Career advice for a Query designer

Hello all!
I have been working with SAP and BI for about 3 years, one year of training Customer Service Advisors on how to use SAP and 2 years of working in a reporting team creating reports and dashboard using the BI tools.
I don't have any formal training with computers, although I am computer literate and can write simple html and python coding.
I'm feeling a little lost in how to continue my career - what options do I have with my current experience? What should I be learning to make the next step?
Thanks in advance!
Rhys

Well, you have hands-on experience in BI. Why not continue with that? There'a a lot of scope there. BI reporting is not the end of the road. You can become an expert in modelling, become an Architect, probe into BIA etc.
You could also look at SAP BO (Business Objects) as an alternative or addendum to your career.

    Thanks in Advance.

    Hello Shraddha,
in that case you will have to use VBA.
just copy the code mentioned in the above links in Workbook->Tools->Macro
Create a macro with name SAPBEXonRefresh for the workbook in which the output is needed as " " in place of #.
    Hope it helps..

  • RFCs for the Query Designer

    Hello experts,
does anyone know the RFCs which the Query Designer use? (NW04s SP10)
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Best Regards,
    Marcel

    Hi Edwin,
I tried to use this function modules, but it seems that they have bugs, also the transaction rscz, because I copied a query and the copy is different to the original query.
Any suggestions for RFCs for adding characteristics to row, columns and so on?
    Thanks in advance!

  • What are the best design requisites for a Query design?

    Hi Guru's
Could you please let me know, which item will execute first when you run a query,I mean Calculated keyfigure, restricted keyfigure or formula  e,t,c...How does it effects the Query performance? What are the design requisites to optimise better query performance?
    Thanks in advance,
    rgds,
    Srini.

    Hi Srinivas....
The design of queries can have a significant impact on the performance.
Sometimes long running queries are the result of poor design, not just the amount
of data. There are a number of design techniques that developers can use to
    provide optimal query performance.
For example, in most cases characteristics should be placed in the rows and key
figures in the columns. A characteristic should only be used in the columns in
certain circumstances (like time). Characteristics having potentially many values
(such as 0MATERIAL) must not be added to the columns without a filter or
variables. Alternatively, it can be integrated into the query as a free characteristic
    – enabling it to be used in navigation.
If a relatively detailed time characteristic, such as calendar day (0CALDAY) is
added to the rows, the more aggregated time characteristics (such as calendar
month (0CALMONTH)) and calendar year (0CALYEAR) should also be included
in the free characteristics of the query. For most reports, a current period of time
(current month, previous or current calendar year) is useful. For this reason, the
use of variables is particularly relevant for time characteristics.
    To improve query performance
    1) Variables and drop down lists can improve query performance by making the
data request more specific. This is very important for queries against Data Store
Objects and InfoSets, which are not aggregated like InfoCubes.
    2) When using restricted key figures, filters or selections, try to avoid the Exclusion
option if possible. Only characteristics in the inclusion can use database indexes.
Characteristics in the exclusion cannot use indexes.
    3) When a query is run against a MultiProvider, all of InfoProviders in that
MultiProvider are read. The selection of the InfoProviders in a MultiProvider
query can be controlled by restricting the virtual characteristic 0INFOPROVIDER
to only read the InfoProviders that are needed. In this way, there will be no
    unnecessary database reads.
    4) Defining calculated key figures at the InfoProvider level instead
of the query level will improve query runtime performance, but may add
    time for data loads.
    5) Cell calculation by means of the cell editor generates separate queries at query
runtime. Be cautious with cell calculations.
    6) Customer-specific code is necessary for virtual key figures and characteristics.
       Check Code in Customer Exits.
7)Using graphics in queries, such as charts, can have a performance impact.
    Hope this helps.........

