Capturing OnLocation to a SAN drive

Is anyone capturing through OnLocation to a network drive under a SAN?
I'm talking SAN, Storage Area Networking like Fibre or iSCSI, and not NAS, Network Attached Storage like some cheap ethernet box.
Why do I ask this? I recon that this may be the best forum to launch into some network storage issues when recording in a studio or at an event.

Any luck on this subject. I want to use a raid server to capture approx 20+ hrs of video for a dance competition with the ability to use the server to copy files and produce DVD's on site for my customers. Others in the industry use OnLocation but do not produce on site.
Thanks

  • Using final cut on a network SAN drive

We have Final Cut Pro X installed an new iMacs at the college I work at. We installed Final Cut Pro X 10.0.1 under Mac 10.7.1 and added a network SAN drive to store Media files and it worked perfectly. We then upgraded to 10.7.2 because of network problems we were having with the Macs and now whenever you go to add a SAN drive, all the folders on the network drives are greyed out.
We run the Macs using AdmitMac to connect to the network, it's not a permissions problem as the Macs can read and write to the drives via the finder and we definately do have a SAN in our building to store edited videos.
This is causing us a headache because of security the Macs cannot write to the local drives of the machines and only to the network. It's a real pain because we cannot use Final Cut Pro X at all at the moment. Anyone got any ideas?
We have tried with machines without admitmac and it doesn't work. The only thing we can think of is because of the new security implemented in 10.7.2 for network drives, that might have something to do with it. Like I say the major variable between it working and not working is the Mac OS X update.
Can any help with a workaround that doesn't involve creating a DMG on the network? Please help!

FCP 5.0 is the PowerPC version. That and lower. FCP 5.1 is the Universal version.
Where are you storing your media? Your captured footage?

  • Essbase on San Drive

We have installed Essbase in SAN drive. It was working fine for past 2 years recently we have noticed some abnormal behaviour on the calc performance. The same calc takes 2 hrs in the morning but if we run at around 6 pm takes 4 - 5 hrs. I(there is no backup process running at 6 pm).
Any suggestion what needs to be check to find the issue?

    Hi,
As SAN setup is a common storage setup for all the applications/systems of an enterprise. It might have some maintance issues ..which might impact our essbase environment.
But, I personally would prefer to have the installation of an application ( like essbase on the local drive of the server ) and distribute its storage across the SAN drives( as my storage requirement for essbase might be huge, and might beed in TB's ,which is possible only through SAN).
Its more important for an applications performance that SAN is configured optimally for performance. There are few parameters at SAN end like
    1. Raid configuration( EX if its Raid 1 0 , though its more expensive , its faster ).
    2. How the LUNS and LUSE 's have been assigned
    3. Count of spindles ....etc
This is what I can add, hope its useful

  • What to set when capturing to an external firewire drive?

When capturing to an external firewire drive that will also be used to edit the video, what do I need to set in the Scratch Disk window? Just the scratch disk? Do I need to also set the waveform cache? thumbnail cache? autosave vault?
    Thanks.

Depends on your overall configuration/workflow...but I'll usually set my external for Video Capture/Video Render/Audio Render. Then both cache files to my system drive and my Autosave Vault to the external...unless I have an additional internal or second external. I keep my Project files on the system/startup drive.
When you click on the 'Set' button, it's best to simply select the root of whatever drive you want to use. This alleviates the possibility of uncontrolled heirarchy of 'scratch folders' cluttering up your system. If you select the root, then FCP creates a "Capture Scratch" folder at the root level, and each new project gets it's own folder within the main "Capture Scratch" folder.
Setting your autosave vault somewhere other than where your project file is located, can save your butt, if your system drive (or wherever your project file is located) decides to crash.
Others may do it differently, as I do on occasion...just depends on what drives/Mac I have available at the time.
    Hope that helps.

