Capturing with firewire to firewire disk?

I am trying to decide if the new i7 iMac will suffice for FCE editing vs a Mac Pro with multiple internal drives. If I buy a new iMac with only one firewire port can I capture from my firewire video camera using FCE to a firewire external drive as the capture scratch disk? I was thinking I would need a FW hub or daisy chain them. If not I would have to capture to the iMac internal drive and move and reconnect source files to the external drive--which would be a pain.
I like the idea of the 27" screen and saving a few $$ if it will work. Thanks for any advice.

.. but it will limit the entire FW bus to FW100 even if faster devices are connected to it.
Related problems are that some external FW drives don't like running at slower speeds and they hang the bus; or the camcorder grabs control of the bus and doesn't free control to the hard drive when required. ..
even fw100 is more than fast enough for transferring data back'n forth on same 'wire' ..
but I'm familiar with some issues, esp. CANONs have a bad track-record at 'my' consumer-based iMovie boards, acting iffy not being the only one on same fw-controller (controller, not port) ..
no doubt, in a professional environment you should avoid cable-clutter, hubs, etc.
My statement was just meant as: in can work, in some set-ups, as mine...

  • Capturing media on a laptop with only one firewire input

So, this question may or may not belong here: I have a MacBook Pro with its single Firewire port. I have an external firewire drive for my scratch disk. But how do I capture media from my tape-based Canon HV40 onto the external disk with only the one firewire port? Is there such a thing as a firewire Y-adapter (i.e. two into one) or is that even possible? I'm thinking I may have to capture one tape onto the laptop's drive, then disconnect the camera, connect the external drive, drag the files there, and finally, after all is done, let Final Cut know that the scratch disk has been changed and the media is not on the laptop drive any longer but on the external firewire drive. Suggestions welcome, please.

I realize that the slower device on a daisychain will mean that the fastest speed is limited by the speed of the slowest device
My understanding is the speed of the bus will be restricted if you have the SLOWER of the two devices connected directly to the computer. If it is: FW400>FW800>Computer, each device should connect at their normal speed.
In any case, count yourself among the lucky as Canon cams often will not work when connected on the same firewire bus with other devices.

  • Firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized

After last system update, my firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized. Any solutions?
Why does MacOS go backwards... gets worse over time?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! I have had no trouble with any update Apple puts out (the Combo update is what I normally choose). Are you running 9.2 like your specs. say? You are in the Tiger forum, so I'll assume you haven't updated your Macs specs.
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours may be the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

    greetings from berlin

    Greetings,
It appears to be a FW problem, possibly flaky case, or drive problem.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Lacie 2TB Big Disk Extreme   Firewire 800 firewire 400 hi-speed usb2 7200 rpm sku 301201u knocked

