  • Career Guidance

Hi! Pl give me career guidance as a Oracle Professional. I have following details:
    1. OCP (developer track) in 2002.
    2. MCA (persuing)
    3. Maintaining/Developing Oracle based ERP (Oracle9i,Forms/Reports 6i).
    4. Total Exp in Forms/Repots is 08 years.
I m confused to join the latest Oracle Products.
Now a days, Oralce has many latest products. So pl guide/advice me best Oracle Product to
    suit my experience.
    Oracle E-Business Suite ? Oracle Financials ? Oracle Apps ? Oracle 11g Form/Report ? Oralce 11g Java Developer ? Oracle 11g Java with ADF ? ....etc.
    Thanks & Regards.
    Sukhvinder Singh

    Hi,
It's depends with your final goal.
    01. If you want to be a good programmer then you might need to think about moving in to Java with Oracle (Ex: ADF Faces). Here its good to move from Oracle Forms and Reports because most of the companies start migrating their Forms/Reports applications into different technologies. Mainly to Java. Even Oracle Corporation itself provide more guidance for this.
    02. Oracle E-Business Suite is one of the best ERP application. But again this application has many modules. So if you wnat to be a application specialist then you have to deside some area (Ex: HR, GL) and then expert on this. Because application specialist need to have in-depth knowledge in some area.
    03. Oracle E-Business Suite has another area for those who build new reports, integrate with other applications. For this area you don't need in-depth knowledge. (But you need to have some knowledge in those modules). But here you need to have very good PL/SQL and Report Experience. Because you have experience in Reports and PL/SQL , you need to get some knowledge in E-Business Suite and other integration techniques. (This area is always depends with the current trend. So you need to do more research on it and find whether your living area has any demand for e-Business Suite)
    04. Oracle Warehouse Builder is another good area. Because these days almost all the companies start using historical details and most of the companies understand the important to have a data warehouse application. So its a good thing to get to know warehouse builder and related ETL technologies as well.
I just gave MY OWN IDEA with my experience. Someone else can have other ideas (sometimes against the things I mentioned here.). So all comments are welcome!!
    Thanks,

  • SAP Career Guidance

    Hi SAP Seniors/Experts,
This has reference to SAP Career Guidance.
Let me brief you, I m student of Victoria University and pursuing Master of Business in ERP at Singapore. In this course they are covering 7 modules of SAP which would be overall view of SAP system.
I found that each module demands in depth research wherein the university is going to provide general views on each module.
I would like to have your advice on SAP career journey. I do understood that i need to gain mastery in any one module to start employment with any organization. As such you seniors have vast experience in SAP, would you pl. advise me which module should pick up to gain in-depth knowledge looking towards to future demand. I m likely to finish Master of Business in ERP by Jan 2009.
    Seeking your guidance.
    Sincerely,
    Devang Nandha
"Together, Transform Business Process by leveraging Information Technology to Grow and Excel in Business".

    Dear Devang Nandha,
    A very relevant question.
I feel that you should gain good knowledge in one of the modules. Please do not select the module based on the popularity. Select the module based on your work expereince and your interest. Trust me there is enough in any module to learn and to contribute.
Devang, you are in a very good position as you have the choice of selecting the module. Make the most of this opportunity. For any specific query, please let me know.
Welcome to SAP world and best of luck for your future endeavors.

  • Need career guidance

    Hi,
I am a PLSQL developer and i wud like to know if i should also possess unix scripting knowledge..
I wud liketo know the career prospects of PLSQL and i wud aslo like to know if i can switch to datawarehousing or Oracle APPs...
    Thanks in advance.

