Career Development Insight- Consulting

Hello everyone, first off I would like to introduce myself on the OTN Community. My name is Thien-Phong Dinh and I am currently a junior at the University of Houston's Bauer College of Business. I have approximately about 3 semesters left before completing my degree in Management Information Systems. I am on to this discussion looking for any insight available from those who have "been there and done that", so please do help and provide your story/insight.
I am relatively young, going to be 22 years of age by the end of this month. I would like to get into the IT Consulting industry once I finish my degree. Reason being for consulting is that I would like to venture outside of Houston and see the world so to speak. I know off the bat that I enjoy organizing data and what this information can do in terms of making better financial business decisions. I had the opportunity this past summer to intern for a small investment bank, Global Hunter Securities, that specialized in oil field and equipment services. Anyways, long story short I was fascinated by what better organized data can be used for in terms of providing investing decisions for clients. I enjoyed designing a custom database with custom queries for GHS while my intern duration and I would like to know what is the best route of getting my foot in the door to becoming an IT Consultant whose area of expertise would be Database Administration/Architect.
I am in the process of preparing for an Oracle Certification sometime this December and would like your insight on what you believe is the best way to get into the IT Consulting industry.
Do I need to get certified by oracle to become an IT Consultant? If so,..
Which certifications will help me land a career starting off as an IT Consultant for Oracle products?
How did you get into the IT Consulting profession?

As a general rule, Oracle consultants are expected to be individuals with a great deal of experience with the Oracle database -- not someone just starting out with it.  Consultants are often hired to come in for a short time frame to perform some job that in-house resources have been unable to resolve.  Since it's impractical for the most part for a company to have an Oracle database and not have a DBA to maintain it -- this means that the consultant presumably knows more than the in-house DBA.  Becoming a consultant therefore normally start with working as a DBA or developer for years gaining experience with Oracle.
On my OCPrep blog, I try to give advice about getting certified in Oracle and starting/building your career working with it.  I don't currently have a post specific to becoming a consultant.  I picked the following out of the ones there as being reasonably appropriate for your question.
Oracle Certification Prep: I know nothing about Oracle... but I want to be a DBA.

  • Career development

Well, I'm not quite sure whether this is the right place to put this one. Essentially, I was looking for a place to post career development questions, and couldn't find one.
Right, so I've been an Oracle SCM functional consultant for around 6 years now, from Consultant to Team Lead, and am getting kinda bored with it. More than monotony, the fact that many people all around me have the same profile irritates me like anything. I've always wanted to do something exclusive, but am not sure where to start from. Basically, I want to use these 6 years of experience to get into something niche. It doesn't necessarily have to be entirely technical/functional. or entirely managerial. Can be a bit of both, actually. I've not yet done an MBA, so if doing an MBA helps me in reaching this goal, that's fine with me as well.
In a nutshell, I would like to get into something which the world needs more of, and cannot get in plenty, and at the same time use these 6 years of experience.* Doing an MBA was an option, but even post MBA, I would land up with a manager's job, and aren't there millions of managers already around?
Would require pointers from experts, please. I'm from India, if that helps in any way.
    thanks!!

I think he does make some good points, though I have the impression all his posts on the subject are merely marketing fluff to justify his rates for his consultants. The San Marcos State university mentioned in the comment is close to where I live (we usually call it Cal State San Marcos), and I've worked with a number of people who have gone there, including as a DBA for a dev team at a startup ,who all went there including their manager. They put out quality grads, too bad startup upper management was snotty USC kids who missed the proper opportunities. Nearby used to be one campus of the National University mentioned in [url http://www.degreeinfo.com/off-topic-discussions/3560-losing-gaining-regional-accreditation.html]this thread, where I took some MBA classes in the '90s. I've found those classes to be very useful, personally, since I so often have to translate between MBA-speak about non-IT departments and technical requirements.
I speculate this applies even more so to India. They are going through boom times with [url http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-06-14/tata-consultancy-hires-70-000-employees.html]extremely rapid growth, which is fertile ground for scams. I wonder if the companies are ready yet for some experienced worker to say "Hey, I'm ready to move up in the world, why don't you send me to MBA school so you can have someone ready for your future growth." But I think most workers in that environs would just play musical chairs until the music stops (aka job-hopping until cheaper labor in other third world countries takes the business away).
The thing about business schools is they (hopefully) teach about managing cash, the usual problem in the startups that appear when the big boys crash and start firing lahks of employees.