    I have a Lacie 2TB Big Disk Extreme + Firewire 800 firewire 400 hi-speed usb2 7200 rpm sku 301201u , which I have been using with an emac ( 1ghz power pc 4 , macos 10.5.8 ) for past few years.
A couple of days ago The drive was hit rather hard on side while on and up , the computer hung as the computer was up on a mac os 10.5.8 partition on this drive . Computer was rebooted and comes up on internal drive, lacie drive just made beep and click sounds ( i am actually deaf and this was what I was told ) every couple of seconds. Attempt was made to boot on CD to use latest available disk utility ( Macos 10.5). Lacie still does not show up. 15-20 minutes into this, I powered lacie down. This is when I started noticing a burned circuitry smell.I powered lacie down and disconnected it at this point.
Most Folks just suggest data recovery which can cost as much as $3000 or more which I really don't have .
I figured I open and examine the internalsof drive . I did so. The circuitry smells
like burned near the point where power comes in and the death diode is located, otherwise circuitry looks fine. One of the two drives , when taken out did not have a burnt smell and the other had a burnt smell towards the center but it dissipated in about an hour after it was taken out. There also was one loose screw inside drives chasing which ended up being one of the 4 screws that holds the disk drive's circuitry. I dont know but I don't think this could have shorted anything out but even though slim it is possible that such happened.
While I have Three DC voltmeters, I could not find the one that would accurately measure the voltage on the external power suppy to see if the output voltage on the 4 pins is accurate . I am still looking for the one meter that can do this.
I figured if I can find the exact drive in like new condition and swap the disks, if the disks are not damaged and if the culprit is actually burnt circuitry, then the drives should come up as they were as though nothing had happened.
I talked to a friend that suggested getting other cases and swapping disks but I guess that is not possible because the two disks are raided? ( raid 0 ) . I am also not even sure if the drives are raided the way they were put into use ( only through firewire 400) as the documentation suggests that only firewire 800 denotes use of built in raid0 but I am not sure. So again assumption is made that the drives are raided .
I contacted dealership of the drive which again suggest that Unfortunately it is not possible to obtain another drive like this one because it has been obsolete and out of manufacture for a long time.  It is also a risky idea because if the problem is not with the drive enclosure hardware, there is a genuine risk of making the recovery process more difficult, or impossible.
This though does not follow logically. I have been able to see the exact drive with the same sku number offered as new or excellent condition more than 1/2 dozen times in the past few weeks so I guess drive can be acquired and tested before any such swap. If drives are not the culprit , I figure after a swap with a new enclosure and everything other than drives, the thing should not even be noticed and all should work as they did before the accident. If the drives are the cause , then the thing has been on 1/2 hour after the accident so the swap should not do any more damage or cause future recovery attempts any more issues than already might be there.
Any sound advice is greatly appreciated.

I tried the two good disks in the main chasis with new cables and power supply , and I could not get them to come on or show.
I put the good disks back  in the second chasis with new cable and power suppy and it again shows ( prompts telling you that it sees a readable MAc OS disk and asks if you want to Initialize it ).
I put the first set together again with new cable and power supply and the light does not come on anymore . being hearing impaired , i put my head on the drive and hear this clicking sound every one or two seconds. The fan operates . The drive does not show when rebooting and it does not show on the disk utility. The drive does not smoke but smell of burned mica ( circuitry ) is still in my throat after a couple of hours.
From what I have learned the possibility exists that each drive is calibrated and the calibration is added to the control board , So like chances are that even if the two original drives are good and connected properly and everything else is good, they might and probably just wont work with a control board of another even exact drive. There are three tables / charts  marked on each drive and specific locations marked on each chart which differ between drives . These I think are from calibrating the drives.
So I guess its data recovery...
Lacie Data Recovery wants $600 ( $300 x  2 drives ) if they recover data without need for a clean room , $3000 ( $1500 x 2 drives )  if there is need for clean room. If they don't recover , you dont pay , if they recover and you do not want to pay, then they just send you the damaged disk ( or perhaps keep it , or smash it then return it to you) .
There are many other data recovery services so I guess a few days to sift through them but I guess the maker reference should be the best way ( I think its actually a sub-company that lacie forwards data recovery to.
Too many factors are involved. One that will such be a secure thing to do or 6 months later  you find out that someone opened 10 accounts under your name , or emptied your bank account ( thats actually not a problem because there is almost never any money in  my bank account) . So security is a concern. I have encountered individuals that make it their business stealing peoples stuff from their disks. Once I even had one Tech guy which was refered to solve a problem I had , copying disks contents right in front of me for absolutely no reason. So I ask him what are you doing, and he says , I am copying everything just to make sure they are safe ( : )  )
Then there is the dalai lama , everything happens for a reason scenario. In which case I guess I have to consider the whole thing as Good Omen. and just forget about it and go on with my life ( maybe I go work in Mc Donalds : )  )
The bottom line is I can't believe that I am such an idiot not to have a proper backup system in place .
Thank you for the links, I will check them out.

  • What to set when capturing to an external firewire drive?

