Car GPS Units and their Software

Hello,
I am in the market for an entry level car GPS system and I am shopping aroound at everything from Garmin to TomTom to the more unknown companies like Mio and Navigon. One of the critical elements of the GPS that I cannot really find any information online for any of the devices is the software that you have to load up onto your computer for updates.
Does anyone in the community have experience they could share in using GPS software that comes with your GPS? What works, what doesn't? I see online that Garmin and TomTom have Mac support. How is that support really though?
Does anyone have aany experience with any off beat brands? Mio for instance seems to be a fairly popular off brand of GPS devices, however I cannot find anywhere whether or not their installation software can run on a Mac or not. Any feedback would be great.

Many GPS units require an old style serial RS-232 connector which is pretty antiquated. A few probably have been updated to USB. Keyspan offers RS-232 compatibility with Mac OS X and its adapter to USB. These companies make Mac OS X compatible GPS software and hardware:
RoadNav, RouteBuddy, GPS Connect, GPS NavX, MacGPS Pro, GPSY, Hiketech, Route 66 (mapping software that ties into GPS units).
And there is the
Macmap usergroup on Yahoo (no affiliation with Macmaps*, and was discovered long after I created the Macmaps domain)
- * Macmaps is my own personal website which I may get compensation from.

  • HT5290 I am trying to download Navman's 'Navdisk' software for my new car GPS unit.

When I go to the Navman website and click on the download icon, the download starts in the dock but when it completes the application is not there?
If I manage to click the downloaded application before it dissapears my Mac says it can't open the application because it cannot be found.
I have had this same problem when trying to download Brother printer software/drivers.
Can anyone help, as I am stumped as to what to do to update my new Navman GPS?
    Thanks pfgchippy

    Hello pfgchippy,
If the files downloaded are in a .zip format, they may be automatically opened after downloading. The contained files would be located in your Downloads folder.

  • How to copy the  positions and their relationships of one org.unit to other

f there about 20 organization units among which 6 org.units have same positions and same relationships ,i know that we can create one org.units and their relationships among 6 similar org.units and then copy the same position and relationships to other 5 org.units as well instead of individually creating positions and assigning relationships to them  which results in wasting a quality time.but i dont know how to copy it? so please help me by informing me in details how to copy the positions n their relationships to other org units.

    Hi.
This may sound like a bit of a pain in the *** but why not save the channel strip settings into your own folder then that way you can open them up in other songs and you have some channel strips to try out when you cant find anything else to fit. Plus its fun to open up lots of different audio onto the tracks and see what the effects sound like, Brian Eno style.....
    Hope this helps

  • GPS Unit For Macs

I have googled "GPS for Mac Laptop" and found some thing that look like they might work but I really am not sure I take their word. Has anyone ever bought a GPS Unit for their laptop that works for a Mac? And I really don't want to use Bootcamp. So if anyone can help me that would be great!

People are seeing this, but keep in mind that the posters here are regular Mac users like yourself. Apple itself doesn't post here. It is quite possible that no one has done what you're asking, and that's why there haven't been any replies. I can tell you, however, that I recently purchased a TomTom One (version 3), and it updates just fine on my MacBook. I don't think that's what you were asking, however.

  • IPhoto 09, Nikon D90 Camera and GP1 GPS unit

I own a Nikon D90 camera, and have just ordered a Nikon GP 1 GPS unit to use with it. I was wondering if there was anybody in the forum with this setup already, and what experience they are having using it with iPhoto 09. I have written Nikon, and am going to write Apple, with this question, but was hoping there might be somebody that already had the answer and experience in the forum. Any help would be appreciated, thank you, Jim C.
    Dual 1 Gig G4, 2 X500 Gig HD, 1.5 Gig Memory Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I am using Jobo photoGPS ( alias Geotate Kato) together with Canon EOS450D with to my great satisfaction.
It works with any camera having a flash-shoe; very small unut, excellent battery life.
Raw GPS data is recorded; you need a PC(now on the mac too) to match photos and GPS-data which is then written into EXIF. Diffferent from other units, the clock on this one does not need to be exactly synchronised with the camera.
Importing these photos into iPhoto'09 works without any problems: they are automatically placed in the correct location.
On the other hand, I have enormous problems with loading the maps; they're loade only partly, extremely slowly or not at all. The longer I work in iPhoto, the worse it gets up to complete blocking.
Looks to me very much like a memory-leak. I already contacted Apple: no response.
Restating the Mac temporarily solves/betters the problem.
    Any clues?

