Cascaded WRT300N routers

Howdy,
I have a Newbie question ... networking is a mysterious subject for me
I have a cable modem and two WRT300N routers
THe cable modem connects to port on 1st router (router 1) which is set up as the DHCP server using 192.168.1.1
A connection from port 2 goes to the second router (router 2) which has an address of 192.168.2.1 and has DHCP disabled and the firewall disabled. This router is located in a different building
Wireless and wired connections work properly from each router (have different wireless SSID's and security for each)
On the router that acts as a DHCP server, I can connect directly (via cable) with my laptop to access the router configuration - http://192.168.1.1.
On the router that has the DHCP server disabled, I have not been able to connect to it using the cat5 cable. In order to access the configuration, I have to disconnect the link from the DHCP server, reset the router to the factory defaults and then I can access it using 192.168.1.1, make my changes and then set it back up to act as a non-dhcp server (which is a pain)
Couple of questions:
- how can I access the second router's setup information on address 192.168.2.1 when DHCP is disabled?
- with the above configuration, should this setup affect a laptop's boot speed when they only connect wirelessly to router 1 (the dhcp server)
- last but not least, how do I access the admin information from a wireless connection if I have that enabled? The router asks me for the user name and password and although I have changed the admin password, I don't recall changing the user name. I did try admin as the user name with my new password and it didn't work.
Thanks in advance for the help.
PS .. I searched for the answers to these questions and although I found lots of great info, I didn't find these specific ones
PSS .. This setup belongs to a friend and he asked me to help.
PSSS ... The router firmware is old and has not been updated yet. I am somewhat reluctant to do that to something that I do not own since I do not know how to recover if it goes badly.

You just need to change the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and you would be able to access this router.

  • Cascading WRT300N via wireless

I have 2 WRT300N routers and need to be able to cascade them so that they can connect to the same cable modem.  The instuctions in technical support only explain for a physical connection and in my case the routers are on 2 completely different floors of my home with no means of physical connectivity between them.

in such case it is not possible to connect both the routers using the same cable connection ....
Because ... the router needs internet connection fron modem or router ..... using HARDWIRED connection ...
So one router will work with Cable modem connected to it ... .other will only kept wirelessly .... so i will suggest you to bring WET200 for second floor ..... this is wireless ethernet bridge ...

  • Cascade 2 routers?

New to the forum, so I apologize if this has been covered. It probably has and if so directions to the correct thread would be appreciated.
I originally installed a Linksys 4 port router in my home. When we had this house built I wired it for ethernet myself. The point where the router is installed is very near the phone company debark as it enters the house. Problem is back then wireless was a thing of the future and since everything ran on cables it didn't matter that this thing was off on one end of the house.
Now it does matter, because with the advent of wireless I have upgraded to a Linksys WRT54G2 a couple years ago (I think). But NOW I'm developing 2 new problems. The first (1) is that I don't have enough ports to support all the wired devices we could have connected - I'm flat out of ports and need at least 2 more. The second (2) problem is the wireless signal is just weak enough to drop signals on some devices in the farthest reaches of our network. Most work fine (laptops) but some do not (Kindle, smart phones).
What I want to do is install a new 8 port router at the current router location (solves problem 1). I want to then move the existing WRT54G2 to a more central location and connect it to the first router which I hope will solve problem (2).
I'd like some advice on what 8-port router to buy, and any advice on installation of a cascade system of routers like this.
It seems like all I see nowadays are wireless routers. If the new 8-port router is a wireless router will it interfere with the other wireless router, or can they be used together to boost the signal even more?
Thanks in advance for any help you may offer!

Again: do you have an ethernet cable running between both rooms??
If you have an ethernet cable or it's relatively easy too install one you want to use an ethernet cable and not a wireless bridge, in particular of you have a media center on one end and think about video streaming or similar.
If you have an ethernet connection you don't want a wireless bridge nor a wireless repeater. You don't want a WES610N nor a RE1000. Both devices connect wirelessly to your main router. You don't want to do that if you have a wired connection already.
A wired connection is far superior to a wireless link. It's like 95 MBit/s error-free compared to maybe 20 Mbit/s (under very good circumstances, no interference and both devices not too far apart). And the wireless link is "shared" with your neighbors. The 95 Mbit/s on the cable are yours only.
If you have an ethernet cable you thus want a switch like the SE2500. And you want an access point. An access point connects wireless clients to your wired network. Directly. Not through another wireless link to your main router. You connect an access point like the WAP610N.
Or a wireless router like the new E series router. You can configure the E series router as access point. And the E series router comes with a 4 port LAN port, i.e. you get 4 ethernet ports on that end.

