Career in SAP after 42 Years

Dear Experts,
I'm in a dilemma over entering into domain of SAP at 42 years age.
I'm a BCom Degree holder working in a IT company in Finance Department having 10 years of experience in Finance only.  I am in AP Function.  I am now 42 years planning to change my career to SAP as a Consultant
Is this a right decision at this age.
Can anyone please guide me through the various options available in SAP finance and the career prospects
Thanks in advance!
PK

PK,
In SAP FI probably there is a chance of getting into the role of a consultant; getting a job and flourishing (saying on the basis of your strong domain experience).
But in general, 40+ it is an uphill to start a Functional career, office dynamics, age and ego clashes etc. etc. have made many experienced people leave SAP and return back to domain.
If you desire is strong and will persevere, then by all means go for it.

Need advice on Career in SAP after completing 9 yrs in IT mainly in Telecommunication Domain with BMC Remedy Tool knowledge.
Which Module of SAP I can learn and get into as I have Tool based knowledge in BMC Remedy and fair knowledge in SQL, as I come from non-IT background. What are career prospect after completing  any SAP module now will my previous experience will be taken into account?

    Prashant,
One of the reasons nobody has replied to you yet is that, this is a question with so little information provided.
    - There is no mention of your education background.
    - Your work background is very vague. What exactly did you do in Telecommunication Domain?
    - What exactly did you do in BMC Remedy? Where you just an end-user or did you do any background support work?
    - What exactly did you do in SQL? Did you work on it or did you just attend training?
    - Why do you want to jump into SAP? And what precisely you want to jump into in SAP?
    - What are your interests? Technical or Non-technical?
    - What's your career objective? Where do you want to be 5 years from now?
Without providing these information how can anyone help you? Picking a module and going with it makes no sense. What if you spend an insane amount of time and money learning a module in SAP (based on some random suggestions given here) and realize that this is not what you were looking for, or there is little scope for that module in the market? What then?
It's your career that you are planning. It definitely deserves more thought-process and planning to go into.

    Hello Adviser /expert,
Need a help / advice & guidance whether to switch on my Career in SAP-PM from core industries after spending my 09 years of experience in Core field that to in Maintenance.
As now i m thinking to do SAP-PM certified course from authorized SAP partner in India that to Pune.
So any one can suggest authorized SAP partner in India that to Pune.
My introduction (About myself): - I had done my Diploma in Mechanical and had total 09 years of experience in Mechanical Maintenance field that to in different manufacturing company such as Steel, Auto Ancillary & Cotton plant.
Whether its right decision to change my career from Core sector to SAP-PM..??
Is there very good scope in SAP-Pm for me after 09 years of Core Maintenance field..???
    Guide me
    Warm Regard
    Ravin

    Ravindra,
SAP PM is very niche Module, very in demand module, at the same time, being niche, getting into it and getting 1 implementation is also difficult.
your decision of joining SAP authorized training is the best option, as a certified consultant, you have more chances to get a break as fresher and you can continue working on it, else it would waste of your intellectual energy.
you just search sap.com training or email them or chat with them, they will give u the training center details,
but very less training classes are available. Try you will get lucky soon

  • I have completed my sap fico training, but i don't have any experience. I am an MBA finance having 6.6 years experience in accounts. Then can I get job in SAP field? & what type of course will do after MBA Finance? i want to do career in SAP Fico.

    Hi,
I have completed my sap fico training, but i don't have any experience. I am an MBA finance having 6.6 years experience in accounts. Then can I get job in SAP field? & what type of course will do after MBA Finance? i want to do career in SAP Fico.

    Hi Mahesh,
as you have more than 6 yrs. experience , you can opt for sap field but the main thing is that still if your job hunt will get ended, you will be considered as ab fresher, so are you ready for those bucks you will get after you will become a sap FI/CO consultant.
Please understand one thing , if you wnats to make your career in sap field, you are most welcome, when it comes to a job for you in SAP FI/CO , you have to consider in your brain only middle or small size industry, because as far as i concern no single major company will provide you exposure to work with them (if you will get, its your good fortune). So, if you have decided to take a step ahead in sap FI/CO i will not give you negative thinking, if you are ready to negotiate in your renumeration in starting your career, then you can take a foot ahead, but look a job in middle size or small companies only, i think through this you will get any exposure more easily.

Search for online training institutes on the net. Each of these gives a demo. By attending the demo make a selection of the institute.
On Youtube too, there are lots of SD training videos. Check those.

1 - give business examples, to explain functionalities
e.g. intercompany sale process: the process from his experience, what are the key benefits to business etc.