  • Capturing to a FireWire 800 drive

Hi, first off, a little on the devices...
    Computer:
    Powerbook G4
    Mac OS 10.4.5
    1 GB RAM
    80 GB HDD
    Final Cut Studio 5.0.4
    Camera:
Canon GL2 DV camera connected through FireWire 400 directly to the computer (not daisy chained through a FW800 device)
    Hard Drive:
Lacie Big Disk Extreme connected through FireWire 800 directly to the computer
    The issue:
When I set my external as the capture scratch in Final Cut Pro and try to capture, I keep getting dropped frames. In the past, I can capture to my Powerbook's internal hard drive from the same camera, and I've been able to capture to external FireWire 400 drives on my G4 Tower, so I know it's not an interface speed problem.
From what I hear, hooking up two devices through the same bus (not interface or port, but bus) will lower the bus speed to the lowest common demoninator, and that DV cameras operate at 200 Mbps, half the speed of FW400 drives. Looking at System Profiler, all Firewire elements are lumped under one "FireWire Bus", making me think that a single bus controls both the FW800 and FW400 interfaces. It's a triple interface drive, so so far I've been relegated to capturing to the drive through it's USB2 interface while the camera occupies the FW bus. I find it a mite bit hilarious that USB is the only interface on my system fast enough to capture to without dropped frames. So have a multi-part question here, any answers to any parts would be wonderful.
    a) Did I get my definition of a bus right?
    b) Is it true that the Powerbook only has a single bus controlling all FireWire interfaces?
    c) Is that a standard thing? Or does a Powermac G5 have independent busses?
    d) Is it really true that connecting a 200 Mbps DV camera to the computer will slow down even FW800 to 200Mbps?
    e) Is there any way I can use Firewire 800 to capture or am I relegated to USB for the rest of my capturing life?
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

"USB 2.0 has higher burst rates than Firewire, but it doesnt have what's called Isochronous Transactions. Isochronous Transactions are a reserved bandwidth data transmission mechanism. They provide a guaranteed rate of delivery with a guaranteed latency. This is necessary in a video stream environment. No one here has ever reported success with a USB drive."
    and:
Now although USB 2.0 seems to be a lot faster than Firewire (480 megabits per second vs 400 megabits per second), it is only burst speed; the rate at which data can be transferred for a short period of time. Burst speed are generally higher than sustained speeds. Firewire on the other has transfer rates at sustained speed; the rate at which data can be transferred continuously. This is due to the difference in the chip design. This is also why Firewire is preferred when it comes to high speed peripherals like camcorders, digital cameras or hard disks.
Don't have the original sources from which these were extracted, but better to be safe than sorry.
    Video capture: Fiirewire-yes, USB-no.

  • MBP Hardrive capture requirements w/ FW800 External Drive?

    Hi All,
Im wondering about the hardrive requirements on a 15" Macbook Pro for CS5 Premier Pro. The stated minimum hardrive speed for sd capture is a 7200 rpm HD however my MBP's internal only runs at 5400 rpm. While swapping out the internal HD is not an option, I have a 1tb firewire 800 external drive. Firstly, if I only capture on to this external drive will the entire editing process run smoothly enough?  Is this solution simply a patch or an appropriate resolution?  Furthermore, will I need to have all of my files kept on the external at all times or can I bring them on to my slower internal and work mobiley. Any other comments on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Both of your disks will be pretty slow, so don't complain if there is some jerkiness. For capturing you should be OK, but it is editing that may cause problems, depending on your workflow. Capturing usually implies DV or HDV and for thast you look to be OK.
If you want to edit AVCHD or other complex codecs, this may be considered a sub-par machine and that is your choice. Good luck with it.

  • Recover point - SAN Drive Replication DR Test

Just want to share our DR Test exercise which i am involved in, SAs are trying to replicate SAN Drive/Server on 2 places, server has the same name & IP with recover point.
That was my understanding about recover point.
we should be seeing the duplicate on another set of disks on another server, within DCX ( the server can be called the same, but diff IP for that server.( but i say same server name & IP on both ends)
Any body can help me clear my concepts about this?
That was the steps SAs/SAN engineers done
    DNS was activated
    domain controller was activated
tulppsh05 was successfully built from makesysb
tulpcorbadb02 was successfully built from makesysb
    wmstutps01 was restored from symantec
    citrixbox (name?) was built
Replication issue with SAN drives was resolved

    My answers:
    1. The restore command can restore datafiles belonging to tablespaces or control files or spfile and will do this at the right OS locations but it cannot restore online redo logs because RMAN does not back online redo logs.
    2. If you are testing disaster recovery, you should test loosing all database files on disk (control files and datafiles and redo logs and spfile): it means that you can only do incomplete recovery since transactions committed in redo logs are not in your archived redo logs backups. So, yes this is point in time recovery.

  • Capturing DV tapes to large drive

I have over 100 DV tapes that have never been archived or logged in any way. I have two 1TB drives and would like to capture each of the tapes separately in such a way that in the future I can use FCP 6 (on an Intel Mac pro) to edit these tapes. I will be using my camera as the video input device and would like to put a tape in and "walk away" while FCP captures the tape in real time. My thought is that once a tape is captured the digital computer file is much quicker to navigate than using the camera as a video playback unit. I realize that 2TB will only go so far. I would like each tape to have a corresponding computer file.
My question is what is the best way to capture these tapes so each tape has a corresponding file that will be usable by FCP when the time comes to edit them into different projects? Is it as simple as doing a "log and capture" for each tape giving each a unique reel number?

