Card Cooling

What is a better way to cool a video card?
When it's really hot, like today, and the room temp is at 95F or above I have problems.
Yes, I don't have AC. :]
My Geforce 4 card just gets too dam hot and I get dumped back to Windows after a couple minutes of playing games, any games. :(
I have plenty of case cooling, four fans in an Antec SX830 case.
I use a CoolerMaster Heatpipe unit on the CPU, never reaches 50C even on a day like today.
I have come to the conclution it has to be my Geforce 4 and I need an idea on how to keep that sucker at a usable temp.

Well, my friend,
first i want to know if are oc your card or running at stock speed. Well if you are not oc, i will give some advices that have proven to be good for me:
First: you can replace the cooler in your card with one which don't use more than one pci slot, or better, if you can adapt a new 70 mm fan to your card's cooler it's better.
Second: i have tried this and had very good results; i have a GF3 Ti200 and i put a AMD Stock Heatsink with fan in the rear, I use cheap thermal paste (don't want to have conductivity in the traces...) and since i was afraid for the sink, i use in the for corner a very little drop of super glue, just to be sure, if i want to remove that is fairly simple.
But this one can't be done if your card has tiny resistors or bridges in the back, the heatsink will never contact on the hot surface, besides you will risk to crush one of these bridges and voilá a useless card with all the consequences which nobody of us all wants to imagine
But if you want to be extreme think extreme: Watercooling or in this case a better solution if you know how to install that properly.
Well, check your PSU and memory, they can be the reason of this  strange behaviour, i said they CAN BE....
Greetings and good luck!!  :]

  • MSI Changed thier cooling on 68GT cards.

Is the new one better or worse? I had an 68GT card, it broke, I got a new one from RMA, I found that the new cooling is missing a heatspreader on the backside, and seems much smaller, but I can change the fan speed on a small slider on the card, cool!.
    Anyone know about this?

    G'day Hipshot
My first MSI GT had the black Nvidia reference cooler on it, it was DOA. After RMA'ing it I got the copper heatsink version with adjustable fan control (you can see it in the link in my sig), and in my opinion this is a far better card

  • Video card dead? Need to get a PC one - flash it if possible, need some hel

Computer is a 13 month old, out of warranty - go figure, Mac Pro.
Okay, last night finished work and fired up WoW and had several crashes, this morning I could not open WoW without getting a video crash right away, just massive screen artifacts and unable to really do anything.
I was able to copy files across the network and get some work stuff on my wife's iMac even when the screen was locked up.
I started backing up a few drives to a central drive, so I could wipe one clean and try a OS reinstal and see if that worked, was able to copy them even when I couldn't access the screen (Watched them populate via the network.)
I took the card out, popped the plastic cover off and cleaned the dust off - there really wasn't much, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I took a can of air and cleaned off the Ram, CPU heat sinks, etc.
Was able to boot in a few more times, usually locking up the screen in 4 or 5 minutes, however now booting into OS X, CD or Bootcamp goes straight to a lockup/you need to reboot screen, I've tried letting the card cool off to see if I could boot in real fast and get some pertinent work files (That worked on a PC w/a overheating card for me before, but I can't get past the lockup now.
I live in Vegas, so called a few apple stores who do not have any replacement cards, looking on ebay they are 2-3 hundred for a 8800GT, ug.
I was going to go to Fry's and pick up a EVGA 8800 GTS, seem to see a lot of how-to-flash posts, etc. claiming that works, and that's a great 'today-fast' around $100.00 solution (Money is VERY tight right now and things are getting worse incrementally w/the Mac dead.)
However - every tutuorial to flash the card gives me step by step how to do it via making a bootcamp partition, and having both cards installed, etc.
I don't seem to have the capability to do it from bootcamp as I can't get past the panic. My wife's got an iMac so no way there, the kids have a mini-hp, bleh.
My bud has a hackintosh I built as a gaming rig last year, I guess my question is, can anyone explain how to patch the card on a PC? Is it even possible or do I need to sell a kidney to get a Mac Pro specific card, flash the Fry's one and then try to recover some of the loss ebaying the Mac card?
Sorry if I'm rambling, really still not 100% sure it's the video card, but praying it is as that's the cheapest fix in these rigs.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

See this link for a 4870 card, best instructs for flashing for a noob like me. (last lowest price was $150 for a 1GB vRAM 4870 from TigerDirect).

However, not every 4870 card will work with the ROM currently floating around out there. BEWARE!