    2 - patience

he should sense how you are understanding the concepts, and take necessary actions

  • Want to make a career in SAP BI

    Hello,
This is Sanjay Sreedhar from Bangalore. Currently, I am working as a Senior Software Engineer on Java/J2EE and related technologies and have an overall experience of 2 and a half years.
I am not really interested to continue doing Java development and would like to move over to SAP.
Among the various modules of SAP, after gathering some information, I felt that SAP BI is the most suitable domain for me. I also have experience of 1 year in report design and development on oracle platform and I found this kind of work very interesting.
Since SAP BI primarily focuses on reporting and analysis, I strongly feel that I can have a good career in this domain.
My career expectations are as follows:
    a) Long-term career with stability and growth.
    b) Career in which I can feel secure and confident.
    c) Compensation as per experience and industry standards.
It would be really very helpful if I could please get some advice and guidance regarding career opportunities in SAP BI.

  • Career in SAP with no proir experience in ERP

    Hello everybody,
I am BS(Computer science) with 2 years of software development experience in J2EE. Although I do not have any experience with ERP or CRM or Supply Chain Management but whenever I heard people talking about ERP & CRM I really get excited.
So I have decided to move my career towards SAP. Furthermore, I am in Pakistan & Siemens offers some SAP certifications which are :
    <a href="http://www.siemens.com/index.jsp?sdc_p=c135fi1175331lmno1397033pst15uz3&sdc_sid=8060024212&">http://www.siemens.com/index.jsp?sdc_p=c135fi1175331lmno1397033pst15uz3&sdc_sid=8060024212&</a>
After some initial research I found out that SAP in Pakistan is adopted by Manufacturing industry therefore I believe that Siemens Pakistan would be good in ERP- SD training than any other SAP CRM or anything like that.
What do you recommend that how do I start my career in SAP? Either as functional i.e.ERP-SD or technical i.e. Netweaver or ABAP.
    Waiting for your helpful answers.
    Regards,
    Hashir Ahmed

    Many thanks Sai & Vinay.
Yes my experience is with J2EE but I'm ready to let go that.
Furthermore, I am more interested in functional role besides that I am not impatient nor looking for an easy route, Netweaver would be easier for me but do you see some one like me obtaining a good position in ERP-SD with on job training(after certification)?
Furthermore, what is exactly the role of person with Netweaver knowledge? Can I move from Netweaver to functional role if I even start from Netweaver & doing so would benefit me?
    Regards,
    Hashir Ahmed

  • What have I done? was it my mistake to choose a career in SAP as a Fresher?

I may sound depressed but this is the question that have been hitting my brain all the time. I have done training in SAP ABAP for 6 months.. and I was good in that while training my interest towards object oriented programming was increased because of that I have decided to learn WebDynpro ABAP and i did it completely satisfied with my performance during my training. Now I came to know that there are THE less opportunities for freshers in SAP my heart was broken but I didn't lessen my interest towards a good career in SAP every day I didn't stop practicing. But its been almost a year and I still didn't get any opportunity.
Many people suggested to put a fake and I totally disagreed with them . I would like to work in a real organisation with in an ethical manner.( I beg your pardon if there are any mistakes)
Please any moral support would be helpful..including suggestions thank you so much

    Hello Nagendra ,
Would like to share a bit of my very similar experience and  hope it will help you build up your confidence.
I was to be passed out by 2008 but due to some reasons I was able to make my BTech degree by 2009 only .
It was recession time and additionally my non serious nature at that time was piling up a big trouble ( Career Gap ) for me which I was not aware. Did many courses like php , .net and spent dad's bucks like nothing.
Then I came to Delhi for doing course in .net ( again ) but landed with SAP ABAP course from a SAP training institute.
Completed ABAP course of 6 months , used to practice frequently and was very serious this time but somewhere in my mind your same question also tickled me. Continued practicing at the institute itself and thereafter my tutor ( The Great Man whom I owe a Lot ) provided me chance to work in the same institute as tutor . I was not paid , I was to take some of the sections in ABAP which really brushed my knowledge.
I continued this for almost an year ( including my course period )
And one great day from my tutors reference I got a chance to work with a Sugar Manufacturing Company where Implementation was being carried out , they wanted an Internal ABAP Programmer also who could get familiarized with the Developments being carried out.
I cleared the interview , was offered a small package ( though for me it was like getting a Golden Treasure ).
Initial 1 year was very hard , patiently worked with that company for 2.6 years and after that I made a switch to an automotive company ( Presently working ). Got a good hike .
Then new questions started arising in my mind , how to get into an IT company , we manufacturing company ABAP programmers are not given that preference compared to IT people.
Was ready to upgrade my skill ,
Started with Webdynpro , later stopped as I was not able to configure it in my companies system.
Workflow , that too was not able to configure
    Adobe form , same reason
then I landed with ABAP OO.
My participation in this super thread
Classical way to ABAP OO style of coding
helped me to make the start , started developing Reports and Driver Pgms using OO Programming Paradigm and at last I got a chance to work with SAP Labs now on  payroll of a good company
So what I want to suggest is that  don't set your mind for IT companies  at this initial stage . Try to get into a manufacturing company , make contacts and surely you will land up with a good career very soon.
    All the best

