Capturing screen in Final Cut

Watching any and all tutorial style videos at Apple or of others, shows a full screen view of a Macbook Pro lets say and then they scroll in and out on the screen. I assume they are using the control + scroll wheel to accomplish this? Also, what kind of screen capture device are they using? I'm using iShowU and while its a really cool program, I'm getting really bad results when i try to go full screen.
The only way I've found to get real clean video is to set my view area to around 720x480. This seems to give pretty clear text but you loose being able to see the whole picture.
Thanks for any info you can provide.
glenn

Its not really SnapzPro causing the problem but rather the size of the capture area I think. The reason is that no matter what settings I select the Final Cut version is very fuzzy unless I set my original capture size to 720x480. I thought maybe making a larger area but with the same ration would work but at the moment that is all I can get to work. It is nice and clear but distracting because I'm having to move around on the screen to show all of the forms I'm working with.
I wish there was something on the net describing how to do this but so far I've found nothing.
Thanks,
glenn

  • Opening log and capture shuts down final cut pro

Hi, I am using final cut pro 5.1 and when I open my log and capture window, the final cut pro instantly shuts down. I just upgraded to 10.4.10. Would that be the problem?
Also, now it doesn't pick up my deck connection via firewire to my sony dsr-11 pal deck.
    Everything was working fine before.
    any advice?

Have you updated all the way to FCP 5.1.4? (or the latest version of 5.1)?
Also, after a system update, trashing the FCP Prefs can usually help out any instability. FCP Rescue makes that nice and easy.

  • Screen capture blurry in final cut, but not Motion

I screen captured something from the internet using snapz pro (I tried DV-ntsc, h.264, and now using 'none'). It looks great when its motion, but after render, looks bad in final cut. I tried bringing the file into motion and then exporting a loss-less from there and then bringing into final cut, but its the same problem of being blurry.
the video was captured 4x3, though its larger than 720x480. Thats one of the reasons I threw it into Motion, because it would standardize the size in the case that final cut didnt like it. I need to get rid of the blur. help.
    eric

Also, if your file is LARGER in Motion, as you said, and then you drop it into a DV sequence, not only will it shrink, but it will inherit the DV 5:1 compression.
What size are you using in Motion? What settings? If you want it to look that good in FCP, you need to use the same settings in FCP. If you are adding it to a DV sequence, then you will have to live with the DV compression. OR, try it in a DV50 sequence. Better compression, higher bit rate.

  • Trouble capturing footage to final cut express

    hey this is quite urgent....
i am trying to upload footage to final cut express from my sony DCR-HC52E. it sais VTR OK and plays and pauses and stuff but i cannot see anything it just stayed on those coloured bars.
i can see it playing on the camera though...
i got it working once with this camera, just cant remember how
any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi
My table for this was once for iMovie - BUT it's more General than that so You might find help here.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odwenGB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Capturing video on final cut express

I have connected my sony camera to my macbook computer and opened up final cut express
HD. It shows that my camera is indeed connected. I go up to file and click capture and the capture window opens. I click on capture now and my camera starts up and a black screen appears but nothing happens. When I hit escape, I return to the capture window and my movie is playing in the display window but nothing is being captured. What am i doing wrong?

Well one of the first things you're doing wrong is posting your FCE question in the FCP forum
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936
I don't use FCE, so I'm not sure how its operation differs from FCP in this regard, but my guess is that you have not switched your camera to VTR mode and so what you may be seeing in the capture window is the back of the lens cap.

  • Unable to connect to Deck or Camera to capture footage. Final cut pro6

    Hey guys,
I am wondering if anybody who has been in my situation or know how i can resolve my problem can help me.
I have been using my Deck to upload all my footage, in standard def, and my JVC GY HD100 camera to upload all HD footage without any problems until the last week.
I have been shooting alot of footage (SD) that needs to be captured and also master copies to be burnt to MINIDV from my computer, and i can not locate any of the devices which i would like to use.
When i open my FCP i get the following error message.
Unable to locate the following external devices:
    Apple FIrewire PAL (720x576)
Dispite (on both occasions ) the JVC Camera and also the JVC BR-HD50 Deck is connected via Fire wire.
    - I also changed all A/V Settings with no luck
    - Tried using different FW Ports
    - Trashed the preferences
    - downloaded the updated Quicktime software and deleted the old versions
When i go into the System settings, the Firewire tab also says that the device is unrecognised.
    - I have tried closing the mac down to reset the FW ports (many times last week, and it has also been off all weekend and it is still not allowing any connection to either camera or deck)
I do not know what else I can do to resolve the problem.
Is it a problem with Final Cut Pro, The deck, camera, or fire wire itself?
Or (as i suspect) a problem with the Mac?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dane

    Hi David
Thanks for your reply - i Should have stated that i do only use either the Cam or the Deck at any given time - i do not have more than one DV device connected to Mac at any one time.
Sorry about not including that piece of information. Have you any other ideas??? I dont want to reinstall the OS from the disc until i have tried everything else, and unless its absolutly necessary.

  • Capturing Photos onto Final Cut Express

Where my Emac is not connected to the Internet, how do I capture photos to put into a Final Cut Express project?

You import photos into FCE, not capture them. (File > Import)
It's not necessary for your Mac (eMac or otherwise) to be connected to the internet unless you are trying to download photos from a website. Is that what you want to do?

  • Capturing HD in final cut express

    A few capture questions:
    1. Is there a way to capture HD material in final cut express?

    thank you.

