Cartridge reported missing or damaged

Not for the first time, the computer reports a genuine black ink cartridge as "missing or damaged".  Last time (six months ago) it was a new large sized genuine cartridge from Tesco; this time a standard sized (364) cartridge, 60% full.
Last time I remedied the problem by scrapping the cartridge and washing the print heads with de-ionised water... but this is expensive.  Will it work again? and will the problem recur?

Hello @dustyone,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the black cartridge error that you're receiving on your HP Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One Printer. Now I understand that you have come across this issue in the past and was able to resolve this issue by discarding the ink cartridge and washing the Printhead. At this time I am going to run you through some standard troubleshooting steps. But, because this is a reoccurring issue I do think your Printhead may be defective. The Printhead is a replaceable part in your machine. It is the mechanism that 'reads' the cartridges and controls ink for going on the pages. Therefore, should the Printhead be defective, than your print system is defective. To verify if this issue can be resolved once again, can I please have you follow the steps below.
To start, can I please have you click here to access the appropriate cartridge troubleshooting steps. Please run through Step one, Step two, Step three, Step four, and Step five.
Should these steps fail to resolve your issue, you may want to refer to the thread by @Bob_Headrick  for Re: black ink not working as there are additional Printhead cleaning steps that you  may find useful. These steps are only to be followed if your printhead is out of warranty.
Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your cartridge issue. Good luck!

  • 7520 Photosmart Printer Cartridge Problem Missing or Damaged

I am looking for help because we keep getting a cartridge problem stating one or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged. When we bought the printer, we had problems getting the cartridges to work. This is our first time changing any color cartridges and we get this same issue. After two days of trying everything, as soon as I logged on to this site, the cartridges decided to work. But I am hoping someone can give suggestions to make this process easier in the future. We followed all directions and put in read HP cartridges that were brand new. We could get all but blue and yellow to work. Then we could get yellow and not blue; then blue and not yellow. The system keeps giving the message Cartridge Problem.

Ours is now working, but I have no way of knowing what we did differently to get the cartridge to work. They are all HP cartridges. We just kept putting them in over and over. I had given up and logged on to this chat room and suddenly it recorgnized the last cartridge. I was hoping someone could give us a hint of what the problem would be so we could avoid it next time. My only suggestion to you is to keep trying. Sometimes it helped with one cartridge to tilt it slightly. It is very frustrating because you are correct that you cannot do ANYTHING until you fix the problem. If you could at least print in black and white, it would not be so irritating. We have owned a number of HP printers, and this has never been an issue with the prior ones.

  • Ink cartridge missing or damaged?

I have an HP PhotoSmart c309n-s with a screen that's showing "Ink Cartridge Problem" and goes on to say that my yellow ink cartridge is missing or damaged. I tried reinstalling the yellow cartridge, removing and reinstalling all the cartridges, and replacing the yellow cartridge outright. At various points I also got complaints that the blue cartridge was bad too, and for a time I got a message that all five cartridges were "missing or damaged." I've tried unplugging the printer as well. If it helps, we had a power failure yesterday for about 15 hours ... but I'm unsure whether that matters.
For now, it's still complaining that the yellow cartridge is missing or damaged. The print head moves every 15 seconds or so, but nothing prints. Help!

  • L7590 Error message won't go away "ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged" HELP!

I opened the door to get my cartridge numbers.  The numbers are not visible so I closed the door.  Now I am getting a meaasge that my cyan and black cartridges are missing or damaged.  Both were almost brand new.  I have now removed and reinstalled them and removed power to the printer overnight.  It won't clear up.  I need help, please!   Thanks!

I'd advise calling HP phone support. You'll need to tell them the warranty ends date written on the cartridge...(no need to enter it on the website, as that's just for printer warranty)

  • Ink cartridge missing or damaged message

I've been having the black ink not printing problem and after trying the clean print heads command thru the printer and the computer controls with no success, I finally resorted to removing the cradle and flushing the screens with alcohol and warm water until it ran clear. I cleaned all the terminals and reinstalled the cartridges. Now I get an error message that "one or more cartridges are missing or damaged". I've tried removing and reinstalling. I saw a warning about not leaving them out more than 30 minutes. Could've been that long while I was cleaning print heads. What now?

    Hello @Posmmom,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 6510, you are unable to print in black ink.
I see you have completed the troubleshooting steps listed here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, with no success.
As for the printhead, you do not want to dry it out, that's why they recommend not to leave the cartridges out for long periods of time. Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages.
I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks,

  • Missing or damaged cartridges message

I just replaced my black ink cartridge with a new hp cartridge in my 7520 all-in-one photosmart printer, but keep getting a message that "one or more cartridges are missing or damaged".  Seems to be the black one that is causing the problem.  Now what?

