Capturing Photos onto Final Cut Express

Where my Emac is not connected to the Internet, how do I capture photos to put into a Final Cut Express project?

You import photos into FCE, not capture them. (File > Import)
It's not necessary for your Mac (eMac or otherwise) to be connected to the internet unless you are trying to download photos from a website. Is that what you want to do?

  • Trouble capturing footage to final cut express

    hey this is quite urgent....
i am trying to upload footage to final cut express from my sony DCR-HC52E. it sais VTR OK and plays and pauses and stuff but i cannot see anything it just stayed on those coloured bars.
i can see it playing on the camera though...
i got it working once with this camera, just cant remember how
any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi
My table for this was once for iMovie - BUT it's more General than that so You might find help here.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odwenGB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Capturing video on final cut express

I have connected my sony camera to my macbook computer and opened up final cut express
HD. It shows that my camera is indeed connected. I go up to file and click capture and the capture window opens. I click on capture now and my camera starts up and a black screen appears but nothing happens. When I hit escape, I return to the capture window and my movie is playing in the display window but nothing is being captured. What am i doing wrong?

Well one of the first things you're doing wrong is posting your FCE question in the FCP forum
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936
I don't use FCE, so I'm not sure how its operation differs from FCP in this regard, but my guess is that you have not switched your camera to VTR mode and so what you may be seeing in the capture window is the back of the lens cap.

  • Capturing HD in final cut express

    A few capture questions:
    1. Is there a way to capture HD material in final cut express?
    2. If I'm sending HD material through a digital converter, and then to the computer, will that digital computer all the file to be transfered in HD?
    thank you.

From what version up can final cut express capture HD?
question 2: I'm running material from a BetaHD deck, but it doesnt have a fire wire connection, so i'm connecting video and audio cables to a digital converter which is connected to the computer via fire-wire. Does the HD signal maintain over this transfer?

  • Capturing analog into Final Cut Express HD

I'm new to Apple. I transferred analog video onto DVD and tried to download it into my MacPro using both Imovie and Final Cut Express HD to edit. I can do this easily on my Dell but can't on my Apple with either program. Any answers?

Buy an A-D Converter for $200 or more. If your camcorder has AV IN you can use that.
Otherwise download Streamclip free and use that to convert to DV:-

  • Importing Video Files from DVD and the net onto final cut express 4

    2 questions:
1st: Ive imported a video file downloaded from the net to practice editing, but once I have done that, the video file has no audio? how do I get the audio for those files?
2nd: I had ripped some video files from my university film project onto my laptop, but I cant Import the files into final cut express to further edit it (because it was a group project), because its the wrong format and stuff. How do I fix this and allow it to be imported?
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Cheers

ohk cool, wat about my first problem with the sound not being imported?
Most likely the file is multiplexed. That means the audio and video are rolled into one. Same thing applies as the other post, the file needs to be in a format that FCE recognizes. Streamclip may do it, depending on the type of file of course.

  • Capturing HDV onto Final Cut using an IMAC

I just purchased an IMAC with 1 gig of memory and I installed Final Cut Pro 5. Capturing video is very slow, especially when acquistion is complete because processing is so very, very slow. Any way to speed up processing?
    Thanks.
imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Capturing FCP

    Yes.
Anything below FCP 5.1 will run under the PowerPC emulation, Rosetta, on an Intel iMac - I'm amazed it works at all, never mind slowly.
You need to send your CD's off for a 'crossgrade' to the Universal Binary version of Final Cut (5.1), go here for options and order forms:
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
If you already had Final Cut Studio, the fee is $50, if you had just one of the Studio products the fee is more (e.g. only Final Cut Pro, $99), but you get the whole studio package for not a lot of money.
The 5.1 universal binary version will also work on your PowerPC mac, and your new Intel mac - at blazing speed.
I sent mine off a week ago - still not had it back (being in Canada may make a difference) so you may need to go back to your old machine to get work done in the mean time.

  • Capturing HD into Final Cut Express HD

I think i posted a topic about this some time back, but i thought i would again. i have this JVC HD camera, and i would like to import the video into FCEHD. but i was having a lot of trouble with it. i spoke to a JVC sales rep awhile back, and he said there was something i needed to download in order to do it. i called him yesterday, and he hasn't returned my phone call yet. i just thought i'd post a topic on here to see if anybody knew what he was talking about. if anyone could let me know what exactly i need to do in order to import this video, i'd really appreciate it.
    hey, thanks.

After my previous post to your thread, my computer quit working properly and I deleted and reinstalled both QT 7.0.3 and FCE-HD. I now am able to capture HD footage with the camera set to HD (on lens barrell) and mpeg2 set on the firewire output switch. FCE easy setup is apple intermediate 1080i/60. I have to unplug then replug the firewire cable on the camera and rolling tape before going to capture. I can also capture SD video with all the exact same settings, but am not sure exactly what form it's going onto the computer in! DV video is via ntsc-dv codec and camera set to dv/dv.
    Best regards, Manson

  • Importing Photos into Final Cut Express 4

Please help me, this problem is making me feel like an idiot, I am trying to import digital photographs into FCE but every time I drag it into the timeline its's pixelated and not clear, How do I import the photo so it's not pixelated?

when you have imported the pictures do you Pan,Zoom or adjust the image in anyway? most cameras are not set up for 1920x1080 they are 4000x3000 pixels depending on your camera and you usually have black lines either side where it fits in the video window.
check your setting for the video if it is 1920x1080 then you will will have some background colour to the image where it doesnt fit properly on screen. also check what size image you have taken, some camera boast that they are 15megapixels but the real quality is subsequently less.

