Card Reader Suggestions

This is a bit off topic, but I can't figure out where else to post it.
I have a Dazzle CF card reader that I've been using with my desktop computer (and iPhoto) for years. It works, but is USB 1, so it's a bit pokey. I bought the USB 2 version of the reader when it came out; it claimed Mac compatibility, but it would not work with any Mac I ever attached it to. I finally gave it to a friend of mine who happily uses it with a WIndows machine.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good USB 2 CF card reader? I download lots of photos (I'm downloading some 500 right now), and would like a nice, small dedicated reader that I could leave hooked up to the computer. I have a nice little Firewire unit that I use with my laptop, but don't want to have to be switching it around all the time. The Dazzle unit is nice because it stands on a base and is unobtrusive.
Any suggestions?
BTW, I bought a small multi-card reader last summer, and found that it wouldn't recognize about half of my CF cards. That was a waste......

To import photos from an SD card that was formatted and used in a camera you need the Lightning to SD Card Reader. Here is the link to that in the Apple Store.

Another option is to connect the camera directly to the iPad. This will allow transfer of photos on the card to the iPad while the card is still in the camera. It is called the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.

  • SD card reader suggestions please

I just got a new DSLR and really was hoping to use ipad's "photos" app when I'm away from home.  I'm unsure what is a good reliable card reader for ipad air, so lightning to sd card reader is what I think I'm looking for.  The products available seem to get plenty of absolutely terrible reviews from users, so I thought I should get in here see if anyone has had success, and if so with what product?
    thanks everyone!!
    Ciao!

  • I have both i hoto and apeture on sidebar. When I try to open apeture the dot appears it bounces but won't open. Only if I transfer a photo from i-photo or my card reader? Any suggestions.

Apeture software. It won't open from the sidebar where i-photo lies also. Only when importing photos from i-photo, or card reader. Can anyone help with suggestion.

    Hi Iolenslooker,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
It's possible you may need to replace the shortcut to Aperture that is on your Dock. I would suggest first closing both applications.  Then open Finder, and in the Applications folder, double click on the Aperture application.  If the Aperture launches, then you can delete the shortcut from the dock, and create a new one by dragging the Aperture icon from the Applications folder to the dock.  The article below will explain more:
    Mac Basics: The Dock
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2474
To remove an item from the Dock, drag its icon an inch or more off the Dock and wait a couple seconds, then release; the icon will disappear in a poof of smoke.
Don't worry, you aren't permanently removing the item from your computer; you simply got rid of its Dock icon. If you want that item back in the Dock, locate the application, file, or folder in the Finder (or with Spotlight), and drag it back into the Dock.

  • USB card reader not recognized on Intel Mac! Suggestions?

I'm a very experienced user and own several Macs. I just replaced my PowerBook G4 with a new MacBook Pro (MBP). I used Migration Assistant to copy all files and settings and was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.
But the MBP doesn't recognize my USB compact flash card reader when inserted. The driver is definitely in place -- but for good measure, I downloaded and installed a fresh copy from the manufacturer. But still, no go. The LED lights up, but the drive never mounts. Yet, when I plug it into an older PowerBook (also running Tiger), iPhoto opens immediatelly.
Is this possibly an Intel-compatibility issue? I know that applications had to be updated, but I hadn't heard that drivers like this were affected. The manufacturer (Delkin) hasn't updated the driver since 2002, but there are various ways to interpret that (could be the driver doesn't need updating, or could be negligence).
    All suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Syncopator:
Check the Image Capture preferences to make sure iPhoto is selected as the application to open when a camera/card reader is connected. It may have been missed in the migration.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar

