Career Growth--

hi
I have 11 years of experience and have worked in role of production dba, PL/SQL developer. I have shifted from being oracle production dba to full time pl/sql developer. I have more interest in solving oracle related issues.
as my experience is increasing my seniors expect me to shift to functional or project management role.. but my interest is towards oracle database..
i do not understand how should i go ahead. i do not want to do monotonous work.
please advise.
regards,

Although it's somewhat of a natural progression (a DBA is a technical manager, really), there are a couple of other career options you could pursue rather than moving into team management.
You could become a data architect: you could be the one who knows how x is linked with y and how it all fits together for the business.
You could become a DBA 'specialist' or 'guru': in our team, we have all senior DBAs but we all specialize in certain areas - Exadata/DW, RMAN, Data Guard, OEM. You could find a speciality that the company REALLY needs (for instance, I bet they REALLY need someone who knows backup and restores inside out, front-to-back and upside-down).
I do know of a lot of DBAs who have got 20 years under their belt and they're simply not cut out for management. They're excellent DBAs, they love doing their job and don't really have any wish to move 'up'.

  • SAP Security Career Growth

    Hi Gurus,
Could u please provide Sap Security Consultant Career Growth

I would suggest that a good start would be not asking for points on the security forum if you wish to be taken seriously.
You should also aim to develop the following:
    - Good understanding of SAP Authorisation Concept (lots of people don't get the basics right)
    - Have an overview of the main business processes
    - Understand risk management from a business and a technical perspective (understand not just the how, but the why's of security)
    - Appreciation of SAP Audit.  If you don't understand what they are looking for then how can you start to secure your system.
You can also look at SAP courses ADM940, ADM950, ADM960
    Hope that helps

  • Testing Career: Is there any SAP career growth???

    Dear SAP Experts,
I am SAP SD Certified fresher, completed certification in Oct.2013.
I joined one of the reputed MNC in June 2014.I was happy thinking that I got entry in SAP but soon my happiness converted into sorrowness because after spending 40 days in the company I got testing project.
In this project my responsibility is to take care testing part.Client is rolling out SAP regionwise and outsourced testing part to my company but there is not much exposure to SAP.
Now there are numerous questions in my mind:
    1) Shall I continue this role or search a new job(but getting new job would very tough as I am fresher)?
    2) Is this testing project affect my SAP career?
    3) Going forward what are different things I should learn so that I will get good hike after 2 yrs if I continue this role.
    4) Shall I join any institute which will give me insight about support or implementation project so that I can show in next intw(after 2 yrs) even if I worked in testing project i know process of implementation or I know the types of tickets and all other stuff
    Kindly guide me.
    Regards,
    Abhijeet.

    Hi Abhijeet,
This is sad part but I don't want to demotivate you more as this is your first job in SAP career.
"Which road you take that will lead your growth".  The problem is if you are starting as testing career then you will move on to same testing roles and will not get any SD implementation or support opportunity.  Just ask them, would you able to be part of Support or Implementation project.
Positive side: Sometimes if your project likes you, then you will move into SAP implementation project down the line, due to increasing demand of skills in your project.  I have seen many people in the past and recently projects recruited as testing guy then moved into functional roles on implementation.
Testing may be ok in the beginning but do not stay longer because your profile not worthy in future.  Look for better opportunity if they ask you stay more than 6 or 1 year in same testing roles.
Career Path for Testing - Test Analyst, Senior Test Analyst -> Testing Manager -> Testing Director
Career Path for Functional Consultant - Functional Consultant -> Senior Functional Consultant -> Functional Lead -> Solution Architect or Project Manager -> Programme Manager

  • Help me in my Career-Growth

    hii friends,
Currently I'm working as Pl/sql developer, I'd like to improve my technical skills...I need your valuable suggestions.I'm thinking of to learn informatica,congnos..is it worth doing for a pl/sql developer???will it help my career??I'm getting some suggestions to go for BPEL and Oracle BI tools.I'm in a turmoil to make a decision.I dont want to make a mistake at dis point of my career.Plz help me out .