  • Career Advice for SAP BI veteran

    Hi SAP Community!
I'm Mike. I had been an SAP consultant for about 13 years. The last 3 years, have not been working as SAP consultant.
    My experience:
    SAP Basis 5 years .
    SAP BPS 2 years.
    SAP BW / BI / BI-IP  6 years.
I have never been a team leader. Always a consultant. a Doer.
I am now in my late 30's. I would like to progress/ transition into a more suitable position.
I have attained my PMP certification 2 years ago. But, as said, no management experience.
In the last 3 years when I was out of the scene, I was doing all kinds of low wage jobs. It started with the financial crisis.
Back then, not many projects were available. What made worse was SAP BI-IP had a replacement of sorts : BPC, BO and BI Accelerator.
I had given up SAP BI for the last 3 years. Now, I want to be back into SAP line. Outside of SAP line, I feel like a loser.
I am not sure if I should go for SAP BO training that would cost me a bomb as its again all the technical details to learn.
I feel that I am too old to keep repeating learning technical things that keep changing. i have the ability to keep learning. I have proven this in my career. But I like to have a career using my SAP experience and use my PMP.
I would like your kind advice how to make my next career move. What would you recommend me to do?
Thanks for reading. Hope to hear from you.
    Best regards
      Michael

    Hello,
I don´t have any special advice, since you´re much older and more experienced and I cannot tell how to put your skills into the best use. But.. if you would like to start with something new, "cutting edge", like BO a blog of mine could help. Check it here: /people/otto.gold/blog/2010/07/20/how-to-play-around-with-sap-and-crystal-reports-trial-versions-only Using the blog you should be able to recreate a training landscape (and it should not take you like weeks since you have "some" basis experience) and you can give it a try for free before you decide to go this way or not. If nothing else, I could spare you some money.
Wish you all the needed luck,

  • SAP Career Advice for newbie

I've been working for this a company a year now and feel stuck. Started as functional in HR module - did this for about 6 months and learned how to write functional specs. This position ended. Was retrained in ABAP for two months. Now moving into a technofuctional support role in SD module. My problem is that I'm having a hard time getting noticed and no work is being given to me. My manager seems confused as to what my actual role/activities/tasks should be.
For those with experience or maybe have dealt with this previously. What are some things that I should do to get work, get noticed, and learn on grow at this position? Should I ask for work? Should I ask to shadow? I need some direction. Your advice is greatly apprieciated.

If I were you, I would spend all your free time here on SDN. There are so many rescources you can explore... If you couldn´t spare a minute because of tons of work to do, you would get stuck as well. At the moment you may have the same problem as me - I am too young for a responsibility. Use this time carefully and increase your value for your employer. And think about it this way: You pay me, don´t give me work and I increase my value, but probably... you won´t ever venefit from my increased value:)) Prepare your career for a new employer. Decide what career you want to pursue, work hard and next change the job.

  • Super User Profile for Bex Query Designer

    Hi There,
What is the profile that will allow a user to create local queries, copy an existing (locked transported query), and change local queries - when the system is locked for change.  We are using SAP NetWeaver BI 7.0x
    Regards
    Fiona

I'm not sure about a security profile, but you will definitely need to make a setting in RSA1 to allow a user to create/change queries when the system is closed for changes.  In RSA1 go to Transport Connection then click on Object Changeability.  Look for the entry for Query Element, and if it says Not Changeable double-click it so it says Changeable Original.  Now you will be able to create queries or change queries that were originally created in that system.  If you want to also be able to change queries that were created in another system (i.e. change queries in production that were created in dev) right-click and choose Everything Changeable.
You can make similar settings for InfoPackages, process chains, web templates, etc.

  • Java EE design advice for a re-designed DB app

I'm currently tasked with rewriting a legacy DB app in Java. The original was written in Delphi. It worked great for a number of years, but the powers that be have recently decided to redesign and rewrite it in Java. Basically I just have the same set of business requirements as the original did.
Overall, the app is a desktop GUI application that helps track contents of a natural history museum collection. The collection contains a bunch of specimens (dead animals) collected all over the globe at various times over the last 200 years. Multiple users (1 - 10 uesrs) will have to have access to the data at the same time. I also have to provide a nice Swing GUI for it.
Here's my question: Is this the type of app that lends itself to a Java EE design? I'm imagining using a Java EE app server that connects to the DB. The app server would provide DB access, producing entity beans, as well as managing a number of session beans (EJBs) that implement the business logic (security, user management/session management). I would also have a Swing GUI that would connect to the beans remotely. This sounds like it would help me keep a good disconnect between the UI layer (Swing), the business logic (EJBs), and the data layer (entity beans accessed using the Java Persistance API). Does this sound reasonable? I'm a veteran Swing developer, but not a seasoned Java EE developer/designer.
Also, if I use this architecture, I can imagine one issue that I might run into (I'm sure there are many others). I can imagine that I would want to retrieve the entity beans (lets say mypackage.MyPersonBean) through some call to an EJB, and then use the bean in some rendered Swing component. What happens when the Swing component needs to access the results of MyPersonBean.getAddresses() if the addresses are lazy loaded?
As you can probably tell, I really have more than one design question here. Help/comments about any of this is greatly appreciated.

