Capturing (Tethering) in Aperture 3

I have  one of my Nikon DSLRs tethered to Aperture 3 and have managed to doa  capture session.  The image files ppear in the project that I have directed them to.  However I can not open the images or edit them etc.  They appear in the browser within Aperture but thay will not open.  If I try to use a comand through the adjustment HUD for example, the file privew will dissapear seemingly to be lost forever.
Are the files being stored in some other location, thought he privews (if that is what they are) seem to be in the project I want them to be in. I ahve tried all right click dropdown options to see if there is aanything that may be obvious to get the images to load so they can be edited.  No luck.
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
Thanks.
Iain.

When you started the session did you specify the files to be stored in a location other than the Aperture Library? If so make sure Aperture can still connect to this location. Aperture won't be able to find referenced files if the drive is unavailable or you have moved the images using Finder. If this is the case there will be an little yellow triangle in the bottom right corner of the image warning you it can't find the referenced files.
If you've moved them you'll have to use File>Locate Referenced Files to reconnect to their new location, you'll only have to do one, it should find all the rest by itself.

  • Capture Sharpening in Aperture

Is there a good source for information about capture shapening within Aperture? Using edge sharpening, it seems to do a reasonable job for files that will not be enlarged much, but when I try to print even 16x20 from a 6 MP file, the images seem either soft, or if I boost the sharpening, I see artifacts and crunchy pixels. If I export files without sharpening and use Photokit Sharpener for capture and output sharpening, all is well. I have been using Lightroom since it was in beta, and I am very happy with the capture sharpening there. I'd like to get similar results from Aperture if I am going to use it regularly. (Perhaps the rumored 2.0 update will take care of that)

There really isn't an Aperture equivalent to Photokit and its one of the big drawbacks of Aperture for me. The problem is that to do "Bruce Fraser" type sharpening you need to do output sharpening at the desired output resolution. There is no way to do this in the current version of Aperture.
However, I have a workaround that sort of works. I alter the sharpening in Raw Fine tuning to do capture sharpening and then I use Edge Sharpening for output sharpening. I got the settings by starting with unsharpened raw images. I exported them to Photoshop and used Photokit to do capture sharpening. I then went back to Aperture and adjusted the sharpening in raw fine tuning to match ( as well as I could) the results in Photoshop.
Output sharpening was harder because it depends on the size you will print at, but I followed a similar procedure except in this case I tested parameters by exporting the file from Aperture at various sizes after sharpening and then comparing to a version sharpened with Photokit. I did this at two sizes, full size and roughly half-size at 300 dpi.
I went through this because I was doing an Aperture book and I didn't want to have to export each photo in the book to Photoshop for sharpening. It worked pretty well both with Apple printing and SharedInk printing.
The settings I used are below, but they were created for a 6 Megapixel DLSR ( a Canon D60). You would have to alter the settings for different cameras, though the approach to finding the settings would be the same:
    Capture Sharpening:
    Wide Edge
    Intensity:0.60
    Edges:0.63
    Medium Edge
    Intensity:0.60
    Edges:1.0
    Output Sharpening;
    Using Edge Sharpen:
    Full size
    Intensity:0.5
    Edges:1.0
    Fall off:0.7
    Half-size
    Intensity:0.5
    Edges:1.0
    Fall off:1.0
The settings worked better for full size than half-size.
If Apple is listening then I would suggest that they read Bruce Fraser's Real World Sharpening book and allow Aperture to match the multi-pass sharpening approach he outlines. That would primarily involve changes in edge sharpening, by allowing it to be done at final output resolution and allowing edge sharpen settings to be sensitive to output resolution.

  • Cameras that Support Tethering in Aperture?

    Hi
Does anyone have a list of cameras that support tethering in Aperture please?
    Many thanks

    Take a look here: http://www.20seven.org/blog/articles/2008/02/17/cameras-that-work-or-dont-with-a perture-20/
Most Nikon DSLRs will work, however only a few Canon DSLRs is supported.

  • Using tethering in Aperture

When using tethering in Aperture, is it possible to have the shots appear behind a pre-designed layout for composition control?