  • 6600GT with new cooler

I have this card MSI NX6600GT-VTD128 Geforce 6600GT AGP, and have recently bought new cooler Zalman VF700. I connected everything and started windows, coolers works perfectly but when windows starts it still reports this:
"To protect your hardware from potential damage or causing a potential system lockup, the graphics processor has lowered its performance to a level that allows continued safe operations."
I'm guessing that that is because for my card cooler need to be plugged directly on graphic card, i think its called power molex or something , but Zalman draws power from PCU and i cannot connect it to graphic card.
    What should i do?
    ty

PERFECT , its working. Few more things, cable which is going from zalman goes into converter and then into 4pin molex cable, what if i plug in that into VGA instead of free 4pin cable?
And are settings now back on normal? or do i need reset them somehow?
    Ty alot for all help

  • X1900 World of Warcraft New Card Observations

I have received and installed my new x1900 card. In removing the old card I noted that the air intake for the card was somewhat clogged with dust. The air intake that the fan on the x1900 draws its air from is comprised of narrowly spaced vertical copper bars. Mine showed quite a bit of blockage. My office area isn't anything special but there was enough dust there that I'm sure the airflow was impeded to some degree. Whether or not it is a contibuting factor I can't say but I will be cleaning that blockage regularly from now on. We still have no solution other than cranking up the fans with smcfancontrol. That program did solve the entire problem of tearing for me. I will continue to use it with my new card because I'm concerned that over heating may damage the card itself.

I replaced my fan with one from Arctic Cooling. I don't know about the dust problem, but the fan keeps the card cool with significantly less noise than the stock fan.

  • What brand graphic card is better for Rendering?

I"m not asking what graphic card. I"m asking about Brand. Most people say for nVIDIA  EVGA is better and stablre. But as a Video editior we need good cooling on the cards. EVGA cards cooling doesn't look impressing when looking. Eccept the Signature cards they are equipped with close type one fan. But i find Gigabyte / Msi / Asus having dual fan and heat pipes. I really don't understand what brand to recomend to a friend who is going to buy a card soon.

I have the EVGA GTX 680/4G Classified and it is overclocked.
Depending on environmental temps, the idle temp of the EVGA card is slightly lower than the CPU temp when idle. Usually around 31 - 32° C.
Under heavy load, with GPU loads around 98%, core @ 1175 MHz and Memory @ 3523 MHz, the termp goes up to around 56 - 57° C with fan speed at 52%.  Memory bandwidth is then 226 GB/s. These figures are pretty nice and far below TDP.
All video cards are about equal, be they from Asus, Gigabyte, EVGA, PNY, Zotac, or other brand. They differ somewhat in clock speeds, amount of memory and cooling solution, but the differences are minor. The choice is mostly influenced by factors like speed, memory bandwidth, cores and # VRAM) in relationship to price and length of warranty. Cooling is not the deciding factor IMO.

  • 915G Combo And Double-Wide Card...

    Hello everyone,
    Question for you all:
I have a 915G Combo motherboard with an X800XT video card, but want to upgrade to the X1900XTX. However, the X1900XTX is classed as a 'double-wide' card. Is the 915G able to acccomodate it?
    Regards,
    Thor

Naw, a Pentium-D does not necessarily mean better 3D performance.
Remember a lot of games out there are written to take advantage of a single core only.  There are only a handful of games out there right now that takes advantage of two CPU cores.  At high resolutions, it's usually the graphics card that's the bottleneck, especially if you are using forced antialiasing or anisotropic filtering.  FSAA and AF are independent of the CPU, and they take a lot of graphics card power.
I wouldn't get the 1900XTX for a different reason...  It takes too much electrical power, runs too hot and makes too much noise.  I prefer the new 90nm Nvidia 7900GT, which uses just 85W of power at peak and dissipates around that much heat.  Works wonderfully with the rig in my sig.
As far as double-wide graphics cards go, it just means you lose the use of the slot next to your graphics card because it's taken up by the graphics card cooler.  I don't see any reason why it won't work on a 915G board.

