Capturing uncompressed HDCam into MBP

Hi All, this is my first post.
I would like to capture uncompressed HDCam into my MBP.
Would it be possible to do this using a Blackmagic Design Decklink Studio Card (designed for the Mac Pro) and a PCI Express adapter?
If anyone has any ideas other than this I would be grateful to hear them or if you have used the above setup and it worked...
TIA

I'm guessing you'll get a better, more informed response over at the "video production" discussion:

Good luck! Joel.

Thanks for all these replies, I was hoping to use this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cardbusto_ExpressCardAdapter.jpg
    ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Cardbusto_ExpressCardAdapter.jpg )
The ExpressCard has a maximum throughput of 2.5 Gbit/s through PCI Express
    and plug it into this:

If not then can I assume that the Mac Pro Quad Core (the cheapest Mac Pro) do the job? Or will I still need the Blackmagic Decklink card?

  • Screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15"

When I do a screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15" and paste it into Outlook or any other program it looks huge and distorted, how do I fix this?
I'm assuming it's because I am capturing the image in Retina 2880x1400 and then trying to paste that image into a non Retina enabled 3rd party program so it scales the image down which causes it to blow up the img and distort/pixelate.
I'm assuming there is a simple common sense fix for this which  Iam obviously unaware of...?

False alarm, took memory stick back to store and fault is same on shops mbp-r.  They swapped it for a new one and now everything is fine.  Sorry apple, how could I have doubted you!!

  • FCP crashes when capturing uncompressed video/drops frames on playback

I have just started using FCP 6 but had similar problems with 5. FCP seems to work fine with lower data rate captures and playback like DV25. When I try to capture uncompressed 8 or 10 bit SD or HD it will capture for a while then eventually crash. Shorter captures of 20 or so minutes will work ok but then the video will drop frames and stall on playback. It will suggest lowering real time audio tracks, changing the RT settings etc., but it is only a 2 audio track capture with video and RT is already set to dynamic. I have successfully done this before so I know the hardware is capable, I have captured and played back 1.5 hours of continuous 10 bit uncompressed SD without incident. The system hasn't had a lot of other stuff installed on it. It seems like there must be some sort of software conflict.

I am capturing to a Ciprico dual channel U320 array attached to a ATTO UL4D SCSI controller. I don't use the system for these data intensive captures all that often and sometimes I have no problem at all and other times I do. I noticed that the raw movies would play in the quicktime player ok without stalling or dropping frames so the issue seems to be with final cut. The last time I had this problem was with playing back 720p DVCProHD files and it would only play for a few minutes and then give a error message about dropping frames and suggesting lowering the number of audio tracks and changing the RT settings. I am thinking there must be a software conflict. We just installed FCP 6 and this was the first capture I did with it and had the same old problem right off the bat.

  • Capturing Uncompressed 24p from an XL2?

Hello I have an XL2 that I shot two reels of 24p 16x9 footage. I was having troubles capturing the footage and then found the posts in here for using the basic DV NTSC with advanced pulldown. But that is a 15:1 compression ratio is it not? If so is there a way to capture uncompressed? Thank you

No...that is a simple file transfer. The footage captured is the EXACT same resolution as is what is recorded onto your tape.
That compression is 5:1. But that 5:1 compression happens on the tape.
SO if you capture DV/NTSC with advanced pulldown removal, you are getting the best quality you are going to get.

  • Capturing uncompressed SD using Firewire?

I have been using Firewire to capture my footage. I read in the manual that Firewire is not recommended for capturing HD or uncompressed SD. First of all, I assume that capturing uncompressed SD is better than compressed and secondly how much am I losing by using Firewire?? Thanks, Sara

You should capture in the format that the material was originally recorded in. In the case of the GL2, this is DV which by definition is compressed and designed to be captured via Firewire. True uncompressed would need something like this:

for capture. Not to mention a very expensive camera!

