Car charger in Europe for US bought iPod 3g

I bought an iPod Touch 3g in the US. Then I moved to Germany. I bought a Belkin Micro USB Car Charger in Germany, but my US-bought iPod touch 3g does not charge from it, using the USB-dock cable that came with the iPod touch. When I returned the Belkin charger (to the chain electronics store) the salesman told me that NO charger bought in Europe will work with the US bought iPod 3g. Is this for real, or is he full of $%^&*? I can charge from my laptop USB connector, and from a Wii USB port. Why can I not charge from a USB car adapter? Can someone suggest a product I can buy in Europe for my car lighter socket? Thanks!

That is not true. First of all, the iPod Touch requires the standard USB voltage to charge (that's approximately 5v), and at (I think) 500mA. mA is the current, or the speed that the electricity moves along the wire. That's the same, whether the iPod was purchased in the USA, the European Union, or Japan (in fact, anywhere)
the salesman told me that _NO charger_ bought in Europe ...
"A charger" could mean any one of several different types, so if that's what the saleman actually said, he was playing with words. He still wasn't correct though:
1. wall charger; transforms the "local" voltage into USB voltage. The "local" voltage in the USA is 120 volts, in Europe it's (mainly) 220 volts.
2. USB port on a computer; it will be 5 volts, but some USB ports (keyboard ones especially) do not provide a high enough current and therefore will not charge an iPod.
3. *"Car chargers for iPods";* a device that plugs into the car's "cigarette lighter" outlet (or now sometimes called the "12 volt out socket" or similar). Car battery voltage is 12 volts, so the "car charger" has to change that to 5 volts. But it also has to provide 500mA.
So what were you sold? The pictures and description of the three Belkin Micro USB Car Chargers that I've seen (on the Belkin website) look as though they should all do the job, but there is no technical information to confirm that for two of them. So what was the problem? I don't know, was the device you had in two parts, a "plug" that fitted into the car socket and a cable that plugged into the "plug"? If not, and it was a one piece device with the cable coming directly out of the device, perhaps it was a firewire charger. If so, that is the problem.
Older iPods charged through "firewire" or USB, but newer iPods do not (and cannot) use the firewire charging voltage. Firewire voltage is 12 volts and there have been plenty of "chargers" which were "designed" for iPods but used only the firewire output. So they work with older iPods, but not newer ones and definitely not with the Touch.
Wow! I realise that's a bit long-winded, but the fact is, you can buy a charger to charge your iPod Touch from the car socket. But it must be a USB one that provides 5 volts and at least 500mA. If it only provides 300mA, it will not work. Try another shop.

Can iPhone car charger be used for new iPad?

Probably not. The iPhone charger is 5W whereas the iPad requires a 10W charger. The iPhone car charger will probable charge the iPad, but very slowly.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

  • "Universal Laptop DC car charger power adapter" for Lenovo g530

Hey there,  I'm a complete tech numskull, so pardon me if this is incredibly naive.  I recently made an impulse buy of an off-brand "Universal Laptop DC car charger power adapter" with the hopes of using it in a car with my Lenovo G530.  I haven't gotten it yet but after purchasing it, I noticed the power adapter that came with my Lenovo  is "AC."  Is it possible to us the DC adapter with my laptop, where my cord says "AC"?  I obviously don't want to fry my laptop and was wondering what I should look out for.  The adapter was pretty cheap, which is another red flag but it also means I won't be out much if I made a mistake in buying it (ebay purchase).
Thanks in advance for your input.

It seems the spare is the new specs. Check these 2 spares. They are the same 4.74amp. http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-3000-G530-444638U-Adapter/dp/B002Z209G6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronic... http://www.amazon.com/COMPUTER-Power-Adapter-Cord-LENOVO/dp/B002MY2MLM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electron...

  • Can I use my standard car charger i got for iphone 4 with iPhone 5? if I just plug in the usb to lightning cable or will it damage the new iphone?

The charger takes a usb cable, so I figure I could just plug in my usb to lightning cable and charge using my Saitek charger.  Does anyone know if this works?

Did you get this to work?  Mine did not work when I plugged it into my at&t iphone car charger usb port.