Allen -- Frank and Neil have giving excellent answers.  Personally, I found Betty Edwards lessons to be better than her science.  You might also look for Harold Speed's book on drawing (was available in a Dover edition), as well as (in a different vein) James Watrous' excellent "The Craft of Old Master Drawings".  But the _very best_ advice I can give you is:  don't read; draw.  Just get a bunch of #2 pencils (with erasers, they have always been used), and _draw every day_.  Drawing is a skill.  Skill increases through repetition and active engagement.  For adults, the biggest hurdle is accepting that they draw with the skill of someone who has rarely drawn (hence the exercises to "short-circuit" the squelcher in your brain).  Start with ... carrots.  Peel them, cut them into 1/2 to 3" lengths, set three or four pieces before you, and copy their outlines and the edges between the flat faces left by the peeler.  Concentrate on the angle of the lines on the paper (vertical, horizontal, by how much), and how they correspond to the 3D forms of the carrot pieces.  This is hard, but your drafting skills will have given you the (invaluable) ability to imagine forms in space.  Set in the corner of your eye a meter gauging when the paper is _activated_.  I'm not going to define that -- you'll have to feel for it.  Learn how to tingle this awareness, and tingle it constantly.
When you feel comfortable with this, set the carrots up on a piece of paper, and after your first drawing, rotate the paper 30° and do a second drawing.
Other variations will occur to you.
And in the meantime, carry a sketchbook with you and when you see an interesting leaf, draw it.
When you're ready to try plants you'll know.
Drawing animals is hard.  Start with sleeping ones.
Drawing people is _very very very hard_.
    To repeat the important parts:
    - draw _often_.  Frequency is more important than duration.  As Michelangelo said to his students: "Not a day without a line!"
    - be kind with yourself.  No-one was born drawing well (drawing prodigies are extremely rare -- Durer was one).
    - carry a sketchbook
    - stick with one tool for a good bit.  Pencil is great.  If you prefer something else, use it.
    - learn to create form (the effect of 3D) with line.  Shading comes later.
    - _activate_ the page on which you draw.  Red-line that little meter in the corner of your eye.
When you have schooled your hand and judgement by such diligence, you will acquire rapidity before you are aware of it.
    Leonardo Da Vinci
Above all else, have fun.  Post back at some point.  .

  • Can't Store Files in correct folder when Tethering in Aperture 2

    Hi everyone,
I've been using Aperture 2 for two years now tether shooting with a Nikon D300 with no major problems with only minor problems along the way.
I'm now having problems when tethering storing my particular files in its designated folder. I have all my projects organized and referenced folders that mirror how my projects are organize. Its just one particular project and now I can not store file in its designated folder. When starting to tether, I can choose the correct project and from the Store Files drop down box, the designated folder is grayed out and I can't select the folder I want the images to store in.
If I select "Choose" from the drop down box, and then select the designated folder, Aperture selects the next folder down on the Store Files drop down box. It just started happening. I can correct the files location in Finder but thats just a nuisance. Its just this one folder thats giving me problems.
Any help would be appreciated? thx

  • Capture NX or Aperture 2 with D300 ***

Alright, so what is the big deal about RAW files from a D300 not working right with anything but Capture NX. Can someone tell me how I'm supposed to edit 2000 pics from the wedding I'm about to shoot next week with Capture NX when it is so slow and has the worst user interface ever? Because Aperture 2 doesn't read my RAW files correctly. Or is this just something people are blowing way out of context? Should I not worry about this:
    http://www.flickr.com/groups/aperture_users/discuss/72157604790242946/

The "picture styles" information (punchy, vibrant, portrait, faithful, whatever Nikon calls it I use Canon) is Nikon proprietary info in the RAW file. Aperture won't read it -- it does a default conversion.
That is why the Nikon version is so (over)saturated in the examples you showed. Aperture most certainly does read your RAW files correctly; it just doesn't read Nikon's proprietary tags.
What can you do? Well, for photos that are in similar light, you can tweak one of them (crank the saturation and/or vibrance) and the lift and stamp it to the rest. Should be pretty quick.
I don't think though it's really reasonable to say "This is the default Aperture conversion with NO adjustments this is a real problem." Because, well, RAW files tend to be flat. They tend to need a tweak or two, but for 2000 files in Aperture in similar light it wouldn't take all that long to tweak them all and convert them to JPEGs in Aperture. On a high-end machine maybe 2 minutes to edit one image and then 10 seconds per image to stamp and export.

  • Auto advance when tethering in Aperture 3

Does anyone know how I can set Apreture 3 to autoadvance to the newest frame when shooting with a tethered camera? I've looked everywhere and cant seem to figure this out.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Just tested again to be sure since I usually run with auto-advance off. Works as described on a Macbook Pro runnning Aperture 3.2.1 on OS X 10.7.2. Checking/unchecking Auto Select turns advance on or off as expected.
What versions of stuff are you running?
Also are you in full screen mode? I noticed some funny/inconsistent behavior when switching full-screen mode on and off during tethering. Don't have time to spend with it now, sorry. Try it with full-screen on and off and see what happens.

