Career Change - Should I Or Shouldn't I?

Hi Guys
This is my first post, so I'm still very new to the forum!  I'm a South African, living in London at the moment doing consultancy work for Sage products.  I have about 5 years experience in accounts consultancy and CRM, and would like to potentially move onto SAP.
The particular line of software that I'm specialising in at the moment is Sage 200 Accounts.  I'm concerned that if I spend another few years or whatever on this product that it won't be beneficial for my career for when I go back to SA (They don't have Sage 200 in SA).  I could use the experience I have in support, consultancy and project implementation and potentially apply it to SAP (I've never even seen it so it would be quite a big step), thereby carrying some useful knowledge back with me when I return home.
SO.... What are your thoughts?
Is there anyone here that has made the transition from another line of software to SAP?
Are you SAP consultants happy?
Thanks for taking the time to read this,
and Merry Christmas to you all!
Warren Hetherington

ABAPers tend to be a more contented lot.  Functional analysts seem to suffer from stress and having to write really long and profoundly dull documents.  Sometimes they're allowed to put values into tables.
@Marilyn - I think that was a typo - I think you meant "Thanks for posting in the coffee corner, where some of the most entertaining and occasional intelligent conversation does happen."
Seriously... getting into SAP is very difficult.  With your financial background, you might find some consultancies that are interested.   Or you could land a job with a company that's implementing SAP.  With what you've said about your background, I don't think you'd have difficulty doing the job itself, but most employers seem to look more at experience than ability.  I made the switch into SAP from other technologies by landing a job with an employer who offered SAP training, because they found it so difficult to get experienced SAP people.  But that was in the 90s, during a boom time.  During a recession...  could by tricky.

  • Career change from open VMS system admin

    Hello Everyone !!
I was working as a Open VMS system admin for 3 years in a top  IT company .
Now i am  looking for a change and is willing to move in SAP. I am undergoing training in SAP Basis/NW admin . Can u tell me what career path should i take with kind of exp i had and what certifications should i proceed so as to tap with the recent  market demands and also to ensure a progressive career growth in this field.
    Your suggestions are invited.
    Thanks
    Vipul

    Hi Vipul,
SAP Basis is always in demand and NW admin knowledge will give you more opportunity. Certification on SAP Basis/NW Basis will be an added advantage for you.
Even after 3 years of experience in SAP you will be as a fresher and have to work very hard to tap the knowledge.
    All the best.

  • Networking Engineer = Good choice for a Career change ?

Hi Cisco forum . I am a 48yr old CNC Engineer in Stoke ( UK ) ,bored to death with it . I am about to take the COMPTIA A+ exam in 4 weeks , which will lead on to the Cisco Networking course ( if I pass ) .Please can you inform me if there will be a career for me ( out there in the real world ), when I complete the full course . Is Networking & its relevant jobs still a Good Career change ? I have found the networking part of the A+ course the most interesting , so I hope that your replies !!! , are favourable . Thanks for any info ( good or bad ) from Rob In Stoke

    Hi Robert
As previous poster said, a lot depends on how keen you are to learn networking. I switched from being a Unix admin to a network person because as with you i found the networking parts by far the most interesting. But i had to do a lot of extra work outside normal work hours to get up to an acceptable level.
You will also need a certain amount of luck/persistence. I would certainly encourage you to take the course but as you are already probably aware experience is just as important as knowledge. Is there any chance that within your current job you might be able to get some exposure to networking while you study.
if you can't then i would srongly recommend you try and pick up some second hand kit off e-bay to practice with.
As for good career change. There will always be a demand for good networking people and if you truly enjoy learning about networks you are already well on the way.
I would also recommend having a look at http://www.jobserve.co.uk which will give you an idea of what type of jobs are available in your area and in the UK as a whole.

  • After creation PO, pr changes should not be possible.

    Hi friends,
our requirement is.......if PO is created by some PR....then
after creation of PO PR changes should not be possible.
    How we can restrict this?
    Any message?
    Rgds,
    Navin

You can add message 06 608 in  IMG ---> Material Management ---> Purchasing ---> Environment Data ---> Define Atributes of System Messages.
    if not already there.
This message appears if one changes the quantity in a requisition for which a PO already exists.
If you set the attribute to E for Error then the requistioner should not be able to change a PR anymore if PO exists.

  • Career Change

    Dear all
I would like to convey my sincere thanks to all members in advance, hope to hear from you soon. I would highly appreciate your advise, am looking for a career change. I am 42yo, currently working as a lecturer of Marketing and Strategic Mgmt in UK for the last 10 years, now keen to change my career. I have passed MBA in International Mgmt and Finance a few years ago. As part of Strategic mgmt, I also teach some bits of finance such as P&L, Cash flow forecast, Balance sheet, Ratio analysis and Investment decisions. I enjoy the analysing and decision making process. My general IT skills are moderate. I am considering to pursue a SAP certification in FI/CO.
Could someone please throw some light, whether I stand a chance or not of getting a job in SAP FI/CO after passing this course, considering my age and having no experience in IT.
Much appreicated all your valuable advise!!!
    Kind regards
    Samuel

    Samuel,
Hi! Yes, there are many opportunities in SAP-related careers. As you know a career combines skills, education, and work experiences. The need for business skills combined with IT is in need. In addition to FI/CO, you may want to keep your eye on trends which relate to SAP CRM, SAP CRM on Demand, SAP Sales on Demand, and SAP Business Analytics. Also, we provide additional background in the UA Career Resource Center - UA Career Resource Center
    Best regards,

P.S. Age is in the eyes of the beholder...!:-)

