Car charging - using old iPod hands free

For my iPod, I bought a Belkin (or maybe Griffin) cable that made a wireless connection to my FM car radio. It worked OK - that's another subject.
Can I use this to: 1) charge my iPhone? and 2) play my iPhone (as an iPod) through my car radio?
I don't want to damage my iPhone, so I have not experimented.

It's impossible to answer without knowing precisely which model you have...
You should verify the manufacturer of the device, and then check with them on compatability with iPhone... Some good external (third party) resources are:

  • Car Charger, Radio Transmitter and hands free device for IPHONE

Is there a device that I can purchase that will allow me to charge my IPHONE, listen to music stored on my IPHONE thru the car radio and also all me to use the phone feature hands free? If so, where can I purchase it?

I wish I had a product to point you to (and am still a little baffled that Apple didn't include voice activiation) but I think your best bet is to look at various audio systems, zero in on the best candidates, and make a check list of specific connectivity features you're looking for.
There are many after market audio systems which have MP3 input capability or an iPod adapter that you can use to play tunes off of your iPhone. These units usually do not allow much iPod playlist navigation (i.e., you need to find what you want to listen to on your iPod/iPhone before you start driving).
These after market systems also have Bluetooth hands-free integration. To an extent, they will work with any Bluetooth enabled phone, but the extent of how well they work is mixed bag unless the iPhone is specifically listed as one of the phones it supports. For example, with your iPhone paired to a third car audio unit, when your iPhone receives an incoming call, the music will fade down and you will hear your phone ringing through the car. You will then be able to answer the phone and hear the caller. Whether or not they will be able to hear you is anyone's guess with the audio unit's generic Bluetooth phone driver. With a third party audio unit which lists the iPhone as one of the phone it supports for hands-fee use, you will be able to speak to and hear an incoming caller. You may be able to program some of your most frequently dialed numbers into your audio system and dial out via your audio system, but you may not be able to upload all of your contacts; and even if you can, you need to make sure that you can dial those entries with speach recognition in your audio unit because it is not available in the iPhone.
Check out JVC. I think they have an in-dash navigation unit that supports the iPhone. Again, you need to specifically find out from JVC the extend you can dial with speech recognition or with uploaded contacts.
If anyone knows of any systems which are fully integrated (i.e, will upload contacts and provide speech recognition for dialing), please post it.

  • Using old ipod accessories

Hello. I've had an ipod mini in the past and I got the 2nd gen touch for this christmas. I had to get the new adapter since I had the FireWire adapter, didn't know they took that way!
I have a griffin fm transmitter and the touch is a little too big to plug in, and doesn't support the touch. Is there an accessory to get in order to use the transmitter instead of buying a whole new one? I have yet to try out my car charger and I'm afraid that wont work either.
Any advice/help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hmmm... This adapter costs as much as a new transmitter/power adapter!
I have a griffin transmitter/power adapter. It works fine with my new iPod touch,
except that it won't charge it. The transmitter works fine. This is because up
through the iPod Touch G1, the iPods used the Firewire charging circuit.
The iPT G2 doesn't so old chargers won't work.
If you cut the shield off the iPod mini charger/transmitter that fits around
the bottom of the iPod mini, it would transmit fine, it just wouldn't charge.
    Jim.

Hi there, did u ever figure this out? After all my searching you're the nearest match. I can only find software that allows you to send SMS from your PDA (bluetoothed to your mobile). have also found some Dialer software but that just dials your phone from your PDA and that' it.
I'll dig the links out if you're interested? let me know if you get the handsfree sussed out.
    cheers

I saw this kind of software yesterday on a car navigator myguide 3300 and it was pretty cool and I want to find something like that fot PDA too.

  • Car charger freezing my ipod

whenever i plug my 3rd gen ipod into the car charger it freezes. I have to let the battery completely die out and then it works fine. Its not the charger because my sister used it with her 4th gen ipod and has had no problems. Has anybody had this problem and solved it or not solved it? i'm out of the warranty period so that's no longer an option but this is an issue i've had since the beginning.

I'm having this problem with a Belkin car charger. I thought it was the charger until I stumbled across your post. Anyone else having this problem? When I had a Monster iPod FM transmitter/charger, I didn't have this problem. Strange..

  • Using old iPod Video games on new iPod Classic?