  • Cascading 2 routers, lost time synchronization

    Hi,
I have 2 cascaded routers (LAN-LAN): RV220W (main) and E3000 (slave), with DHCP and NAT off. Both routers are set with the same Wifi signals (same settings, apart from channels). My aim is to have a parental rule to switch off wireless connection for  some  MAC/IP addresses. All rules are properly setup, everything is supposed to work, but my issue is that the second router doesn't keep the time, hence the parental schedule doesn't trigger properly.
Any suggestion? I am going crazy with this now...

The router must be connected to the WAN port for time updates.  Since your 2nd router is not, it will not keep the time.

  • Cascading Linksys Routers

    Howdy YouALL,
My first forum ever and post. I got this idea since getting the new Linksys WRT1900AC router.  I try to stay up with all the new stuff.  Now I have all this old stuff laying around; that being a EA6500AC, E3200N and a WRT54G routers. I also have this Linksys WUMC710 media connector thats being laying here in a box for a year or so.  Now my idea is hooking the old routers to the media connector and place them at one end of my house and then send a signal to the WRT1900 (now my main router) which is at the other end of my house.  That would be about 60 ft. and 2 walls.   I get my internet by whats called Line-of-site.  It is suspose to be some kind of Motorola radio signal.  Its not much, about 3-5 mb download and 1 mb up.  It's a strong signal though and the best I can get other than dial up, since I live out here in the boondocks, oops, hope thats not a bad word.
Well, to all you folks out there, does my idea have any merits ?  Can it be done ?  If so, any ideas on where to start ?  You see, I live alone with my little tail waggers and I like to watch a movie now and then,  usually Netflix or Amazon.  Seems like lately I am getting more spin on that little circle. I have the Linksys PLWK400 powerline extender kit laying in a box but can't get it set up.  The setup disc says I need Windows 7 with SP1.  Well, I have Windows 8.1 so it won't run the disc. Can't find a fix nowheres.
Well, thats enough talking for me for one day.  YouALL have a nice day !

If you plan to use the WiFi on the additonal APs, you an use the same SSID names and PWs on each radio, however channels need to be dfferent and SSID names should dffer per 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

  • Personal File Sharing fails on network of (2) cascading Linksys routers.

    Topography:
Comcast cable modem attached to (WAN-port) Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port).
    Linksys WRT54G (WAN-port) attached to Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port).
    Linksys BEFSR41 starting @ is 192.168.1.1.
    Linksys WRT54G starting @ is 192.168.2.1.
All systems attached to either the ethernet ports of the BEFSR41,
the ethernet ports of the WRT54G, or Wi-Fi of the WRT54G connect
    to the Internet flawlessly.
    Problem:
Using Personal File Sharing (Connect to Server…) all Apple systems
(all MacOS X v10.4.7) only see other systems attached to the router
that they are attached to & vice versa, i.e. systems attached to BEFSR41
can not see systems attached to WRT54G & vice versa.
    Any ideas?

I think you could get around this by changing the subnet mask to 255.255.254.0, (maybe 255.255.0.0), but not sure if it would open Security problems for you.
With the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0, you can only see other computers in the range where only the last number is different... if it was set to 0.0.0.0.0, then theoretically you could connect to any Computer in the world, havent tried it though!:-)
Other ways exist of one router handing out all the IPs, but that's for later.

  • Cascading two Linksys routers questions

wanted to clear up some things before I purchase my 2nd router.
So currently, i have a wrt54g2 connected to my cable modem.
What I want to do is add a wireless n router with gigabit to my LAN.
So I would just follow the instructions on cascading the routers here: http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3733&p_created=11520...
This makes the router a repeater pretty much and uses the same IP for the new computers, 192.168.1.x
So my question is, if I connected to the 2nd router via LAN will I be also in the same IP range and can see the other computers on the first router?
Reason why I'm doing this, old router hosts just normal everyday computers via wifi and lan ports.
New router will handle htpc and media storage server via lan ports and netflix streaming via wifi.
Thats why I want the gigabit ports, b/c there will be alot of media transferred between the htpc and media storage server.
I'm using the wireless n for a samsung blu-ray player that can do netflix, pandora and also read shared drives.  It can read divx and h.264, so I thought the wireless n throughput will be fine on N and not bogged on g.
any opinions and help would be appreciated.

