Capturing real time movies - HDV

Hello,
When I try to capture HDV in real time with QT 7.2 using Canon HV20 I can't get any pictures. I can record but the final movie will be an empty white screen.
QT recognizes the Canon HV20 but will not record HDV format movies.
Is there anything I'm doing rong with QT?
Thank you.
There is no problem capturing real time SD movies.

I doubt the mac has the power to do real time encoding of HDV like you want - even iMovie uses a time delayed import with a conversion to Apple Intermediate Codec to keep up with capturing. Real time seems terribly unlikely.

  • CS4 capturing real time with Panasonic HDC TM20

I am very disappointed that after all this time the the supported video camera list is still very small. What good is an editor if you are limited on what camera you can use. Regardless of being able to access the media off the memory card I wish to use the device directly as well. This inconenience tells me not to buy adobe next time. This is stated to nix any comments to use files instead.
When I first bought CS 4 I was told this list would be updated and increased in time, obviously this was incorrect. Is there any setting that will allow me to access my camera directly?
    Thank You.

It is great and wonderful that most editors take firewire. Now, how many computers up until the time of my first post came with firewire? Not many. I just bought a mac last fall, that did not come with firewire. So, that statement does not take in the reality of what most people have.
More importantly, it was advertised that CS4 "will take your video" right off the camera. The point being here is convenience. Ann, may have given the best answer yet, that it is faster off the memory card rather then the hook up to the camera. I am used to it now.
Again, the point is what was advertised. If I needed firewire it should have been clearly stated. We live in America and if Adobe does business in America this is not something that should be found out by trail and error after purchase.
Over all I am happy with the product. I am not happy with how this was sold nor am I happy that the comments here stating I should have known or expected. That is what the sales department is for. If I should have known we get back to my first comment. I dont need to do business with Adobe if I should have known because quite frankly I am not a mind reader.
Not all customers are expert video editors. So, we rely on accurate information being told to us to make our decision.
As far as I am concerned this was not an unreasonable question nor expectation. My goal at the time was to be able to take a video and show my customers the video right then and there in a very quick manner. Sure, taking out the card is just a few seconds longer, but having a smooth presentation and only hooking up a wire is much nicer.
At this point I think I will check out other video editing programs and I will be judging them on how much valid information they readily give out.

  • Real-time control of properties

I'm poking around for a way to manually control a property of a layer in real-time, like you might do with pitch, playback speed, and volume on a MIDI controller.  Ideally, I'd like for AfterEffects to capture the changes as keyframes, or something like that.  I'd love to be able to drag a scrubber, or draw on a canvas with a stylus, and have AE translate those real-time movements into changes in clip properties.
I don't have a lot of experience with expressions, but I know how to write code.  I think, with some research, I can get this to happen by using the Write-On effect, drawing on a canvas with the stylus, and then linking various properties to the X and Y coordinates of the brush.  This is a decent partial solution -- at least I could capture organic movement and apply it to these properties, so I wasn't so hung up working with curves and Eases and quirky intermediate keyframes.
But it would be awesome if there was a plugin... or some precedent technique or expression... that would let me preview the clip in real time at a low resolution, and then use the stylus or mouse to capture movement as I watched.  It would be a great tool for syncing certain properties to a soundtrack, creating complex and organic animations, stuff like that.  I'd love to be able to do this with the TimeWarp property, and preview it as I went along.
"Changing properties" and "Controlling behavior" plus "Real-time" didn't come up with anything relevant, either here or in Google.  Anyone have any leads as to how this type of thing might be achieved?

As Mylenium says, Motion Sketch is one way. There are also some specific features that have this kind of thing built in, like sketching with the Puppet tools and recording paint strokes.

  • Basic 24" iMac 2.8GHz (Penryn) Captures HDV As ProRes In Real Time.

It's OK I'm not claiming any records.
It's just that I have been reading a lot about capturing ProRes from HDV and there are lots of warnings that capture will lag behind real time even with PowerMacs etc.
I was therefore pleasantly surprised to find that my unmodified iMac captured everything in Real Time even though I had 5 other apps open at the same time.
People often ask whether an iMac is suitable for FCP. This in no way is a definitive answer but it does suggest the iMac is certainly no slouch!