When capturing to an external firewire drive that will also be used to edit the video, what do I need to set in the Scratch Disk window? Just the scratch disk? Do I need to also set the waveform cache? thumbnail cache? autosave vault?
    Thanks.

Depends on your overall configuration/workflow...but I'll usually set my external for Video Capture/Video Render/Audio Render. Then both cache files to my system drive and my Autosave Vault to the external...unless I have an additional internal or second external. I keep my Project files on the system/startup drive.
When you click on the 'Set' button, it's best to simply select the root of whatever drive you want to use. This alleviates the possibility of uncontrolled heirarchy of 'scratch folders' cluttering up your system. If you select the root, then FCP creates a "Capture Scratch" folder at the root level, and each new project gets it's own folder within the main "Capture Scratch" folder.
Setting your autosave vault somewhere other than where your project file is located, can save your butt, if your system drive (or wherever your project file is located) decides to crash.
Others may do it differently, as I do on occasion...just depends on what drives/Mac I have available at the time.
    Hope that helps.

  • External Firewire 800 hard disk kills internet connection

    Hi,
I am having the following problem:
    1. Plug Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB drive into Macbook Pro via Firewire 800
    2. Internet connection dies.  By "dies", I mean I disconnect from the wifi network.  The degree of death varies from complete lack of visibility of the wifi network, to visibility but cannot connect ("connection timeout" when entering the password (which I should not have to enter anyway, as it's cached in my keychain)), to connection but no IP address given by the router via DHCP, to sometimes getting an IP but being unable to ping any other IP address on the network apart from my own.
    3. Ejecting then disconnecting the drive physically, fixes the problem.
    4. Connecting the drive via USB instead of FW800, does not reproduce the problem.
    5. Connecting any my 500GB Lacie rugged drive via FW800 does not produce the problem.
Like the guy in this discussion (http://discussions.apple.com/message/15615649#15615649), this is only happening with my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB drive and only when I connect it via Firewire800.  With any other drive, OR if I connect the Seagate via USB, all is OK.  Note that I'm re-posting this discussion because that other guy accidentally marked the problem as "fixed", but it was never solved.

When the firewire card is not connected, I get the following screen in system profiler:
FireWire Bus: powerbook's built-in FireWire bus
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    OXFORD IDE Device 1:
Manufacturer: OWC Mercury Elite Pro AL

    Mount Point: /Volumes/250 Gb
Notice that the connection speed of the hard disk is 400Mb/s in the first, and 800Mb/s in the second.
The reason I'm fussing about this is because I'm using the hard drive with Pro tools, which officially supports Firewire 800 hard disks with the Oxford 912 chipset (which is what this one's got). And I've had a lot of problems bouncing to disk, even with just a stereo mix (96KHz 24 bit) Where Pro Tools (M-Powered) says that it can't read data from the hard disk fast enough!
I just want the hard disk to run at 800Mb/s and the audio interface to run at 400. Am I asking too much?
Someone must know how to do it.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Can't connect to the internet with airport or firewire

I can't seem to connect to the internet with airport or firewire. I recently restored my old G4 mac mini PPC 1.42 (with airport and bluetooth) Tiger 10.4.8 with a new harddrive. I have it connected to my leopard mac pro, internet sharing is on (both computers), the systems are connected, however, the mini just can't connect to the internet. tried it also using airport, no go. network diagnosis seems to go in a constant loop.

works ok with ethernet connection though.

I have connected 2 macbook pros using firewire in target disk mode and the permissions on the destination macbook pro have changed. Now when I try to start the macbook pro, it stays on the grey screen and the apple sign changes to a prohibitory sign, therefore I cant log in.
    Please help!
    Thanks

I am unable to perform a safe boot, it simply wont happen.
I tried to start from mac osx install disk and that works so I am able to go disk utility, I can run 'verify disk' and 'repair disk' and it shows that everything is ok, however, I cant 'verify disk permissions' or 'repair disk permissions' as both are greyed out because 'the selected disk is not mounted'. I try mounting but that wont work either, I am told to 'disk can not be mounted, run first aid first and then retry'.
Furthermore, I try to perform 'archive and install' so I follow these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
But on number 7, intead of being able to choose volume to install to, there is nothing I can choose! There is no list. And of course I cant continue.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • Charging iPod touch with old AC-Firewire adapter?