That solve it? If not, is the cartridge still in warranty? [ there should be a warranty ends date written on the cartridge body]

    Hi @prince041181
I'd like to help you with your Officejet 6600. Please complete the troubleshooting steps presented in the following document; A 'Cartridge Problem,' 'Ink Cartridge Failure,' or 'Incompatible Ink Cartridges' Error Message Displ....
If the issue persists, I suggest calling us. Don't hesitate to call, although the printer may be out of warranty, the cartridges could be in warranty; therefore, there wouldn't likely be a fee for the phone support. We will, at our option, either replace products under warranty that prove to be defective or refund the purchase price.
We could even determine after troubleshooting that it is a problem with the printer, in which case they may offer you a discount on a newer model.
The number to call is 1-800-474-6836 for Canada and US, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
To find the “Warranty Ends” date, look in the following table for the date's location on each product. The date follows the YYYY/MM/DD or YYYY/MM format, where YYYY indicates the year, MM indicates the month, and DD indicates the day.
    I hope this helps.

I have a yellow ink cartridge that is still 75% full but now my printer is giving me the error message, "Ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged".  I have tried all of the troubleshooting tips recomended by HP and all have failed other than replacing the cartridge, and that worked.  I am trying claim a warranty on this cartridge as it is still well within the warranty date.  HOWEVER, everytime I input the information, the page switches to the sales page!!! I am ready to throw this $350 POS HP 8500a out the door and burn it then post the video on youtube of how crappy the service and product is!  PLEASE GIVE THE DIRECT LINK TO OBTAIN THE WARRANTY ON THIS INK CARTIDGE!!!! Or is this your plan to make people so frustrated that they give up and you don't have to reemburse the customer?  Way to go customer service!!!

  • Officejet pro 8600 plus. Error message: cartridge missing or damaged

Just installed a new printer head to the tune of $120.00. It came with set-up cartridges that you are required to use. Installed new  printer head and cartridges. Now I get the error message of cartridges missing or damaged. I have taken out the cartridges and printer head about 5 times and still get the message. Do I dare try using my old cartridges (which were actually brand new - more $ wasted)?? how can I run a business without a printer, scanner, and fax?!?

I'm having the same issue.  We also had this issue with the original 8600 we purchased (that one only used the demo cartridges before giving the lovely "cartridge missing" error).  The first one was still under warranty, so we had to send it back to HP and get a replacement.  In the meantime, the office was without a printer.  Now, the second 8600 has managed to last through about 8 cartridges (approximately six months) before the same issue arose.   It's even with the same cartridge:  magenta.
I've changed cartridges, removed the print head and cleaned it, cleaned the contacts on cartridge, the print head and even where the print head connects to the printer, and even removed the little white plastic guide wedges and switched them around to try and troubleshoot the situation.   I've rebooted it repeatedly and briefly contemplated banging it vigorously on the sides to beat it into submission.
Alas, it is still showing the error.
I wish I could say I'm a novice when it comes to troubleshooting, but I regularly work on printers and other components.  It is truly frustrating to have a product which does not perform well and which does not easily allow the user to rectify the situation without resorting to a sledgehammer or wine.

  • Error message 'One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged'.

Hi, can someone help suggest what i do next? I'm getting the above error message on the main black ink cartridge. I've tried 3 different cartridges so I'm pretty sure it's not the actual catridge that's a problem as they can't all be faulty. There's no problem with the other 4 cartridges.

    Hello MTBB,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to see if there is anything more to suggest regarding the cartridge error on the printer. What is the model of the printer you are having the issue with?
Since you have done - in my opinion - the best troubleshooting step by replacing the cartridges already, it may be a printhead issue. Take a look through this HP document: 'Incompatible Print Cartridge', 'Print Cartridge Problem', or 'Cartridge Missing or Damaged' Message..., it may have a step or two more worth trying.
    Thanks, for posting.

  • Following cartridges appear to be missing or damaged

    Hi,
I have an HP Officejet 6500A Plus. I've replaced the ink in the printer several times since I purchased it, however I've had A LOT of problems with these cartridges. I keep getting the error prompt "the following cartridges appear to be missing or damaged." I've owned HP printers since the early days with my first Mac, but never have I had this problem. There is no real secret to installing these cartridges, but I waste more time getting error message off than I do printing. That's not productive.
So if I'm missing something, please tell me what because this sure is a pain.

  • New Cartridges seen as missing or damaged

I recnetly bought an HP 3-pack of 564 black cartridges.  Each cartridge usually lasts me 3 months or so.  The first two lasted about 2 weeks each, then I got the "Cartridge appears to be missing or damaged" message.  They certainly weren't missing, and they feel as heavy as their full companions.  I just inserted #3 and it's woking ok...so far.  Is the problem likely to be with the printer or these cartridges?  Someone please give me a hint.

Thanks for your model number NiloDerf!
My best suggestion is to follow the guide I have found for you below. The steps should help rid the error message. If the message still appears, I would then suggest calling HP to see what your options are with them.
