Capturing Video - Problem is I have an MBA with no Firewire

Hi,
I have a MBA and I know that I cannot download my Video using Final Cut, because I do not have a Firewire port (wasn't thinking of video editing and downloading when I got this machine)!
So I am using a PC to capture the Video in an AVI format. Final cut said that I will lose quality, because this isn't the best file format.
Could someone help by letting me know which file format I need to save the capture as, so that I can use final Cut to edit my Videos?
Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum.
FCE uses QuickTime files in specific codecs and frame rates. If you're working with standard-definition footage, your goal should be to get your media to QuickTime using the DV-PAL codec.
Be aware that Apple doesn't support external USB drives for video work, though some users have done so successfully, particularly if the drive isn't very full. The lack of a firewire port on the MBA and new MacBooks really cripples them insofar as video work is concerned, IMHO.

  • Capturing Video Problems

I am using Final Cut Studio 5.1.4 and attempting to capture film from a Sony video camera. I have a 4 to 6 firewire cable connected from the video out of the camera to a firewire port on my dual 1gb power pc. When I open a file in PCP and choose to capture the preview screen opens but says "Preview Disabled".  FCP recognizes the camera as I am able to fast forward, rewind, and stop the camera. When I press capture now I get a notice that there is no video to capture even though the camera is playing video. I tried trashing and re-installing FCP but that did nothing to solve the problem? I have captured video hundreds of times in the past?????

Michael, thank you for your reply.
We have the latest FCP on other computers but need to capture this for someone who only owns the older version of FCP. We are using a Canon XL1s to capture with which is the same camera the project was shot on. We have used the Easy Setup DV NTSC 48 KHZ which in the past has worked with the same camera and film. No matter what I do the log and capture window says preview window disabled. The only window I know of that could cause this is in the log and capture audio window where there is a box which needs to be checked for the log and capture window to be active. It is checked. The log and capture window still recognizes the camera as we can rewind, fast forward, pause, and stop the camera from the log in window controls. When you press capture now with the camera playing video it says there is no video to capture????? Went through the manual several times before posting and the manual fails to address this problem?????

Major backup time regarding your "capture", "USB connection", "no firewire for camcorder".......
Let us start again. Your question was interpreted as one concerning DV data capture into Premiere Elements capture window (requires a firewire connection).
I just dug into the user guide for your camera...instead of a miniDV camcorder, I find a camera that records DVD-VIDEO to a DVD disc. Is that your camera's description? That puts a different complexion to the matter. Please confirm that you are recording to a DVD-VIDEO standard to widescreen on a DVD disc. If not that, then please explain with more details.
If you camera is recording as I now believe, you do not need a firewire or USB connection.
    1. Place the finalized DVD disc in the DVD burner tray of your computer.
    2. If you are working with Premiere Elements 12 Windows, then set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard or Widescreen (or the PAL counterpart, depending on your computer setup), and then, in the Expert workspace of Premiere Elements 12, Add Media/"DVD camera or computer drive", Video Importer.
This process copies (rips) video files (VOBs) of the DVD-VIDEO and allows you to put these video files on the program's Timeline for edits and export.
Please let us know if we are now in sync on what you are seeking.
    Thanks.

  • Video problem I hope you can help with

I have an Intel Mac Pro that has a strange video problem. It can work fine for hours and then for no reason change resolution and size with blurry shadows, making it virtually unreadable and certainly unusable.
Unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in works 95% of the time to get it back.
I have replaced the monitor and all cabling, the person has moved to another location since the problem began, eliminating power possibility.
I have replaced the video card with a hot spare and mounted it in a different slot on the main board.
The problem remains. I took the video card and put it in another machine which has not had an issue.
What else haven't I tried beside replacing the mainboard? What suggestions do you have?

And there is nothing in there to tell us which Mac, video card, monitor, and other facets.
If your Mac really is still using 10.4.11 then it is 1,1 1st generation and limitations on replacing video.
Reset SMC of course, and try a clean install somewhere to test that out.

  • Master collection CS4, how to keep "Date taken" in captured videos?

