not currently interested in Lightroom 2 since it is a couple of years old and does not support sound and movie files to the same extent as Aperture. I may be able to use the sound organizational capabilities of Aperture since music is also one of my hobbies.
Has anyone else run into this type of problem? Is there something that I am missing? Is Aperture at all useful for a person with a camera that is not supported by Apple?

I guess the answer is digital is new and there is a lot of fighting for the Top Spot.
The way i figured things out was like this.
Best tool to do the job is what i wanted. What works for me, because i don't want to work for a computer or a camera. (but i have to) When i started looking i found Apple were the ones who seemed to make something that came nearest to working for me and not the other way round.
Of course Aperture is still very useful as it is a mega powerful Organisation tool.
If i were in your position now i would think new camera. Aperture will still be around long after your camera and hopefully getting better along the way. The camera won't, thats for sure.
A possible short, half term solution if Apple intend to support it in the near future. Would be import pairs then discard the jpegs when raw is supported.
Sorry probably not the answer you wanted.

  • Using high quailty digital camera video?

    Hi everyone.
I just got a new digital camera, the Casio EX-S500 and it is a really great camera. The one thing that I am amazed at is how great the video is! I can't tell the difference between a a video camera's footage and my digital cameras footage. When I first got the camera, I had to download a little plug-in thing for Quicktime so that it would play the movie files. I did that... no problems. But when I import the videos into Final Cut Express HD, (the video files are AVI by the way), it will play fine in the Viewer, but when I put it on my timeline, it plays in the canvas the way it did before I got the plug in (A mostly black screen. You can't really make out anything thats happening in the video.) Any suggestions of how I will be able to edit with this?
    Thanks a lot.
    -Dean

The box of the camera does say that it uses MPEG-4 video, but look at the get info screenshot of one of the files: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y88/bballerdean/avi.jpg
I understand the whole process of getting MPEG video into Final Cut Express. I have MPEG Streamclip and use it all the time. The problem isn't the audio. It's the image. The audio is fine. Final Cut Express does not use the plug-in that I downloaded for Quicktime.
    Here's what I'm talking about.

  • Best Nikon/Sony/Canon Digital Camera with Movie Mode

I'm a senior in high school and I'm interested in film and photography; I lik to record EVERYTHING and take a LOTS of pictures. So I'd like a camera that performs fairly well using both picture and video mode.
And because I'm a senior my budget is about $400. So any tips or suggestions would help a lot.
    Thanks so much,
    Jasmine

    Hi jasmine,
I have to start by saying that for $400 you are restricted to point-and-shoot cameras, and although you should be able to get a very nice point-and-shoot camera for still photography in this price range the video capability of the camera will be limited.
I would suggest getting point-and-shoot camera for your still images, and a camcorder for your videos. You should be able to get both for around $400. I would say budget $200 for the still camera, and $200 for a camcorder. To see the digital cameras we sell for $200 or less you could look here, and to see the camcorders we sell for $200 or less you could look here.
    I hope this helps!

  • I have an older imac with os10.4.11. Will it transfer images from newer digital camera using my iphoto when on the camera box it specifies a mac os of 10.5 or above?mo

I have an older imac with OSX 10.4.11. Will it transfer images  from newer digital cameras on to my computer via my iphoto program when the camera box states that the required mac OS is 10.5 or above or is that only if you wish to load the camera manufacturers own image processing program?

Which camera are you speaking about?
Why are you on such an old version on OS X?
With the information provided, I am inclined to say, no.

  • Uploading photo's from a Digital Camera using a 8830

So, being a government employee, I am not allowed to have a phone with a camera.  I do take my camera with me while I'm out and about and would like to upload the photos to Facebook or Flicker.  There has to be someone out there who is smarter than me that has figured out a way to do it.  I was thinking that connecting the camera to my 8830 with a USB cable would be the easiest solution but I don't know if the BB would know that I did it, and what software app I would use.  I know that I could use a micro SD in the camera and then transfer it to the BB, but that seems a little bothersome.  Anyone out there have a solution or I'm I just another person that is hobbled by the interface between his work environment and his personal environment?

You're going to need to go the bothersome route... There's no way for the BlackBery to read the digital camera from the USB interface.
Either insert the camera's MicroSD card in the BlackBerry, or first transfer the pictures from the camera to the PC and then to your BlackBerry (which you could simply transfer the images to Flickr from the PC, at that point, and removing the BlackBerry from the process entirely).

  • Cisco SX80 - Using Sony SRG-300HW cameras

    Hello,
I have a client that's ordered a Cisco SX80 with a Precision 60 Cam and they wish to add two Sony SRG-300HW cameras to the system for a total of three cameras. The reason for the different cameras is they have to be ceiling mounted and able to point directly down to a operating table.
My question is - can the SX80 control via serial / visca the three cameras?
From what I have seen the stock camera that comes with the Cisco SX80 does not have a serial pass through and there's little information available to confirm this. In turn why I am asking about this here to see if anyone has had any experience with alternative cameras with the Cisco SX80 and various configuration ideas.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Craig

    Hi!
    >>>See the SX80 Physical Interface Guide.
Thank you. SX80 has serial connection and 4x camera will work but it is not clear if it supports daisy chaining or not. There is nothing about VISCA daisy chaining. So it is unclear if one can connect 3 cams in such config:
    codec -> PHD 4x -> PHD 12X ->PHD 12x.
I hope someone from Cisco helps?
