Capturing Video fom Hard Disk Camcorder

Hello, all! First time poster here
I'm trying to capture video from a JVC Everio GZ-MG145AA hard disk camcorder using FCP but to no avail. It is as if FCP is not detecting a device connected.
I'm using Firewire PAL through the Everio dock.
Can anyone help? Tutorials or your own experience will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Josh. I was able to access the camcorder as a removable storage device.
It looks like from this point forward I will have to convert each .mod file into .mov files so FCP can accept it.

  • Hard disk camcorder capture

    Hi all
I am a newbie to this forum!
I am a high school media teacher and one of my students has come to me with JVC hard disk camcorder. We can't seem to capture footage into Final Cut or Imovie through the cable that has been supplied with the camera and there is no input on the camera for a firewire cable. When we open the hard drive of the camera through the computer, there are a lot of "mov" files yet Final Cut will not allow import as it doesn't have an application to open it.
We have just swtiched to Macs from PCs so am a bit of a novice. Has anyone had these issues and know what to do?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers
    Elle

IF it's a hard drive based camera and IF the Mac recognizes it and mounts it on the desktop as a volume, drag the MOV files to the desktop or to your media drive, then use QuickTime Pro to convert the files to whichever format/codec you need in FCP.

  • JVC Hard Disk Camcorder

I just purchased a JVC GZ-MG70U Hard disk camcorder and can't get Final Cut Express HD to recognize this camera in the capture mode useing the USB connection provided by JVC. There is no fire wire for this camera.
Any tips on getting this to work?
    MAC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I think that all DVD and Hard Disk camcorders should provide a prominent warning that they are of lower quality than mini-DV and totally unsuitable for most established video-editing applications.
Is there any chance the shop would accept it for a refund?
You could tell them it was purchased for use in an editing program, and as such is almost useless.
I remember reading the first adverts last year and thinking what a great advance an HD camcorder would be until I read the small print further on that said it was MPEG-2. Many consumers would incorrectly assume that this was synonymous with DV. Most people think that everything digital is the same.

  • What is the most compatible HD Hard Disk camcorder with a mac?

I'm looking to purchase a new High Def, Hard Disk camcorder, but I'm unsure what will be compatible with my Mac? I've read on this messageboard that tons of people have trouble getting these hard disk camcorders to sync with their Macs. I want to buy a Sony, but it seems that they are not very Mac friendly. THANKS!

It's not really an easy question for me to answer, I've gone from a pro DV camera to a consumer HD camera and in many ways I'm a little disappointed, but the comparison is hardly fair.
My hobbies are video and motor sport, so my cameras get quite a challenge and on occasions the HD camera falls short. But as I say it connects well, I have no reason to believe I bought the wrong consumer camera, (just shouldn't have bought a consumer camera) and there are some pretty cool features such as the 100 fps option (except I can't get that stuff off the camera yet)

  • How to transfer video from hard disk to i tune?

how to transfer video from hard disk to i tune? can any one please?? help me also in guiding if  anything else is required to be done to transfer the content to ipad....

Drag it into the open iTunes application window. You may need to use a product such as MPEG Streamclip to convert it to MPEG-4 first.

  • How can I save captured clips to hard disk using the actual video recorded date, not the date I transferred it?

When using Batch capture in AP5.5, the clips are saved to hard disk using the capture date as the Created Date and Modified Date.  How do I configure Premier to use the actual clips recorded date (Meta Data Basic/Date Created) so that I can view them in Windows folders and other applications based on the date the video was recorded, not when I imported it.

AFAIK, there's no way to do that with Premiere Pro.  You can probably find a utility on the Internet that will change the dates for you after the fact.

  • Capture hdv and hard disk

Hi, reading the manual with fce, apple do not recommend using a firewire hard disk. I dont have any other and do not have enough space on my macbook to store on the system drive.
So just wondering if anyone else has had problems capturing hdv onto a firewire external drive? One other thing, since I am using my only available firewire port for the camcorder, the hard drive is hooked up with USB. Its an iomega drive.