    Hello,
I have the master collection CS4 on a Vista system, and I can easily capture from my old Canon Elura DV tapes, with a firewire cable, either using Premiere Pro, or the simple Windows capture utility.
Now, no matter what file format I created, both AVI (big) and WMV (smaller) the files' "Date Taken" or "Date Shot" fields are blank. All Date modified/created and accessed are the date of the capture, which I do not really need, since my tapes are 8 years old... !
Windows Photo Gallery sorts your photo and videos by date taken, but this does not seem to be possible with captured DV videos...
Now, it seems such a simple feature to have the DV date/time stamp to be translated into the file "Date Taken" field, I am wondering how to do that.
Is there a plugin? Is there a workflow I am missing in premiere? or AfterEffects?
The date/time stamp is embeddded in the DV stream, and I read that a AVI capture will simply copy the DV stream to the HD, so how do I extract / see that information?
And, really, how come such a critical information is so hard to work with? I mean, don't professional movie makers want to know precisely when video clips have been shot?
    Thank you
    regards

    Hi,
hmm, I use SCLive to capture and the filename becomes the date taken and are numbered sequentially...as it can capture different avi files every time it sees the camera was shut off and turned back on...like those become "scenes" in a way..a new avi file.  But the date and numbers reflect what youre talking about.  I never captured using cs3 which is what I use.  SCLive is actually "better" at capturing mini dv tapes.
As for movie making the slate gives you that info...and when you start the edit you rename the captured footage according to the slate..so the filenames reflect more readily what the stuff is...
    eg. " scene3-take3-cu " or "scene5-take2-master"...etc.

  • FS5600 capture video function not working

My FX5600 VTD 256 VMSi Card does not seem to be able to capture video from my camcorder.  I have updated the capture video drivers still with no luck.  When I called MSI  technical support they gave me a RMA number and told me to send the card back to them for a check.  Before I do that I was hoping somebody may have another idea about the capture video function I may have missed.  I have tried both S video and composite video inputs into the video in connector with no luck.  Before I disable my computer by taking out the video card I was hoping there was some other option I could try.

Post your computer's spec (especially the spec of your PSU). Try latest driver.

  • SCCM 2012 Client and Workstation Audio and Video Problems

    SCCM 2012 SP1 environment.
We have pushed out the SCCM Client successfully to our systems - however we have found that on some computers the SCCM Client is causing an audio/video problem - specifically it appears to be with computers that connect monitors via DVI.  As an example,
on my laptop (Dell e6420, Win7 x64) I have a docking station that connects my laptop to 2 external monitors.  With the SCCM Client installed I cannot listen to music or watch videos - the result is an unusable choppiness/stuttering listening to music
and with a video the audio and video get out of sync.  As well, my mouse no longer functions smoothly - it jumps around.  This happens whether accessing content from a website or simply a local file on my computer.  If I uninstall the SCCM client,
the issue goes away entirely.  I have tried disabling the SMS and Remote control services but doing so does not resolve the issue, only a client uninstall. Note that this only happens when the laptop is on the docking station - with DVI - it doesn't
happen when the laptop is running without an external monitor or if plugged into an HDMI output device.
At first we believed this was limited to this model of laptop in our environment (Win8 or Win7 - both result in the same problem), but now we are hearing about "audio and video issues" on Dell 990 workstations as well.  I believe these stations
have DVI connected monitors.  Driver updates do not appear to resolve the issue.
Has anyone experienced this in their environment?  Note that this happens on imaged workstations and workstations installed from a vanilla Windows 7 or 8 CD.

Try installing the client without Silverlight and see if it helps (this is only used for the Application Catalog).

  • Can RX9800Pro capture video?

    Hello friends,
    I recently purchased a MSI RX9800Pro Plus, and I have a question:
    Can it really capture video?
In their oficial website MSI talks about "Capture pictures and video at up to 30 frames per second."
This card uses an VIA VT1623M for VideoOut. But this chip also ALLOWS Video In.
The card includes a cable for TV-Out S&C Conector, but in the SVideo connector I can see two arrow, each one in different ways (incoming and outcoming).
What's wrong, or what I have to do?
I also would like to ask you other things:
With default cooling I was able to push te card to a maximum of 434/369, is this OK?
Also, as you know, new VGA Silencer are out, what one should I use for the card? 9800Pro model (ATI VGA Silencer 1) or 9800XT model (ATI VGA Silencer 3), I think I should use the Pro's one, but I want someone can confirm it...
Very very thanks in advance and please excuse my english.