  • Flex 14 SD card reader not working with larger cards on Windows 8.1

The card reader in my Flex 14 is behaving very oddly. When I insert a 16GB SDHC card it makes the 'USB inserted' noise and the card shows up under device manager but I can't access it through file explorer. The card reader works fine with smaller SD cards that I have. I tried the card in another, Win7 laptop and it worked fine.
I see a number of other people are having a similar problem and I have followed all of the troubleshooting advice I can find, but nothing is working. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
This is what I have tried:
    1. Leaving the card in the camera and attaching the camera via USB cable to the laptop: same result, noise, but can't access the card.
    2. Trying to reassign the drive letter through storage controller: it shows the card but if you right click it to assign it a drive letter it says the 'file is missing'.
    3. Downloaded the Win8.1 x64 driver from Lenovo website and installed. This stopped the card being recognised at all.
    4. Installed the Win8 xc4 driver: this got me back to the noise but no action stage.
    5. Updated Windows.
    6. Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver numerous times both with the card inserted and without it and with restarting the computer after unistall and after reinstall.
    7. Ran Ubunutu from a live USB: This allowed me to see the card and copy its contents to the laptop's HDD.
So it seems to be some incompatibility between the Lenovo drivers and Win8.1. Potentially it's to do with the USB drivers rather than the card reader drivers as the result when using the USB cable and the camera was the same as putting the card in the card reader. Is there a way to update these?
Any other troubleshooting steps I could take?
    Thanks.

    What size are the cards?
Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • My mid 2010 Macbook pro running OSX 10.8.4 sd card reader will not work

I have a Macbook Pro 13" mid 2010 model running OSX 10.8.4.  I don't use the card reader very often so I can't tell you the last time it worked, but I have used it a few times without issue.  (probably not for at least a year though)
I searched the forums and it seems this was an older problem with lots of suggested fixes.  I tried blowing air through the slot and I also went looking for XQuartz but cannot find it under my utilities.  (I assume it must be in the X11 category that is no longer supported under 10.8.4?)
I have tried putting it in all the way and pulling it out slightly as one person suggested and that also did not work.
Any ideas?  For the first time in a long time I need the card slot and it doesn't feel like cooperating.  LOL
edited to add that I am trying to access a Sony SDHC 32GB card model SF-32NX
    Thanks in advance,
    Wayne

If you haven't already done so, eject the card by dragging its icon to the Eject icon in the Dock (where the Trash icon usually is.) Make sure the write-lock switch on the card is in the unlocked position. Then reinsert the card and test.
If there's no change, and the same happens with more than one card, the card reader is stuck in write-locked mode. I don't generally advise do-it-yourself hardware repair, but one ASC member managed to fix this problem. I haven't tried the fix myself and I can't offer any guidance beyond what's in that discussion. If you cause damage, don't expect your warranty to cover it. I suggest you instead make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Looking for an app for a credit card reader

Looking for an app to use a credit card reader such as the square register for the Z10. Or any ohter credit card reader.
I've been a faithful Blackberry user for over 6 years, I hope that I don't regret buying this new phone last June. Verizon tried to talk me out of buying a Blackberry. So far I have been dis-appointed in this phone.

Hey guys get ducks in order, I'm a small business owner, I need smooth native apps or built in's that help make money for me, your voice recognition is terrible at best for my Z10, especially when my job relies heavily on making hands free calls to clients, my old 9900 worked well when you had to say numerous commands to adapt to your voice or am I not seeing that this phone does this as well, if so why do I have find it!? As well, I like others are faithful early adapters to BlackBerry, but now, getting impatient as a other devices and OS's are becoming more appealing.
The new Square Card reader is a very good example that you should be working with them aggressively, this simplifying product is excellent for small businesses who provide mobile services, it will explode into adaptation for this sector, do not suggest an android app for use, otherwise I'll make it simpler and just get the android device instead, this solution benefits blackberry how? And if I am the rare one with this sentiment I apologize, but if I representative of a population that matters take it seriously...what do you do with this information? Remember when you start to get a bitter taste, you tend to never again, does blackberry care, show me, do not tell me!
PS/ if you get where the future is going most business are going to move to 2 devices for employees and owner operators that have partial integration, and the only thing that keeps you BlackBerry afloat is the "sense" of security is use, the second device will be for social and leisure...think about it.

  • CAC Card Reader not working on 1 of 2 computers

I have an iMac 20-inch early 2009 and a MacBook Pro early 2011. I have installed OSX 10.8.5 on both. I followed the instructions to the letter from http://militarycac.com/ on both computers. I am able to use my SCR331 reader successfully on my MacBook Pro but am not able to use it on my iMac.
    On the iMac:
I am able to see the SCR331 is conencted and recognized via System Information. The SCR331 version is 5.25 (updated firmward as suggested at ttp://militarycac.com/)
I attempted to install Centrify (which did not work) so I chose CaCKey instead, which installed just fine
When I plug the reader in, the light lights up steady. When I insert my CAC it does not blink like it should. The CAC certificates do not show up in Keychain either.
When I unplug the reader from my iMac and plug it into my MacBook Pro, it works just fine... I'm missing something somewhere........
Any help wold be greatly apprecitated! Thank you!

