Carbon Copy Everything or Install a New OSX?

Hi All,
I'm upgrading my MBP's hard disk. I would rather just copy my current hard disk (using CCC) to the new one. However, I'm curious if installing a clean OSX to the new hard disk and then copying all my settings, files and applications would provide faster boot up times, processing etc.
Thanks.

IMO, a straight clone is sufficient. However, you can always do the other, check it out, erase it, do the clone, and make your decision. I haven't reinstalled, except when beta-testing various OS incarnations, since installing Jaguar. All of my normal OSs are updates, based on clones.

I am keep getting this error "The disk is used for Time Machine Backup" when installing the new OSX Mountain Lion" when doing the upgrade to newly OS.

The folder would be at the root of your hard drive. Double-click Macintosh HD and look there.
If it isn’t there, I’m not sure what it is seeing.

Does anyone know the YAHOO authentication method and port? I recently installed the new OSX 10.8.2 software and my mac mail wont work.

    Hello,
I have no idea what you're talking about, however my Mail stopped working when I
had to add a new e-mail address for my Hotmail account.
My new Hotmail address works, and seems to get e-mail from the old e-mail address,
which from I've read behaves as a "default" address for the old address.
Apple Mail is linked to my Hotmail account of the old e-mail address.
I no longer know my old password.
Apple Mail will not accept my new password for ny new Hotmail account.
Can someone help me solve this problem WITOUT COMPLICATED SOLUTION!
As I said I have no idea what a port, or SSL or authentication is!
If you do answer, please answer in vert simple steps that are easy to follow, and donlt make matters worse.
    Thanks,

  • How do I go about saving ALL data on an imac running 10.5.8 and wipe the harddrive and install an new OSX

I have an old imac running OSX 10.5.8 which for various reasons was never updated further
Processor is 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    It has iphoto 08 7.1.5 (378)
I also have a macbook Pro.  Running OSX 10.7.5
    Processor 2.4 GHz intelCore i5
    memory 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
    This one runs iphoto 11 v 9.2.3 (629.52)
On Both these Machines I want to save all the files  and particularly the photos to an external hard drive.   I can do the files etc but having problems with iphoto.  I want a complete functional copy of both libraries in iphoto and I want to be able to access it and pick and choose which ones I want to use  but not STORE on a new Macbook.  I want to access the photos from several machines and just browse through them.
Then ..  once I have a proper copy of everything  I want to reformat the old imac and install the newest OSX it will run given its Processor etc.    any advice on which OSX it can cope with?
Also possibly upgrade the  macbook pro , so that they talk to each other properly, will access icloud and will also both be compatible with a new macbook pro running Yosimite...
But I want to be able to pick and choose which files I move to the new macbook. Both photos and general filing.
This may be easy for an expert but I am not an expert, I am reasonably competent.. but definitely not an expert and I don't want to mess up and lose stuff.
    can anyone help?

  • I have recently installed the new OSX Lion on my 2009 MacBook. Now I cannot get access to my Windows-Partition, which is on the harddisk. I cannot choose to boot from LION OSX or Windows. Who can help?

I have recently upgraded my MacBook to OSX Lion. Now I cannot get access to my windows-partition. I cannot choose booting from OSX Lion or Windows. Who can help???

I believe that Lion and Mountian Lion use BootCamp 4.0 and earlier versions used 3.0. I don't use BootCamp but from reading The link below you need to get new drivers, burn a cd and install. Check out #20 on this page.

  • Installing a new hard drive--can I use target drive?

I'm about to put a new hard drive in my Pismo, and I'd like to do it this way:
    a) back up my current hard drive to a G5 iMac using Ethernet and Carbon Copy Cloner
    b) install the new hard drive in the Pismo
    c) move the old data back to the new drive by setting the new drive as a "target" drive and using CCC to transfer the data back via Ethernet.
Am I missing anything? And in step C, will I have to/can I format the new drive using the iMac and Ethernet?
Any suggestions and/or cautions would be appreciated.
    Pismo 500 MHz, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You need to use a FireWire cable and FireWire Target Disk mode to do what you describe. Mac OS X cannot be installed over an Ethernet connection unless one of the two machines is running Mac OS X Server or there is a Mac OS X installation on the target computer in addition to the one you will be cloning. The cloning operation will not erase the destination drive, so it may need to be reformatted first; a Mac OS X installation can only exist on a disk which is formatted as Mac OS Extended or UNIX filesystem, and UFS should only be used if you have a specific reason to do so.

