CAS Latency reading incorrect and system hanging

well i searched (maybe not enough) and tried a few things, but i'm stuck.
at BIOS post screen shows memory CL3, regardless that i have set CL to 2 and ddr voltage to 2.6
memory:
Kingston Hyper X
KHX3200A/1G CL2
2-3-2-6-1
2.6V
2x1GB Stick of PC3200 DDR400
MoBo:
k8t neo-fis2r (6702)
hdd:
200GB Maxtor SATA (on the VIA slot)
OS:
windows xp pro sp2
also this issue which may or may not be related... after my windows login screen my desktop background comes up but nothing else, and hangs like that for a few minutes, then all of a sudden the rest loads up.  maybe 1 out of every 30 bootups the computer boots right through without hangs.

Ahh I think I have the answer. A64's can handle up to 4 banks of RAM at the rated specs without dropping back to a slower speed. In Kingstons own specs they show each of these DIMMS at 4 banks each so by using two you have 8 banks of RAM. So your forcing the CPU's memory controller to drop back to get the rated timings. I would get better RAM if it was me. Most 1GB sticks are 2 Banks each so you would stay at the rated speed easy with 2GB of RAM. I know the RAM I have works on that board at the rated speed even though it requires a tad more voltage. I have tested them and had no issues.
http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KHX3200A_1g.pdf
Keep in mind as well that the memory controller is not on the MB but rather in the CPU with any A64 CPU. The only thing the MB does is to keep Bios settings about the RAM which it sends to the Memory Controller at startup. However if the specs are wrong the controller will either balk and not post or it will force the RAM to drop back in speed to work.
I know this also may help. As you have an A64 stay away from any type of Value RAM as it always seems to hold unpleasant suprises. Stay with a good quality RAM as there is very little difference in prices but can have many issues if you try to save a buck or two.

  • LR3 crashes on opening and system hangs

    Hi- I just got LR3.
I kept my Lightroom catalogues on an external drive.
First time I opened LR3 I linked to catalogue and when it was about 75% through upgrading, system froze, got grey overlay on screen and message to restart computer - but all I could do was to cut the power.
I reapired permissions, moved catalogues to mac in 'pictures' and tried again.
I managed to open a catalogue, looked at a picture & then it crashed.
    Optimized LR2 catalogues etc
    reinstalled etc.
Now all I get is the LR3 logo and system crashes immediately.
Help - rather annoyed that I've just spent £78 for this.
The LR2 upgrade when I had it worked flawlessly.
Others seem to be having the crash further on - I can't even look at catalogues now.
Update: just repaired permissions and am getting:
ACL: found but not expected for many strings - dont know hat t means

I have also had this thread on Canon Forum and Lightroom Forum where I followed the path you suggested.
After various solutions including setting up a clean user account, it was suggested (on Lighroom forum) that I try and open LR3 in 32 bit - which I did and it worked.
I then looked at LR2 which had been working as I noticed a comment that it too was 64 bit - but I had been running it in 32 bit.
I changed LR2 to 64 bit and it also crashed in exactly the same way - so It appears that for LR2 , on installing, the default was 32 bit and for LR3 the default was 64 bit.
Looking on the system requirements for LR3 it says that I ned at least 1G ram - but I have 3G! However, other comments are that LR3 needs 4G to work properly.
Many thanks for all your help - and I hope this thread helps others.
The error message below was what I kept getting every time I tried to load LR3 - the screen froze and I could do nothing but cut the power.

  • Nvidia Driver and system "hang" issue

    Hi all,
This is my first post on these forums but im not new to Mac or windows. Here's my issue. I just installed a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate RTM on my Macbook. Its the first unibody Macbook 2.4ghz w/ 4gigs of ram. Nvidia 9400M graphics.
2 Things happen, one is that a few times a day ill get a "Nvidia Windows Kernel mode driver, version 186.81 failed" error. The symtoms of which are a black screen for a few seconds and then the driver restarts and all is well.
I know 186.81 is the latest 9400M driver. So im not sure why this happens but maybe it relates to my other issue.
My second issue is that the system will, as best as i can describe it, "hang" for a second or two. When i say hang i do not mean freeze to the point of needing to restart, its more that the "hang" happens and a few seconds later its as if nothing happened (this issue is very fequent).
Anyone else ever see or hear anything like this? Please let me know if there is a better place to post this question as well.
    Thanks!
P.S. Posted this somewhere else and got 1 reply so far, pasted below:
Okay, how about uninstall or roll back the driver?
    use Driver Sweeper 2
just let Windows 7 install its own driver
more like the hang is hard drive has spun down
I would recommend creating your own thread and question instead.
    by "the hatter"