  • Career change - BI or ABAP

It would be much grateful if any forum experts could scribble few lines of advice at this juncture of a career change for me.
Basically a enginnering graduate in mechanical, I was always been interested in a level of programming as well as business processes..so ERP was always in the back of my mind..But my entry to IT has been associated with more of the UI stuff (to be specific, less of java and more of RIA) in my past 4 yrs exp in coding. But now I have taken a career break and am thinking of getting trained in SAP. I want to move away from more of UI development which I have always felt unthankful.
Since, I had a year's experience in purchase at the start of my career, I was thinking of taking up ABAP now and later down the years, I could move more towards a techno-functional role so as to satisfy my interests..Is this fine? I am unaware of ABAP's future directions.
Or I can opt for a training in BI, which also I believe is hot at the moment, and guess will be. But without a computer science background, is it fine to take up BI and become an expert? Also, will i be able to embrace the functional part down the line if I start with BI? What exactly will a BI expert be doing (nature of work) deep down his career path?
All inputs are greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

    Hello,
correct me if I am wrong. You don´t have any idea about how it works in SAP, how to navigate around, the concepts, nothing about theprogramming, about the database concept and stuff. Is that right? If yes, don´t think about the ABAP basics as the target, it will be thepath to the overall knowledge of the SAP system.
You will learn how it works, about the transactions, SAP standard, function modules, general rules you can use any time and that will provide you a better basis for your decision. After like 2 weeks playing with SAP ABAP trial (minisap) you will understand much more and you can ask the question again, with ability to ask about the details important for you.
In ABAP trial you can play with both ABAP language itself or the BI. Try, learn the basics and reconsider your question.
    I hope that could help,
    regards Otto

  • Career change to VMware or SAP BASIS?

    Hi Friends,
I have 4 years experience as a System Administrator (Windows & Linux). Now I'm planning to change my career to another technology. I considered VMware and SAP BASIS. Here I have confusion which technology should I choose, which one have better job scope (VMware or SAP BASIS). Please give me your valuable suggestion for my career growth...

Note: Discussion successfully moved from VMware vCenter™ to Virtual Lounge
Honestly, I think you would be fine going with either of those paths. Good Luck!

  • I bought my iPhone from apple, had ATT, then changed to Verizon.  Shouldn't I be able to unlock it from Verizon and use the same phone on an ATT account?

i bought my iphone 4S from apple while i had an att account, then changed to verizon with the same phone.
verizon said they unlocked the phone from their network so i could return to att, but the iphone 4S won't recognize the att sim card.
is there anything i can do to use this apple store phone purchase and return to an att network?

    Thank you.
    I'm a little muddy tho...it's not a verizon phone,
not bought from or through Verizon, but at the Apple store.
    Does that make any differerence?
On the original box, it says that it supports CDMS & GSM
I spoke with Verizon this morning.
They re-activated the phone to the verizon account,
    unlocked it, and released it.
Should this make any difference at all?
My thinking to purchase the iphone through Apple
was not to dedicate it to either ATT or Verizon network.

  • FA approver changes should not lead the cart to buyer

    Hi all,
FA(Financial approver) changes the Product category, cart should not go back to buyers and if there is the change in Purchase types then  it should redetermine approvals based on new purchase types.
In our current scenario, if FA approver changes the product category then it leads the cart to buyer for sourcing.so now the requirement is if FA approver changes the product category it should not leads to buyer.
Please suggest your thoughts to proceed.
    thanks,
    sibi.

    Hi,
Please check the BBP_WFL_SECURITY personalization key in personalization tab of PFCG or SU01 transaction.
    BBP_WFL_SECUR_BADI is also available.
    No authorization
Changes to the document are not allowed while it is being approved.
    Low
Changes can be made to the document. The approval workflow is restarted after every change.
    Medium
Changes can be made to the document. After every change, the approval workflow either continues or is restarted.
The system evaluates the start conditions and restarts the workflow if a new approval is required as a result of the change. If this is not the case, the approval workflow continues.
    High
Changes can be made to the document. The current approval process always continues. A new approval workflow is not started when the document is changed.

  • My IDOC segment change should reflect ONLY for 1 extension

    Hello
I have added a additiona/new field to a custom segment. And this segment is used in 2 IDOC extensions, say Z_ORD_1 and Z_ORD_2.
But, we are interested only in Z_ORD_1 extension. So, some how can i restrict that my additional field should point only to Z_ORD_1 and its associated processing FM.
Because, there is no change in Z_ORD_2 processing FM and all its associated interfaces/XI stuff.
Can i restrict my change only should applicable to Z_ORD_1?
    Thank you

I do not think we can restrict at segment level to point only to a particular extension...
Suggestion would be control at data level before creating IDOC...you can check the extension fill the field accordingly...
if that field is not filled, IDOC will not take it in output structure...
    Thanks

    Kanthi,
SAP XI seems to be doing pretty well and should be able to find something eventually. That is not to say that SAP Security in not a good choice, but jumping into SAP Security would be a totally new concept (unless you have already been exposed to that area as part of your ABAP experience)

  • Software updates?Should i or shouldn't i?

I've had my iPhone for a few months and i've been avoiding all updates. The first time i tried updating(phone #1)the phone crashed and had to be replaced. Do you think i should risk phone #2 with the latest update??IS it worth it?

curious snoopy, you are from australia - are you on the Telstra network?
if so... they have reverted their APN settings back to telstra.iph in which SOME iphones are NOT provisioned in that Access Point Name - if the case is when you complete the 3.1.3 update and you are unable to access your Cellular Data you must contact Telstra to change this server-side, just a tip. Australia now do not have a carrier that support to changing of the APN settings on the iphone's Cellular Data Network setting
anything else, this 3.1.3 update seems fine, i would recommend it!
