Career from Systems to Database Administrator

Hi all,
I need some career advice. I want to persue my career as an Oracle Database Administrator and I have underwent a basic level of training on Oracle Database administration.However, I have been recently moved to a team which is into -- systems. And my work is mainly related to Active Directory,Exchange and managing servers.
I searched a lot about -- 'starting the career as an Oracle DBA' and found out that people generally start as Systems Admin/Unix Admin/Developer and then switch to DBA Admin. My work experience is less than 1 year. I would like to know-- should I continue with this Systems work and get some experience in System Admin to get into Oracle DBA Admin?
If so,then for how long should I continue with Systems before actually switching over to Database Administration? Moreover, should I do some certifications like MCSE while I am working in Systems? And when and how should I start my preparation for Oracle certifications?
Hope to get inputs from you all.
Thanks in advance

you have to have some earnings, if you are already at another area, you can take adavantage of being already hired somewhere, and you can start studing in parallel so you get acquinted with oracle. First kind of job you may find is a DBA at entry level, which lets you in a pretty difficult position, but there is no other way to start.
Download software and manuals and start practicing as much as you can. A lot of peaple I have seen here at entry level have taken this strategy:
- continue with current job
- start self-studing oracle from manuals
- installed oracle at a local pc/laptop (XE or EE)
- a lot of questions, lack of concepts, problems, bad configuration appear
- they take advantage of this forum to start troubleshooting and continue learning
- when they feel more comfortable with knowledge the make the OCA exam and later on OCP.
- either way, keep studying

  • Procedure to Insert PDF from FIle System to Database

    Hi ,
    I have a requirement to put the pdf files from our Local Machine or File system into Database table ..
    For that I have created a directory called "MY_PDF" with create and replace directory .
    Also , I have created a database table to store the files from Local machine FIle System directory ( MY_PDF) .
    I have created a procedure which takes 2 inputs ( ID and FIlename ) as parameters , this procedure when executes , it insert the file along with the ID in the database table .
    Procedure is as follows :
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE proc_load_a_file( p_id IN NUMBER, p_filename IN VARCHAR2 )
    AS
    l_blob BLOB;
    l_bfile BFILE;
    x VARCHAR2(1000);
    BEGIN
    x:=p_filename;
    INSERT INTO demo(id,theblob,filename) VALUES ( p_id, empty_blob() ,x)
    RETURNING theBlob INTO l_blob;
    UPDATE demo
    SET locater =l_blob where id=p_id;
    l_bfile := bfilename( 'MY_FILES', p_filename );
    DBMS_LOB.FILEOPEN( l_bfile );
    DBMS_LOB.LOADFROMFILE( l_blob, l_bfile,
    DBMS_LOB.getlength( l_bfile ) );
    DBMS_LOB.fileclose( l_bfile );
    COMMIT;
    END;
    Now , my requirement is not to insert one one file each and every time when I execute the procedure .
    My requirement is first to check the File system Directory (MY_PDF) . If
    there is any pdf file in the directory then it will call that procedure and insert that file into the database untill no files found in the dorectory ( MY_PDF) .
    I am not getting the idea how to do this ..
    Please someone provide some valueable inputs .. so that I can finish it up .
    Thanks

    Suggest using the FlowElement.setStyle method to attach additional information about the image to the InlineGraphicElement that gets created.  Looking at the example code in the posted link you'll need to pass that data to the imageLoadComplete method.  The InlineGraphicElement can be found by saving interactionManager.absoluteStart before the graphic is inserted and then calling textFlow.findLeaf(savedAbsoluteStart).
    Hope that helps,

  • Moving the 80 Million records from Conversion database to System Test database (Just for one transaction table) taking too long.

    Hello Friends,
    The background is I am working as conversion manager and we move the data from oracle to SQL Server using SSMA and then we will apply the conversion logic and then move the data to system test ,UAT and Production.
    Scenario:
    Moving the 80 Million records from Conversion database to System Test database (Just for one transaction table) taking too long. Both the databases are in the same server.
    Questions are…
    What is best option?
    IF we use the SSIS it’s very slow and taking 17 hours (some time it use to stuck and won’t allow us to do any process).
    I am using my own script (Stored procedure) and it’s taking only 1 hour 40 Min. I would like know is there any better process to speed up and why the SSIS is taking too long.
    When we move the data using SSIS do they commit inside after particular count? (or) is the Microsoft is committing all the records together after writing into Transaction Log
    Thanks

  • Conversion from system to demo database

    I have a EPM9.0 database in peoplesoft . How can I check if the database is system or demo instance?
    I need a demo database but if I have a system database then can I convert a system into demo database?
    If yes then how to do it? Can i just run the datamover script and convert.
    If not then I will have completely build up a new EPM database demo version

    Basically, there is no difference between a DEMO and SYSTEM database, but data.
    If you are not in multilingual config, when you create a SYSTEM database, one datafile is imported, $PS_HOME\data\hcengs.db amd when you create a DEMO database, two datafiles are imported, $PS_HOME\data\hcengs.db and $PS_HOME\data\hcengl.db
    If there is no sample data in a SYSTEM database, there are a lot in a DEMO database. You could check the user account list to see easily if there is sample account or not.
    To move from a DEMO to a SYSTEM database, it could be really paintful since you have to remove a lot of data from many tables (not only the sample user account).
    If a development database could be based on a DEMO database, a UAT or production one must be built on a SYSEM database. To change, the most simple way is to create a SYSTEM database from scratch, and move the users projects from the DEMO to the SYSTEM database.
    To move from a SYSTEM to a DEMO, it is the same, much more sure to create a DEMO database from scratch and move the projects.
    Or you could try to import a dms data file specific to the DEMO $PS_HOME\data\hcengl.db, but it could overwrite your own modifications or so, I didn't test a move from SYSTEM to DEMO with such running.

