Cartridges appear to be missing or damaged

I have a new 6830 printer. After printing two photos I am now getting a "one or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged" message. I have replaced them, cleaned them, reset the printer and nothing works. This is infuriating as I just bought the printer to replace another HP printer that died.

Hi ayaggy,
Here is a support document from hp.com that gives you steps to try for this exact printer and error message.
Let me know if this solves your problem!
Thanks,

I have a yellow ink cartridge that is still 75% full but now my printer is giving me the error message, "Ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged".  I have tried all of the troubleshooting tips recomended by HP and all have failed other than replacing the cartridge, and that worked.  I am trying claim a warranty on this cartridge as it is still well within the warranty date.  HOWEVER, everytime I input the information, the page switches to the sales page!!! I am ready to throw this $350 POS HP 8500a out the door and burn it then post the video on youtube of how crappy the service and product is!  PLEASE GIVE THE DIRECT LINK TO OBTAIN THE WARRANTY ON THIS INK CARTIDGE!!!! Or is this your plan to make people so frustrated that they give up and you don't have to reemburse the customer?  Way to go customer service!!!
        Regards, Joanns

I'd advise calling HP phone support. You'll need to tell them the warranty ends date written on the cartridge...(no need to enter it on the website, as that's just for printer warranty)

Hi Castletonway, Welcome to the HP Support Forums! • Following cartridges appear to be missing or damaged

    Hi,
I have an HP Officejet 6500A Plus. I've replaced the ink in the printer several times since I purchased it, however I've had A LOT of problems with these cartridges. I keep getting the error prompt "the following cartridges appear to be missing or damaged." I've owned HP printers since the early days with my first Mac, but never have I had this problem. There is no real secret to installing these cartridges, but I waste more time getting error message off than I do printing. That's not productive.
So if I'm missing something, please tell me what because this sure is a pain.

  • Error message 'One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged'.

Hi, can someone help suggest what i do next? I'm getting the above error message on the main black ink cartridge. I've tried 3 different cartridges so I'm pretty sure it's not the actual catridge that's a problem as they can't all be faulty. There's no problem with the other 4 cartridges.

    Hello MTBB,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to see if there is anything more to suggest regarding the cartridge error on the printer. What is the model of the printer you are having the issue with?
Since you have done - in my opinion - the best troubleshooting step by replacing the cartridges already, it may be a printhead issue. Take a look through this HP document: 'Incompatible Print Cartridge', 'Print Cartridge Problem', or 'Cartridge Missing or Damaged' Message..., it may have a step or two more worth trying.
    Thanks, for posting.

I opened the door to get my cartridge numbers.  The numbers are not visible so I closed the door.  Now I am getting a meaasge that my cyan and black cartridges are missing or damaged.  Both were almost brand new.  I have now removed and reinstalled them and removed power to the printer overnight.  It won't clear up.  I need help, please!   Thanks!

  • Printer Cartridge appears to be missing or damaged

Just bought all new color cartridges and installed them, but I'm getting the error message in the subject line for one of the cartridges. So, I tried the troubleshooting (following all the instructions to the letter) and I'm still getting the error message. So, I find out that the only solution left is to get the printer serviced. Well, surprise: my warranty expired, 4.5 months ago. Am I pissed off? You bet.  I'm stuck with three new colour cartridges that I have opened so I can't return them and an HP Officejet 6500 that's a year and 4.5 months old that's pooched. Thanks HP. Remind me to never buy your printers again.
    Addendum:
After leaving the printer opened, for about 15 minutes, the cartridge holder with the cartridges firmly in place began moving back into its Hiding Place, then came out again and centered itself, promptly chirped and recognised all the cartridges as OK. HP may want to include this step in it's documentation -- er, not the part where I thank HP and ask them to remind me not to buy their printers anymore. Apparently they just take a bit more thime to adjust themsleves. All for now. Cheers.

Update: Bless you, Disgruntled. After mulling it over for 30 minutes or so with its maw open to the wind, the thing stirred to life just like you described.
And I was ready to go buy a Craig's List used printer! Came to the brink of paying for phone support, even!
Whew! I'm sure not buying any more cartridges for this thing, though. I'll take its continued health day by day. Thanks so much for posting your story.

  • Error message:- One or more cartridges appear to be damaged.

This error message comes up when I turn on the my HP PHOTOSMART 6520 printer:-
One or more of the cartridges appears to be missing or damaged. Install or replace the affected cartridges.
When I lift the door up, the printer cartridges do not move from the right hand side and so I can't get to them to change them/remove. What would you suggest? Thanks for any help.

    Hello Sassari,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with the carriage not moving so you can change the ink cartridges as well as a Ink cartridge error.
I do have a few troubleshooting steps we can try in the attempt to resolve this issue.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
I also suggest that we try to remove the power cable from the rear of the printer and while it is disconnected, please attempt to move the carriage over by hand to the middle of the printer.  Remove the ink cartridges but do not replace.  Remove them and then close the printer back up and reconnect the power cable.  The error message should change to "No ink cartridges installed". At this point, open the access panel and install new ink.
If you are still getting the original error message, please click on the following link for the 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Indicated Ink Cartridge Must Be Replaced' Message Displays on the C....
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
    Thank you for your time.