    Hi Neha,
Neha, first congratulation on completing  3 yrs in ABAP. Well most people who have worked in ABAP for a good 3 to 6 years always prefer something new in their routine (want to explore new arena of SAP). Do worry Neha your not the only one who have thought this way.
Well Neha, I can suggest you few modules but that wouldn't really help you out. What I feel is it's best that you find out which areas you are good at and willing to explore (and have got exposed in these past 3 yrs like SD / MM).
Few of my colleague have upgraded their skills and moved from ABAP to  ABAP-SD consultant. These people tell me that it gives them a broader view of their company and its processes going on. They tell me, moving to SD was really a good decision they made on their side.
Well, I would advice you to plan something like what my colleague have done and hope that line may take you where wanted to go. </p>

  • Career as SAP analyst/consultant

    Hi,
I am exploring the option to build my carrier in SAP analyst/consultant field.
I have more than 5 years of experience of sales and business management in automotive industry. At the same time I have worked on or used SAP as a business user for these 5 years.
I am quiet conversant with the business process, material movement, orders/approval flows etc.
I have the desire and will but I am looking for some answers to convenience myself that it will be a good decision to move in this direction financially and in terms of career growth also. It would be a big help if you could answer the questions below, before I make my final decision. I would request you SAP Gurus to please guide me.
Some of the agencies (AtoS and some others) I have got in touch with to discuss this certification have suggested doing SAP SD or MM certification, keeping my experience in view. If I do it what is your guess how soon I could find a job with this certification.
What kind of salary will I be able to attract if I do get a job. Currently I am getting good salary by auto industry standards (around $15K). As per the information I have got the starting salaries in these roles are some times less than half of what I am getting now.
Finally how fast is the growth in this industry? Let us say I do the certification spend some $500 and join a company with salary less than half of my current. After doing this, as per your experience how soon will I be able to reach or exceed the salary I would have been getting otherwise (assume I perform fairly well in my SAP role ;-).
So finally should I go ahead with the certification?
Rather than an instinctive one, I want to make a well thought over, planned and fairly well estimated decision. I am looking forward to your valuable answers.
    Thanks

I am trying to reply all the bullets in your post one by one.
Some of the agencies (AtoS and some others) I have got in touch with to discuss this certification have suggested doing SAP SD or MM certification, keeping my experience in view. If I do it what is your guess how soon I could find a job with this certification.
for training and certification you can go to any SAP authorized institute , you can find many depends upon which country you are presently staying.
What kind of salary will I be able to attract if I do get a job. Currently I am getting good salary by auto industry standards (around $15K). As per the information I have got the starting salaries in these roles are some times less than half of what I am getting now.
if you are already at $15K  (1,50,000 US Dollar if i correctly understand)  then you are earning much higer then a SAP consultant having a decade experience in SAP. Better look for management job. If salary is the criteria.
Finally how fast is the growth in this industry? Let us say I do the certification spend some $500 and join a company with salary less than half of my current. After doing this, as per your experience how soon will I be able to reach or exceed the salary I would have been getting otherwise (assume I perform fairly well in my SAP role ;-).
    refer the above one
So finally should I go ahead with the certification?
Certification is optional , if you just have user level experience you may not be knowing all what comes within an module, i still recommend training as it give you all back ground about SAP and you can understand most of the master data piece to create a right foundation for a module.
    Hope this will help you.
    Thanks

  • ABAPer's next Career step

I am working as an ABAPer mostly in SAP AFS,I would like to know what is the career growth I can Expect as a ABAPer in next 6 month, and what should be my next step?
I am confuse whether to  remain on technical side only or move to functional side?or I should go with BW or SAP NW , BI ...?
At the same time I don't want leave my knowledge of ABAP ie I want to move such field where my knowledge will be useful for me.
There are too many modules in SAP Functional also , if I moves to Functional side then which is best modules to work with in future ?
What you think is best suited for me ?
    Suggest me right way .
Thank you for your valuable time given to me .
    Thanks & regards
    Rajwant

    Hi Rajwant,
These days the growing trend for developers is to have knowledge of JAVA. These days many SAP products are being JAVA enabled and for that having knowledge of JAVA is will be very useful. Also WebDynpro is catching market at full speed so you can update yourself on this part as well.
Regarding other functional modules, it all depends on your area of interest. It would not be fair enough to suggest on the basis of this question that which module will suit you best. Have a look on the different SAP modules, read its basic descritpion and check which one will suit you most as per your technical competency.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAP_R/3
However these days CRM is catching up the market and you can have a good look on it depth before deciding your next step.

