Capturing Video with iMac?

Hey!
We are somewhat new to mac's. I have an older video camera that stores to tape. The only output is VHS or a yellow RCA connector. With a PC I think I could pick up a cheap video capture card for as cheap as $50.
Is there some sort of similar USB or Firewire external capture card I could plug into the iMac?
Would I use software on the mac to import it with the capture card or the software that comes with the card?
Any help would be appreciated!

Many miniDV cameras have a pass through facility for converting analogue to digital, if you have a friend who has one of these cameras you may end up paying for a few beers for borrowing it rather than $ 50 for a card.
However there are cards and external devices available to you as a mac user if you can't find a willing friend with such a camera.

Hello Cody. I don't think RJ's suggestion will help you with this one.
in imovie hd (iLife 05). anyone ever run into this issue?Everybody does. According to Apple, the iSight built into an iMac G5 (iSight) is not able to capture video into iMovie.

Unable to capture video with MSI StarForce 822 GeForce 3!

I have a MSI StarForce 822 GeForce3 graphics card with 64 MB DDR SDRAM on it. I have VGA Out, as well as TV-out (AV), TV-out (S-video), and TV-in(?) (S-video).
This brings me to two questions:
First, I have NEVER been able to figure out how to use the TV-in (S-video) port. I have tried numerous programs designed to capture video, including the one that came with the graphics card, and none of them recognize the card's TV-in. Do you have any recommendations as to how to use this port to capture video?
Second, in reading through the online manual for the graphics card on the company's website (under the name G3 Pro-VT64D MS-8822), I saw that the card supposedly has the capability of "High-quality HDTV/DVD playback" (8822 v2.0.pdf, page 8 ). However, in playing back DVD's through the card's s-video output onto my HDTV-ready monitor, I definately do not see HD quality videos. Could explain why this is the case?
I have an assignment coming up where I must do some video-editing work, and thus I am posed with a situation where I need to capture video using this card (and I can't afford to buy something new for the moment).

If you have the Video Capture Driver installed then the video capture program should see it. On MSI site version 1.16 of the driver is available for download.
If you still have problems (e.g. too many frames lost) you can try using Virtual VCR (worked best in my case).

Capturing Video with pre-installed WebCam

Okay! I'm really excited because I just downloaded the trial but I want to capture my video with my pre-installed webcam..the ones that are installed on the computer.. i have the hp-pavilion dv2000 with the webcam but every time i choose the capture button on and click webcam it tells me i have no webcam connected.. but the other programs like Windows Movie Maker and the Pinnacle Studio does not do that..help please any suggestions.. Not every webcam will work, sanyg.
Adobe has an approved list, but even many not on the list work.
If yours doesn't, though, it just doesn't. And, unfortunately, I'm not sure of any way to make it work.

Capturing Video with FX-5900XT - Poor Quality of Image - How to improve the capture quality ?

Hello all,
I would to know what is the best sofware to use when you want to capture Video ?
I used MS Movie Maker, and WinDvd Creator but I didn't like very much of the result, the video had noise, the color and the image definition was not good, is there any way to improve it ?
I am using the last drivers from Nvidia. I generated videos in AVI format and MPEG 2.
I have old videos from my JVC VHS, my connection between my cam and the video board is a RCA Cable. When I see the video in my VCR is good but the digital result was not good.
Is there any software filter ?
Is there any tutorial or White Paper about capture using Nvidia driver ?

In any case the quality of the image is very good in a hardcopy.
Does the Nvidia Capture Drive have some adjust ? Sensibility ? Noise ? Color ? Sharpness ?

Capturing video with DV camcorder says "Capture Device Offline"

Just trying to capture video already recorded on my camcorder. The firewire is setup correctly and the options are all right, but the capture window still says "Capture Device Offline".
Somebody help me?!?!?!

Capturing videos with MacBook Pro

I need to know if i can capture videos from a MiniDv handycam direct to my Mac...
the camera is a JVC MiniDv GR - D850.

That camera, like most miniDV cameras, uses FireWire to transfer video to the computer. As long as you have a FireWire port on your machine you should be OK - at least for recoded data.
I note that you say 'direct' in your post. By this do you mean have a live preview on your Mac showing what the camcorder is seeing? That's less likely, but I can't say for sure it will (or won't) work.