  • Installing a new hard drive (hard disk)

Hi. I'm planning to install a new hard drive to my computer. Does anyone know how to install a new HD? Or does anyone know a link or anything? I also need to know if I should back up my original hard drive
    Thanks,
    Frisbo

    Hi, Frisbo -
Sorry - meant to address the backing-up issue in my previous post.
In the grand scheme of things working as intended, there should be no reason to have to back up your existing drive before adding a second drive - other than a hardware disaster or a formatting error (picking the wrong drive to initialize), there is little chance the data on the exisiting drive would be affected.
The operative phrase is 'working as intended'. That is why good practice includes maintaining a reasonably current backup of the important (can't afford to lose 'em) files on a drive at all times - things do happen, sometimes bad things or even catastrophies, without warning.
Backing up files was easier in OS 9 and earlier than it is with OSX, although backing up data files is still relatively easy - it is backing up the OS that has become less easy.
Unlike with OS 9, OSX can not be backed up via a Finder copy process (drag-copy). It is necessary to use a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner in order to clone OSX to another volume in order to create a backup of it. I believe it can also be used to back up the entire drive.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner and Disk Utilities

I am trying to clone my drive to re-image all my computers (27), I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my new image and it works well; however, If I use disk utilities to restore another computer to the new image several files that should be invisible are in fact visible (etc, tmp, & var). While does this happen and how can I fix the problem. Remember I have 27 computers to re-image and 125 student accounts to manage the fix has to be easy.

    From "Supported configurations" at http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
"Mounted disk image. Cloning to a disk image will (obviously), not yield a bootable volume unless you use CCC to restore the image to a physical partition or disk."
From this, I gather that you must use CCC to restore the image. Presumably this would require using Firewire Target Disk mode, booting from a Firewire connected drive, or booting from another partition with the other Macs -- otherwise you would be trying to replace the OS those Macs are booted from!

  • I downloaded carbon copy. transferred entire internal hd  to new replacement HD  thru USB.  computer booted from replacement hrdrive. then installed replacement hard rive into iMac. when rebooting imac did not recognized new replacement hd.

i downloaded carbon copy. transferred entire internal hd  to new replacement HD  thru USB adapter kit.  computer booted from replacement hrdrive. then i erased the internal hardrive and reloaded the operating system.( i needed to find out if the hard drive was bad or virus/worm was the cause). then installed replacement hard drive into iMac. when rebooting, imac did not recognized new replacement hd. i also upgraded memory at the same time.  ok what did i do wrong. do i have to remove the new replacement hardrive to extract the data.

It should not matter. CCC will "clone" the recovery partition as well, but not knowing exactly what operation you had CCC perform it is difficult to know what may have gone wrong - it has many customizable options and you have to choose the correct one.
I have performed the same transplant as you described and didn't have a problem, but if your Mac is not recognizing the internal HD you really have no choice other than to reinitialize it as suggested. After that, install OS X, upgrade to Mountain Lion if required, and migrate your old account(s) from your backup.
    my backups have backups.
I assume you didn't mean that literally. Have redundant backups - don't "back up your backups".

  • I just installed the new firefox for Mac OSX 10.6.8 and when I select an image on a site (right click and copy) and paste in Photoshop 5.5, the image lightens. It does not do this in Safari.

    Question
I just installed the new firefox for Mac OSX 10.6.8 and when I select an image on a site (right click and copy) and paste in Photoshop 5.5, the image lightens. It does not do this in Safari.

Firefox, Safari, and PhotoShop each handle embedded color profiles differently. For an add-on that makes it easier to experiment with Firefox's color management options, you might be interested in: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/color-management/ Color Management :: Add-ons for Firefox]. • Installing A New Hard Drive - Creating A Carbon Copy

Hello and thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me.
I have a white Intel Macbook 2.1GHz that I purchased in October 2008. I'm about to upgrade it by fitting some RAM and fitting a new hard drive. I have a drive dock for the new 2.5 inch drive that I can connect via USB.
Can anyone recommend the best method of transfering the contents of the old drive and creating a carbon copy of the original, so that when I install the new one, it runs just as before?
    Thanks again,
    Jonathan.

I recommend SuperDuper because it's easy and it works.
There is also Carbon Copy Cloner but I've never used it.
As far as a method, I use these steps:
    1. Put the new drive in the enclosre.
    2. Attach the new drive to your MacBook and format it using Disk Utility.
    3. Clone your old drive to the new one.
    4. Test the new drive by booting your MacBook from it.
    5. Switch the drives.