  • Who can delete user in OIM apart from System Administrator.

    Hi All,
    In OIM 9.1.x apart from System Administrator who else can delete user? Can we configure something so that only particular User/Group can delete user?
    Thanks.

    Hi AGIAM,
    Sorry I can't recall the exact way to configure it (dont have a 9.1 instance running), but you can try adding the user to the OIM Groups with privileges to manage/delete the users.

    HI
    1.Do i need to configure the CCMS_OnAlert_Email, for every alert that you have, in the satellite system?
    Best thing I would say is to copy method ( RZ21 --> Method --> Method definition )CCMS_OnAlert_Email to Z_CCMS_OnAlert_Email in Solman and assign this auto reaction to  MTE class of satellite systems.
    2. How do i configure this out of solution manager, and bypassing the satellite system?
    You have to install/configure sapccm4x( for monitoring abap ) on satellite systems by giving details about Solution manager. Then the alert will be sent to Solution manager from satellite system and the configured auto reaction will send mails .

  • Database administration.

    I dont have any database experience and I would like to start with a possible out come to become a database administrator not necessarily a programmer. As you can imagine what I would appreciate is any information on where to start with Oracle databases administrator since they are considered a stable and reliable products. Books either online or by purchasing them, opinions etc. are most welcomed. I have a background in programming with Java and system administrator but not with databases. To that end, any help on how to proceed to my database learning venture even as to suggest that I could get the OCA certification, after seeing the cert paths of Oracle would be appreciated.

    First step was the right step, forum participation. You can post here all your requests, questions, setup, configuration, references, and answer are at a very high level.
    I would suggest you this:
    . Download Oracle RDBMS software, you can start easy with the Oracle XE edition, it is lightweight and very easy to setup and use. For advanced features you may want to use the Enterprise Edition.
    . Download de SQLDeveloper, it will provide you a very good tool to access, database.
    . Download the manual to have it handy in case you require it and you are offline.
    . Start with the two-days dba manual http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14196/toc.htm and start practicing from here
    . Once you are involved with this dba topic you can proceed to specific points, as described at the Certification Exam Guide. This way you'll start getting involved with very specific aspects of database administration and you'll be preparing for the OCA exam at the same time.
    . Practice - practice - practice ... and ah! keep practicing.
    . Questions, issues, and so on, we all here will be gladly to answer.

  • Steps for delete material from system

    hi , all sap pp experts
          in material master by using mm06 we give deletion flag for material but system can't delete that material. So is it possible to delete material from system? if yes then please tell the sequence for this process
    thanks in advance
    regards
    Nitin Nerkar

    Before Archiving the Material Master the materials need to be flagged for deletion in T Code MM06/MM16.
    Archiving the materials is done thro T Code SARA. All the SAP archive functions are shown in SARA. Choose the corresponding SAP archive object, hit enter and the archive administration menu will be shown.
    When a material is no longer required in a company or plant, you can archive and delete the material master record.
    Before a material master record can be archived and deleted, other objects (such as purchasing documents) that refer to this material must themselves be archived. You can see which objects these are and the dependencies between them in the network graphic.
    Archiving object MM_MATNR for archiving material master records.
    To archive the material master, first go to transaction SARA
    Type in a variant name and click Maintain. (Tick the Test Mode for archive simulation).
    Save the variant.
    Maintain the Start date and Spool parameters and click execute.
    Click Go to Job Overview to check the archive status.
    To do a permanent delete, click Delete button.
    Maintain the Archive Selection, Start date and Spool parameters.
    Click Test Session for testing or click execute to start the deletion program.
    Click Go to Job Overview to check the delete status.
    This need to be done carefully and better to first do it in testing client.
    After archiving those materials will not be displayed in reports unless categorically selected
    Note: SARA is a general transaction where you can archive all types of records using respective archiving object

    Certainly it is unusual that you can still see the tables available in your MS Access database but cannot see the columns? I am assuming you are configuring an Open Statement step and are trying to use the ring-control to select columns from your table?
    Can you tell me more about the changes you made to your file when you 'changed' it with MS Access? What version of Access are you using? What happens if you try and manually type in an 'Open Statement Dialog's SQL string such as...
    "SELECT UUT_RESULT.TEST_SOCKET_INDEX, UUT_RESULT.UUT_STATUS, UUT_RESULT.START_DATE_TIME FROM UUT_RESULT"
    Is it able to find the columns even if it can't display them? I am worried that maybe you are using a version of MS Access that is too new for the version of TestSt
    and you are running. Has anything else changed aside from the file you are editing?