My opinion is that a solid basic working knowledging of unix shell scripting is essential - even if you wind up working only on Windows. That latter is because of the need to know how to do things repeatedly and consistently, one of the biggest problems I see in those environs (people overestimate their ability to do so manually, often extremely so). Places that have multiple enviroments (which is just about everywhere nowadays) often have unix style tools on Windows for this reason, as well as to ease transitions between environments. It also provides the basis for other general tools and scripting languages like perl, and even SQL things like general expressions.
As far as the other career advice - it's a big field, find your own strengths and weaknesses, play to your strengths and improve your weaknesses. Identifying the next big thing is impossible, so be prepared to ride whatever comes along for the short term, and change direction when necessary. As your career moves along, it is entirely likely your outlook will change over time. At one point, I was amazed and spooked by the realization I was being paid the big consultant bucks for writing in a 4GL essentially the same first program I wrote 20+ years before as a Jr. programmer in BASIC+. Pay especial attention to understanding relational theory, it will help even outside the R realm.
Doing things just for the money is often a mistake, but sometimes "obsolete" stuff that you have become comfortable with winds up having big paydays as everyone follows shiny things and the skill becomes scarce. Don't think that will happen too soon with PL, but good PL people are scarce already, especially those who understand when not to use PL.

  • Pre-newbie help! Computer guidance needed so wanted to ask the pros (you)

    Hi all,
I am a jewelry designer - have been for over 25 years (pencil to paper) and want expand my knowledge and learn Illustrator and Photoshop. I want to come out of the dark ages regarding HOW I design to become more efficient AND hopefully increase my marketability. I need a new computer so figured now was a perfect time to ask the experts in this field as to what system would be a good into place to start. Laptop preferred so I can learn wherever I am. I figure by the time I am doing well, it may be time to upgrade.  Cost is a factor but I realize I am going to need to invest a little more on the front end to get the proper equipment.
While I am here, where is a good place to start regarding which illustrator to go with.
I thank you in advance for your help.
    Jill

I am a designer for a larger Mfg company - not just someone who tinkers in her own studio (although that part is the best).  Hand drawings can be scanned in and traced.  It is a way to get a more accurate diamond weight and estimated metal weight to determine whether it is what is wanted BEFORE it is given to our CAD team.  All of which are imperative to fit within certain price point targets. Details (scroll thickness, wall thickness, prong details, etc) are made much more clear for the CAD operator who may or may not have any design background.  It will also allow me to start with one element and take that element to make a pendant.  Then copy that exact element to lay out earrings (maybe flip for a left and right).  Then copy further to lay our a bracelet....whatever it may be.  Any tweaking that I want to do can be more automatic then re-drawing everything in order to compare.  .
In addition, computers (illustration, Photoshop and certainly CAD - typically Rhino/Matrix in the US) are mainstream - unlike when I started.  Not as many people hand draw so I am lucky in that regard. Certainly not as many people carve and cast wax as they once did to make a model.  The CAD is loaded into a 3D printer, cast and voila - a master model.
I may or may not want to move to higher caliber companies as I continue to develop my career.  Many of the larger companies I casually have my eye on ALL require Illustrator/Photoshop of their designer.  Some actually say that CAD is encouraged but not necessary.  Seems backwards to me but.....what do I know//
That's basically it in a nutshell.  The schooling I am not really concerned about.  I am looking for guidance on a suitable system that I will need at home (because I need a new computer anyway) that would allow me to have what I need eventually loading these systems on and learning what I hope to learn.

  • Guidance needed please for architecting a scheduled application process (Worker Role vs. VM Role)

I'm close to putting all of the pieces together for an Azure Cloud Services solution that I want to build.
My goal is to build a .NET Library (or perhaps a Windows Service or even a Console Application) that will run once a day to execute dynamic queries against an Azure SQL DB.
There would be 1-x numbers of these query sets that will need to be run during the process, and after each query set an email will be sent out containing data from the query results (which shouldn't be terribly large or processor intensive) to an email
recipient specific to that data set.  I plan on using an assigned Office 365 Mailbox as the sender account and email recipients would all be in the same Exchange organization.
I haven't decided on the emailing API yet, but it may require dependencies to be installed on Windows Server (e.g. the MAPI subsystem, AKA the Mail applet in Control Panel - so I can use Redemption which is a third-party replacement for the Outlook Object
Model that doesn't require Outlook to be installed) unless I go with Exchange Web Services or the Office 365 REST APIs.
So my main question is what's more appropriate, a VM or a Worker Role?
Since the processing should only take 5-10 minutes to complete, I'd like to minimize the uptime of the VM or Worker Role and be able to turn it on when the scheduled time occurs, and turn it off when
    the processing is done.
I'm also trying to understand how to fit in either the Azure Scheduler Service or the Windows Task Scheduler in the OS to auto-run my .NET application and/or Worker Role/VM.
    Any guidance would be appreciated!