    Fantastic, Ian!!
Love the photos and I'll wager that pig was awesome. I'm a lifelong carnivore/omnivore and can't imagine a day without bacon.
Yeah, the iMac. No one here has ever doubted it's processing capabilities at all. Where the iMac lacks is with it's abject lack of expansion beyond it's firewire ports and if one goes into that limitation eyes wide open, then there is no reason at all one can't be productive with an iMac.
For whatever it's worth, I'm too timid to capture video with any other application save FCP working.

  • Real-time HDV importing ..& Happy New Year!

    Hi! Happy 2006!
Some time in December (?) I said I'd been to the London Apple Store to try importing HDV - with a Sony FX-1 camcorder - into iMovie HD on a PowerMac, to see if it'd import in "real time" ..instead of importing at half or quarter speed, on my PowerBook and Mac mini, while it converts hi-definition footage into Apple's 'Intermediate Codec' (to make HDV MPEG footage editable).
It couldn't be done in the hour and a half I was there, so an Apple Genius was going to get back to me.
After a bit of complaining and cajoling, a Genius at 'The Studio' in the Store finally got back to me on Jan 3rd. [I'm now back home, so this is my first visit to Discussions for a while!]
As I promised that I'd report back, here's what he said:
"Today I imported HDV 1080i footage into iMovie using the Sony HDR-FX1 Camcorder using a Dual 2.7 G5 Power Mac with 4.5 Gb of Ram and there didn't appear to be any lag, it was realtime. I would recommend having as much memory as possible and having less than 4.5 might mean there is a transcoding lag as iMovie converts the HDC encoded footage using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I do not have any details what the minimum speed processor and memory requirements are to achieve realtime import, however it is hardware dependent.
As another alternative you may consider using Final Cut Pro 5 software. This software uses the HDV Codec Natively and there is therefore no transcoding required. Capture is in realtime, whatever machine you use, so long as it is within the minimum requirements for Final Cut Pro 5. (Please check http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/specs.html for further detail) For details of using HDV with Final Cut Pro 5 please go to http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/editanything.html
I hope this goes someway to answering your queries."
(..So maybe I'll get a post-Christmas present of a quad ..Daniel's should have arrived by now ..wonder if his feet have touched the ground since..)
So we who patiently wait while iMovie HD imports hi-def HDV at half-speed or slower could achieve 'real-time' importing with a PowerMac and lots of RAM, it seems.
I also tried an HC-1 (..the compact 1-chip HDV camcorder..) and have to report that the auto-focus isn't anywhere near so fast as the pretty-near-instant focusing of the FX-1, and - predictably - its low-light performance isn't anywhere near the bright, un-grainy, colourful images of the FX-1. But the HC-1 does have NightShot and Super NightShot for shooting (monochrome) in absolute darkness, helped by infra-red LEDS on the camera, which the big, bulky FX-1 doesn't do. The HC-1 has just about all of the other gizmos of the FX-1 (..user-definable preset transitions - to zoom, change focus, adjust white balance, etc, automatically during shots..) but they're accessible mainly through touch-screen menus, instead of via quick push dedicated switches.
So Happy New Year; hope it's a good one - and a faster Mac DOES mean real-time importing of HDV footage!
[..I notice that Focus FireStore on-camera hard drives - which mean "say goodbye to importing, because your footage is saved to disc while you shoot" - have an HDV-compatible model ..but I think it still takes time to convert the captured HDV MPEG footage on the drive into Apple's Intermediate Codec for editing within iMovie HD. I'll investigate further..]
Hope you had a good Christmas/Hanukah/whatever!

  • Why is sharing HDV iMovie Project back to camera not in real time?

The posting from Michel Raymond on Dec 22th, 2009 asked the question of why is the transfer of iMovie HD Project to camera so long. In his case a 50 minute iMovie Project would have taken 1300 minutes to transfer had he proceeded.
In my posting of Dec 18th I pointed that my 57 minutes 48 GB HDV Project would have taken 43 hours to archive back to camera on mini DV tape.
Bengt Warleby, in his reply on Dec 23rd to Michel Raymond's posting, said that " to copy back to camera (mini DV tape) should take same as movie duration".
So I carried out a simple check of this possibility by downloading 6 minutes of HDV original footage to make a new 6 minute 4.2 GB iMovie Project. No editing was carried. ie no voice-overs, no transitions, nothing extra at all to modify the original footage. I then shared this Project back to the same video camera from which the original footage had been downloaded.
The first stage , "Mixing Audio" was very quick, less than 1 minute.
The 2nd stage of "Encoding" TOOK 23 MINUTES!
The final stage of "Writing to tape" took 6 minutes.
SO, IT TOOK A TOTAL OF 30 MINUTES TO TRANSFER BACK A 6 MINUTE iMOVIE PROJECT TO CAMERA.
WHY? Why was further encoding required when no changes or additions had been made to the original footage? Why was it not transferred back in the same real time as it was downloaded?
HELP.! I really need to have some answers.

