Career Prospect for SAP IS OIL

Hi Dear Community Members,
I need your valuable suggestions and insight before I move on to the Oil & Gas Industry.
I had a IT Degree and I am in the IT industry for 10 years. I am now planning to venture into the Oil & Gas Industry as this industry has an overall promising career & a job security. Therefore I had the initiative to take on the SAP IS OIL Module hoping to break into the O&G Industries, however I am unsure how SAP IS OIL has an overall impact to the Oil & Gas Sector, like :
What is the current market share for Oil Companies using SAP Solutions and SAP IS Module?
What are the career prospects for a SAP OIL Consultant? In terms of job stability and future career path
What are the markets in the US, UK and Europe for SAP IS OIL? As I am planning to migrate there.
I am looking forward to your kind advice and input. Thank you very much in advance.
Cheers,
Gary

Hi Gary,
Overall if you want to be in SAP IS-Oil, one or more of the following skill is required:
SAP PRA
SAP JVA
SAP PSA/PSE
SAP Controlling
SAP Finance
Second: Its always good if you have process experience in Oil & Gas - Upstream, Downstream or Midstream comanies. If you have not then its desirable that you have some process experience as you will feel the need of it when you are learing the above module. Without knowing the modules it is a challenge.
Third: Demand of IS- Oil is good and not bad however this is focussed in specific locations around the world like : US-Texas- Houston (Energy Hub), Canada, Middle east etc.
Fourth: Considering the fact that oil prices are down now, it will probably take 6 months to 1 year time for the boom to come. so probably this is not same time to venture immediately but learning this for near futute might prove beneficial.
Thanks & Regards
Subhasish

  • Career Prospects In SAP SCM

    Hi everybody,
I am working in freight forwarding industry and having experience of more then 10 Years in various department right from documentation to sales. I have worked with shipping lines, Inland Container depot and freight forwarders. To enhance my skills and giving it a technical edge i want to do a training in SAP SCM. As I don't have any exposure to SAP except doing some documentation work on SAP based Shipping Lines.
I need your valuable suggestions on how should I go about it. Can I go for classroom learning directly or i need to have some experience with SAP based organizations prior to that.
What are the career prospects in SAP SCM.
    Regards
    Akanksha

    Hi Akanksha,
i have done my Engineering from L.N.C.T . Indore. I know indore and its market, i don't think you will get any good training at Indore, so you have to move either Bangaluru, Pune/Mumbai or at Delhi NCR.
As at Bengaluru you will get tough competition with fellow SCM employee, so not suggested.
SCM market is good but its a domain specific , as i don't know much more about SCM , so just posting some useful links, from where you can gain knowledge. SCM market is consistent as far as i know, so take a foot ahead for a new begining, you will surely get what you wants .
Here are some links, which help you in boosting your knowledge.

  • Career Prospects in SAP xMII

    Hi All,
I want few suggestions from you guys. I am basically a Java Professional. I have 2 years experience in Java, and now, I have been working in SAP xMII for only 1 n half months. I find xMII very interesting. Can anybody please tell me about the career prospects in xMII? I am thinking of proceeding in this line. Do you people find this as a sensible decision? If yes, then how should I proceed? Any kind of suggestion or information regarding this is most welcome.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Lipsa.

I agree with Ryan - I see lots of demand for xMII skills, and the product is pushed considerably by SAP - I see a reference to xMII in every second SAP PowerPoint presentation (ok, maybe that's a slight exaggeration...)
I also think that some knowledge/proficiency in the technologies surrounding xMII will be very useful. Some examples of this in the SAP space could include XI/PI, Enterprise Portal, ERP, CAF, Visual Composer, etc. Some understanding of MES concepts and products would also be useful.
In my opinion, a broad knowledge of the above would help since xMII is an integration product and thus has touch points to a variety of other (non-SAP) systems...
But I guess a lot depends on how xMII is implemented...