  • Req suggestion to start up Career for SAP consultant

    Hi all,
Can u suggest me how can I start up my career as SAP Consultant in SD or WMS, I have 7 + years of  Experience in Both the modules as End user now I want to start up my career as consultant... Can u plp guide me how to Start up and what are required for the same?

    Hello Surender,
It good that you have chosen a path to be an SAP Consultant.
As a end user for more than 7 years, you will be familiar with business process and with SAP technicalities too.
So, you can go ahead and give certification exam. If you feel you need a training before giving certification, You can have a formal training in SAP authorized education partner and then apply for certification.
While going through this, i wish to tell you some things which a person should keep in mind while going for certification.
Kindly do Remember, SAP Certification is not a Job Guarantee Program. Certification may add a value to it if you possess enough domain knowledge.
Companies Need Consultants who have good experience and knowledge in Business scenarios.
So, if you are good with Business process and have a valid SAP certification, then it will be easy for you to crack the interviews and get a break in your consulting career.
Regarding to your question about which module to choose SD or WMS, It is up to you to choose a module, Learn and Excel in that. There is no standard answer for choosing a module.
I would suggest you to choose a module in which you know the business process more.
All the best for your SAP Consulting career.

  • Do a developer or consultant in  XI uses NW Developer Studio ???

    HI Friends,
I have learned XI and need to work in XI.
In real time, does XI depends on NW Developer Studio?
or Netweaver Developer Studio is meant for EP?
My boss suggested me to do one application in NW Dev Studio.
I am confused by this as I thought Dev Studio is meant for EP?
Please let me know about this ...
    Thanks
    Viswanath

    Hi,
NWDS new Eclipse-based development environment for Java Enterprise applications, Web Dynpro applications and Web services.
The SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio introduces SAP’s own environment for developing Java-based, multiple-layered business applications. The new development environment is based on Eclipse, an open source product, whose open Plug-In Architecture provides a suitable platform for incorporating specific functions.
By offering a single point of entry for all Java development tools and an integration point for all SAP infrastructure components, the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio (subsequently abbreviated to Developer Studio) supports you in developing Web Dynpro and J2EE applications. Moreover, it is based on a defined software logistics process. Application developers do not need to switch between different development environments for the presentation and business logic. Instead, they can develop, build, deploy, and execute applications centrally from the Developer Studio.
Mainly these JAVA application development is related to EP, that may be the reason you felt that it only meant for EP. In XI also we need to develop some JAVA application based on requirement as Michal has mentioned in his reply such as Module development, Adapter developmet and others absed on XI requirement for JAVA application.

  • [Developer Insight needed] Rotation Settings File ...

Here we go, I have a N8 and an E7 and when disabling the rotation sensor, on my N8 the whole UI gets locked to portrait orientation. This is extremely annoying for sleeping screen and caller screen in my car, when the N8 is oriented the way the E7 is when landscape with the keyboard slided out.
I need to know, wether it is because of some hardware setting in the sensor that I cannot have the N8 in landscape locked or if it is some file that is different on E7 than on N8 and where it is located so I can mod it.
This makes no sense to the enduser and needs to be fixed. Give us the possibility to have lockscreen, sleeping screen and caller screen in landscape as  well. The UX is already working for it, I have seen it on a C6-01 sporting S^3 where it stayed in landscape due to a bug.
    So what's this all about?