Yes, the second router will be in the same network range and the device which will be connected to the second router wil get the IP from the first router. To do so you need to the disable the DHCP on your second router.

  • Cascading WRT54G to an existing network!!!

    Hi,
The company bought a new WRT54G Wireless router and wants to cascade it to an existing network.
    Here's the setting:
    1st Floor:
    ISP = Globe Broadband
    Modem/Router = Prolink Huricane 9300G IP=10.0.0.138 used as gateway
    Switch = Surecom IP=10.0.0.x
    2nd Floor:
    2 switches:
1st Switch = 192.168.0.X > not connected to the existing network (from the 1st flr)
2nd Switch = 10.0.0.x > connected to the switch from the 1st flr.
Now, the company wants to add a file server on the 2nd floor and connect it to the 192.168.0.x switch and also add a wireless router for internet connection.
Can anyone please give me some ideas how to set it up?
    thanks

Thanks for the reply. I've been reading the support here about cascading 2 routers and they have 2 solutions, one which is what you have advised and the other is that to use the wan port and use a different IP. Can you explain to me further why it is the first 1st solutions is the best than the other and what are the pros and cons of these two setup? Thanks....good day...

  • Connecting two EA6500 routers via wireless bridge

Hi, I want to know how can we bridge two EA6500 routers via wireless. I do not want to use the lan cable. Please help.
    Thanks,
    anandp

This setup is not possible. You can only cascade the routers via wired connection. The access points on these routers are mainly transmitters, they're not receivers so you can't associate them wirelessly. You can, however, get a wireless bridge to do the job. Check out the Dual Band N Entertainment Bridge WET610N and Wireless N Universal Media Connector WES610N.

  • Trying to connect my 2 wireless routers wirelessly (wrt54g2 to e2500)

Well I contacted cisco's technical support to ask them if they know how to do it but the respond with it cannot be done. I google searched before calling and found dozens of people saying it can be done but not saying thoroughly of how to do it. I did find the dd-wrt which allows you to do it but it updates the firmware on your router if you mess up it makes your router comatose. I am just looking to find anyone that can help me with this. I have a 4k sq ft house and my router is on one side of it and the computer and ps3 both systems are non wireless an are on the other side of the house. I have my main router linksys e2500 and my secondary linksys wrt54g2.

I'm not so sure with using DD-WRT firmware on the linksys router will make it work cascaded to the E2500 router. Using the linksys' firmware, what I know is that it's not possible to cascade 2 routers wirelessly. The routers are designed as access points which needs a dhcp server like the modem or a primary router that's connected to the the modem for them to work. There are other options though to extend your wireless network on the other side of your house. You can try using either  WES610N or Powerline Adapters.

  • E900 chained routers - double NAT

I understand double and triple NAT is unstable.
How do I configure the routers to fix this issue?  DMZ?  port-forwarding?
    Here is my setup:
    ---comcast modem--->E900 router--->Netgear router
I want to split internet access from a single DHCP IP from Comcast to two separate networks; the business network for the E900 router and the guest network for Netgear router.
    Please keep in mind:
-I want the E900 and Netgear networks to be completely separate and invisble to each other for security concerns.
-i want hosts to connect to the networks with no special configuration required so I'd like DHCP on both routers, if possible
    thx for any help

You definitely don't want to put the E900 in to bridge mode. Putting the E900 in to bridge mode would not meet your security criteria.
Your initial statement in your first post "I understand the double and triple NAT is unstable" is an incorrect statement. I currently have a triple NAT setup and there's nothing unstable at all. The only time people experience instability and problems is when they don't cascade NAT routers properly. In other words, if you try to cascade NAT routers and put them both on the same lan segment.........you'll most likely have problems.
Why do you want to bypass NAT?
It appears you have the routers cascaded properly, so there's no need to bypass NAT.
If you post the make and model of your modem, someone here on the forum can tell you if it's a NAT router or just a plain dumb modem.
Ok no problem then.  thx for all the replies