    Hello,
I just recently bought an iPod touch, and wanted to know if it will work to charge it with the AC-Firewire adapter from my 2nd gen iPod. I also have the car charger for the 2nd gen. There are posts about doing it with an AC-usb adapter, but I didn't find anything about Firewire.
If no one knows, will it hurt to try it? I just don't want to screw up my new one. Thanks for the help.

Charging the iPod touch with FireWire is not possible.
Plugging it in won't hurt it but it will pop up a message saying that it will not charge.

  • IChat AV doesn't work with M-Audio Firewire audio interface

I saw similar topics to this but none dealing with a Firewire audio interface and none with exactly the same problem.
Every other piece of software I use works with the M-Audio Firewire Solo, except for iChat AV. When it is the selected output device and I start a video chat with someone, I get just horrible, loud static when the person on the other end speaks.
Running 10.4.10 on a Macbook Pro (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).
Does anyone know of incompatibility issues with iChat and Firewire interfaces?

In Audio MIDI Setup (In applications/Utilities) the setting for my Mic is 44100khz 1Ch 16bit.
The Internal Audio connection also shows up at 44100Khz 2Ch 16bit
Are you looking in the same place or in the device itself ?
I would set it in the Audio MIDI Setup and then make sure it responds in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab.
Once the Blue bar moves to at least halfway there I would then check iChat > Preferences > Video Section to see if the green bar under the Vido pics is moving.

I have an 1T Hitachi SATA drive enclosed in a Macally firewire enclosure. If I disconnect the drive the iMac will boot normally with all the other IDE firewire drives attached. I've troubleshot with both Macally and Hitachi, received a replacement enclosure and have an RMA from Hitachi. Before I send the Hitachi back with the possibility of a replacement not fixing the problem, I am asking whether there is a known problem with external SATA drives in particular. TIA. -Dave

    Hi Jessica,
No, the SD slot will not work, you need an ExpressCard/34 slot.
I do not know if it works with cameras, but with two or more HDs, if the first one has two FW ports, you can "daisy chain" one or more additional HDs from it.

  • Possible to charge pb with usb or firewire cable through ipod charger?

    hello,
i forgot to pack my pb charger for my trip. i do have my ipod charger. would it be possible to charge with that by using the firewire to firewire cable or firewire to usb cable? i haven't tried yet for fear of ruining something.
    cheers.
    powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

USB and Firewire - from the Powerbook is one way traffic - ie the PowerBook pumps power out. It doesn't need to take power from a peripheral such as an ipod so it's not set up to do so.
As for "borrrowing" a supply from Apple, you don't know unless you ask. If you're away from home for a month might it be worth getting someone from home to send it to you?
There are local Apple user groups in major cities, so you could page apple users in those cities to see if you can borrrow a power supply.
Or you might have to bite the bulllet and just buy another - either from Apple, ebay or even Criagslist. You might find a slightly cheaper 3rd part adapter somewhere.
Sorry can't help any more. Good luck.

  • Your Recommedations For Capturing With HDV To DVCPro HD

    Hi All,
I am about to start a new wedding project and I am using my LHe Kona for the first time to capture for output to a dvd. I want to know your best settings for capturing with LHe in FCP with my Z1 Sony? I will be capturing in 1080i and I would like to know which DVCPRO HD format to use with the best DVD end result. I have a totally new Caldigit Duo 500 GB raid as a scratch disk the can capture up to 140 mbs as most of you already know. Your help would be appreciated

If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to choose the Kona LH's "easy setup" for capturing DVCPROHD with the frame rate you've shot... then make HD or SD DVD's from the resulting sequence... Might have to change your device control to firewire, but it should work just fine.
