Career after ABAP experience

Hi all
I have 4 years experience as SAP ABAP Technical Consultant.
Currently working with a reputed IT company.
However , in my entire sap experience, I have worked only in support projects without much of learning.
Also, I have realized that I am not very comfortable with programming stuff since I neither got complete expertise nor the interest to work on.
Can anybody suggest me a suitable profile change within SAP but with a different technology/module
that I can take up so that my 4 years experience is utilized and also I get to move in a different technology other than abap?
How about new emerging technologies in SAP - HANA , Cloud , Mobility , UX ?
Any expert suggestions if I can move to SAP audit/GRC stream from here on?

Hi Shalini
Without you going into specifics of what type of ABAP support work you have done it is a bit difficult.
I come from a GRC/Security background and the only thing you have in common with security (and some of the GRC Access Controls) - I hope - would be knowing how to properly restrict your code with authority checks and proper DB calls via function modules/etc.
If you were to move down a GRC/Audit path, unless you have some specific audit qualification you would need to start from the beginning. Depending on the support you did for ABAP you might have a specific function module that you supported and could consider transitioning to that (possibly you employer might let you as well).
Having an ABAP background could extend towards the user interfaces and workflow. HANA is a platform (you can read up more look at free courses by searching SCN, check openSAP.com, etc). If you do not like programming, would you like technical topics? There is HANA development (and a lot of resources if you search) but I doubt you would want to do that if you don't like ABAP.
Cloud is how software is hosted/available to the client. At the end of the day it's about the applications... unless you were in a technical area responsible for the hosting, etc.
My recommendation is to think about your strengths, do a little research and find out what opportunities are within your employer. Support work is not bad (I wrote a blog recently after being fed up that people assume support work means not opportunities). However, if you do not believe you  have the experience or interest in ABAP, perhaps your employer sees that too and is therefore, reluctant to provide you with opportunities outside of support (like a project).

Colleen

  • Career after one and half years of ABAP experience

    Hi all,
I am an ABAPer with one and half year of experience.
I wanted to know if its really worth to switch to netweaver after having around one and half years of ABAP experience as in india promotions are faster and one remains technical person for around 7 years only as in case i take some netweaver component at this stage i will have to start from zero .Further marketwise is there too vast difference between an ABAPer and Netwaver technical consultant as it will again take one and half year to learn new Netweaver component and by the time i will be having 3 years of ABAP experience in case i decide to remain inABAP.
In other words which one is better option between one and half years of Netweaver experience or 3 years of ABAP experience marketwise and careerwise.I will be really thankful if somebody can give a bit descriptive explanation in this regard.
    Thanks.

    Hi Sandeep,
It would be better to choose what you like the most ie feel comfortable to work. If you really want to swith to Netweaver then go for visual composer it is very easy to learn and there are lot of opportunites in US with a very high package.
It is would be best if you concentrate to become a techno functional rather than going for the Netweaver. So that you will explore more in ABAP as well as in the functional side.
Sap runs on Business process, technology may come and go but the Business still remains like SD, MM, FI etc....

    Viveks

    Hello Sandeep,
The market is never static , it keeps on changing, 'Change is the only constant' . Currently Netweaver platform is the platform of choice for SAP Customers and many are involved in upgrading their systems to the latest SAP Offerings.
You should invest in Netweaver , there are several learning courses you can take up or maybe buy books and rely on self learning.
What career you want to choose is your personal issue, however SAP will definitely phase out ABAP in the near future (maybe a decade), so its worth investing money and time now into a product which SAP has decided to go forward with.
On the soft skill side, you can always learn project management and people management, there are several courses out in the market for the same, this will slowly progress your career and take you away to a point where underlying technology does not matter.
    Hope that helps.

    Siddhesh

    Hi Sandeep,
You are on the right track and working with good area's of ABAP, So try to continue the same. In between try to acuire some skills in NW components like Portal, XI where they need ABAP knowledge. So by another 1.5 year you wll be come a NW Consultant. Don't think about switching to SD since you don't have any knowledge in domain.
    All the Best.

  • Career after sap

    Hi, guru!
Could you tell me about possible career after 5-7 years experience of sap implementation? Is it possible to work in other sphere without earnings fall?
    Best regards,
    Modelator

    HI Sharang,
congratulations from from me too. Never create a fake track as especially in an SAP world you will really repent at a later time for doing that.
let me help you with an action set.
    1. Create a linkedin profile if you do not have already with a professional photograph.
    2. Choose and pick your connections extremely selective....do not add your friends and family, only industry professionals who can help you including recruiters who are local or specific to the country you are open to relocate
    3. In the job description field do not put any title but give a description of your expertise
    4. Now create some content in SD area that can show that you are current and add value.
    5. Search for the latest functionalities in SD with your s-user ID at http://service.sap.com
    6. Explain in SAP terminology, your past SD experiences and show how you can add value with your past experience in sales n distribution.
    7. In the worst case, get into a job in sales and distribution functional area (preferably where SAP is used) and work in this area and continue searching to make the real switch. This way you will refresh your SD functional experience. Trust me, time will fly on your new job as you search for a better bet.
for for the easiest part of a soothing line - there are companies which just need to pool some folks who are certified so that they can show a certified consultants pool to win some deals and they may surely look for a good bet, surely they will give you a better edge than employing fresh folks who are certified.
    all the best to you