    Hi all-
I bought several games for my old iPod Video (don't know what generation it was but it was about two years old). These games include Mini Golf and Zuma. My old iPod broke, so I recently purchased an iPod Classic. When I connected it to sync to my computer, these two games and iQuiz did not show up in the games tab of the iPod sync list. I have read things about older iPod games not working on newer models, but these games are still available from the iTunes store and are said to be compatible with the Classic. So my questions are:
    1. Why do my older iPod games not work with my new iPod, though the same games are still available to be bought in iTunes and are said to be compatible?
    2. Is there something I could do to make them appear in the sync list?
    3. If I were to buy these games again from the iTunes store, would they work on my new iPod? Is there some kind of update that happened to them that render the old versions useless on my new iPod?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Why do my older iPod games not work with my new iPod, though the same games are still available to be bought in iTunes and are said to be compatible?
The earlier releases of the games were not designed to be forward compatible to a newer iPod that hadn't been designed at the time they were written. The new versions currently available in the store are explicty designed to work on both the 5th & 6th gen. iPods and 3rd & 4th gen. nanos. They won't work on the iPod Touch or iPhone should you ever get one.
    2. Is there something I could do to make them appear in the sync list?
    No.
    3. If I were to buy these games again from the iTunes store, would they work on my new iPod?
    Yes.
Is there some kind of update that happened to them that render the old versions useless on my new iPod?
Yes, the iPod got updated making it incompatible will the older versions of the games.

  • Can i use old ipod adapter to plug to charge ipod touch?

    hey
i was wondering if you can use the old version of the ipod charger ( the one that plugs into the wall socket ) to charge the ipod touch?

I doesn't need a dock. I use the "Music Power Duet USB AC Charger"
    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5750794
With the standard USB/iPod touch cable. Works great (and charges fast). I use it instead of my computer to charge my iPod.
I'd like to use my Noma Pocket Power Charger, RX4 which I take on plane trips.

Unfortunately the battery on my iPod touch when watching movies on it lasts so long on plane trips that I haven't needed it

  • Trying to use old iPod as backup volume but it isn't recognized.

    Hello.
I am trying to use a 20GB iPod (generation 1) as the backup volume for Time Machine. I assume that I can designate which parts of my system for Time Machine to backup, such that the size of the iPod in relation to the size of my hard drive wouldn't matter.
I have enabled disk use on the iPod and stripped all the old files from it, but it does not appear in the Time Machine list.
Any help on how I can fix this? Perhaps a formatting issue?
    Thanks.

"Just keep in mind that it may void warranties."
Meaning for the iPod? I've had it for five years. I'm pretty sure it is worthless and uncovered by any warranty.
On the other hand, if you mean it might damage my computer somehow and void its coverage in the process, I will reconsider this option.
Thanks so much for your help.

  • IPad charger used for iPod Touch, now won't charge iPad

Hello everyone! I need help. :( This is what happened. i charged my iPod Touch with the charger that came with my iPad 2 and the iPod charged okay. Now I connected the charger to my iPad and there was no response at all (no charging or not charging sign).
This is the second time this happened. The first time was when my aunt used the iPad charger for her iPhone 4 which charged okay. When I used it for my iPad after, it did not work as in now. What I did the first time was connect the charger's detachable head (see image http://www.thefonestuff.com/product_images/c/441/MB706_AV1__57136_zoom.jpg) to a Macbook charger. The Macbook charged okay and when I reconnected it to my iPad, the iPad began to charge as usual.
I don't understand what happened. Was the charger somewhat "inactivated" in both instances because it was connected to a device that required a different amount of power? Without the Macbook charger, how can I "restore" the charger to its "iPad-optimized" state?
    Thank you for your reply!

    Icedgreco-
Changing the detachable head and changing it back, might wiggle an internal connection that is loose inside either the charger or the head.
It is also possible your charger cable has a bad connection.  Either way, I think you need to contact Apple about it.

  • Using old iPod/iTunes with new computer.

My hard drive on a previous computer has recently bitten the dust. I had my iPod synced automatically to that library.
Now when I attempt to add to my iPod (new songs/playlists) from the new computer, I'm told it's synced to an old library and, basically, the only option I have is to wipe it and start with the new library.
Is there a way around this as what's on my iPod now is fairly irreplaceable?
Kicking myself for not backing up and eternally grateful for any help.
    Thanks!

Yeah, there is a programme called YamiPod that lets you sync the contents from your iPod to iTunes. Here's the link...

  • My Sony clock radio has iPod support. It played and charged my old iPod touch 2g. I got a 4g today and it will only play music on the dock, but it won't charge.

    It's all in the title

Try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
if still problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
I suspect you have a hardware problem.