in iM09, choose Export using QT, and for SD choose dv-stream, HD choose QT/AppleIntermediate.. these are the only two codecs in use in iMHD6.. don't be surprised: ~13/40GBs/h ..
Is Apple considering an update to add the share to camera feature to '09 or possibly in a future version? It's a valuable tool for archiving to tape rather than DVD/HD.
speculation, esp. on future  products is not allowed as topic on this board..
.. imho, this feature was axed&buried finally with iMHD6..

  • How to capture pc screen in real time?

Hi, recently i have been asked to make a java program that captures the pc screen and shows it, in real time, either in the same pc or another pc over the local network. To do this program, i could easilly make one that takes multiple pics of the screen and shows them, but that would be very slow, so i was thinking of doing one that captures the video stream and shows it directly on the program. Problem is, how do i do it using Java? I have no idea, so if anyone can enlighten me on a way how to do it, i would be very thankful.
on a side note, i have to make a new program, so i am not interested in another programs out there unless they java and open source for me to study.

you would think i didnt need to post that huh? but in fact, i've looked around this forum to see if i find a solution and i saw not only once or twice, but a really large number of advertisements of programs u had to pay and were closed, in many different threads, so a little infatuation on the fact i didn't need one of those here seemed it would help :P
thx for the answers, but neither of you focused on the real problem. First, i couldnt just plug the video board on another monitor because it would not be exactly what i need to do, i want the other monitor to be display its own computer system and have a manageable window in which it would show everything being done in the other computer, one i can open without having to mess with any cables. This application would be used in a ubiquitous project and messing with the cables wouldn't really fit in a ubiquitous description :P. I have tested sequenced screenshots, and it is indeed very slow, even in one pc showing the screen captures on itself, imagine over a network...
altough it may sound premature, doing the program with screen captures seems to me to be entirelly different from doing it getting the feed directly from the video board, maybe with the exception of the little player window that would go with it. But once done, i would be more then happy to test it out and say which of the two would be better to send over the network.
well, for what i understand, the first poster seems to say there is no way in doing it the way i was trying to do with java, so i'll probably have to get a C program to capture it then send to a java on via socket, but if anyone else out there would know anything that could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Real-Time Capture in Final Cut Express

    Hi All -
I own a music venue, and we're considering adding video recording services (current we just offer audio). To reduce labor, I'm planning on a fixed mounted camera (brand/model TBD) from one of our lighting trusses (on the ceiling). We'd like to stream the video footage into a PowerMac and/or PowerBook in real time (presumably via a long firewire cable), thus avoiding the use of tapes, etc... So two questions:
1- Can Final Cut Express handle direct capture of video in Real Time? If so, are there any constraints, such as 7200 RPM harddrive, no HD, etc..., that I need to be aware of?
2- We plan to capture audio separately so that we can mix it in 16-track format in our ProTools HD studio. Will FCE work with a time code (SMTPE, etc...), or are there other prefer methods of keeping the sources in synch?
Any other thoughts from concert film masters would be appreciated! We're a small venue (150 person capacity) and will be using this mostly for student recitals and local bands - thus we need to be frugal and minimize the number of people needed to run it.
    Thanks!

    1. There are limitations to the length of FireWire cable data can be streamed. You might want to check up on this. FCE captures DV in realtime. You'll need a fast drive either in the computer or an external FW drive at least 7200rpm with 8MB cache.
    2. No.

  • Real Time - Capture sound signal from Mic then store to memory.

    Hi people,
I wish to do a real time program that capture the data (+the ADC discrete digitized sound data+) from mic then store the data in memory...
Then my program retrieve the data continuously from the memory (as long as there are captured data from mic)
But i have no idea how JAVA deal with real time program that use memory to store the captured data.
i do know that JAVA do have class INPUTSTREAM to deal the real time thing that fetch the byte of data to program. But still wish to get more reference from here (never use this class before).
Please advise how can i start from "signal" the mic to store the captured data to memory and my program able to retrieve the data from memory then work my algorithm on it.
Or can correct me how actually i should store the captured data... i should store the data in memory or store the data as a variable?
MANY MANY MANY MANY thanks!!! Very appreciate for the advise and i will give my attempt :-).