There are some cradles available to just plug in but they are not made by Nokia and there is quality issues. I would best advise you to upgrade you car kit to a new ck-7w, so you can guarentee compatability and make full use of you 6230i features, this kit will be easily upgraded next time you change phones so is a good investment.

  • Specifications for Car Charger

I bought a USB Car Charger long before I got my Ipod, I now decided to try it out, but I just get the Ipod to power on, that means it recognizes that something is plugged in, but it doesn't recharge.
The Car Charger has an output of 5.0V and could reach up to 400mA.
Is the problem that it's not enough powerfull?
    Thanks

Same question... what does the output need to be. Any suggestions for a car USB adaptor that is good to buy (I want the USB adaptor, not the dock adaptor for the car).
    Thanks,

  • Can ipod car charger charge an iphone 3G s?

    Hi,
I have a 2nd Gen (5 year old) iPod but the car charger i use for it i purchased just over a year ago. Can i use this charger to charge my iphone or will this hurt the iphone? Thanks!

If it is a USB charger it will probably work. If it is Firewire it won't do any harm, but it won't work. You will get a message on the phone saying that the charger is not compatible.
The nice thing about USB is that it is utterly standard; there are no voltage variations (as there are with Firewire); the charger will supply 5 v +- 0.5 v at 0.5 to 1 Amp. Period. It will also optionally supply a signal that the device can detect to verify that the current is sufficient to charge the device. The iPhone looks for this signal and will also alert you if the charger cannot charge the phone. So you can do no harm trying it. Worst that will happen is that it won't charge the phone.

  • HT1665 does apple have a car charger for iphone 5?

does apple sell a car charger or car charger with mount for the Iphone 5?

Interesting, I have learned that many folks have never heard of a "Cigarette Lighter", it is something like a 12 Volt accessory port.  In any case, I purchased a Belkin 2.1 amp single USB port charger and just tried it with my standard USB to Lightning IPhone 5 cable and it worked great.

Also, there is no battery percentage. The battery drains quicker than in iOS 6. The high power consumption may be fixed in the next update.

  • Ipod / iPhone car charger

What is the difference (if any) between the iPod & iPhone car charger?
When I plug my iPod car charger into my iPhone the alert +'This accessory is not made to work with iPhone. Do you want to turn on Airplane Mode?+
I have not tried to actually connect it to the car charger as yet and would appreciate any ideas or experience of same.

You can safely ignore that message (and not use Airplane Mode). It just means the accessory is not shielded against cell phone signals (i.e. you may get some static on your car radio).

  • FM Transmitter/Car Charger Compatibility

Apple Store item description indicates Monster iCarPlay 200 is compatible with 3rd Gen Nano. Purchased...didn't work on my iPOD, but did work on neighbors older gen. iPOD. Talked to Monster Technical and they said iCarPlay 200 was not compatible with 3rd Gen iPOD and that they had no other transmitters that were compatible. Can someone confirm that they have an FM Transmitter/Car Charger that is compatible with a iPOD Nano 8gb 3rd Gen. Obviously, I am a bit reluctant to trust Apple Store descriptions indicating compatibility.

  • Error Message when using car charger

    Hi
I just recently purchased my iPhone 4. When I am trying to charge it using my Apple car charger and cable, I get that error message so many others are getting when trying to charge from their computer. I use an USB port from back of computer, so I don't have a problem that way.
My problem is with the car charger and cable. Error: "The device is incompatible for charging".....or similar wording. This is terrible because the battery is used up so fast, I need to keep it charging while driving.  Even if I buy the real expensive charger for $25, there are complaints about the same error.
Apple has got to be aware of this problem. Since my iPhone 4 is new, it doesn't appear to be any dust at the connection. For the money I paid, I am feeling really bad about this.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cissy Brazil

Hi Deggie. My mistake. I got the car charger from Amazon which is supposed to work with iPhone and my iPod Touch. The cable that came with it does fit the iphone. However, since I have the cable that came new with my iPhone 4, I will try switching the cable and see what happens.
At the Apple store, a car charger is available for purchases of $25, but like I mentioned, when reading the reviews, most people gave a one star because of that error message that users are getting.
I'll try my cable that came with my iPhone and see if it works, then get back here
**forgot to mention that I've had the charger for about a month, but had used it until a few days ago **
    thank you!
    Cissy