Hello guys and thanks for your answers.
I thought that my problem was linked to UEFI, so I reinstalled the os with BIOS and MBR. Unfortunately I had the same problem, with one difference: the auto/default resolution of GRUB and FrameBuffer was 800x600 instead of 1920x1080 for UEFI.
About the nouveau driver, I need 3D acceleration to play games so I need the proprietary driver.
So I decided to test the X server to see if something got wrong.
I uninstalled the nvidia driver and reboot to have my framebuffer back.
    Then I edit the ~/.xinitrc file :
        xterm & sleep 10
I reinstalled the nvidia driver and reboot : GRUB, then framebuffer for 1 second, then a black screen.
I tried to log in: login + [Enter] + password + [Enter]
I waited 2s then I entered the "startx" command.
And the xterm window appeared. And the best is after the 10s the X server shuts down and the framebuffer was back !!! Unbelievable !!!
So I continued the installation : Gnome + Gdm.
After the reboot : Grub, then framebuffer for 1 second, then a black screen, then Gdm login screen !!!
So it seems to be a problem with nvidia driver and the framebuffer.
After the Gnome + Gdm installation I managed to display the framebuffer in tty2. But I don't know if tty2 was working before (when tty1 only display black screen).
My conclusion and installation tip is to not reboot after the nvidia driver installation and to install a desktop environment + a display manager and to pray to not have problem.

  • Solve Drive self-ejects and System Hangs when using MULTIPLE external drives!

I've discovered what I think is the underlying reason for many folks reporting similar problems.  I bet that I can predict the GUIDs of the drives/docks/cases you're having trouble with!  I bet that if you look in Disk Utility, if you click on the drives, you'll find "Connection ID 13757101839304263"!
Oh and if you look in System Profiler and click on 'FireWire' or 'USB' you'll find the GUID 0x30E002E0454647 !
What are the odds?  I shouldn't be able to predict them; theyr'e supposed to be unique, after all, but google that number and you'll see that a great many devices all use that GUID.   (13757101839304263 in decimal is the same thing as 30E002E0454647 in hex.)
Mac OS seems to rely on them to be unique, and has fits when they aren't.  I haven't found a total solution yet, but in the meantime, running this in Terminal can help:
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleFWOHCI.k ext/
Sometimes it helps to run this first to unload before loading the kext (kernel extension):
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleFWOHCI.k ext/
Enter your password if/when prompted, of course.
In most cases, if you contact your hard drive manufacturer, they'll provide a utility that will fix the drive so that it actually has a truly unique GUID.
I'm mad at Cavalry for hiding the problem and refusing to fix it, W.R.T. the two 1TB HDs I bought from them for around $500, when that was the going price.
I figured it'd be helpful to create a user tip off the discussion in this thread: Disk Drive ejecting itself - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2151621?start=615&tstart=0     This is my first attempt to create a tip.  I'm not sure I'm doing it right, but here goes.

Sorry but this is just a really bad idea.
    1. The airport is ancient.. your speed will be terrible.
    2. Hubs filled with USB drives are never reliable.. disks refuse to spin up.. become unavailable.
    No.. don't do it.
Plug USB3 hub into the mini and use multiple decent hard drives .. that is fine.. use thunderbolt hub.. use thunderbolt drives if you can afford it.. but never use USB drives on the network.
    3. Time Machine is not reliable to external drive on Airport Extreme.. Apple do not support it in any Extreme except the latest one.
If you want the material available to the network buy a NAS. You can buy a cheap NAS of 8TB or so and another 8TB of USB drives which you plug into the NAS for backup.. however.. iphoto is not supposed to ever be put on network drives..
Apple explicitly states you will corrupt it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
    And I quote
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss. If you use both iPhoto and Aperture with the same library, using a Mac OS X Extended formatted volume is recommended. For more information, see Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library.
For backup of the drives.. use Carbon Copy Cloner.. it is much better than TM as you can setup different job.. TM is really a single function.. !!