At presently, I am associated as as Manager - Human Resources with India's 2nd largest Steel Manufacturing organization . Request you all kindly update with your desired suggestions.
    Thanks and Regards
    Abhinav Chandra

    Hi Abhinav,
First I am very glad to hear that you have sound domain knowldge in HR. So for a person like you SAP Implementation experience will be fantastic advantage. Off course if you wanna do certification on SAP HCM that you can always do but for a person like you who has already sound domain knowldge if you add SAP HCM Implementation experienece in your bucket you are done.
You know the respective HR Processes so thats a big advantage. However following steps would be good for you:
    Participate in Requirement Gathering workshop
Participate in Design Process and finalise the design
Try to know the SAP Configuration to some extent
Involve in SAP HCM Process testing
Good amount of involvement in SAP Authorisation issues as well.

  • CAreer in SAP BASIS comaprision with SAP GRC/Security

    Hi Everyone,
I am an SAP BASIS consultant with 2 years of experience working in a MNC company,
I want to change my career to SAP GRC/SAP Security, i have some basic knowledge on SAP Security,
COuld you please advice me, which one to choose,?
Does  SAP GRC/Security has demand , and can we get oportunities to work abroad compared to SAP BASIS ?
which one has more scope SAP BASIS or SAP Security/GRC ?
Because in BASIS, i am not getting enough scope to work on some good things like Installation, upgrades, Migration,
i am doing a very basic kind of work like tranports, job scheduling, monitoring, and other small activities ?
So request you people to advice me ?

    Hi Rakesh
I saw your post in GRC and was waiting of it to appear here
First up - 2 years is still junior. You may find batch jobs, transports, monitoring, etc all mundane but it is a foundation and learning ground work and foundations to being a good Basis Administration. And one things for sure, an awesome basic (I name my best-techy-friend) makes a huge difference on project timelines and deliverables for the rest of us.
Installation and Upgrades come with time. Whilst still performing junior tasks you could focus on reading up on approaches in case an opportunity in your job comes us and be prepared to prove to your management that you are ready for a bigger responsibility.
Switching to GRC/Security would be pointless unless you have a desire to learn GRC or Security. These are my background and they are undervalued until things go wrong (insurance policy in a way).
If you do switch you will reset your 2 years of domain experience back to 0 and you will start off with password resets and basic user administration
It takes time to work through the ranks. It was 3 years before I got to build my first role. I spent my first few years in security on email chasing approvals, password resets, user account creation, running reports for audit - sounds familiar to what you are doing now?
You have to master the basics before you are trusted and ready for the more complex activities. By knowing what you are doing now you will be more successful when the time comes to step up and do migrations, upgrades and installations. Support production by mastering you technical analysis skills is how you can break through being a fresher/junior
    Regards
    Colleen
Ps - if your motivation is more than "good things" happy to answer questions specific to security and GRC.
Also, boring doesn't mean it can't get interesting nor does it mean it's a worthless activity: SPAU transport imported before patching!!

I have functional & domain experience of healthcare but not in SAP. I do not have any healthcare certification. My core skill is in Microsoft (web base technology and data base). I am interested to build my career in SAP healthcare.
Can I start my career in SP healthcare without SAP knowledge ? Where I can find SAP healthcare job ?
I appreciate your advice in this regards.

SAP Patient Management is truly a global solution, of course the country-specifics (e.g. billing rules or other legal requirements) are covered in what we call country-versions which can be activated through configuration settings. My [blog|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/6329] gives you some more details on the countries as well a [sample list of our world wide customers|http://www.sap.com/industries/healthcare/customersuccess/customerreference.epx].

  • Starting a career in SAP

    Hi friends
I am student from networking background with CCNA certification, but now I would like to choose my career in SAP.
I haven't got any idea where to start with and which version of SAP suits to my technical background.
Could any one of u please suggest me the best possible first step.

    Hi !
Suitability-wise, the people from technical areas are generally recommended for SAP Basis, ABAP and Java based on previous background. Though there isn't anything directly suitable for you. SAP Basis (SAP System Administration) may be the right choice for you.
And about the starting point, there is no direct answer. Entering into an SAP career by choice is really difficult. There was a time in late 90s when you could expect to get 100% placement after doing a certification course. The time has changed now and the SAP market is very competitive. The demand for the SAP consultants is increasing and the industry needs good consultants but for the experienced and specialized who can help them to achieve their goals. The experts differ on how you should approach the problem of launching yourself into an SAP career. There is a lot of debate about the worthiness of SAP certification and believe me nobody can give you a straightforward answer. After weighing the pros and cons only you can make this choice. You can go through this educational resource which will shed some light on these doubts so that you can make an informed choice : http://www.best-career-guide-for-erp.com/sdn