Ok. So here is my current .bat code:
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32frun60
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32gui60
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32oin60
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32nmp23
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32netclt80
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32tcp80
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32Tracesvr80
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32ssf60
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32rsf80
    orainst /silent /prd nt.prd /rspsrc response.rsp /install w32tutil60
The installer starts up, says "analyzing dependencies" and "preparing to install" then just stops. I'm scratching my head here. This batch script seems to begin the installation (or at least it gets further along in the installation process than my previous attempts), then just craps out. It even creates the C:\orawin6i home directory that I want, and adds some files to it before quitting.
Is there an order in which the components must be installed to work? Are there files upon which the proper installation is dependant? Do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Career Management and Grading Systems in SAP

I'd like to learn about Career Management and Grading Systems in SAP. My company is currently in the process of implementing a dual career path (specialist vs. structural) for our IT organization, as one of the initiatives to improve engagement level of technical employees.
    Best Regards,
    Iwan Prajogi

    Hi Iwan,
Thanks for your reward.Well actually SAP itself  implemented mySAP E-recruiting 6.0 and the succesion planning module does the task.
I am afraid I can't give exact information as to the technical positions, but what I see is it is a so called TALENT GROUP in e-recruiting.
    <b>Succession Planning Program
SAP also has a special interest in employees who have the potential to move into key positions within targeted timeframes. An annual program identifies successors for management and executive positions. Like the high potential process, the career-development needs of our leaders are carefully planned and tracked.</b>

  • Please Help: Career Path for becoming a SQL DBA

    Hi All
I am a Software developer with around 15 months of experience in .Net 2.0 and VSTO.
I am currently working in a SQLServer 2000  project.
I feel more interest to work with database than front end coding.
Can anyone suggest what need to be done for the one to be a DBA.
Could you please provide more details on the roles and responsibilities and the scope for career development on becoming a DBA.
In what Timeline can i be a  DBA. After becoming a DBA what are the career options available. Please help me out in deciding my career
    Thanks in Advance,
    Sidharth

On these days DBA is an abstract level word. DBA can be further classified to Development DBA , Production DBA , Data warehouse dba, ETL DBA , DB Architect DBA and even may be REPORTING DBA.  Each job has its own significance. Role for each dba may differ. Some time DBA perform multiple role in an organization (in my case i am doing Architecting / part time Production DBA  and Dev DBA role).
In addition to Kalman suggestion, what you can do is , you can start from Virtual labs provided by Microsoft.  If you ask the timeline, its all depends. Hands on experience is the key.

  • Disable launch of front panel when starting web services

    Hello all,
This may be a naive question as it may have a simple answer that I am missing, but is there a way to not have all VIs associated with a web service launch (i.e. show their front panel) when you start a web service?  I find this to be very irritating as I have a lot of VIs associated with the web service that I am running and don't want my windows cluttered up with VI front panels that I am not interested in viewing.
    Thanks, Matt

Thanks for the reply, tst.  I was hoping that I would be able to reproduce this on the client side, but unfortunately I can't generate a simple example .  My web service is large and contains a lot of resources to access different variables and it seems to reproduce this, you would have to deploy this onto an RT target.
Some further insight into the issue - starting a web service on my current target is similar to when you select Deploy All on a virtual folder in a project - all of the front panels become visible.

  • What is the difference between action and workflow? How do I decide that I need an action in a transaction and not a workflow and vice versa?

    Dear Experts,
I have few doubts and request your expert inputs to clarify my doubts.
What is the difference between action and workflow? How do I decide that I need an action in a transaction and not a workflow and vice versa?
Your earliest response is highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    SMTP

    Hi SMTP,
First of all, as I mentioned action is nothing but an executable work item which is designed in the workflow itself. In other words, Workflow is like your OOPS class. At run time, workflow instances are created just like objects of classes. Now, the steps designed in the workflow are called TASKS and the instances of tasks are called WORKITEMS. Now, the work items where any user action is required are called executable work items. ANd the work items where no user action is required (for example, sending an email in background) are called non-executable work items.
Whether to go with development of workflow or not depends upon your business scenario. If your requirement is only to send an email and you find any BAdi or exit where in you can write your logic then there is no need of creating a workflow. If there is a defined business process with defined users and time lines, then you can go with the development of workflows.
Rest, the below link will help you in understanding basic concepts of workflow :