  • WRT300N used with a WAP54G as a bridge

This may be a simple question.  If I am using a WAP54G as a bridge between two WRT300N routers, have I effectively eliminated the benefits of MIMO/802.11n?

it will... not exactly eliminated but the G-standard of your wap54g will affect the 2nd wireless N-router....
if you are connecting to the wireless N-router #1, and you're using an N-adapter then you will get the N-speed and range.. but if you will connect your say laptop to the 2nd wireless router, you will most likely get only the G-standard speed and range... since by rule, different 802.11x standards which are interoperable with each other will only get it's higher denominator... meaning to say, if the B-card will connect to the G-standard router(set to mixed mode), will only get it's maximum of 11Mbps and even if the G-card will connect to the same router the B-card is connecting, it will most likely get the 11Mbps as well cuz the router will have to adjust to the B-card and act as like a B-router.

  • Need to "link" two routers

Hi guys, I need advices here.
I just bought a new TV and a new DVD that can access the Internet for interactive stuff. But for that, I need a specific wireless key from the manufacturers or a LAN connection. I don't want to buy the wireless key but I want to use the LAN connections (1 for the TV and 1 for the DVD). Unfortunaly, I don't want to pass a cable all over my house just to link those new devices to the Internet.
Since I have two wireless routers, I was wondering if I could "wirelessly" link my routers to save cable. All my "ordinary" stuff will still be connected to my main router.
Here is what I plan to do:
Connect my modem to my main router (WRT610N v2).
Wirelessly link my secondary router (WRT54G v3) to my main router (WRT610N v2). [this is where I need help]
Connect both TV and DVD by wire to my secondary router.
I hope you can help me with this...
    Thanks guys!

Sorry, you can not connect two routers wirelessly with Linksys firmware.  You must use a wire to cascade two routers.  However there is 3rd party firmware that will allow this, DD-WRT.  Search the web and see if it will work for you.

  • Can I have 2 routers with different security and broadcast modes off same modem?

    Hi
Apologies for not being too technical.  The background is that I have a mac and a dell laptop, both of which used to work off a Linksys WRT54G wireless router even though both computers are set up for N routers.  I then bought a Logitech Squeezebox internet radio, again working off the Linksys G.  The security on all 3 was WEP.
I was then advised to upgrade my router to N and change security to WPA.  I bought a Netgear WNR2000 N wireless router as the local shop did not have any linksys n routers.  I tried to set up the three devices to this router but it seems that the radio will only broadcast G and WEP security.
It then appeared that I would have to downgrade the other two computers back to G and WEP also and when I did that the internet speed really slowed down.
My query is this, can I set up the Netgear N to be linked to my modem and broadcasting at N and WPA, thus linking my computers at top speed, and then can I link my Linksys to my Netgear and have that broadcast a different network on G/WEP for my radio?  If I can or if there is a better solution could someone tell me in easy steps how to do it?
    Very much obliged.

You don't have to downgrade your router. Just enable mixed mode so it will allow wireless N and G devices to connect to the router. However, it will share the same wireless security mode.
With regards to your query, the answer is yes. You can setup two (2) wireless routers, one providing N and WPA while the other one providing G and WEP. It might be a little complicated though. You have to cascade the routers. Both should have different SSID and channel.
Try this setup first before changing the wireless options.

  • Suggestions on DHCP using cascading switches

Is there any reason you can't create a different vlan and create a new scope for that vlan on your current dhcp server along with helper addresses on your switches? It seems you're over complicating things as of right now.

gents,we like to provide a WLAN Network for guests in our Company which is connected through a different Provider than our internal Network.I connected the incoming hardline to one router - providing WLAN #1 with DHCP.I like to route it to two floors, using the LAN environment.I have only ONE line available to get the Provider to our Switch-rack.My idea is to connectthe LAN-port of WLAN-Router #1 to the Switch rack and attach another WLAN-Routers to the other floors. My question is: what is the best way to provideDHCP ?a) Router#1 is doing DHCP and all connected secondary routers are just passing through.b) every Router is doing DHCP for himselfI once read that there could be Problems using cascading Switches/Routers. Any enlightment here?