  • Photos in Final Cut Express

I have read all the posts on getting photos to look sharper in FCE.
I have tried saving my pictures according to the recommended DV image setting in Photoshop.
I have imported them and still my pictures lose resolution when they are played in FCE.
    I am still quite confused.
    I am using FCE 1.01.
Should I upgrade to 3.5? Will that make a difference?
Am I being too ambitious to think that I can have sharp photo in FCE?
I have been at this for a non-stop 24 hours so far. Any assistance will be fully appreciated.
My system is a G5 with 2GB ram with OS 10.4.7
    Thanks

    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

Your high resolution 8 megapixel image will not have the same resolution in FCE when it's reduced to 720x480 and compressed into the DV codec. It's just not possible. The best you can do is prepare the image in Photoshop to the size and resolution that conforms to DV, do the scaling and adjusting in the image editing application if you can rather than inside FCE. You also have to look at the image on a video monitor. Once it's in and FCE timeline it's been processed and compressed for display on an interlaced video monitor. That's the only place you can judge it accurately.

  • Canon AVCHD to final cut express on macbook. Help.

I just bought a CANON Vixia HE R20 AVCHD camera. I used log and transfer to get the clip onto final cut express 4. But when I add the selection to the queue, an icon comes up under status that says: error: no data. What do I do??

The files have not been converted, they were taken straight off the camera.
And I'm not really sure what you mean by media specifications, because I don't know much about the camera I'm using.
    No, I only have 4.0

  • Rendering a jpeg image in Final Cut Express

I have a jpeg image which shows up correctly in the captured bin of Final Cut Express once it is imported, but it will not render properly. The background is black in the viewer, and the image(jpeg) in the center of the screen is a bright green square.
Im able to add motion to the image, but it does not show up in the viewer as the image, it is only a green square.
Can this be fixed in FCE?
The original file is from an email, probably from a pc, does this cause compatibitity issues?

If you have access to an image editing tool such as photoshop, I would advice you import the image into Phototshop and save it in a different format e.g, GIF format and re-import it into Final Cut Express HD. This could solve your rendering problem if all you need is to use a Still image.

  • No audio and flicker on Canvas : Final Cut Express

I imported some footage onto Final cut Express and once it was imported the audio and video were fine. Then five minute later the audio this appears, sometimes I press play on the viewer and the audio will play for a split second and disappear. The audio on my MacBook seems to be operating fine on every other program I use. I really need help on this. No audio is working. I een imported a regular song to see if taht would play and it would but with no sound. The sound lever's seem to be bouncing up and down, which signifies that there is sound but it's not hearable.
The other problem that I am having is that my Canvas seems to flicker bright and dark (normal contrast) when I playback the sequence on the canvas. This as never happened before.
    thanks for reading!

What is FCE's audio output set to? Look in View > Audio Playback.
What video format did you import and does the Easy Setup reflect this?
    What are your Sequence Settings?

  • Sony DCR-TRV140 w/Final Cut Express 4 - Capture format question

A big thanks to the forum for patience and direction. You all have helped me get an older digital camcorder hooked up to the Mac to date.
I'm now able to capture video from the camcorder to FinalCut Express.
    So, on to today's question...
I have a Sony Digital Handycam DCR-TRV140. I know that it's NTSC (mainly because it says so right on the side of the camcorder). But I don't know what capture settings to use in Final Cut Express to get the best quality video onto the Mac, and ultimately onto DVD's or digital files I publish to my family over the net.
So when I go to the menu path Final Cut Express -> Easy Setup, I have a number of options to choose from... I (think) that I know that the best format option to choose from the dropdown is NTSC... But I don't know what to choose from the drop down list.
Here's a picture of the drop down list:
    https://wu20hg.blu.livefilestore.com/y1pNUoJrOOSdf-4NJq3OjEIyrt38TEU64-Pid2LRNbw kG9grywxFV1qA2NshK8uSxl6eiTlYiq4uNbG86CJRUantQ/FinalCutExpressTim1.tiff
Specifications for the Sony camcorder can be found here:
    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=11027762
    or here
    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DCRTRV140-Digital8-Camcorder-Streaming/dp/B0000634T4/ ref=cmcr_pr_producttop
Can you help me decide what is the best option to choose? If it depends, maybe you could explain what it depends on...?
    Many thanks!
    Tim

The differences among the Easy Setups have to do with audio sample rate, device control, and widescreen shooting.
The Anamorphic setups are for widescreen. If your camera doesn't shoot widescreen (16:9), you can ignore them.
DV media is generally recorded with audio at 48kHz or 32kHz. Choose according to the audio recorded by your camera (some offer different record options). If you capture with the wrong audio selected in your FCE Easy Seutp, you'll get a warning message at the end of the capture.
What FCE Setup are you using at present? I'm guessing it's either DV-NTSC Firewire Basic or DV-NTSC DV Converter. If that's working for you, stick with it.

  • Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

Fritz from Technical support told me about a glitch in Final Cut Pro & Express HD that happens when you upgrade to Quicktime 7. He told me to go to this article: Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301852
and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian
