Career change - BI or ABAP

It would be much grateful if any forum experts could scribble few lines of advice at this juncture of a career change for me.
Basically a enginnering graduate in mechanical, I was always been interested in a level of programming as well as business processes..so ERP was always in the back of my mind..But my entry to IT has been associated with more of the UI stuff (to be specific, less of java and more of RIA) in my past 4 yrs exp in coding. But now I have taken a career break and am thinking of getting trained in SAP. I want to move away from more of UI development which I have always felt unthankful.
Since, I had a year's experience in purchase at the start of my career, I was thinking of taking up ABAP now and later down the years, I could move more towards a techno-functional role so as to satisfy my interests..Is this fine? I am unaware of ABAP's future directions.
Or I can opt for a training in BI, which also I believe is hot at the moment, and guess will be. But without a computer science background, is it fine to take up BI and become an expert? Also, will i be able to embrace the functional part down the line if I start with BI? What exactly will a BI expert be doing (nature of work) deep down his career path?

correct me if I am wrong. You don´t have any idea about how it works in SAP, how to navigate around, the concepts, nothing about theprogramming, about the database concept and stuff. Is that right? If yes, don´t think about the ABAP basics as the target, it will be thepath to the overall knowledge of the SAP system.
You will learn how it works, about the transactions, SAP standard, function modules, general rules you can use any time and that will provide you a better basis for your decision. After like 2 weeks playing with SAP ABAP trial (minisap) you will understand much more and you can ask the question again, with ability to ask about the details important for you.
In ABAP trial you can play with both ABAP language itself or the BI. Try, learn the basics and reconsider your question.

As previous poster said, a lot depends on how keen you are to learn networking. I switched from being a Unix admin to a network person because as with you i found the networking parts by far the most interesting. But i had to do a lot of extra work outside normal work hours to get up to an acceptable level.
You will also need a certain amount of luck/persistence. I would certainly encourage you to take the course but as you are already probably aware experience is just as important as knowledge. Is there any chance that within your current job you might be able to get some exposure to networking while you study.
if you can't then i would srongly recommend you try and pick up some second hand kit off e-bay to practice with.
As for good career change. There will always be a demand for good networking people and if you truly enjoy learning about networks you are already well on the way.
I would also recommend having a look at http://www.jobserve.co.uk which will give you an idea of what type of jobs are available in your area and in the UK as a whole.

Change - Display Parameters (ABAP)

Yes it is possible. You can do it using AT SELECTION SCREEN OUTPUT event. Just search forum and SAP help lots of sample code and help available on the same.

Dear Satyen,
Go to menu Edit-->Other user group, choose the user group, where u have assigned the infoset no give the name of ur query and press create button, it will display all the infosets those are assigned with that user group. Now select ur infoset and start developing the query.

I would like to convey my sincere thanks to all members in advance, hope to hear from you soon. I would highly appreciate your advise, am looking for a career change. I am 42yo, currently working as a lecturer of Marketing and Strategic Mgmt in UK for the last 10 years, now keen to change my career. I have passed MBA in International Mgmt and Finance a few years ago. As part of Strategic mgmt, I also teach some bits of finance such as P&L, Cash flow forecast, Balance sheet, Ratio analysis and Investment decisions. I enjoy the analysing and decision making process. My general IT skills are moderate. I am considering to pursue a SAP certification in FI/CO.
Could someone please throw some light, whether I stand a chance or not of getting a job in SAP FI/CO after passing this course, considering my age and having no experience in IT.

AS400 to SAP career Change

Dear Friends,
I have been working with AS400 technology for the past 8 +yrs. Since I see demands for AS400 professional (8-10 yrs experience range) has been drastically reduced, I would like to change my career. Considering the job opportunities and long term career skill, SAP appears to be the best option.
I am yet to explore more on Functional/Technical modules suitable for me, I would like to get your advise on this change.

1. As you are shifting from one TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM to other, be ready to spend - in terms of time and money. If you can afford to take the coaching then get yourself trained from SAP Education in your respective conuntry or else you can approach to your SAP division within in your organization to get yourself trained in ABAP.
2. ABAP altogether a different programming language, but I am sure with the proper training, you could able to achieve a great success in SAP.
3. Becoming functional consultant will be challenging for you due to lack of domain functional knowledge.
4. But with the good technical ABAP understanding, in future you can become a complete techno-functional consultant.

We need to add the required (additional) fields to the internal table structure, fill the fields with relevant data and display them on the screen. How is the output fields related to using a LDB..?
Can you explain me a little bit more on the below stmt?