  • Career prospects in SAP SD

Hi, after a long and tiring career of around 12 years in teaching as associate professor, I'm thinking of taking up more challenging careers in industry. I'm considering doing SAP SD and I'm worried about career prospects. Would anyone advise me if I'm correct in this kind of thinking...i.e., doing SAP at this age and time, would it be like risking or OK for me to move ahead? What things should I keep in mind in selection of course, institute etc for doing SAP. Pl. advise keeping my profile in picture.

    Hi Sandeep,
I would like to give you some brief of SAP job market in India. It will help you to do further analysis and take a decision.
For a job as an SAP SD consultant, the requirments are 2 yrs(minimum) of domain (sales) experience and some good (may be 3 yrs of hands on with SAP SD.
The domain exp part is not important if you are applying as a fresher (the fresher needs to be SAP certified , else no chance in India)
Am afraid, your teaching exp, even if its in marketing or sales, may not be considered (even financial product sales/ or sales in banking industry is not attractive here).
Coming to hand on exp in SAP, its very important to have it may be as a trainee, some project work, end user etc..
So now, you can analyse the situation and decide on what you have to do. Age may not be a constraint in this field, but you have to consider how much time, money and efort u can spend.

  • What is BW and how is the career prospect for BW?

Hi All I am Navin and I am in the BPO sector and decided to shift to SAP BW and I don't know anything about programming. I am interested in joining in BW and want to know about the career prospects in that. Experts please advice me!!!!!!

    Hi  Navin,
Unfortunately, as I found out, everything in SAP requires coding to solve problems which are unique to each customer requirement.
The applications are configurable by clicking. But these are always limited by the functionality of configurability. Coding is always necessary for any bw consultant. In fact, many customer requirements can only be met by coding. So if you are thinking of clicking here and there to work as bw consultant, then I am afraid I have bad news for you.
    Its all about coding.
You can still be a bw consultant not doing any coding and leave it to a developer to do that but then, you will soon become obsolete as the developer will learn what you know as you tell them your requirement. Learning to click here and there is simple.
To make yourself a valuable consultant , you must do the coding like BAPIs and Start Routines and Update Rules and Function modules and ..... in fact, BW developer is about an Abapper + BW configuration + functional consultant + BPX.
Come to think of it, BW consultants should be valued more.
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Career Advice for SAP BI veteran

    Hi SAP Community!
I'm Mike. I had been an SAP consultant for about 13 years. The last 3 years, have not been working as SAP consultant.
    My experience:
    SAP Basis 5 years .
    SAP BPS 2 years.
    SAP BW / BI / BI-IP  6 years.
I have never been a team leader. Always a consultant. a Doer.
I am now in my late 30's. I would like to progress/ transition into a more suitable position.
I have attained my PMP certification 2 years ago. But, as said, no management experience.
In the last 3 years when I was out of the scene, I was doing all kinds of low wage jobs. It started with the financial crisis.
Back then, not many projects were available. What made worse was SAP BI-IP had a replacement of sorts : BPC, BO and BI Accelerator.
I had given up SAP BI for the last 3 years. Now, I want to be back into SAP line. Outside of SAP line, I feel like a loser.
I am not sure if I should go for SAP BO training that would cost me a bomb as its again all the technical details to learn.
I feel that I am too old to keep repeating learning technical things that keep changing. i have the ability to keep learning. I have proven this in my career. But I like to have a career using my SAP experience and use my PMP.
I would like your kind advice how to make my next career move. What would you recommend me to do?
Thanks for reading. Hope to hear from you.
    Best regards
      Michael

    Hello,
I don´t have any special advice, since you´re much older and more experienced and I cannot tell how to put your skills into the best use. But.. if you would like to start with something new, "cutting edge", like BO a blog of mine could help. Check it here: /people/otto.gold/blog/2010/07/20/how-to-play-around-with-sap-and-crystal-reports-trial-versions-only Using the blog you should be able to recreate a training landscape (and it should not take you like weeks since you have "some" basis experience) and you can give it a try for free before you decide to go this way or not. If nothing else, I could spare you some money.
Wish you all the needed luck,
    regards Otto