  • Fan broken. need to check if the card is alive

    Hi,
Today i've found the fan on my NX6600GT broken while the computer was on (no games, just desktop applications working). I've turned off the computer and let the card cool (it was really hot). The plastic on the fan was nearly melting. Now i need to check if any component has been burnt on the card (if not, i won't send it to MSI but just replace the cooler with a better one). How this can be done safely? Can i temporarily replace the fan (leave the heatsink) with some chipset fan? I want to turn the computer on for an hour and see if something bad happens (like garbage on screen) indicating the card is damaged.
    Thanks in advance

A few minutes won't hurt, and likely it didn't do any real damage...but you don't know how long that fan's been stopped do you?
I wouldn't do anyhting other than just get to desktop and then shutdown.
I would look for an aftermarket solution rather than just trying to mess with the fan itself. The assembly is proprietary and there is not an option just to replace the fan with a standard type fan.
You could also consider an RMA if you have another card you can use temporarily. Otherwise you need to look in your region for a  e/retailer that sells aftermarket fans for the NX6600GT

  • Best Slot for sound card

Hello.I have a simple question about my sound card.
I have Msi Z97 gaming 5 and Creative sound blaster z.My graphic card is N660 Gaming 2GD5/OC. I was wonder what is best PCI-X slot to add the card.
In the upper place or down?

personally I would use the upper x1 slot so the heat off the sound card isn't being pulled into the Graphics cards cooler increasing its temperature a little but that's just me.

  • Bootcamp, ATI card and gaming

I received my new macpro on monday and everything is running great (2.66Ghz, 3GB ram and ATI X1900XT) However i'm having trouble with bootcamp. This is only when gaming i dont get it anywhere else in osx or windows, i will be playing a game and after 5 - 15 mins my mac will just restart. the strange thing is there isn't any warning for example no weird polygons or screen tearing. so im guessing this cant be a heat issue. i've also tried upping the fans in smc and on the card with atitool but even keeping the card cool (65c under load) it will still restart.
So im confused as to what is causing this random restart and whether it could be a conflict with an ati driver in windows somewhere and whether i should reinstall bootcamp and windows?
any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi,
    some questions:
    1. Which Windows, XP or Vista ?
    2. does it happen with specific or all games ?
    3. which games are these ?
    4. are there any updates for the games, have you installed them ?
You might want to consider to install the newest ATI Drivers from their website: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
Also a DirectX update could be helpful: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b406cf67-d926-463b-99e8 -27199d6626b5&displaylang=en
Before you install the new ATI Drivers:
    - De-Install the old ones (Control Panel - Software)
    - Install (if not already done) the .Net Framework 2.0 from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd -aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en
    - Reboot and install the new Drivers.

  • 6330 K7T Turbo Limited Ed. Problem

I bought a brand new 6330 K7T Turbo Limited Edition.
It shuts down by itself within 10 minutes (sometimes even within 5 sec.).
The temperature protection in the BIOS has been turned off and I've upgrade to
the latest BIOS (V3.5).  I tried unplugging everything except the powersupply,
memory, K/B, Mouse and video card.  But it does the samething.  Please Help.  Thanks.
    CPU: AMD Athelon 1.1 Ghz
    RAM: Kingston PC-133 128MB
Video Card: ATI Xpert 2000 (Rage 128 Pro)

    It shut down completely.
I didn't even have any HDD connected.  (M/B, RAM, CPU, Video Card, Cooling FAN, K/B & Mouse only)  I'm sure the PSU is good because I'm using it now (so as the other accessories).  the PSU is 400 W, 30A@5V, [email protected]
I tried 3 different brands of video cards, 2 brands of memory modules.  They all did the same thing.