I am not clear in understanding the relation b/w 'using LDB' and 'fields in output'. I dont think the fields displayed in the output screen will be restricted while using a LDB. Pls correct me if i understood wrong.

How to track changes in an ABAP program

Hi,
I have a program being changed by 3 people one after another !! I want to know what were the changes made by each of the them !! Just like tracking the changes in a CVS !!
How to do that in ABAP workbench ??

Are they making the changes under a same CR? If so there is actually no way to track the changes made by individual user, unless they put some comments. In such a case, the other option is to have individual users generate a version after completing their changes (but ensuring that no other user makes a change at the same time by using editor lock and releasing the editor lock after generating a version).. Once the version is generated, u can use change management
If the changes are made under different CR, then you can use version management as suggested by Rich.

I changed an existing abap query ME80FN but not find in production system.

But when I am searching for same query in Production via transaction SQ01 it is not existing.
Please give me some inputs.

1. Check if that ABAP query is transported to production or not.
or
check the versions of the ABAP Query in dev w.r.t Production so that you will know the status of the program in production.

Changes in sentences ABAP between release R/3 4.7 to R/3 6.0.

I would like to know what happen with ABAP programs when there is a version Upgrade. The case is that I want to analyze the upgrade from R/3 4.7 to R/3 6.0. , what kind of activities would I made to prevent or to try errors in programs after the version upgrade?
How I must get prepared?

You must use <b>UCCHECK.</b> for Unicode compability....What changes the most between older and newer R/3 versions is mostly the capabilities of ABAP Objects...Some tables may change their structures and some FM could be made obsolet by new FM's....
Beetween 4.7 and 5.0 ECC there's not big deal of a change...At least, no when I worked on a 5.0 ECC project....Not sure about 6.0 but must be sort of the same -;)

You can run or get an URL for query with ABAP Function modules. but for creation, it may not possible.

Change in Webdynpro ABAP(FITE_EXPENSES) iView standard code in Portal.

We are on EP 7.0 with ESS 1.2 and MSS 1.0. In Backend R/3, we have applied EHP2 for Webdynpro ABAP screens. In travel & expenses -> Create Expense report we have a requirement where we need to put our logic for calculation of receipt amount based on no of travel days.
for E.G. For a particular Expense type the amount per day is 100. While creating expense (Enter Receipts portion) user selects this expense type and based on no of days the receipt amount should get changed. For 4 days the amount would be 100 * 4 = 400. We need to code this logic in the standard Webdynpro Abap iView for Create Expense Report(FITE_EXPENSES).
Can I get some pointers for this change.

Your requirement can be fulfilled easily. Have you tried hiding a button or a field or label in simple iView same is the case in your FITE_EXPENSES hiding scanned receipts button. What you can do is attach a super user to a HR user having a pending expense report to be created. Through content administrator you can preview mytrips and expenses iview in that go and click on create in tab ALL MY TRAVLE REQUESTS for expense report then on scanned receipts button right click -> user settings -> hide button.

Software Configuration and Change Management for ABAP

Hi all,
we developed an ABAP application with about 10 developers and shipped it to Customer A.
Then we do corrections and enhancements for a new Customer B. But then Customer A finds bugs in his shipped version, which is not the current version on our development system.
Now a lot of time is wasted debugging the current version and finding out why the bug is there in the shipped version A but not in the current version.
So its difficult and timeconsuming to manage those different versions of the same application for different customers.
This effort increases with each new customer dramatically.
The ABAP workbench only knows linear versioning of single ABAP objects like report, function module or class.
Now the question:
Is there a standard transaction or external ABAP software that supports such a Software Configuration & Change Managment, i.e. allows tagging, branching, maintaining multiple development branches, allows running transactions and reports of older revisions, etc. like so many non-SAP/ABAP SCCMs like CVS, Bitkeeper, Subversion or Monotone do in the OpenSource world?
I found one called Conigma from Galileo Group, but am wondering if there are others, or whether there is someone having used such a tool.

In ABAP world, there is supposed to be one development environment for one production system.
The transport of changes follow the path
DEV --> QAS --> Production.
One golden rule is while making any changes to a program in Development, ensure that the version is compatible with production and QAS.
If there is a change request already open for the development object then that earlier change request should be finished first and the changes should get transported to QAS and production.
It seems you are trying to handle two production systems using one development system. That will surely bring some serious fun
Though, if you have no other option then keep the record of versions applicable to your different customers.
Later retrieve the version according to the customer before making any changes.
