Carriage returns within an appointment

Is there a way to modify iCal so that when you want to create a new line within an appointment you can use Return rather than have to type Option-Return? I moved over from Palm Desktop (because of its instability) and never had to use the option key while typing within an appointment. It's very annoying!

The internal name of the field indicates its purpose - Summary. For longer, multi-line (with all the carriage returns you want) use the notes (description) field.

  • Numbers ought to keep check box that allows carriage return within a cell universally within a table

    Apple really fell asleep at the switch when releasing its latest version of Numbers 2013 (3.2), because it ignored the universal learning styles of human beings who have used the software in earlier releases and seemed to change features with little consideration for the community as a whole.
    For example, why would you delete the feature that allows a user to turn-on or turn-off the "carriage return within a cell".  It seems smart of them to add the abilityt to simply press the Option key and hit return at the same time to allow a carriage return within a cell, but why would you DELETE the feature that allows returns within a cell universally within a table?
    And then the Inspector got completely revised.
    Time saved in creating technologies gets eaten up in having to relearn technology every time a new release is created that doesn't build on the previous release very well.

    Adamo,
    You are complaining to fellow users.  It is best to post your feedback to Apple using the menu item

  • Can the carriage return within a variant be read as the termination condition for VISA READ?

    Hi guys, I am trying to read a variant data using VISA READ. The VISA READ is set to terminate reading when it sees a carriage return.
    Is there a chance that for the CR "encapsulated" within the variant be read by the VISA READ, and cause it to terminate?
    Cheers!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Since with the Flatten to String you are basically sending a binary representation of the data, you are going to have problems if you have the termination character enabled since byte 13 would be part of perfectly valid data and not just represent the end of a transmission.
    What you might want to do is disable the termination character.  Of course now you don't know how many bytes to read.  So prepend your message to write with the number of bytes that are a part of the message (string length).  You may want to use two bytes, (one byte would only give you messages up to 255 characters in length.)
    Now on your reading end, read 2 bytes, convert them to a number and feed that number in the next VISA read which will then read that many bytes.
    For examples, look at the TCP/IP read write examples in the example finder and you'll see how they send a message with 4 bytes to tell how much data makes up the rest of the message.

  • Removing Carriage Returns within a Textarea

    Hi,
    Just wondering if someone could please let me know how to remove carriage returns from a Textarea after submitting the page?
    Within my PL/SQL process, I have used both REPLACE and TRANSLATE on both CHR(10) and CHR(13) but unfortunately it stills comes out the other end as follows:
    Description :this
    is
    a
    testWould like it all on one line minus the carriage returns.
    Thanks.
    Tony.

    The code I showed works for me. Computations and processes work similarly except that in a process you have to save the value in session state whereas in a computation that's done for you. Show your code or put an example on apex.oracle.com if you can't get it to work and I'll check it.

  • Outputting XML carriage return in HTML via XSLT

    Hi,
    I have a scenario where I execute a View Object query in ADF to retrieve results from a particular table in the Database. I then iterate through the results in my Java managed bean and manually construct an XML file with all the appropriate tags. I then pass the XML file through a Transformer class in the Java bean based on an XSLT I have created to produce an HTML page. However I have an issue when it comes to handling carriage returns. One of the database table columns can contain carriage returns within its value but in the final HTML page the carriage returns don't have any effect and the text just displays on one line.
    In the database, the values are stored with the carriage return and in SQL Developer, Toad etc this can be seen e.g. Text1 Text2 Text3 Text4 will display on separate lines. In the XML, the carriage return seems to still be there as when I open the file my element which contains the carriage returns shows each part on a new line e.g. <textElement>Text1
                                                           Text2
                                                           Text3
                                                           Text4</textElement>     (The Text2, Text3 and Text4 all start on a new line at the beginning and there's no prior white space as shown in this post)
    The XML file in JDeveloper also shows carriage return arrow symbols where there is one.
    The HTML page just shows them as Text1 Text2 Text3 Text4 all on one line. Inspecting the source of the HTML shows that the carriage return is in fact there as it also displays as per the XML with the values on separate lines.
    Outputting the value from the View Object in Java to the log shows the value coming out like this - Text1 Text2Text3Text4, which is strange but I know the carriage returns are there so I'm not too fussed about this.
    I have tried escaping the characters in the Java by doing str.replaceAll("[\\r\\n]", ""); (but replacing the "" with &#xD; &#xA; or &x0A;) so in the XML it replaces carriage returns and line feeds with these escaped characters. However, when the XSLT parses the XML it doesn't pick these up and instead actually outputs these actual characters as they are e.g. Text1&x0A;Text2&x0A;Text3&x0A;Text4
    So I can confirm that the carriage return is carrying all the way through to the XSL but I can't help but think that maybe I need to do something in the XSL to process this somehow, e.g. doing the equivalent of the 'replace' in Java but I don't know what I need to search for in the XML and also what to actually replace it with..Do I just replace it with a </BR> in HTML?
    We also parse the XML using PDF and Excel XSL Transformer class and see the same results.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    That's a very commonly asked question.
    HTML doesn't preserve linefeeds, except for the <pre> tag.
    You'll have to replace those characters with <BR/> tags in the XSLT.
    Search the Internet for terms like "XSLT HTML LF", you'll find some XSLT sample templates to handle the replacement.