I would only mention that your definition is incomplete for this -
Contextual selector A type of Style Sheet Selector that
and that it's most often referred to now as a Descendent selector, not a contextual selector.  It's basically the same as the Compound selector that you have already defined....

I downloaded a cheap PDF editor and it converted all my PDFs to their software. Then when I deleted it, I cannot open them in the Adobe format any longer. Please let me know how to get them back!

It's important to understand that when this sort of thing happens files aren't "converted" at all.
In Windows and Mac, there is just one app (program) that it run when you double click a type of file. There's an app for Word documents (Microsoft Word). There's an app for PDF files. So all that happened is that you installed an app which can open PDF files.
Nothing changed in the files. You can still open them the traditional way if you forget double click - start the app, use Open from the File menu.

  • Car kit with GPS booster AND FM transmitter???

Does anyone know if there is a car kit that has both a GPS booster and a FM radio transmitter? Our cars don't have auxiliary audio inputs so we wouldn't be able to play itunes through the radio with the Tom Tom car kit. I'd really like a car kit that does everything (ie GPS booster, FM transmitter, handsfree calls, charger).
    Thanks
Sorry... should have said I'm looking for something to work with iphone4

  • Like all other software companies, Mozilla is becoming complacent and their products antiquated.

A pervasive problem within the software world is a complacency in which they take no regard for the concerns of their customers while having neither incentive nor motivation to correct basic issues with their product. Take the issue with Firefox freezing up. Customers write to Mozilla with a concern about the Firefox problem, Mozilla’s response is to shift the blame to Flash. After contacting Flash, we discover they have shifted the blame to individual web sites. When addressing these concerns with a favorite web site, they blame either Firefox or Flash. Nobody accepts responsibility, nobody attempts to correct the problem, and Mozilla never takes the initiative to collaborate with Flash to ensure their product is top notch. Further, these companies do not even attempt to address the problem on their end and will never admit to having an issue with their product. The result is that I download Maxthon, Chrome, or some other browser.
But Mozilla and Flash are not alone. iTunes is now a terrible product and the new iOS has several issues with no attempt on Apple’s part to fix the issues and Windows 8 is a ridiculous operating system designed for computer incompetent individuals. Instead of correcting software problems, these companies repeat the mantra that the issue is on the part of the customer and not with the software. While blaming the victim may be reasonable to a marketing rep, it alienates the victim and makes them eventually loath the company laying blame upon the customer’s doorstep.

'''''Mozilla is becoming complacent and their products antiquated.'''''
    Antiquated? Surely you jest!
Most users who come here to complain about Firefox, express their outrage that something they loved in Firefox '''''was changed!'''''
As far as initiative regarding Flash, Mozilla is working hard on '''eliminating''' the need for Flash altogether!

  • ZEN X-Fi3 and Kenwood in car head unit.

    Hi,
Will the ZEN X-Fi3 work and play nicely with my Kenwood in car head unit?
My old Zen MicroPhoto played over aux-in, but refused to do anything over USB.
Have things moved on, will new Zen devices operate over USB, thereby giving full device control through the Kenwood head unit?
    Thank you.

    Hello FantasticPlace,
Base from the knowledge base article, it's possible.
    5. USB car stereo connection:
These connections will only read your player through "removable drive". In this case, the USB port would apply only for Mass Storage Class (MSC) players such as a ZEN X-Fi3, ZEN X-Fi2, ZEN Style M300/M100, ZEN X-Fi Style, ZEN Style.
Here's the link to the article. By the way, welcome to the forums!

  • When I purchase a Car GPS are these units ready to go out of the box (once charged)?

I would like to know when I purchase a car GPS system (Garmin or Tomtom) if they are ready to be used out of the box, once they are charged ?
Or do they require any additional programming, map installations or logins?

    Hi Eveready,
Yes, it's pretty much ready to go. Plug it into the cigarette lighter. I would recommend that you update the maps as soon after purchase as possible, while it's still free from whichever brand you bought.
Good luck and you won't get lost ever again!

  • I have an Iphone 6 plus. Can the bluetooth connect to the cars speaker system and a Garmin HUD unit at the same time?

I have an Iphone 6 plus. Can the bluetooth connect to the cars speaker system and a Garmin HUD unit at the same time?

    Hi,
Normally yes, Bluetooth can connect to multiple devices at the same time, so yes.
The only thing is that you'll be able to send sound/music to only one at a time, but I understand the Garmin HUD doesn't play sounds.
    cheers