    I forgot to add:
On my previous version of OSX (unfortunately I can't remember which I upgraded from) I was able to use my CAC Card reader on my iMac. So, after upgrading to 10.8.5 I was no longer able to use it with the OSX native software. I wonder if some of the settings I had to tweak (when using the old OSX) are affecting this problem now...
I had never tried using my reader on my MBP previously.

  • USB Card Reader no longer works after Lion update.

My USB card reader/writers no loger work since I "upgraded" to Lion 10.7.4. All was well with Snow Leopard, but with no built-in SD card reader I must rely on USB readers. Anyone know how to fix this issue? Are there updates avaiable or coming soon to resolve this issue?

Hi MissMedia 83 and welcome to the forums!!
This has been a trend that a lot of AppleCare advisors have been seeing as call drivers. Essentially, many of the USB internet modems that are used widely require a 32bit kernel to operate. In Snow Leopard, although the system was in 64bit by defauly, people had the option of booting the computer into a 32bit mode to use the USB modems successfully.
With Lion, however, no such options exists. If your USB modem device is only compatible with a 32bit machine, then your only options are to either downgrade to Snow Leopard or find a different provider that supports 64bit.
Sorry to be the bearer of crappy news. My suggestion is to use something like a pocket wifi or personal hotspot, where you have a wifi network that is being created by a small device that connects to the cell network. Much much easier and your computer thinks it's just a regular wifi network.
This is what I think the issue is anyway. Could be wrong.
    Any other suggestions?

  • SD CARD READER NO LONGER WORKS after IOS upgrade. Help!

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get my sd card reader working again? My generation 1 iPad worked fine with it until I updated to IOS5. Today was the first time trying to upload pics since the upgrade. Nothing. Not even an error message. I rebooted and still nothing. SoTHAT was $30 well spent. So now, in order to get the pics onto my iPad, I am sending the pics to myself from my HP laptop, opening the emails on the iPad, and saving from there. The card reader used to work great for pics and videos. Gotta love it when upgrades make so I can no longer do before the "improvements." I would just return the camera kit/card reader, but I purchased it a year ago, so that bird has flown. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

  • Apple Lightning to SD Card Reader no longer working with iOS 8.0.2

I just tried to copy photos from my wedding to my iPhone 5 and iPad Mini w/Retina(both with iOS8.0.2), and I get the message "This device is not supported". I find this odd, as it is the official Apple branded SD card reader.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this would all of a sudden not be working? I had no issues prior to updating to 8.0.2.
If it is just this version of iOS, I do hope that it is fixed in 8.1.

  • CF Card reader no longer works on 10.4. It was working on 10.3

PCMCIA to CF Card reader was working on 10.3. Is not working on 10.4.
I have read all of the articles about it in the archives here, and apparently there is no answer or even suggested answer.
Inserting the Adapter with the card installed gets NO response from my powerbook since the upgrade to 10.4. All latest patches installed are to no avail, and I can read the CF to PCMCIA card on both my Microsoft Box and my other Apple (Not Tiger).
Since I use this method to look and edit pics catured on the card, this is not a satisfactory situation.
I am a little unhappy with no infromation being available on this as a repair.

If you are using a Lexar 32-bit CardBus Compact Flash Reader, you are SOL. Lexar indicated many months ago that they would not be updating drivers for 10.4 compatibility. It's always a good idea to verify hardware compatibility before upgrading your OS.
    Good luck!