    Hello Eric,
There is currently no Option for automatically deploying an Azure Role, running it and then Shutting it down or Deleting it. That kind of functionality is possible using the
Windows Azure service Management API which is used by  the Windows Azure PowerShell cmdlets.

  • Guidance needed for psunami plugin!

hello everyone,i have to make a logo come out from between the waves created by the psunami plugin.any kind of help regarding how to do that would be highly appreciated.
    regards,
    Abhishek

There are a bunch of tricks for Psunami. You can use the image maps to displace the water and to lay the logo on the water. The displacement works fairly well to simulate a boat wake or a shoreline. The problem with using image maps as displacement is that they aren't flat. IOW, they follow the flow of the waves.
The key to making Psunami work well is to make sure that you pick Realistic or better for the Render mode, and when working with image maps to displace and texture, to keep the Coarse Grid and Fine Grid at small enough values to avoid funky artifacts. You'll also need to set the Ocean Detail to at the very least Video Detail. Don't expect a fast render.
I'd suggest that you set up your project with the logo as an image map set to Displace using the Alpha of your logo with the intensity set to 0. Then when you've got it raised out of the water enough, split the layer (Ctrl/Cmnd + D) and change the image map to Displace and Texture Below. Overlap the two copies by adjusting the out and in points so the wave action matches. This would fade in the logo color in like it's coming from below the water. As the logo rises farther out of the water split and overlap the layers and pick Texture Above or Texture On to achieve the look you want.
The Logo is going to bend just like the water, but the color will be there. If you need to morph the logo to a flat surface then you'll have to match the angle with another copy of the logo as a 3D layer then carefully transition between the two. With Psunami you'll never be able to make it look like the water is running off the logo. You can fake it fairly well.
If you need to have the water run off the surface my suggestion would be to do this in a 3D app. Blender (free open source) has some pretty good water effects and there are a bunch of tutorials. Depending on the realism you're trying to achieve you might want to composite some actual footage, some 3D, and some Psunami. This is definitely not a one click, one setting, one layer, two keyframe project.
Just for fun I set up a project using CS5. It took about 5 minutes because I did a lot of this kind of stuff a long time ago. You'll find the file HERE. I hope it helps. The resulting image looks like this:
As you can see the logo moving along with the water and it still looks submerged. It takes a bunch more work to make it look like it has move up and out of the water.

  • Career guidance please help

i have 13 years of exprience as hardware and networking person an science graduate.
8 months back i have gone through instructor led training for oracel 9i dba track( all four titles sql, funda I, funda II, per & tuning). I am looking for a job but found that all companies need oracle apps dba and very very few need 9i dba.(plus experience no freshers)
so should i persue OCP or do the instructor led training for oracle apps dba or else sun solaris admin.
which one will fetch me a job and secure my future in long term.suggest a growth path.
    please guide me
    thanks
    anil M.

I wrote a long article about this in my blog last year.
I think if you're looking for a secure career in the long term then stick with networking, as every computing architecture for the foreseeable future is going to be a network. But I can understand that the thrill of crawling under desks sticking cables into hard-to-get-at ports might pall after a while. So by all means stick at the Oracle DBA line if you want: just bear in mind that it is easier to move into a new line of work by shifting sideways from an existing job than it is to persuade an employer to take on a learner.
    Two last thoughts:
    (1) Oracle may be a legacy technology. Which is not to say it's not a solid, good product. It just cannot maintain its dominance of the RDBMS market forever, and of course the RDBMS market is not guaranteed either.
    (2) Have you considered moving into application servers? I would have thought webmastery was a better fit with a background in networks.
    Good luck, APC