  • Carriage returns no longer available in Numbers

    I have just updated to the latest version of Numbers on my iPad following the update to iOS 5.  It appears that the new version has annoyingly lost the ability to insert a carriage return within a cell. The onscreen keyboard now diplays a "Next" key where the "Return" used to be.  I have tried every key combination on the onscreen and Mac bluetooth keyboard but cannot find how to insert a carriage return.  This is driving me nuts - can anyone help with this??
    Thanks

    In the previous version of Numbers i.e. before the iOS 5 update I could execute a carriage return by calling the on screen keyboard up.  However, the on screeen keyboard now has a "Next" key in place of a "Return" key which moves the cursor down to the cell below.  I have escalated this to Apple as I am sure this can't be intentional behaviour.

  • Carriage Return in DB Calculation

    Please excuse this novice question but I can't seem to find the answer on the boards or in help. I would like to do a simple calculation in a Database field that consists of combining Name, Address, CSZ, etc. However, I cannot seem to find where or how I insert/ force a carriage return within a calucation field. If there is a text function that works or something else: My example would be (RETURN being the question):
    'First Name'&" "&'Last Name' RETURN
    'Address' RETURN
    'City'&", "&'State'&" "&'Zip'
    Hope this makes sense. Thanks for your time and help.

    If you hit a return when typing a formula, nothing happens. But if you type the formula in TextEdit and paste it into the formula box, the returns will be there. The formula should look like this.
    'First Name'&" "&'Last Name'&"
    "&'Address'&"
    "&'City'&", "&'State'&" "&'Zip'

  • Inserting carriage returns in a concatenated string

    Hi.....
    Does anyone know how to insert carriage returns within a concatenated string in a sql statement?
    i.e. Select 'John'||'Smith' from dual
    I'm trying to return:
    John
    Smith
    as opposed to John Smith
    Thanks,
    ~Christine

    As suggested chr(10) is what you need, but it's not carriage return, but line feed, carriage return is chr(13). See the difference :
    TEST@db102 SQL> select 'John'||chr(10)||'Smith' from dual;
    'JOHN'||CH
    John
    Smith
    TEST@db102 SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1* select 'John'||chr(13)||'Smith' from dual
    TEST@db102 SQL> /
    'JOHN'||CH
    Smith

  • How can labview update the string control (text-edit box) after we have pressed the carriage return key on the keyboard during text-editing within that box?

    Dear readers,
    I have been trying to work out how to get labview to detect the event when a 'string' control has been modified, where the user has finished editing the string either by 1) pressing the enter key on the keyboard, or by 2) taking the focus away from the string control again. For example.. if I use the mouse to click on the string control and then I type 1234 into the box, I would like to have a routine that does something once the user hits the Enter key of the keyboard, or when the user takes the focus away from the string control again by clicking on something else. I would like the routine to respond even when the user didn't change anything in the text box (such as when we mouse-click on the edit box to go into edit mode, and then mouse-click on something else to remove the focus with no changes to the contents in edit-box).
    The purpose of my routine is to have a edit-box for a user to change for example the centre-frequency of a vector network analyser, so that the centre-frequency of the network analyser can change once the user finishes entering a new value in the text-edit box by hitting Enter key after the number is keyed in. Even if the user has clicked on the edit box, but changes their mind by mouse-clicking on something else to remove focus from the edit box, I would still like labview to detect the event when the control loses focus, so that the centre frequency can be updated anyway (to the same value that was already in the edit box).
    So far, I've tried set the string control option to 'limit to single line', so that I can try to scan for a carriage return .. '\n' ... pattern in the string. Unfortunately this doesn't work because labview doesn't seem to attach the '\n' to the end of that single line.
    Could someone please suggest ways to set a flag when a user hits Enter during text-edit mode of a string control, or when focus has been removed from the string control?
    While I've only described my problem for controlling a single control parameter on the gpib device, I'd like to make this feature work so that I can do the same kind of thing with other control parameters as well.
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Kenny

    Hi Kenny,
    instead of using the event structure, you can directly achieve to what you want by the KeyFocus property of the string control.
    - Enable Limit to single line option
    - Create the property KeyFocus in read mode and connect an indicator
    Each time you click on the string to modify it KeyFocus is True; when you click away or hit Enter KeyFocus is False.
    You can toggle your settings when KeyFocus changes from True to False.