    Hi James Bond
From the exception above, it can be seen that the AppIntegrator iView is trying to run on the "SAP_LocalSystem" where it should be running on a "real" backend system.
Please check what is the System alias in this iView and make sure it points on a backend system which has the same alias in the Portal System landscape.
    Hope that helps,

    Hi Chandan,
These days this is in demand. Not many people know about it.Even tcode is rare. You have to be quick and efficient to provide the solution to the customer's scenario.it uses PHP interface which helps us in object orientation programing. So it would be an added advantage. As s devloper you can understand the thing easily.

  • What programming language to learn after ABAP?

    Hi All,
Well I am kind of getting bored with ABAP / Workflow ! I was wondering what programming language should I learn to keep myself busy. What I am looking for is something new (it can be a an extn for ABAP/ SAP too) but something really new age. May be something like Mobile Apps for SAP. May be a new language all together. But again since SAP is bread and butter it would be nice if it can be used in someway or another in SAP too
    Any ideas?
P.S.: I have 8 years of SAP experience so I am not noob !
Moderator Message - I am un-marking this post as a question.

Well yes I agree that moving to new module is a good career move. But I am not looking to make a career move ! Its something just on the side..
I know webdynpro.. BI I need access to a system ! HANA same thing.. I am not independent in learning..I need some one to set up the system/login/access etc.. and thats not going to happen unless I sign up for a class !
While I write this my previous comment is still under moderation ! So I am gonna copy paste it here :
    Thanks Guys !
I am looking for something which I can learn independently ! without having to go after basis guys to download some SDK for me and installing notes for me.. Thats one of the reason learning anything new in SAP is a hassle. I guess BOBJ us out of question for this reason.
While HTML-5 sounds interesting wont I be better off learning Python? I know I can look it up but if you know offhand whats the benefit of HTML-5 and what kind of independent work I can take up for it ? I dont care about money but as long as its interesting I am ok with that !
I do have basic knowledge of C so C++/ Objective C may be a good move .. JAVA I am not sure off as its use has been declining off late (its still number 1 but its market share is  going down).

  • Shifting career from ABAP development to BIW - expert opinions required.

    Hi Experts,
I am having around 2.5years of developement experience in SAP - ABAP, i want to shift my career to BIW - can someone guide me with all the pro's and con's of the same.
Infact i want to move away from coding stuff - what all the things are neccessary topics for me to cover in BIW to start a career - as i have zero knowledge of BIW.
    Advance Thanks
    Harini

    hi,
If u are  having experience in ABAP then BW is a good combination for u.  But BW is a vast with theory and u need real time exposure in that area.  In BW we will write ABAP coding for transformations, and routines.  In BW ABAP coding is also there but very less.  I think u can start learning BW.
First u need to start with Data Modeling ( Infocube and ODS object design)- Extraction of data from flat Interface- Extraction of Master Data, Transaction Data, Extraction of data from R/3 Systems,Process chains. Learn these areas well.
As u already into ABAP learn how to do coding for routines,Enhancements then u can manage it very well.

  • Career in ABAP - Your feedback please

    Hello All:
I have been doing VB, javascript, XML ASP and some WEb stuff from the past 6 years and now I got opportunity to work in SAP ABAP programming. I heard SAP market is always good and I already started learning ABAP and just wondering if I am taking a right decision for my career! I know my decision is going to be final but I appreciate if you can give some of your opinions! Thanks in advance.