From what version up can final cut express capture HD?
question 2: I'm running material from a BetaHD deck, but it doesnt have a fire wire connection, so i'm connecting video and audio cables to a digital converter which is connected to the computer via fire-wire. Does the HD signal maintain over this transfer?

  • IPad captured video and Final Cut Pro

    hello,
i am editing videos captured with an iPad 2 in FInal Cut Pro 7, but Final Cut is running really slow and rendering becomes impossible when adding a second video track with either video or photoshop files with a transparency for example. There is no Unlimitted RT option available and the process has become very slow.
Is there any way of previewing video and audio without rendering all the time?
    iPad video format is:
    H.264, 1920x1080, FPS 29.95
    Sequence settings:
    1920x1080 - HDTV1080i(16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dominance: Upper (odd)
    Editing timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: H.264
    Any help apreciated!

Converted videos with MPEG streamclip to Pro ResLT and workflow is a lot smoother now in FCP7.
    thank you David and David.

  • Can I use a blue screen with Final Cut Pro X?

Hi, I am at a school that uses Macbooks and has just purchased a blue screen (with lighting).  I am new at chromakey / blue screening.  I know that you can use iMovie for green screens, but could somebody please tell me what is a good software to use for a blue screen?  Does Final Cut Pro X work with blue screens?
If anyone has any advice I would be very grateful!!
    Thanks,
    From Michelle.

The keyer effect in FCPX works very well with blue screen. Open effects browser and look for Keyer. When you add it to your blue screen clip it will automatically pick up the blue screen and key it out. You also have several controls to fine tune the edges etc.

  • Capturing HDV onto Final Cut using an IMAC

I just purchased an IMAC with 1 gig of memory and I installed Final Cut Pro 5. Capturing video is very slow, especially when acquistion is complete because processing is so very, very slow. Any way to speed up processing?
    Thanks.
imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Capturing FCP

    Yes.
Anything below FCP 5.1 will run under the PowerPC emulation, Rosetta, on an Intel iMac - I'm amazed it works at all, never mind slowly.
You need to send your CD's off for a 'crossgrade' to the Universal Binary version of Final Cut (5.1), go here for options and order forms:
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
If you already had Final Cut Studio, the fee is $50, if you had just one of the Studio products the fee is more (e.g. only Final Cut Pro, $99), but you get the whole studio package for not a lot of money.
The 5.1 universal binary version will also work on your PowerPC mac, and your new Intel mac - at blazing speed.
I sent mine off a week ago - still not had it back (being in Canada may make a difference) so you may need to go back to your old machine to get work done in the mean time.

  • Capture HDV without Final Cut?

I am on a shoot in a country that is known for confiscating tapes. Therefore, I need to have a backup of everything I shoot. Unfortunately, my plan of using a Firestore FS-4 failed when it broke 4 days into my shoot. My Mac does not have Final Cut on it and I can't find a way to download it. Is there any way to capture HDV with a program other than Final Cut?

    Sorry no.
I am surprised when you say iMovie captures at 1/8 speed.
I haven't tried it with AIC but I have tested FCE and my iMac was able to capture in realtime.
I can't see why iMovie should be so slow. Even if you have a very old, slow computer it shouldn't take more than 30% longer than realtime.
Have you been using iMovie 08? The much more "professional" iMovie 06 can be downloaded free here:-

  • Capturing HD in Final Cut 6

I am purchasing a new MacBook Pro and in reading the system requirements for Final Cut Pro it says..
"Capturing HD resolution video using the ProRes 422 format requires a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor or a G5 Quad computer and a qualified third-party capture card."
To me, this means I can not use a MacBook Pro, only Mac Pro, right? In the other sections it clearly states both MackBook Pro and Mac Pro, so now I'm nervous that I will not be able to use a laptop for my editing purposes.
It doesn't seem right but does state this on the website. Can anyone offer any insight into this matter?
    Thanks in advance!

"Capturing HD resolution video using the ProRes 422 format requires a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor or a G5 Quad computer and a qualified third-party capture card."
That is capturing ONE FORMAT of HD. There are several formats. HDV, DVCPRO HD, XDCAM, Uncompressed HD, ProRes. Several of these are capturable via firewire, no capture card needed...HDV, DVCPRO HD, XDCAM. And believe it or not, with FCP 6.0.2, you can capture HDV as ProRes via firewire:
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php
Now...when they talk about qualified 3rd party capture card, they mean those by www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. Interestingly enough, to capture any format to ProRes with a capture card, you need an intel mac. With a MacBook Pro, there is only one device that can capture to ProRes and connect to that computer, the AJA I/O HD.

  • How do I capture HDV in Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 from a Sony HDR-CX360?

Hi. I recently upgraded to a Sony HDR-CX360 Camera. I've been importing off of Firewire with my older cameras. Now I face only being able to import with USB. It is not recognizing the camera. How do I import with this kind of camera and Final Cut Pro 6.0.6.? It works fine with iMovie.

    Hi,
There are a couple of things I would do in your position .. first off make sure the camera is turned on and connected BEFORE I start FCP. another would be to run up system profiler and have a look in FireWire - and see (obviously with the camera connected) is it listed in there .. If not in effect the MAC is not seeing the camera and Failing that if it is a six pin on the camera connect to a six pin port .. I had issues with a Camera (Canon XHA1s) which the MAC Pro FireWire (8 pin) would not list the camera until I installed an two port 6 pin FireWire card .. It works every time now. Hope you get it sorted ..