  • Using a Macro to add a Carriage Return after each data entry within all cells of an imported range of cells

    I have a macro that copies data from a Target workbook then pastes the data into a destination workbook.  I then wish to use lookups in the destination workbook to view specific data from the pasted range of data on a separate sheet.
    The problem is, the cells that contain numbers from the pasted data have the green dogeared error flags associated with the cell. The only way I can make a lookup function work, is to go to each cell and manually enter a carriage return after each entry.
    The code for the macro is given below.  What can be done so that the pasted data contains no errors associated with the number cells?  Or can a second macro be written to clean the data.  If so can you help me out?  Thanks in advance.

    DAPulliam64

    Hi DAPAugust64,
    The green "dogeared error flags" of the cells means that you paste numbers in these cells, but they're formated as Text.
    So you need to change the cells back to the correct format so that the lookup function works fine. You can simply call this method after pasting:
    ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).NumberFormat = "General"
    ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1) = ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).Text
    Or use PasteSpecial method to paste the numbers as well as it's format:

  • Carriage Returns and Tabs in XML element

    I have a number of carriage returns and tabs within an xml element. When I take that element I would like it to transform to html in which I am then displaying within a JEditorPane. However, when I do this it is one long string. I have tried the xml:space="preserve" within that element and this still is not working.
    Here is part of the xml with the carriage return line feeds. The element that I am talking about is called pseudocode. You can see it is displayed correctly below.
    Design Document XML : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?><design-doc><title-page><title>Testing Document</title><class-prepared-for>Lloyd</class-prepared-for><authors>Ben Garbers</authors><date-created>September 23, 2004</date-created></title-page><introduction text="This is the introduction.     if (player =null)
         NullPlayerException;
              if (NOT (isPlayerNameExist(player)))
                   throw PlayerNameNotExistException;
              /* Ensure player name exist in the team already*/
              i ? 1;
              while (i <= length(mPlayers)) {
                   if (mPlayers.mPlayerName != playerName)
                        throw PlayerNameNotExistInTeamException;
    this.mPlayers ? this.mPlayers - player;</pseudocode>
    However, when I do the transformation I get the following with the pseudocode:
    /* Ensure that player name exist in the system*/if (player =null)     NullPlayerException;          if (NOT (isPlayerNameExist(player)))               throw PlayerNameNotExistException;          /* Ensure player name exist in the team already*/          i ? 1;          while (i <= length(mPlayers)) {               if (mPlayers[i].mPlayerName != playerName)                    throw PlayerNameNotExistInTeamException;}this.mPlayers ? this.mPlayers - player;
    It looks like it adds some spaces but no carriage returns or line feeds.
    My transformation code is the following:
         public ParseFile(String xmlString) {
              try {
              //Here we will load the correct style sheet for the message
              //that will be formatted.

              ByteArrayOutputStream bos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
              StreamResult result = new StreamResult(bos);
              SAXSource source = new SAXSource(in);
              transformer.transform(source, result);
              String s = bos.toString();
              StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
              //This will make sure the Version Line is not shown.
              BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new StringReader(s));
              String line = "";

              System.out.println("--------------------------------");
              System.out.println(formattedXmlString);
              System.out.println("--------------------------------");
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
    I have been searching and trying to figure this out forever. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bottom line is that I want carriage returns and tabs to work when transferring from the xml to xsl.

    I get the following line when adding the <pre> tags.
    /* Ensure that player name exist in the system*/if (player =null)     NullPlayerException;          if (NOT (isPlayerNameExist(player)))               throw PlayerNameNotExistException;          /* Ensure player name exist in the team already*/          i ? 1;          while (i <= length(mPlayers)) {               if (mPlayers[i].mPlayerName != playerName)                    throw PlayerNameNotExistInTeamException;}this.mPlayers ? this.mPlayers - player;
    On the screen this is shown on 1 line. It looks like the tabs are working correctly. However, the carriage return, line feeds do not seem to be working. The xml that is pushed into the transformation has the carriage returns and line feeds and is formatted correctly. There has to be something happening when the xsl takes the xml String. When I add <BR></BR> within the xml that doesn't seem to work either.
    I am really sumpted. If you could help DrClap I would really be appreciated.

  • Remove carriage returns from a field in an oracle table

    I have a field that is defined as a LONG in my oracle table; the data contained in this field has carriage returns/line feeds (it's free form text); as i'm selecting data from this field, i need the carriage returns removed so that the data from this field all appears on one line.
    I tried using the TRANSLATE function to convert the carriage returns to something else, but that doesn't work.
    Example:
    Select comment from Notes:

    called applicant to confirm app