Read it here and the same in the manual
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2323
I should have clarified that I meant this in relation to HDV.
"FireWire disk drives are not recommended for capturing high data rate material such as uncompressed SD or HD video."
Now I know its AIC I'm getting but the article mentions that they are good only for DV. I don't know my codecs well enough to know whether HDV (captured via AIC) falls in this category or the non-recommended one or somewhere inbetween.

  • Hard-disk camcorder & DVD camcorder

Can Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express edit footage taken using hard-disk camcorders or DVD camcorders?

Free up your processor by making a very wise investment in an Elgato Turbo 264. It's a thumb drive sized USB device for $100-120 bucks or so. I was angry when I found out that FCP is supposedly the best video editting software on the market, yet can't even recognize a USB camera or the source video copied from the camcorder's hard drive and this after I bought a Sony DCR-SR82 while on vacation. Luckily I had purchased an EYE-TV and the Elgato Turbo. I found that I could open the Elgato Turbo Application and just drag all of the video files from my camcorder onto the application and press Start. That's it. The Elgato Turbo started converting all of the files to Quicktime H.264 format and I could import them (With sound - unlike what the FCP manual says) right into FCP. The Elgato Turbo has it's own processor, so it doesn't slow down the computer.
One very small drawback is that the Elgato Turbo doesn't process your video clips in numerical order. So if you have a lot of clips to convert, do the first few, so that you can start working on them in FCP (Or iMovie, actually) and then dump the rest into the Elgato Turbo. It will chug away on those while you work in FCP without utilizing the computer's processor. I am really glad I found this out, because I am able to work around the shortcomings of FCP and Quicktime without wasting time or my processor time.
When it is all said and done, I still can't Log and Capture video that is streaming from the camcorder, but I don't care now, because this method is unbelievably faster and by converting to H.264 I am not losing any quality, yet I am saving 75% of the HD space on my scratch disk.

  • Capture video from a USB camcorder?

I've happily used iMovie since 2003, but now I have a new Canon Vixia HF S100 camcorder and a new quad-core Mac Pro (and new Snow Leopard). I tried to use iMovie '09 but it drove me up the wall. When I read that iMovie '09 converts 1080p to 1080i (i.e., it throws away every other horizontal line) I bought Final Cut Express 4. Now I'm plowing my way through the manual. I've reached page 175, "Capturing Your Footage to Disk."
When I connect the camcorder to the computer and then in Final Cut Express choose "File > Capture" I get this error message: "Unable to initialize HDV deck. Please make sure a deck is connected and try again." Apparently Final Cut Express isn't communicating with the camcorder. When I connect the camcorder to the computer iPhoto automatically opens, so the camcorder is communicating with the computer. I successfully connected the camcorder to iMovie and downloaded videos. So the problem is with Final Cut Express.
I believe that the problem is that in "Easy Setup" I chose "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60." I chose this because the camcorder's manual says that its Recording System is AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264); and its Television System is 1080/60i.
However, in "Easy Setup" it specifies "Device Control Preset: HDV FireWire NTSC." My camcorder doesn't have FireWire, it has USB. I looked through the User Preferences and System Settings but couldn't find any option for connecting via USB instead of FireWire. I looked at the other Easy Setup options and I only saw FireWire connections, no USB.
Is Final Cut Express unable to communicate with USB camcorders?
I tried using Canon ImageBrowser 6.2.0.1, it downloads photos from the camcorder but I can't get it to download videos. If I could get it to download the videos maybe I could import them into Final Cut Express.
I could download the videos into iMovie and then import them into Final Cut Express, but if iMovie throws away every other horizontal line when it downloads videos this will result in lower quality videos (i.e., that's why I bought Final Cut Express).
    What should I do?