  • Possible HDD problem - clicking sound and system hangs on Qosmio G30-116

    Hi,
I just got my G30-116 back from service (screen replacement) and after 2 days another problem. It just keeps hanging out.
I did not change a thing since I got it and now it just stops working on occasional things like browsing the internet. It has not happened before. And my biggest worry is the clicking sound that my hard drive makes.
What can be wrong? It did not crush before I have sent it to service, not I think my hard drive is faulty... Thanks

What to say? If you can not find out why freezing problem occurs try to preinstall OS with delivered recovery DVD.
Anyway according to your description I am afraid there is some serious problem with HDD and it can be just worse then now. Please be sure your data are backed up.
Please contact service again and explain them the situation. If the HDD is defective you will get new one and if they have the HDD on stock it can be replaced very fast. G30 is very nice unit and I hope you will be satisfied. Few days ago my friend has visited me and we have tested his G30 with HD-DVD drive on my LCD TV. I just can tell you one thing: I am really impressed about HD picture quality.
    Good luck!

  • Unusual disk read write and system lockup - Gen 1 MacPro dual Intel

I have had this issue for a while - but I think it is getting worse (or I'm just more tired of it). The disks start reading/writing ( I can see it in Activity Monitor) and continue for several minutes. Meanwhile, the system is fully occupied and cant be used.
In the Activity Monitor window, I notice that ICalExternalSync is using up nearly a gig or memory and 2 gigs virtual memory - is this normal?
Also, the kernal_task item is using up 58 threads, another gig of virtual memory but just 80mb of real memory. Just seems odd.
    Any suggestions?

    Whats the deal!
my sound card dont like this motherboard, ive had ram in this thing that it didnt like now this!!  IS this MOBO  PIECE OR WHAT!>
    Thanks,

You are probably loading something the videocard doesn't like.  Try to load windows in safemode.  Keep hitting F8 during start up and you'll get a menu which has "start up in safemode" option.  If you can get windows to start, everything looks terrible (256 colors, 480x640 etc).  Reinstall the video drivers.
    Is your board a 6330 or 6380?

  • Are FF4.0.12 and Adobe win,2,159,1 compatable? Since I updated both 5 days ago, I cannot use Facebook or play games. Adobe says it is a FF4 problem so I downloaded 3.6.17 but no help. System hangs.

XP, 128 bit,ff3.6.17 now but no help.
Since I updated both, in Facebook my system hangs repeatedly
Only hard reboot and open new session will let me back on. I have been talking to Adobe support for 3 days and got the advice to put FF3.6.17 back on. It is worse when trying to scroll or trying to play a game. Cursor freezes and system hangs. I need some help pls. Which plugin is best when trying to use facebook and games on FF4.12? DOESN'T ANYONE KNOW OF ANY HELP? Just give me the name of a plugin that FF likes and a Web address. I need to be able to use my browser and would like to play some of my games. PLEASE!!!

Hey, I really need some help. Doesn't anyone know?
Just tell me a plugin that will work and not hang FF and give me a website. PLEASE.

  • Intensive slider control use may lead to LabVIEW hang and system instability when coupled to event loop "Value Change"

Occasionally, over the past year or two, I have noticed on different machines and versions of LabVIEW (8.0 and 8.5) that intensive operation of the LabVIEW slider control (holding down the left mouse button and shaking the mouse quickly back and forth to move the slider for several seconds) may cause LabVIEW to hang with high CPU usage (50% on my current test machine, which has a Pentium IV "hyperthreaded" processor, so 50% is the max that a single thread can take up). In some instances, after the LabVIEW process is forced to quit, the system itself becomes unstable (more high CPU usage) or hangs, up to and including the need for a hard restart. I have seen this behavior both when handling slider change events the "old fashioned" way with a while loop and a case structure; and also when using a while loop with an event structure handling the "Value Change" event for the slider.
Attached is an .rtf file dump of the front panel and block diagram of a simple test VI that replicates this problem in my hands (using an event structure). The loop count runs to at least several hundred iterations before the crash occurs.
At least for the "old fashioned" loop handling method, adding a forced wait of a few dozen msec per loop didn't seem to be a workaround. I haven't tried this idea with the event structure, but don't expect joy to follow. The possibility of a system hang discourages aggressive experimentation.
Is this a known issue? Can anyone else replicate it (carefully)? In any case, I'd welcome other suggestions for workarounds.
    Thanks,
    Darin Nelson