Well, I'm obviously in over my head, but I unfortunately find myself with quite a bit of time in the next couple of months to try and pull this off.
As mentioned above I would like to capture many DV tapes. At this point I do not want to do any editing. I want to capture them in a way that does not limit me in the future when I try to create and edit numerous projects. I have a large dedicated drive. What is the best way to accomplish this:
What should the folder structure look like at the "Finder" level?
Should each tape be a separate project?
I do not know what is on these tapes and I would like not to preview them before they are captured. Is it possible to change the "Name" or add a description after the tape is captured (since during the capture process I will have a better idea what is on it)?
What is the best way to capture these tapes allowing for the greatest flexibility in the future. I'd like to avoid spending two months doing it the wrong way.
Thanks for the "leading zeros tip"
Thank you all for your help.

  • Capturing to second external hard drive..

I have recently been watching some tutorials on www.lynda.com and I was told that I should really capture all my footage to a secondary HD. I have an iMac with one 800 firewire port. I was told to get a firewire drive but having this connected will leave me nowhere to plug my cameras firewire cable in to for capturing. Am I OK just buying a cable splitter for the back of my Mac or do I connect the camera to the secondary HD? I'm thinking the second option wouldn't work so just wanted to ask the question before I go buying.
    Many thanks
    Gav

    G'Day Gav,
    The tuts are correct.
One additional thing not mentioned is the drive format.
Most drive comes pre-formatted to suit PC machines which will cause greif on your Mac sooner or later. Check that the drive is formatted to Mac OS Extended before any capture begins.
It's as easy as connecting the drive (firewire) to your Mac and opening Applications>Utilities>Disc Utility.
Click the external's icon then select the ERASE tab. You can select MacOSExtended or Journaled, either is OK. I prefer no Journaling.
Give it a jazzy NAME in the Name field.
There is *Security Options*; this is for selecting how thoroughly old data is removed. I prefer Zero Out Data. Hit OK on your choice.
Click the ERASE button then ERASE and wait. Don't worry if it takes an hour or two or more depending on which Security Option was selected and how large the drive.
After a coffee or two you are good to go.

  • Capturing Video Direct to hard drive with FCS

I am using a Canon HX A1 and I am wondering if there is any way of capturing video directly to a hard drive while shooting without using Adobe On Location. Does FC have any functionality in this area or is there any other MAC friendly apps that do this?

You can capture a live feed with FCE, FCP, QT Pro and several other applications. Connect your camera via Firewire, in FCP, set Device Control to ":Non-Controllable Device" and use Capture Now.
NOTE: whenever using a Canon device for capturing of any type, it would be best to make sure that the Canon device is on it's own Firewire bus. You can achieve this by adding a Firewire card (thereby creating a new FW bus) or by capturing only to an internal hard drive.

    2. How can I see the device prior to formatting and mouting it?
After labled, you need to create the new file systems with user : newfs /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0sX
    cerate mount point: mkdir /test
    mount /dev/dsk/c1t2d0sX /test
    3. From the FORMAT command how do I know which is my new device as the server already has plenty SAN disks assigned?
    A): hostname#echo | format :

  • Trouble capturing with new external hard drive

OK, I finally bought the correct-- at least I think it's the correct--- external hard drive (160 GB lacie). However, when I use "capture now" I get an "allocating disk space" message. This message usually stays up for a very long time with the spinning pin wheel, which results in only a small fraction of my video being captured.... if any at all.
I'm assuming this has something to do with the addition of the external hard drive... any suggestions?

    Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities>Disc utility.
Click the Information Tab if it's not already open.
Click on the Disc you wish to check (Lacie). this will tell you the FORMAT, is it HFS+? That's the same as Mac OS Extended, the one you want.
If it's not click the Erase Tab and re-set it.

  • Capture Clips and Mac Book Drive

My first question is... I need to free up gig space on the Mac so that I can run Pro Tools (not simultaneously with Final Cut Express HD of course). When making movies on Final Cut Express HD, I notice that each time I capture a clip it is not only being saved in my external Seagate drive (as I instruct it) but apparently it is also being backed up in the Mac and there is over 100 gigs of 160 that is hidden somewhere that apparently is just extra space being used. How can I delete that and make sure that the all of the capture clips are on the external hard drive? Thank you. I am sure it is a simple answer. (I am not exactly sure of the operating system I don't have access to all of the paperwork at the moment- I bought the Mac and Final Cut in February 2007).
    Dan

FCP doesn't ever put clips twice on the computer don't think... something else is causing your buildup of files.
You can see where each clip is stored in FCP though... right click on any column header in the Browser and select "Show Source" as a new column to be added. It will show you where the media is on your system that the clip is referencing... bet it's only on that external...

    What camera produced it?