I was thinking the same thing, but don't have a
successful experience to validate my gut feelings.
Here's my only suggestion (which dubwai could
hopefully confirm or correct): write your entity
classes/data model classes with no knowledge of
lazy-loading etc. Then subclass them, overriding
just the getChildren() type of methods and build the
lazy-loading knowledge into the subclass.More or less, yes. Don't over-think it, though. If you define your basic data 'types' as interfaces, you don't need to get into complex type hierarchies or multiple versions of the types unless that becomes necessary and if it does, the changes should not affect the presentation layer.
Since you are on-board with this and I think you are completely following, there is a technique for the lazy loading that you can use here.
In the case where it's a one-to-one relationship, you can do the lazy-loading by creating a simple wrapper class for the child object. This class will have a reference to either null or a filled in Object. This is a little more OO because the Object is taking care of itself. Whether this abstraction is useful to you, you will have to decide.
In the case of a one-to-many relationship, you can create a custom Collection (List or Set) that manages the stub loading. If you make a generic abstract version and subclass it for the different child types, you might be able to reuse a lot of the data retrieval code. You can do the same thing with the wrapper too.
I will caution you to try to keep it as simple as you can without painting yourself into a corner. Only do things that you are going to use now and write things so they can be expanded upon later. Reducing coupling is a core technique for that.
    When the
GUI asks for an object in the getData() call, hand
them a subclass object, but don't let them know it.
In other words, have the method "public DataClass
getData()" return a SubDataClass object. The caller
will only know that they received a DataClass
object, but lazy-loading awareness will be built
into it. This way, the lazy-loading stuff is
completely transparent to the caller but you still
have simple data classes that can be used outside of
a lazy-loading context.Yes this is the idea, but don't write the other versions until you need them.
    It's also possible to use
this method if you need to add transparent
lazy-loading to classes that you aren't the author
of. (Only classes that have been tagged 'final' or
have 'final' public methods would be beyond this
method's reach.)Yes, you can use the wrapper approach above but if the author of that class made a lot of unecessary assumptions you might have trouble.
This approach allows for some enhancements, too.You
can create a thread that retrieves the children of
Foo (e.g. bars) incrementally after the Foo is
returned to the caller. Often you can load the
    bars
in the time it takes the user to click around to
    the
point where they are needed or at least be partly
done. This will make the app seem very fast to the
user because they get the Foo very quickly (because
you didn't load the chidren) and then the bars
    really
quickly (because you loaded them during user
    'think-time').
I love this idea. I'm hoping to code this into my
GUI app soon.I would advise that you get the main lazy-loading working without this (keep in mind when writing the code) and do it once you are sure you will finish on time.

  • Pb with language logon and data display Query designer

    Hello,
I do the translations (FR => EN) via RSA1 and SE63 of my variables of my Query for the query designer.
It works I have no technical name that appears in the query designer.
But when I run my query using the query designer, the query is displayed in French while I am logged in English.
I want the query is displayed in english when I'm logged into English.
    How can I do?
    Thank you pour votre aide.
Edited by: KhalidTaibi on Jul 6, 2010 6:31 PM

    Hello,
Per I can understand, you are executing the query from Query Designer.
So, if you are using Query designer 7.0, you are calling the Enterprise Portal.
Even with English on Query Designer, you have to logon as english on the
    Portal, as well.
Try to check your Browser configuration.
    On Internet Explorer:
    Tools
    Internet Option
    Language
Check if English is configured as the first language.
Also, ensure the query1s objects exists on english version.