    Hang Slider.rtf ‏683 KB

Thanks for all your responses, and especially to those who are waggling their mice around trying to reproduce this. I'll respond to (most aspects of) the last several posts in one message.
    LabViewGuruWannabe:
I'll see if I can get the original code to post in a separate message, I posted the .rtf originally because I thought there might be filtering on forum posts (I'm sort of new here). But I doubt you re-created it wrong.
The "more modern" test hardware was an Intel Core2 , 2.4 GHz, 2Gb RAM, on an Intel 965 family motherboard. As I said, it took me two tries to trigger the error on this hardware; in the case where it triggered, I was at almost 12000 iterations before things went south. 10000 iterations, therefore, might not be enough--or you might never get it, for all I know. My Pentium 4 Hyperthreaded machine (3.2 GHz, 2 Gb RAM) triggers the hang much more easily (always within 2500 iterations, usually within 1000), so there seems to be some hardware dependence here. Maybe the workaround is just to use hardware recent enough that no one not under the influence of strange compulsions will accidentally trigger the hang.
    TonP:
After reading your suggestion, I tried something even more radical  -- getting rid of the handling code altogether. I took the slider node out of the while loop, and removed all code inside the "Slide" case of the event structure.
On my Pentium 4 machine, the hang triggered after 677 iterations.

  • Random system hang-ups with Kernel 3.2.1-1 and catalyst 11.12

    Hello,
i have a very strange problem for the last month or so (i'm afraid i cannot say, when it exactly happened the first time or if it was after a upgrade): My system just randomly crashes. I haven't yet found out when it exactly crashes and how to reproduce it. But it happens almost every 2-3 days.
When the system hangs up, the last second of sound repeat over and over again. I can't move my mouse anymore as well as typing has no effect. I cannot change to another terminal. I cannot ssh into the laptop nor can i ping it.
In /var/log/messages.log, there is nothing usefull.. It just ends with the old kernel messages and then the new ones, when the system restarts. No error or so.
System runs on a Thinkpad X121e with AMD E-350 CPU. I have installed catalyst 11.12 with xorg-server 1.11.3. I will now compile catalyst 12.1 and see if it happens again.
Does anyone have a clue why the system crashes? Has it anything to do with catalyst?
    Best regards,
    pyro

isofluran wrote:Again, as I metioned before, the problem is likely not a hardware one but it is actually related to the kernel update (2.6.19)  or to an update which was performed at the same time.
Can anyone give a proposal for a step by step procedure to isolate the problem?
As I don't believe these crashes are related to anything but the kernel, one way of debugging your issues could be:
    * boot Knoppix
    * zcat /proc/config.gz | some non-volatile media
    * boot arch
    * get the current ABS
    * replace config in kernels/kernel26 with the one from Knoppix
    * makepkg
    * install and test
When that kernel runs, try to diff the two configs and see what's changed in arch. Also comparing both kernel versions if no significant changes exist might hint on the kernel being the problem.

Due to eyesight issues, I need to have the menu bars of programs in easy-to-read font and picture size.  Specifically, the menu bar across the top (File, Edit, View, etc.), and the menu bar on the left side with the graphic depiction of options.
In earlier versions of Windows (e.g. XP), whenever I changed the screen resolution on my computer to a lesser resolution in order to show the link icons on my desktop in a larger, more readable size, all the software programs, including yours, appeared on my screen with the menu bars in the larger font size that I needed.
However, in Windows 7, this is not the case.  Even though I have selected the lowest resolution, making the icons on my desktop extremely large, I cannot read the options across the top menu bar of your program, nor the pull-down menu items that they contain.  I cannot see the graphic depictions of options on the left side of the screen. They are all too small.  How can I make your program increase the size?

CS6 is not high-DPI compatible/ enabled and that can't be changed. If you cannot6 make it work with your operating system means, then short of joining Creative Cloud and using newer versions there is nothing you can do.