    Tony, I disagree...
      Take a look:
      According to MSI´s site (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/vga/vga/pro_vga_detail.php?UID=576):
"• Capture pictures and video at up to 30 frames per second."
And according to VIA´s site (http://www.viatech.com/en/multimedia/vt1623.jsp):
      "Input Format
Supports digital RGB (15/16 or 24-bit) or YCrCb (CCIR601 or CCIR656) 16 bit 4:2:2 input video data in both interlaced and non-interlaced formats".
So, I think that´s it´s only a driver´s matter. The board IS capable of capturing video...
Have you changed your mind yet???

  • I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. Every time I'm importing vedeo using MiniDV HDV Sony camera, FCP X is importing normally, with 2.5 GB of RAM free. Then, after 10 or 15 min of importing, FCP is frozen, and free RAM is close to zero. What happens?

I have 2012 iMac with 4 GB RAM. When I turn FCP X, I usually have 2.5 RAM free and the program works normally when I edit. The issue is importing video. I use a Sony HDV camera to import from miniDV tapes, and Apple says Sony HDVs are supported. Yet every time I'm importing, it works normally for 10-15 min, then the amount of free RAM quickly (yet gradually) is reduced to almost zero (I used Memory Clean to dicover it) and then FCP X got frozen and I need to force quit it and start all over again, to work for another 15 min. Horrible! What is it?

Are using 10.0.7 (the latest version)?
Memory problems seem to have been alleviated with 10.0.6 and 10.0.7.
Please post the screenshots of Activity Monitor, as Tom asked. This will at least let us see if it is FCP X itself gobbling a lot of RAM or if you are suffering from the problem of OS X not releasing "Inactive Memory" in a timely manner - an issue that has been there for a long time :-(
You didn't mention whether you have the 27" or 21.5" iMac. Unfortunately, in the 21.5" adding RAM is a big hassle. But if you have the 27", then seriously consider upping the RAM. It is quite inexpensive, from the likes of Crucial or other reputable third parties.

  • Problem capturing video

I recently contacted Canopus, who manufactures my video capture device (ADVC-100), but they said I have a software issue.
Here is the issue I'm having, if anyone can help:
Every time I attempt to capture video the image (which shows the footage it is capturing) freezes after a few minutes or even sometimes after 30 seconds or so.
I then escape the capture to find that the footage has now eaten up the 40 gigs of my hard drive (leaving only 1.95 left each time), which is not possible considering it's only, at most, a few minutes of video. My computer slows down immensely after this and I have to force quit Final Cut (which takes a very long time) and delete this 40 gig video file from my captured footage folder (which also takes a very long time, I guess because there's so little space left on the
computer and this is a very large file). The file is unreadable; it's supposed to be a video file but I can't actually play it back.
This happens the same way every time:attempt to capture, image freezes after a few minutes or so, have to force quit, then I find an unreadable 40 GIG file in my capture folder.
It did not used to do this. I cannot think of anything I am doing differently now that would have caused this to happen. I definitely have not changed any settings. Maybe an update to FCP caused this??
It used to do this intermittently, say if I converted 20 separate times, it might do it once or twice. Now it does it every time, and at shorter intervals (after a few minutes, whereas before, it used to be maybe after thirty minutes or so).
I recently added an external hard drive to my computer, but I do not write to it. I write directly to my main internal drive. Still, I disconnected the external one and it produced the same results in the same manner.
I've tried simple measures, like restarting the drive, the ADVC-100, etc...but it consistently produces the same problems.
Thanks to anyone that can help.
    Sean

Your problem is most likely because you are capturing to your main drive. This is a definite no-no. Capture to the external drive - providing that it is has a firewire port and not a USB port.
How are you capturing? Capture now? That's my guess since you said that 40gigs of space are taken up on the crash. It is pretty standard for FCP on a Capture Now to reserve some space for itself. And it is quite correct that if it crashes, the file will not be usable because FCP was unable to close the file.
Capture to an external firewire drive. I'll be your problem goes away.