  • Career in BPC

    Hi,
I am having around 1 year experience in SEM BCS BPS and approx 3 years in SAP FI, now I would like to learn BPC.
Is it a right decision, kindly advise whether BPC will help me in career growth?
    Regards,
    Mohammed Kalim

Yes, it is the right choice for sure. BPC alongwith BW has a very good potential in terms of career growth. Some people believe BPC is getting saturated or already saturated. For that matter, any module is saturated, yet has openings. BPC, as a full timer is better as I believe that consulting projects are very small in duration and hence need to on look out all the time.

  • Career in SAP TM

    Dear ,
I am working as a SAP SD consultant since 5 years and I am very interested to undergo SAP TM training.
Little worried what would be the career growth and scope in the market 5 years down the line.
Please seeking your suggetion or guidelines.
    Thanks & regards
    Param

    Hello Ksaran K,
I completely agree with Eduardo Chagas but I have added some points below.
You should be familar with sap SD and have some coding knowledge of ABAP.
    Why SAP SD?
Because TM is a stand alone system as well as integrated with SAP R/3. If you will know SD then you will get some idea about how business prosesses are implemented in sap, some basic concept which required in SAP TM.There is some intergration requred to connect Tm and ECC for shipper scenario. You can find some good documents, threads where experts have given their views and solutions. You can watch some videos from you tube which will give idea to your sap knowledge.
    3? Why ABAP?.
To be a good Functional owner it will better to have some abap knowledge. I feel advance process areas like TM and EWM, there is alittle boundary between technical and functional role.If you know abap then in some cases you can check your own whether your thought/design will work fine or not.

  • Career in SCM (APO)

    Hi friends,
I am MM consultant, am interested in SAP SCM, but wanna know where exactly will i fit, if it is APO then which module in APO should i choose.
How is the career in SNC/ICH...?
Please suggest me for my career growth.
    regards
    Murali

    Hi Murali,
As you are MM Guy, I would suggest you can think of taking your
career plan to SRM.  That should be your primary focus.
In SCM if you want to plan your career,  you can have it secondary
    focus in SNC.
    This will do.
    Please confirm

  • Career question

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask this, but I was wondering if anyone had any comments/insight/suggestions for me. I'm about to graduate with a Computer Science degree and will begin my job search within the next month or so. Here is my situation: I am very comfortable with Java and have some experience with .jsp. I am not very familiar with .NET or .asp. However, most of the jobs I see out there require VB, .asp, etc. experience. I was planning on getting a Java certification soon, but if the job market is poor for those skills, I don't want to put the effort and money into the exam. What are your thoughts on the current market and what people are looking for? Should I continue on my Java path or begin the journey into the Microsoft world? I'm a relatively fast learner, so I could probably pick up on .NET fairly quickly, but I'm just not sure. From what I've seen, I really don't like VB, so if I choose that path, it will only be based on obtaining a job. Thanks.
    ike2010
p.s. I realize there will be a bias towards Java here, but thought I would ask anyway. I don't hold an alliance with any company, so my decision won't be based on anything like that. I'm strictly looking for money and long-term career growth.

A few random thoughts. All just MAO, of course.
    * As a newbie in the job market, and a rather sucky job market at the moment, you're probably better off not being too picky. Take what you can get, as along as it's sort of generally in line with your overall long-term goals, and an area that's likely to have some future life. So if you only know and are only interested in hardcore number-crunching for massive theoretical physics calculation, then neither Java nor .NET is likely to hold much promise for you. On the other hand, if you're interested in general application development, business systems, developing tool sets, etc., then either one would probably serve you well. Neither is likely to vanish any time soon.
    * Nobody can really predict which--if either--will be "the dominant force" five years from now. A solid background in either will allow you to adapt to the other if and when the time comes. The principles you learn will be far more important than the particular language, platform, environment, or tool set.
    * Skip the cert for now. The chances of it making a difference in you getting a job or not seem pretty small. The question of "what's the cert really worth" comes up a LOT on these forums, and most of the experienced folks agree that simply the fact that somebody has the cert (especially the lower lever Programmer--as opposed to Developer or Architect cert) just doesn't carry that much weight. On the other hand, studying for the cert mightn't be a bad idea, if you've got some spare time. You'll probably learn some things that will be useful both in landing a job and in doing that job.
    * Unless you totally despise one or the other, or are totally incompetent in one or the other, try not to lock yourself in at all. Chances are you'll end up having to work in both environments over the course of your career. Adaptability is extremely important. You may tend to get shoehorned into jobs and projects that align with your past skills, but being able to speak knowledgeably outside of your "main" area, and being able to interact with and occasionally write or debug code outside your "main" area will make you very, very valuable.