  • Crashes and read-only file systems

Notice: I apolgize for the long post, I've tried to be as thorough as possible.  I have searched everywhere for possible solutions, but things I've found end up being temporary workarounds or don't apply to my situation.  Any help, even as simple as, "have you checked out XYZ log, it's hidden here", would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks
I'm not sure what exactly caused the issues below, but they did start to happen within a day of running pacman -Syu.  I hadn't run that since I first installed Arch on December 2nd of this year.
    Setup:
    Thinkpad 2436CTO
    UEFI/GPT
    SSD drive
    Partitions: UEFISYS, Boot, LVM
The LVM is encrypted and is broken up as: /root, /var, /usr, /tmp, /home
All LVM file systems are EXT4 (used to have /var and /tmp as ReiserFS)
The first sign that something was wrong was gnome freezing.  Gnome would then crash and I'd get booted back to the shell with all filesystems mounted as read-only.  I started having the same issues as this OP:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150704
At the time, I had /var and /tmp as ReiserFS, and would also get reiserfs_read_locked_inode errors.
When shutting down (even during non-crashed sessions) I would notice this during shutdown:
    Failed unmounting /var
    Failed unmounting /usr
Followed by a ton of these:
device-mapper: remove ioctl on <my LVM group> failed: Device or resource busy
Nother of these errors had ever appeared before.
After hours of looking for solutions (and not finding any that worked) I was convinced (without any proof) that my Reiser file systems were corrupt and so I reformatted my entire SSD and started anew - not the Arch way, I know   I set all logical volumes as EXT4.
    After started anew, I noticed
device-mapper: remove ioctl on LVM_SysGroup failed: Device or resource busy
was still showing up, even with just a stock Arch setup (maybe even when powering off via Arch install ISO, don't remember).  After a lot of searching, I found that most people judged it a harmless error, so I ignored it and continued setting up Arch.
I set up Gnome and a basic LAMP server, and everything seemed to work for a couple of hours.  Soon after, I got the same old issues back.  The System-journald issue came back and per the workaround on https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150704 and a couple other places, I rotated the journals and stopped journald from saving to storage.  That seemed to stop THOSE errors from at least overwhelming the shell, but I would still get screen freezes, crashes, and read-only file systems.
I had to force the laptop to power off, since poweroff/reboot/halt commands weren't working (would get errors regarding the filesystems mounted as read-only).
I utilized all disk checking functions possible.  From running the tests (SMART test included) that came as part of my laptop's BIOS to full blown fsck.  All tests showed the drive was working fine, and Fsck would show everything was either clean, or
    Clearing orphaned inode ## (uid=89, gid=89, mode=0100600, size=###
Free blocks count wrong (###, counted=###)
Which I would opt to fix.  Nothing serious, though.
I could safely boot back into Arch and use the system fine until the system decides to freeze/crash and do the above all over again.
The sure way of recreating this for me is to run a cron job on a local site I'm developing. After a brief screen freeze (mouse still moveable but everything is otherwise unreponsive) I'll systemctl status mysqld.service and notice that mysqld went down.
It seems that it's at this point my file systems are mounted as read only, as trying to do virtually anything results in:
unable to open /var/db/sudo/...: Read-only file system
After some time, X/Gnome crashes and I get sent back to shell with
    ERROR: file_stream_metrics.cc(37)
    RecordFileError() err = 30 source = 1 record = 0
    Server terminated successfully (0)
Closing log file.or_delegate.h(30)] sqlite erro1, errno 0: SQL logic error or missing database[1157:1179
rm: cannot remove '/tmp/serverauth.teuroEBhtl': Read-only file system
Before all this happened, I was using Arch just fine for a few weeks.  I wiped the drives and started anew, and this still happens with just the minimal number of packages installed.
I've searched for solutions to each individual problem, but come across a hack that doesn't solve anything (like turning off storing logs for journal), or the solution doesn't apply to my case.
At this point, I'm so overwhelmed I'm not even sure where exactly to pick up figuring this issue out.
Thanks in advance for any help

Did this occur when you booted from the live/install media?
What is your current set up? That is, partitions, filesystems etc. I take it you have not yet reinstalled X but are in the default CLI following installation?
If turning off log storage didn't help, reenable it so that you may at least stand a chance of finding something useful.
What services, if any, are you running? What non-default daemons etc.?
Does it happen if you keep the machine off line?
Have you done pacman -Syu since installation and dealt with any *.pacnew files?