    hi Mithun,
You're wise to "look before you leap" into ABAP right now. As I noted in a previous question, the classic role of the ABAP programmer is changing. The future SAP developer will be a hybrid of ABAP, EAI, and Web/Java-based expertise.
It's not bad to get yourself a foundation in ABAP programming, but I think you're right to ask some hard questions about how marketable ABAP skills will be down the line. The market is definitely going to get crowded for the general ABAP programmer. And you're right - automated tools like Report Painter are making it harder for the average ABAP programmer to find good projects. BW is becoming the standard reporting environment for SAP customers, and tools that automate presentation and reporting are getting more robust with each BW release. Even though there will always be the need for custom ABAP programming, object-oriented development tools like BADIs will definitely reduce the need for "grind it out" ABAP coding. For all those reasons, if I were moving into SAP development, I would pursue two different angles. First, I would try to obtain hardcore ABAP development skills (custom development, user exits, dialog programming - heavy hardcore development. Not so much using neat tools but doing the hardcore custom work that conversion and reporting tools just can't do).
Second, I would try to get development experience utilizing mySAP, EAI, and R/3 product extensions. This means mastering SAP's integration toolkit, including BAPIs, BADIs, the SAP Java Connector, and the Web Application Server (formerly the Internet Transaction Server). But I would take it further and get exposure to emerging web platforms, languages, and integration protocols including Java, J2EE, and the many flavors of XML. Exposure to competing web-based development platforms such as Microsoft's .NET solution would also give you an edge. And since you can't expect SAP's customers to rely only on SAP's EAI solutions, acquiring skills with third party EAI tools from vendors like webMethods, Tibco, and Vitria would be another key part of your skill set. In addition to all that, you want to build in as much business process and application integration know-how into your skills as you can. These "big picture" skills help to protect you against both offshore outsourcing and the competition amongst "core ABAP" programmers. Put all of these skills together, and you're truly "the ABAP programmer of the future." But at the same time, your skills will be transferable to other non-SAP environments, giving you real flexibility in the marketplace. So, the bottom line for you: yes, go into ABAP if you see a good opportunity, but continue to keep your eyes open and do your best to enhance your core ABAP know-how with all the Web-based development skills you can get your hands on.
Please Reward Points to the helpful answers and closed the thread....

    Santosh

There are no standard issues in this split. Only thing you need to do is integration testing for scenario like SSO, Bex Reports etc.
    Thanks

  • What is the next step after ABAP ? Need resources for SAP structure

    Hello,
I have learned ABAP and now it is time to use it to write SAP programs. But what is the next step?
From where can I get information about SAP tables to proceed?
I have 2 ABAP books but they only provide the syntax for ABAP. After learning that, I am finding trouble in knowing on which objects/tables to apply it on.
For example, I want to know that when I use the CV01n to create a file, what happens in terms of internal SAP tables?
If I select multiple files in the search result "CV04N" which table should I access to get these selected files?
Basically does anyone know where I can find such resources in order to understand how to proceed in developing SAP application ?
    Regards.

    Hi HASSAN,
For Learning the Business part of  ABAP, (That is what is missing for you i.e the tables and their relations), i would suggest you to take one module at a time.
Like MM(Material management) or SD(Sales and distribution) etc.
Refer this link to know the business part of the SAP:
    MM:

  • What is best for my career: Sap ABAP or Sap BI

    Hi Experts,
I am Rajesh, done my bachelor degree in Information Technology,
having 4 years of Exp as a Mainframes Programmer in a Banking Software company.
    my job containts
    30 % understanding the product
    40 % Analysis
    30 % Programming
my career Goal is to get SAP job in Abroad(US/UK/AUS) for that i am planning like below:
First i want to gain some minimum(8-10 Months) Exp in India by
Choosing one Best(or)Hot Cake Module in SAP, which matches any one of 3 points
1)Currently that module should have more demand less supply.
    2)Should have good Future
3)it should not be much vast Because need to expertise Early
I already Trained and good in SAP-Core ABAP,
but just Core ABAP is not enough to get expertise in ABAP, because i need to add it with
    OOPS, Webdynpro, Workflow ETC.
even i Trained in all the above, it is difficult to be Expert in 1 YR.
and Hard to get job in US/UK/AUS.
So i am planning to go with SAP-BI for below Reasons
    1) SAP BI is not that much Vast compare to ABAP for becoming an Expert on it
    2) for Skill Set ABAP+BI, can have good openings
    3) SAP-BI is a techno functional Job, where ABAP is not a final Destination.
    4) in Future, BI will help to get into HANA.
I request you to guide me, whether my decision towards my Goal is correct or not,
if not, please give valuable Suggestions to reach my destination.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Rajesh

    Hi Rajesh,
as per as your selection of module, its a good mix, but i have a few words that i wants to share with you. Being a developer in sap abap i have come across some points where many indivisuals get strucked by asking what is next.
Started with sap abap you will have many options to go ahead, as you have seen that the combination of BI along with ABAP has an added advantages, and yes later on you can move towards HANA, one of the major sap module in which the database of sap persist in furure.
As far as i concern, if you wants to be in technical stream of sap you will have UI5, Webdynpro, Workflow, BW/ BI, HANA etc, so you may go ahead with these options, but as you have told that you wants to get hands on these things in one year, i think you have to devote in abap as much as possible
what you will require to know the syntax and semantics used in SAP, along with all the stuffs associated with it, once you will get familiar with it, you can play as you wants.
But one thing more is that its not mandatory to have sap abap knowledge to learn other technologies,  you can learn without abap, but if yiu have hands on in abap somehow it will boost your future in related technilogies.
So, finally your decision is on right track, what you will need is to get it as your passion.