  • Temporarily freezing audigy 2 and firewire not working - sol

    hi,
i had two problems with my audigy 2 using windows xp:
    a) my firewire port didnt appear to work. i had only one device using firewire which was my creative jukebox zen. i could only transfer 95% of the first mp3 and then it would say that my mp3 player is not responding.
    b) i experienced random and temporary freezes, not only while gaming but even when writing e-mails. everything would hang for a few seconds and then continue to work like if you write text it will appear after the hang.
firewire: i used my audigy 2 in my old pc with windows me and win 2000 without any problems. neither with firewire nor with the eax4 driver patch. under win xp i could only transfer mp3s via usb and that is slow as hell as you can imagine. i first tried if transfers using the firewire port on my mobo worked but it didnt, same prob. i found a fix from microsoft that is not listed in windowsupdate at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en (KB885222). that did not solve this issue but maybe you need that too so I mention it here. then i found some new drivers on the creative site. "oh you fool, why didnt you say earlier that you're using old drivers?" someone might say but these drivers dont work or more specifically, its setup routine sux. it quits with "an error occurred". wow cool... but it appears as it unpacks the driver to c:\program files\creative\jukebox3 or something (note, i have a zen and not a jb3...) so I uninstalled everything, rebooted and told the device manager manually to get the drivers from that location. now it works.
freezes: it took me many, many hours to search the internet, but i found absolutely nothing. sure i'm using the latest drivers (yea they actually work), put the card in slot3 and stuff. then i found a post on this board that mentioned that this guy's audigy had a heat problem. it became too hot and hung. hmm. i have 2x 2cm fans sucking heat out of the box through the radiator of my water cooling so heat is actually mostly get rid of through water and whatever else produces heat (harddisc, video card ram etc) is cooled by some really strong air flow. so wth, this card has worked for almost 2 years in my old box. so i opened the case and saw that air circulation around the audigy was impossible as its sandwitched by two other cards. those parts that i was able to touch were not that hot but i dont know how hot the main chip became and i have no clue why a sound card can become too hot from playing an mp3... anyway, i have left my case open and since then i havent had any freezes. now i also know why the freezes suddenly appeared and not since after i setup my box 3 months ago: it was open until i had cut a hole for the radiator...
oh yea, its good that my expensi've creative stuff works and that it was not creative's fault but that of a moron of a user. now honestly, how is an average user supposed to get their product working when the knowledge base is totally outdated and gives advice such as "update your bios, get the latest drivers and dont put your card into the microwave", when mods in this forum give advice like the knowledge base and the driver is not even installable? creative products are not bad at all, they're not cheap at all too. but the support page is absolutely not informati've and the knowledgebase does not give solutions to known issues. i was never ever able to find anything useful there and i'm really really not an average user but a very experienced one. not everyone wants to use a pre-installed dell box with el-cheapo components. i like to put my own high-end rig together and things must be pushed to the limit BUT still be absolutely rock solid. let me list my recent experience with creative products during the past 2 years:
-) bought an inspire 6. surround system and even replaced my audigy with version 2 for it. but unfortunately the subwoofer had a problem. it randomly made a popping noise which was so loud that it pushed your adrenaline level to that of a base jumper. i then found out that the whole batch had some faulty component. at least i got a replacement within a week, so i thought "yea, great support".
-) bought a jukebox zen, 20gb with firewire. it worked great for almost a year. then it died. when i switched it on, only the creative logo appeared, thats it. recovery mode was inaccessible too. it took me 2 months to convince the support lady to let me return this junk. first they sent me a new adapter because maybe it was damaged and the battery was low and therefore it didnt work anymore... then i was told, ok you can have a new one but we dont have firewire versions in stock anymore. you can have a usb one now or you wait until we get the firewire zen again. i said wtf, you produce this so why dont you have them in stock? and the usb version is sure not an equivalent to my firewire player. woot after 2 months i got a new mp3 player... had to rip 250 cds again (i really prefer having originals) and copy them to the player, but ok, i'm happy again. no, i'm not. this one doesnt work properly either. everytime i dont use the player for more than 24 hours i have to rebuild the database and scan the harddisc. that takes about 0 minutes for like 3000 songs!! grr... but i didnt want to argue with the tech support about that, i can li've with that. maybe i can flash to an older bios if i find one somewhere. from what i read somewhere it is caused by the zen going from hibernate into "off power" mode and then it forgets a few things.
and now i had the two issues described above and had to find a solution myself because the support pages dont help at all. sure you can say i should have thought of a heat problem but all important components are watercooled (even the north bridge) and i had some good airflow in general, but not around the sound card. and who knows that the audigy is that sensiti've to heat and that a sound card even gets hot at all. i've never heard of sound card cooling... i'm not that disappointed about the quality of the hardware because it is ok imo, but with the horrible lack of quality of the support and the buggy driver installation. hey, you get free advice by your customers, think about that. they tell you by themselves what the problem is and what they think may cause it. sure many posts are just flames but you should take ppl here more seriously. and if other manufacturers are to blame then put a list together like: msi k8n neo2 platinum - in this case upgrade to bios .2 or in that case install this or turn on/off that.
alright, i hope anyone can use this information. sorry for the length but i wanted to describe things as precisely as necessary. cheers from austria.

Hi folks,?Initially my audigy 2 nx was not working. But after installing the drivers for vista it started to work. But unfortunately, the other application from creative media source is not working. When I press EAX it says '[color="#000099">the application with the device not found'. But the sound card is working fine.[color="#000099">?[color="#000099">I have even mailed creative with the details. They have sent me a mail with the drivers and an application driver.