Well the help seemed straightforward, but....
Do I use "capture" to get to view my video on the FCExpress screen, or "Import"?
Whatever I use I just get an image from the inbuilt camera on the mac....not what I am after.
I used to work for Sony and Canon and I can tell you I wrote instructions that were understandable. All I get on my screen with the Final Cut Express is:
Capture Preset must have a video or an audio digitizer set to capture. Please change to desired present in the Audio/ Video Settings.
    <OK>
Well that is not OK since they don't directly send you there to make the changes and after searching for 30 minutes you wonder WHY it should be made such a mystery. WHY not just tell us what to do and lead us there? We are not interested in reprograming like the windows boys - that is why we use APPLE but Apple have left us with the "searching forums" option. You have better things to do with your time rather than write the Apple instructions. But there is NO other option, rather than try combination after combination after combination after combination until you have no more time and look for something which has a chance of success - like stopping the river flowing outside past the house. Managed to do this four times in the last month - why is this easier than connecting the camera to the computer? Because you can see what is going on.
Your help is as ever greatly appreciated and will rescue the Apple from joining the fish;-)

  • Quality of Hard Disk Camcorder versus DV Tape camcorder

Hi. I have a Sony Camcorder that works with DV Tape. I am thinking of buying a new one with internal Hard disk. I saw in the threads that is more difficult to import to I movie from a HD Camcorder, but my question is about quality: How does the quality of the HD Camcorder compare with the quality of the DV Tape? Thanks in advance
    Powerbook G4 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GB RAM

    HD = High definition.
    HDD = Hard disk drive.
The video on a HDD is highly compressed compared to a miniDV tape, so some quality is lost. Then you lose some more when "unpacking" the compressed video for editing.

  • Anyone know how to download video from a JVC HD Hard Disk Camcorder to iMovie?

  • How do I transfer video from a hard disk camcorder to ipad

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Re-capture video to save disk space

I have logged 5 clips, each about 10 min. long.
After editing the clips, I only use about 2 min from each clip.
How do I re-capture, so that I only have the used footage on my disk?
Batch capture takes the whole clip, which I don't want.

    use Media Manager
select the sequence and choose File > Media Manager
then in the MM window choose Media : Copy
check the "Delete unused media from duplicated items" checkbox
if wanted, check the "Use Handles" checkbox and specify the handle length
check the "Duplicate items and place in a new project
click the Browse button and specify a directory to save the new media
    press OK
no recapture necessary, it will create new media from the existing media
check the result of the process very carefully, make sure it is exactly as you expected before you get rid of the orignal media

  • Importing video from hard disk

I have quicktime 7.1.3 and I have .mpg file movies taken from my sony digital cd mavica-they play fine in quicktime but I cannot import them to imovie-
I read somewhere that I need quicktime 6.5 and I need to uninstall quicktime 7.1.3-
true, and how do I do that OR what is a solution for me?
    Thanks!

    Hi Guccigirl:
    Welcome t odiscussions!
QT 6.5.2 with imovie 4 and OS 10.3.9 is often suggested here for those using DV tape cameras. In your case, I don't think it will matter.
You do not have a firewire on your camera so you will have to suffer with the slower USB tansfer.
iMovie does not work with muxed MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 clips (and that's what you're trying to do)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42996
    You'll need:
MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 (free) and the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple).
    http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
Once you do that...these are the steps I once copied from a DCR-SR100 user...(I have not done this myself)
To transfer the data to the IMAC:
1- Plug the USB cable, once detected (5s), press HDD on the touch creen panel
2- Go to Finder (on the Mac) then open the videos folder /MP_ROOT/100PNV01/M2U0001.MPG for example
3- Drag the .MPG file to the mac
4- Start Streamclip (see message further up the discussion)
Export using for example .DV format, readable by I-Movie.
5-Import the new file in I-movie

  • Failure to embed Mp4 video [From hard disk and host]

    Hi guys,
Im Terra - new here and learning DW even more everyday...
But I've come stuck the last few hours, so I could do with a little assitance, thanks in advance...
I've been trying to insert an mp4 file into a div; which is successful. But when I try to preview play it in DW, I get the error code: "Unable to find the plugin that handles this media type. DW looks both in the "Config/plugins" folder, and the plugins folder of each of your browsers." ...When I also try and preview in FF, inside the div, it says "need additional plugins to play" so I continue and let FF look for plugins, FF finds none.
What I ideally like to do, is host the video file from photobucket. Now, I can do this with a simple embed code, but when played from a browser it's played in the default photobucket player which is bundled with a watermark and offering up relative videos at the end, which I would prefer not to see.
    Cheers