    I m sorry..
I was intend to ask the correct way to store the digitized data from microphone.
As all my previous work were storing the keyboard input as an declared variable or store in local server database.
But this time i wish to store the captured and quantized sound data from mic and no idea where should i start from...
Please give me some advise please.
I dun wish to save what i captured as a .wav file then only process the .wav file data.
But wish to process the data that was captured at instant.
I m very appreciate for your advise here.

  • Hi, I would like to ask about how to capture data from real time loop.

    Hi,
Here is some overvier of my project:
I have done real time control using labview 9.0. I used PID controller.
In order to optimise this controller, I need to capture data from my sensor(input) and actuator (output).
    1. For example while real time control is running. I need to capture 1000 sample data (sensor(input) and actuator (output)).
Then I will used these data for PID optimisation on the other loop without intefere my real time loop.
    2. When PID optimisation is completed, I will sent its PID parameter to real time control loop.
    3. These operation is done in parallel.
Anybody can help me to solve these. Your idea may solve my problem.
    TQ

Typically you will have to use RT FIFO or Queue communication to avoid any impact to your time critical loop.
    Best regards

  • Does a capture card improve real time functions?

I am reading posts regarding capture cards and i figured for DV material, capture card may not be necessary as firewire is there. but does capture cards improve the effeciency of the machine /CPU , does it render faster and play more real time effects?
    thanks
    sameer

The Aurora is a Standard Definition card and the Decklink is an HD card. I don't have them both installed at the same time...I put in what I need. Right now I am working with HD so I have the decklink card in.
AJA I/O is a standard definition "solution." I say solution because it isn't a capture card per se, but rather an external box that captures SD signals (SDI, Component, Composite) and inputs them into FCP via a firewire connection to the computer. This allows it to be used on multiple machines easily. The Kona series are High Def cards that need to be installed in the PCI slots of your computer.
What is my workflow with the DSR-11? Probably the same as you. DV/NTSC Easy Setup, then connect it to the computer via firewire and capture. When I am done, I output back to tape. What else is there to do with this?
Codecs? DV, 8-bit uncompressed SD, DCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD. Depends on the project I am working on and how it was shot.
10-bit uncompressed DV? DV by nature is compressed 5:1 when it is recorded to tape. When you capture that via firewire from your DSR-11 deck, you are capturing it at the highest possible quality. It is simply a file transfer. Now, if you were delivering on DV then you don't need a capture card. But if you were, say, needing to deliver a digibeta master, or betasp, then you'd need a capture card to output to that format...uprezzing the DV footage to 8-bit uncompressed (better color space, beter codec for graphics and stils) and output. 10-bit is overkill for DV.
My workflow depends on the footage I am given and the format I need to master to. My HD workflow differs greatly from my DV workflow, which differs from my SD Uncompressed workflow. To go into detail of each would mean writing an article, and I am too busy editing to do that.

  • What are the different between Netflow protocols and Real Time Capture

    Hi Gurus,
Let me know, if you have a link will be excelent, the different if we capture traffic in Real Time (using Spam Port) or export traffic by Netflow protocol.
When I capture traffic and analysis it (using Wireashark or TCPDump) in Real Time I see in detail all data, but in Netflow I see statistic?
Any other tip or link where could explian in detail, please?

Capturing packets via a span port and inspecting with Wireshark or   any pcap analysis tools is looking at actual datagrams - the details are   much more indepth and detailed and you are not missing anything. You  see the actual IP conversations.
NetFlow captures the  header information from each of the IP conversations  traversing your  networking device and allows for flow analysis tools to  decipher them  and display the results. With NetFlow, each IP  conversation is  represented in a flow with information about its source  and destination  IP Address, port numbers, protocol, ToS, etc. Now  remember, NetFlow is  not all sampled - It captures all the IP  conversation information.  There is also sampled NetFlow like Seb stated  in the previous reply,  but not all NetFlow is sampled. You can enable  sampling to capture 1 in  100 packets or 1 in x packets.
A  simpler way to put it  is, consider a phone call. Packet capture is like  knowing who called  whom, how did they call, what did they use, when did  they call and also  get to know what did they talk about.
NetFlow  is like your phone bill - you know who called  whom, when it happened,  how long they talked, etc., but you do not know  what did they talk  about.
If you have a resource intensive network, capture NetFlow from all the nodes and do spanning from the most important interfaces.