  • Can I change image date and capture year in Aperture?

Is there a way to manually change the image date and capture year (and other metadata for that matter) upon import? I have some pictures given to me by friends that they took on their own cameras and I want to import them into my Aperture Library, only it seems as though they didn't pay attention to/care about setting the date/time on their cameras. This causes me to lose sequence with my own photos that were taken with my camera on the same day.
I tried to append and replace the IPTC Metadata, but that didn't seem to work. What can be done about this, or am I just stuck with some out of sequence photos when I sort by image date?

    RB,

  • Nikon D90 & Tethering with Aperture

I bought the Nikon D90 because Apple says it is supported by Aperture, but
all of the tethering options are greyed out. I have download the Camera
Control Pro 2 and gotten it to work but I can not get Aperture to work.
What am I doing wrong??? Does anyone else have the D90 & Aperture
Tethering working? If so could you please tell me how you got it to work?
    Any help would be appreciated!!

I had the problem with my D80 initially too. Change your USB setting under the SETUP menu to PTP. Then plug the USB into your computer. Make sure you select a/the project you want the tethered shots to enter from your D90 on the import page. Open the tether dialog again and you should be able the "start session". From there, just leave the import page by clicking on the project you are shooting into.
I know love tethered shooting. You can even fire the shutter from the computer, which I didn't know. Good luck

  • Turn off the Auto adjust when shooting tethered in aperture

is there any way to turn off the auto adjust feature in aperture? When I shoot tethered it over corrects and ruins all the shots, then I have to adjust back for the client to get a good idea of the image.

After the disaster of iTunes 11.1 that deleted nearly all my archived podcasts (recovered from backup thankfullly) I was shocked, but not altogether surprised, to see that the option to delete played episodes has been enabled/re-enabled by default.
From the lower right of the Podcasts window click Settings then, if needed, click Defaults, then turn Delete Played Episodes to Off.
Why set the destructive option as the default?
I have many episodes that I want to keep that are no longer available at their feed so the last thing I want is any automatic delete process to be enabled.

  • Tiggering multiple DSLRs tethered to Aperture

How would one go about triggering multiple cameras through Aperture; this would require plugins and perhaps a little modification on the USB hardware but I'd like to fire multiple cameras together. I can do this in H/W but I'd rather see if a plugin for this exists.
I'm going to be using multiple Nikon DSLRs, which when using PTP only allow remote shutter release through the USB connection.
Any Express-card based solutions out there?

  • Aperture 3 tethered with Nikon D300 trouble

I've been having trouble shooting tethered with Aperture 3 and the Nikon D300. It works for a few shots then it jams with the spinning wheel until i have to force quit. Also the inspector column gets messed up with type over type. I'm assuming apple will issue an update for this but i'm not very impressed. I have been using Capture one, trial version in the meantime to get by until a fix arrives and it has been working fine. Nice fast captures and no BS. <Edited By Host>

I gave up with shooting tethered in Aperture 3. I now use Capture one 5 Pro from phase one. I use Aperture for the image adjustment because i like the built in retouch tools and the image management (although my search does not work in Aperture 3, waiting for an update). I'm not impressed with Apple software right now.
Capture one works flawless tethered, the fastest importing i've ever had and didn't take long to get used to the focus tools etc. Try the 30 day free trial and you'll see. When I'm done a shooting session, i just drag the capture folder (with the NEF files) onto a flash drive and import them into Aperture for adjustment.

My Canon XTi is recognized and shows up in the tether HUD but the "Capture" is grayed. Anyone having similar issues?

  • Tethering aperture

Having a hard time getting my Canon Rebel Xti to work with Aperture.
Aperture can detect my camera, but when I click the capture button in the HUD nothing happens. When I hit the shutter button on my camera it doesn't take a picture.
I'd like to set up my Mac Book Pro to essentially be a large LCD sceen as I'm shooting so I can see whether or not my lighting is correct.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I don't know if this helps you with your problem: since upgrading to version 3.13 I too had problems with tehering, downgrading to 3.12 solved this.
In version 3.13 tethered photos were saved in a folder "capture" located inside the Aperture library (ctrl show package content in the finder), but the photos didn't show up in Aperture.
In version 3.12 the photos are correcttly transferred to a date/time folder inside the Aperture lib.
Maybe you could check, whether you have some photos inside the folder "capture" inside your Aperture library, prior to version 3.13 this folder didn't receive any pictures from tethered cameras, so I think it could be a bug in Aperture 3.13.