  • Transferring from camera to external into MBP

While my G5 is in the shop I'm wondering how best to transfer DVX 100B footage to an external IOMEGA FW 800 drive. The drive has an available 400 firewire port and I am using the 800 port going into my MBP. Before I tried going through the 400 fw port in the Iomega I wanted to ask if this is a possibility or would everything start burping and smoking? And is there a better 'plan B' I should be looking into? Thanks.
    Using FCP 2.

It took me a while to understand what is happening here - but let me try to recap so I make sure I understand.
You want to take your external drive - send the 800 port to the MBP and send the 400 to the DVX100B - and capture to the drive - basically making your MBP a pass through - and hope that it all plays nice together?
I can tell you - I have done this sort of daisy chaining on a few occasions and not had any issues. However, I didn't do with different FW speeds - but, I don't know if that would matter.
Maybe try to log and capture one clip and see what happens.
I don't think it will burp at you. Maybe ***** and moan...

  • Capturing HD (miniDV) to MBP

    Ok here we go:
we are off around the world, we have a trusty Sony HC1 (mini DV camcorder), we are looking at getting the entry level MBP 13", coupled to our lacie 500GB external HDD can we capture the HD video direct into the external HDD by daisy chaning? the MBP will be connected FW800 to FW800.
Am I correct in guessing that we simply connect FW on the HC1 to the HDD? oh and we are using Final Cut Express HD

I've rendered 1 hour vids on far less capable pieces of machinery than an MBP13, mike!
The AVCHD question may be a different matter, though. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793
Sony unfortunately often don't play as nicely with Macs (or standards generally) as Canon and Panasonic. They have something of a penchant for going off on tangents of their own.
But as far as future Sony / Mac application software Q's go , you may be better off asking them in the iMovie or Final Cut forums, rather than here. Those guys are all over such sorts of questions in a flash!
    Cheers

  • How to automatically crop images in Image Capture for import into iPhoto?

On my PowerBook G4 / Mac OS X 10.4.2, I'm using the Image Capture 3.0.3 application to capture images coming from scanning photographs with a CanoScan 8400F.
Can I get the Image Capture application to automatically set the crop frame on the overview? Other applications do that, but with Image Capture it seems that after I do the Overview (preview), I have to manually set the crop frame by clicking and dragging, before I can click the Scan button to do the scan?
P.S. It seems that iPhoto does not handle scanning, and you do have to use a different application to scan photos before importing them into iPhoto.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

If you hide the details pane Image Capture will scan immediately to a specified folder. Other way is to open printers and faxing from the system preferences , select the scanning tab of your printer and click Open scanner. It will start scanning immediately without opening Image Capture. To set other software as default you should open Image Capture, select your printer/scanner and click the scanner buttons. It will then let you chose which program should be launched when you scan a document.

  • HD Live Capture (aka Capture Now fcp7) into FCPX

I imagine that if you can capture live footage from an onboard iSight camera, you should be able to plug something a little nicer in that gives you a little more control. I've been struggling with this for the past few weeks and have been to a few different stores to test cameras and haven't found anything that works yet.
My criteria for the camera needs to be HD and I need to be able to get a lav mic plugged into it.
Other than that, I'm pretty open to whatever (preferrably something around $2-5k).
Any thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ian

That make not a great difference for me.
I only see that I cannot capture videos using my DV Firewire camera as a video converter.
Probably timecode is not so important (for me) since FCE captures without it, FCP X by iSight captures without it, Quicktime (for only about an hour) capture without it, iMovie captures (? I have never tried) without it... but all of them capture the video!!! And do the job.
I think that a checkmark in the prefs to choose "ignore time code" would be great.

  • Capturing HD TV into Apple TV

I am getting several HD channels via cable using a "Scientific Atlanta" decoder provided my by cable company in Canada (videotron) which has an internal hard drive to record HD TV programs and I plugged it with HDMI cable to my HD TV and it word fine.
I am looking for a way to capture HD programs from this decoder directly into a computer hard drive and burn the program on a blue ray of HD-DVD as a second step.
Would I be able to capture from the decoder into the Apple TV if I connect the two machines with an HDMI cable ? If yes do I need a special software I could install in the Apple TV?
If not what solution can you suggest ?