  • SOLVED: 1030NR - SD Card Reader launches Found New Hardware Wizard when media is inserted

I purchased the HP Mini 1000 1030NR a few days ago and have been very happy with it so far.  Last night I attempted to use the integrated SD card reader to view some photos from my digital cameras SD card.  When I inserted the card into the drive, Windows did its normal hardware initializations.  It should have detected and installed the SD Card Reader automatically, but instead I was presented with the "Found New Hardware" wizard.  Every attempt to install the driver automatically via the Wizard failed.  Every SD card I tried in the reader produced the same results.
After spending 2 and a half hours online with HP support, their eventual resolution was to do a full System Restore.  As owners of the HP Mini 1000 will know, this process is made difficult due to the units lack of a DVD-ROM drive.  Furthermore, the problem here is clearly a missing driver.  Doing a System Restore as suggested would be like swatting at a fly with a cinderblock.  It may resolve the problem, but there is a much more straightforward way.
The problem is that due to the nature of the XP installation on the 1030NR,(scaled down for performance/size reasons), the linkage between recognized hardware and the internal Windows driver respository has been broken, at least as far as USB devices are concerned.  I found this out after the same HP support technician suggested I uninstall all of my USB Root Hubs from Device Manager and reboot.  Those never came back either.  Fortunately I had created an XP restore point beforehand and quickly got my USB ports back.  Of course, my SD card reader still didn't work.
The solution is to restore that linkage between recognized hardware and the internal Windows driver repository so that the operating system can "find" the USB drivers and in turn, install the necessary software components for the SD card reader.  Instructions for doing this are as follows:
    1.  Insert an SD card into the SD card reader.  The "Found New Hardware" Wizard will appear.
    2.  Check the radio button to not allow Windows Update to search for software.  Click Next.
    3.  Check the radio button to "Install from a list or specific Location (Advanced).  Click Next.
    4.  Check the radio button to "Search For the Best Driver In These Locations.  Then click the checkbox "Include this location in the search."
    5.  Click the Browse button and navigate to "C:\Windows\inf"  If you cannot navigate to this folder you may type it in the box manually.  Click Next.
    6.  Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to complete the software driver installation.  You may receive an error code at the end indicating that the device could not start.  Disregard this for now.  Once driver installation has been completed, reboot the computer.
    7.  Once the system is back up, the "Found New Hardware" wizard will probably reappear.  If it doesn't, make sure the SD Card Reader has a card inserted in it.  Cancel the Found New Hardware wizard and click Start - Control Panel - System - Hardware tab - Device Manager and look for entries with either an exclamation point or a question mark.  You'll probably see the SD Card Reader with an exclamation point and an "Unknown Device" with a question mark.
    8.  For the SD card reader, right click on it and select "Update Driver..." from the list of options.  Follow steps 2 through 6 above to complete installation.  At the end, the card reader should be functional (you can see it in Windows Explorer, etc.) but you'll still have an "Unknown Device" in Device Manager.
    9.  To resolve the "Unknown Device", once again go to Device Manager, right click on the Unknown Device entry, click Update Driver and follow steps 2 through 6 above.
    10.  One final reboot and the SD card reader should be functional and no ? or ! warnings/errors should be present in Device Manager.
The reason for this issue in the first place is most certainly due to the way Windows XP is configured on the HP Mini 1000.  Although this solution works for the 1030NR, it should also work for models in the same family that contain the 2-in-1 SD card reader.  HP really needs to provide an official fix for this issue, preferably a "patch" that re-establishes the linkage between recognized hardware devices and the internal Windows XP driver repository.  Their official support suggestion of doing a complete System Restore to solve the problem is impractical, heavy handed, and may in fact not solve the issue.
It took me nearly 5 hours total to resolve this problem.  I hope this post saves somebody both time and trouble.

C:\Windows is the default folder for the Windows XP installation on the 1030nr.  Unless changed during installation, all PC's (not just mini's) that have XP installed will have this folder present.  As for the inf folder specifically, this is hidden from view in Windows Explorer unless you tick the option to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from Tools - Folder Options - View tab.
Still, you shouldn't need to "see" this folder for the above instructions to work.  When running the "Found New Hardware" wizard, you can just type the path in manually at the appropriate spot.  If you truly do not have a C:\Windows\inf folder, then it sounds like something is wrong with your Windows installation and a full System Recovery may be the best option.  It might be a good idea to contact HP support first before donig that though.
Does your Mini run Windows?  If not, unfortunately the instructions I laid out above will not help you.  I believe the "other" Mini's run some HP customized version of Ubuntu Linux.  For that OS, you'll need to obtain a driver specifically for it to get the card reader working.  Try the HP site for a download for the SD card reader or contact support.