  • 7520 Photosmart Printer Cartridge Problem Missing or Damaged

I am looking for help because we keep getting a cartridge problem stating one or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged. When we bought the printer, we had problems getting the cartridges to work. This is our first time changing any color cartridges and we get this same issue. After two days of trying everything, as soon as I logged on to this site, the cartridges decided to work. But I am hoping someone can give suggestions to make this process easier in the future. We followed all directions and put in read HP cartridges that were brand new. We could get all but blue and yellow to work. Then we could get yellow and not blue; then blue and not yellow. The system keeps giving the message Cartridge Problem.

Ours is now working, but I have no way of knowing what we did differently to get the cartridge to work. They are all HP cartridges. We just kept putting them in over and over. I had given up and logged on to this chat room and suddenly it recorgnized the last cartridge. I was hoping someone could give us a hint of what the problem would be so we could avoid it next time. My only suggestion to you is to keep trying. Sometimes it helped with one cartridge to tilt it slightly. It is very frustrating because you are correct that you cannot do ANYTHING until you fix the problem. If you could at least print in black and white, it would not be so irritating. We have owned a number of HP printers, and this has never been an issue with the prior ones.

  • New Cartridges seen as missing or damaged

I recnetly bought an HP 3-pack of 564 black cartridges.  Each cartridge usually lasts me 3 months or so.  The first two lasted about 2 weeks each, then I got the "Cartridge appears to be missing or damaged" message.  They certainly weren't missing, and they feel as heavy as their full companions.  I just inserted #3 and it's woking ok...so far.  Is the problem likely to be with the printer or these cartridges?  Someone please give me a hint.

Thanks for your model number NiloDerf!
My best suggestion is to follow the guide I have found for you below. The steps should help rid the error message. If the message still appears, I would then suggest calling HP to see what your options are with them.

  • Cartridge missing or damaged - Officjet 6500 Wireless

I have had my 6500 Wireless for only a few months, but have had the same problem more than once. After replacing an ink cartridge with a new one, following the instructions to the letter, I get a scrolling message that says: The following Ink Cartridges appear to be missing or damaged: black [K] (or other colors). At times I have gotten it to work by taking them out and putting them in many times. Last time, with the black cartridge, I was in the middle of a call with HP support whe I leaned over the printer to read the serial number off the back, and somehow when I put my weight on the printer, it suddenly worked. This time, no matter what I do, I cannot get the printer to recognize the brand-new black cartridge, or a second new one that I tried. Of course I have gone meticulously through the HP troubleshooting procedure. Nothing.
Has anyone else dealt with this? Is it possible that the printer is bad?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I have had this printer for about 6 months.
Both times I have replaced with Genuine HP ink cartridges this has happend.
Both times the fix has been this:  on the top of the cartridge, where you pull off the plastic, is an air channel that runs across the top of the cartridge.  The first time the plastic did not pull off cleanly and there were bits plugging the channel.
The second time, the plastic pulled off the straight channel, but where it runs into a bunch of S-shaped curves it looked blocked.
I poked a tiny hole with a pin in the first S-curve through the plastic and the cartridge worked.
The channel must be open or the ink cannot drain into the printer- it creates a vacuum.
This is a manufacturing defect and HP should look into fixing it.
For others finding this forum, get a small, sharp pin and open that channel and try it again.. just be careful not to collapse the plastic in the air channel and plug it up worse..

  • Missing or damaged cartridge message

On Photosmart C309g, missing or damaged cartridge message continues to show after all cartridges have been replaced and the contacts have been cleaned. (several times)   This has happened before and for whatever reason rectified itself.  Any Thoughts???   Thank You

    Hi @Stringbass
The issue could be the cartridge(s) or printhead. I found a document that addresses this particular error. I also located another that is for a different issue, the the steps guide you through a manual printhead cleaning which might help. • Ink cartridge missing or damaged?

I have an HP PhotoSmart c309n-s with a screen that's showing "Ink Cartridge Problem" and goes on to say that my yellow ink cartridge is missing or damaged. I tried reinstalling the yellow cartridge, removing and reinstalling all the cartridges, and replacing the yellow cartridge outright. At various points I also got complaints that the blue cartridge was bad too, and for a time I got a message that all five cartridges were "missing or damaged." I've tried unplugging the printer as well. If it helps, we had a power failure yesterday for about 15 hours ... but I'm unsure whether that matters.
For now, it's still complaining that the yellow cartridge is missing or damaged. The print head moves every 15 seconds or so, but nothing prints. Help!

  • "One or more cartridges appear to be damaged"

I purchased my office jet 8620 last Oct 29 from the Office Depot in Niles, IL (#3242). It worked very well until the original ink cartridges (set up) needed to be replaced. I removed the old ones, installed the new ones using HP cartridges and after a couple minutes the screen on the machine displayed this message:
""One or more cartridges appear to be damaged. Remove them and replace with new cartridges."
I assumed that the brand new cartridges were defective so I returned them and bought new ones but I am getting the same message, and the printer won't print anything.
I went through this checklist (http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Officejet-Pro-8600-e-All-in-One-Printer-series---N9/4322914/m... and spoke with HP customer service by phone. The tech never offered to replace the pinhead assembly - instead, she suggested that I contact the Office Depot store in Niles and return the entire thing.
Now the store manager tells me he won't replace the unit because it is past the 6 month purchase date, but did offer to "take a look" at the cartridge carriage and heads to make sure they're okay.
Can an HP rep inform me what my next step should be? Recontact Tech support?
    Thanks,
    Mike M.

What cartidges are you replacing? 932/933 or 950/951. I have an 8600, approximately 2 years old where the printer ran fine on 932/933 but now insists on 950/951.