  • Simple game guidance needed

    Hi all,
I could use a little guidance with a project I am currently doing at college. We have to use Java / NetBeans 4.0 to create a game where some targets appear and the player gains points by clicking on them. I have created the vast majority of the code and it works reasonably well so far.
The part I need help with is that I would like my targets to move around, probably using threads. Currently my targets are JButtons in a JPanel, but I cannot get them to move. I have tried using setLocation() and setBounds() to no avail. I have tried different layouts such as Null and Absolute, but that didn't make much difference.
So I have been playing around with the idea of using sprites, perhaps.
Does anybody have any suggestions to offer? I have been digging around looking for examples that I can work from that I could perhaps re-work for my own needs, but none of them seems to have what I need. Perhaps someone could mention classes / functions that I ought to be using?

I would use Graphics 2D rather than Swing.I'm no gaming expert but I'm not sure why you would use Graphics2D for this. Sure I guess if you are moving squares or circles around the screen you could do this. But what if you are using actual images, like an image of Duke or Bart Simpson? How would you draw these images using graphics?
I would like my targets to move around, probably using threads.Anyway, for the animation, if you do use images you should use a Swing Timer. Here is a simple example: [http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=57&threadID=631379]

i want to make my career in oracle which should be more dynamic, learning and creative not like in production support which have monotonus life.
could anyone please guide me about what career path i should choose ?
DBA , i have heard is montonous job too with same routine backups,no creativity with nightshifts and all, but it is more stable as people said. I have no experiance of it.
second devolper track in sql/pl sql having its own limitations like less demand, less financial growth etc. and people usually wants to shift in other area like BO

i want to make my career in oracle which should be more dynamic, learning and creative not like in production support which have monotonus life.I wish it were monotonous! When it costs $$/second for production to stop, it can get very exciting very fast!

second devolper track in sql/pl sql having its own limitations like less demand, less financial growth etc. and people usually wants to shift in other area like BOThere is about 10X more demand for developers than administrators over the long term. Various sub-specialties are hot at various times. But that isn't as important as knowing what excites you.

5)Others (thats all i know, please add some others if they are creative )
    Problem area:
1)iam really confused now which way to choose development or support? Most people find development much more exciting. But that depends on what you like and what your skill set is and the support environment. I once had a support job that I loved, until it simply became overwhelming in volume. I've seen support people in jobs that I just pitied, they were so bad. DBA is my real love, what's yours? I have a dev/support/admin job, so even though most work isn't what I would choose, I still get to do what I find exciting. It took a lot of experiences to get to this point, though.
2)how to jump in other company on what basis after total experience of 2 years? Since iam in prod support they will hire me for the same againThat is true, headhunters and HR departments want those with 2 years experience in a specific skill set, because they are cheaper. The trick is to find an environment where you can move to what you want. For many people, that is a development environment, especially if you can find a mentor that can help you move in the direction you want. Of course, you need to define that direction. Life throws all sorts of opportunities at you at random times, you need to be prepared to seize them when they come.
3)How could i get to others areas like CRM,BO datawarehouse, apps ?As they more demanding and good learning and future pathDevelopment and implementation are about it. They all have a future path, some are very boring. What's boring to me may be exciting to you.
4)what to do right now at this position to enhance my skill set in this field (What to learn? )Look at the sites that post job ads in your area. You need a critical eye to translate into what they really want, but it becomes obvious what is hot. Of course, you need to know what will be hot in a couple of years, but if you see what is hot now, you can pick up on those in a couple of years when something else is hot, and eventually catch up.

    Hi Leon,
Thanks for your quick revert, but just wondering if Banking domain is good for FI/Co, as I guess it has more to do with Finance and not Retail Banking, I in the mean time searched another Module for Banking Industry called IS- Banking..I think, this module will be in line with the Banking Exp but whats the demand of this module in Banking sector that has to be seen!!
    Thanks for your help!