    Dormoy....
This may or may not help you with your end result....but I have the same type of box.
Our local provider allows us to hook an external HD to the cable box. This in turns allows me to record and keep as much HDTV as I can. I have a 500 GB hooked up to my cable box. I have tried almost everything to get the shows off and onto a DVD but no luck.
Just call your provider to see if they allow external Harddrives......
The External SATA is enabled when the box ships from SciAtl, the cable company can disable it, but most don't as there is no benefit to limiting. To use the sata, you must have a sata1.0 to sata2.0 cable, as a 1.0 cable will not work in the dvr. Once plugged in and powered on the OS will detect the new hdd and ask you if you'd like to format it.

  • Food smashed into MBP USB/Power ports? help!

I had my macbook pro in my backpack and sadly did not have it in a sleeve or anything of the like. There just happened to be a bananna in the backpack as well which somehow mashed it's way into the USB ports and power connector :/ Now they don't work and was hoping someone could give a word of advice on how to best clean it all up. Yes I know it was a dumb move and am only looking for advice on fixing not to be reprimanded for what has happened ;-)
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello,
    You have two options:
    1) DIY repair: http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro
    2) Bring your machine into an Apple Store or authorized repair center for diagnosis and servicing.
Accidental damage is not covered under extended warranty. I would recommend the latter, especially in a case where the 1) extent of damage cannot be assessed and all affected components isolated, as well as 2) The general difficulty of DIY repairs on Retina MBPs. Sorry for the mishap and best of luck.

  • A problem capturing VHS tapes into FCE via Miglia Directors Cut

I am trying to capture vhs recordings via Miglia Directors Cut into FCE. FCE does not seem to be recognising or capturing. The footage will be visible in the capture preview window but when capture is started nothing appears in the main capture window and the preview goes back to No preview available.
The VHS deck is connected to the directors cut via composite cables, and the Directors Cut is connected via firewire to my G5. Does this in itself create a problem?

Use the FCE Easy Setup called *DV-PAL DV Converter* if you are working with PAL video (DV-NTSC DV Converter if you are working with NTSC video).
Also make sure all settings in the Miglia unit are correct for PAL video.
Also, I have found it helpful to have the video running before you click the Capture Now button.
One other thing, the Miglia Directors Cut spec sheet says that it is not compatible with the PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro. I do not understand why this should be unless it has something to do with the unit being powered by the FW bus. Do you happen to have the optional power supply for your unit?

  • Can I capture footage directly into a Mac

Can't seem to find info on how to capture directly from a camera into a Mac using FCP X (10.1). I have a Mac Book Pro and and Imac 27" icore i7. My camera is a Sony NX5U. Is the work flow the same for other camrea's?

I think they have this covered for you.
Just to say that what you want to do  is typically referred to as "live capture".
    Good luck.

  • Why is my captured video split into three?

I have a canon HV40 and First I am not sure if i am even capturing with the right settings. I am shooting in HDV (pf30). when I click easy setup and choose HD and 29.97 I am guessing the best setting that is left to select is the HDV-apple intermediate code 1080i60. The quality seems great and I can capture video
here is the problem and it happens using another capture setting too.
If i capture an hour video it splits it into a 35 and sum min clip then a .7 sec cip and the rest which is usually around 29 and sum min clip. What the heck? this wrecks the video I cant work with a .7 sec clip and paste them all together. is there a way to get it to capture all into one clip that i can work with on the timeline?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Did you capture on external drive? If so, I'm pretty sure that your drive is formated to FAT 32 file allocation table that doesn't support file larger than 4 gig.
HDV is transcoded to Apple Intermediate codec on capturing process in FCE and requires an efty 49 gig/hour for 1080i60 hard drive space.
FAT 32 is not a correct format for video editing works. Try to back up (or recapture) and reformat to Mac OS extended (journaled or not) with disk utility.