How to capture videos with my BB8320 curve

you are mixing two entirely different things.
on one side, you have your device. Its OS needs to be at least 4.5.
=> home screen >> options >> About
I think you still have 4.2.2.
on the other side, you have your PC with the Desktop Manager. It can be 4.3 4.5 4.6 or even 4.7, it won't change anything on what your device can do (video or html email or docs to go)

Can't capture video with FCP 5.1

Hi All,
Here is the case. I'm trying to capture the video from my newly baught Sony HDR FX7. Here are the specs:
I've connected it thru Firewire 400 on the back of my G5.
G5 660GB HD, 5.5Gb RAM
In Easy set up I've selected HDV-1080i60
When I go to file-log and capture, it connects to camcorder and says VTR OK on the bottom of the screen.
When capturing the video (after I've connected to log and capture I push play on camcorder and then click capture now on FCP) I could see on the capture screen and my video running but here an there a green line would cross the film and then it would slow down for a 10th of a second and line would run accouss the capture window again. The type of lines you'd get in the old movie? .
After I've captured all 5 sigments I had on the tape and when I tried to play (I went to file-import-file, I've selected the captured clip from my internal HD where the FCP put the files). The file opened in browser. And then it open in preview window of FCP. At this point the clip that is 1 minute long would play for 2-4 second and end there. The quality of it was also very, very poor (and I filed it at HD 1080i.
So, the quality was really poor. It was the case with all 5 clips I've captured from FX7. All of them 2-4 sec. long and very poor quality.
Now, if I try to play the clip from camcorder and select "in" and "out" points and then batch capture via the same log and capture window, it would tell me that it's "unable to locate timecode, the timecode appears to be missing from the tape. Please verify that tape is timecoded correctly"
So, I was reading this forum and did this:
Tried to go to user preferences and set "on time code brake" select "make new clip"
Nothing helped.
Also it's worth noting. When I push play on camcorder and click capture now, new window comes up and it says on the bottom of it "searching for meadia..." press esc to stop or something like that. May be it's not finding it?
Also, when I first filmed with this camera, I would stop after every clip, turn off the camera, plug it into tv and preview what I've filmed.
Either way, the few seconds of the clips that I"ve got are very bad quality. When I view the clips on my TV and monitore connected thru 3 colored cables, the video was ok, I'd even say good, just too much noice in it. But quality of capture is horrible.
If anyone is readying this, could you please give me some ideas where to go with this. I don't know what to do from here

I have a daughter and she has windows xp with aim.
I have a 24" imac with the built in webcam, isight, with tiger.
We can type to one another, but when I invite for a video conference she can't seem to see me or can't see where to accept. I can see myself in the window.
What are doing wrong. Maybe somebody could add me on there ichat and help me out. Thank you

What version of AIM is she using? If it's the latest, called Triton, it won't work with iChat. She needs AIM version 5.9 instead.
If that's not the problem, it might be something in your set-up.
You might fare better with Skype, which is much easier to set up and has full-screen video.

Is captured video same as with Final Cut

I need to use an iBook G3 to capture some analog video (using Sony's analog/digital) converter. It only has iMovie 3.3 on it. I'll edit the captured video with Final Cut. I'm wondering if the captured video will be the same quality as it would be if I'd captured it with Final Cut Pro?

Hello Steve,
the short answer is yes, however FCP captures differently. With iMovie you get DV stream, meaning you will have to render all the audio in FCP (iMovie also doesn't capture timecode but with analog video this doesn't come to bear).

Capturing video from multiple devices simultaneously using QTKit

       I have three cameras in my iMac，one is iSight(FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)，the other two are USB Camera。And my System version is Mac OS X 10.7.3 (11D2001)，SDKs：Mac OS X 10.7 (11E52)
       My QTKit Capture application uses multiple cameras to capture video with a frame size of 640x480 @ 30 fps simultaneously， but I've found I can only capture with one or two cameras at the same time and it is dependent on different USB port。 Is this a known limitation?
