Cascading WRT54G to an existing network!!!

Hi,
The company bought a new WRT54G Wireless router and wants to cascade it to an existing network.
Here's the setting:
1st Floor:
ISP = Globe Broadband
Modem/Router = Prolink Huricane 9300G IP=10.0.0.138 used as gateway
Switch = Surecom IP=10.0.0.x
2nd Floor:
2 switches:
1st Switch = 192.168.0.X > not connected to the existing network (from the 1st flr)
2nd Switch = 10.0.0.x > connected to the switch from the 1st flr.
Now, the company wants to add a file server on the 2nd floor and connect it to the 192.168.0.x switch and also add a wireless router for internet connection.
Can anyone please give me some ideas how to set it up?

Thanks for the reply. I've been reading the support here about cascading 2 routers and they have 2 solutions, one which is what you have advised and the other is that to use the wan port and use a different IP. Can you explain to me further why it is the first 1st solutions is the best than the other and what are the pros and cons of these two setup? Thanks....good day...

Connecting a wrt54g to an existing wireless network

Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to create a second wireless network by connecting a wrt54g to our existing wireless network?
Our main router is upstairs, connection in the downstairs office is terrible, plus it's being used by a team that would like their own network anyways. Can I plug the wrt54g into the main router, assign it a static external IP and create a second wireless network?

I see that what I was trying to do is possible but before I start let me ask your opinion.
My initial goal for a seperate network was to give Router 2 a static external IP and connect our server to router 2 so external users would always be able to access it at the same address in case Router 1 ever had an IP change (I don't have constant access to router 1 and am not supposed to be fiddling with it!)
The secondary goal was to improve the wireless signal for those of us downstairs and I figure having Router 2 down there would provide a nice strong signal.
I have realized now that dyndns can solve my issue with Router 1's IP changing (even if it's once a month it's an issue for remote users accessing our server). Dyndns will re-point our host name to the new IP if it ever changes.
But I still have the issue of a very weak signal in the downstairs office.
Because I'm seeking the simplest, easiest to manage solution as I'm far from a network guru, do you think a better option may be to get a repeater or something like that for our downstairs office to just boost the signal from Router 1? If so, any recommendations?

Can anybody help me to access Internet with my existing network

Dear All Recently I purchased new WRT 54G wireless router. Also I have tied up with new ISP to give wireless internet access to some of the my Higher authority employees only. My office network setup is as shown below Local Ip range : 172.18.0.0 to 172.18.2.254 subnet mask : 255.255.0.0 Default gateway : 172.18.0.50 Wireless Router configured as : 1) configured all ISP settings 2) configured LAN site setting( But I had to setup lan as 192.160.1.X i.e the required by ISP ). 3) connected ISP lan port of WRT54G to cable coming from ISP Modem 4) Connected Local port( any one of 4 ports) to my existing switch(existing LAN----172.18.x.x network) Now suppose I configure user laptop to access new ISP internet through wireless.I have done following setting Wireless LAN setting : Ip address : 192.168.1.2( I can give any IP of network 192.168.1.x) subnet mask:255.255.255.0 Default gateway :192.168.1.1 DNS : Automatic I can access the new ISP internet without any problem with WRT54g router. But the problem is while accessing the new ISP internet( Using 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0/192.168.1.1 network),Also I want to access my existing network( 172.18.0.0/255.255.0.0/172.18.0.50). Since I am very weak in routing the network, can anybody help me out to do routing setting in linksys WRT54g router so as to access my New ISP internet using existing network( 172.18.0.0/255.255.0.0/172.18.0.50). O.K. Still the crucial question remains whether you want the separation of the ISPs enforced or not, i.e. do you actively want to prevent someone to switch to the other ISP simply by reconfiguring some settings on the computer or not?
If you don't want to enforce the policy and it is enough to just use different IP settings on different computers then this would probably be the easiest solution.
If you can, install a DHCP server (e.g. on a Linux box) inside your network which does the DHCP address assignments. That way you can dynamically assign the proper addresses to the computers.
You can then assign the WRT an LAN IP address inside the 172.18 subnet. The DHCP server assigns anyone addresses inside your 172.18 subnet. However, you configure different gateway and dns server addresses depending on the computer. You configure the MAC addresses of those 'preferred' laptops the gateway address of the WRT and the public DNS servers of the new ISP. All other computers you assign the old gateway address of the old router and the DNS server addresses of the first ISP.
If you don't want to install your own DHCP server you can assign either pool static IP addresses, i.e. assign all preferred laptops static IP address including the gateway address of WRT and use DHCP only for the normal computers or vice versa.
What won't work reliably is to run two DHCP servers on both routers and connect the LAN of both together. You'll end up with computers picking up the wrong IP address from the wrong DHCP server.
Again, this separation only happens due to the different configuration of the computers. If anyone can freely reconfigure the computer he has it is easily possible to change the gateway address and thus swap the ISP. But as long as people comply with the rules it works.
If you want to enforce the separation you will have to install another router between the two gateway router. This third router passes traffic from the WRT subnet for the 172.18 subnet and accepts the return traffic. In the opposite direction the router does not forward traffic. You should even be able to use a standard NAT gateway router and hook up the internet port to the 172.18 subnet and the LAN port to the WRT. You then configure a static route on the WRT to forward packets for 172.18 subnet to the third router. If the third router does not NAT then you have to configure another route on the first router to forward traffic for WRT subnet (192.168.1.*) to the third router as well.

Linksys WRT1900AC connecting to existing network

My office has an existing network connection. So when I connect a PC to my network connection I get a 172.x.x.x IP address. I have a Linksys 1900AC , and want to connect 3 computers, and a USB HDD, and have my computers on a 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x network. The plan is to use port forwarding to be :172.x.x.x:12345 -> 192.168.1.10:8080172.x.x.x:12346 -> 192.168.1.11:8080172.x.x.x:12347 -> 192.168.1.12:8080 Now I have probably gone on the wrong path, but I cannot figure it out, and have had to reset the modem several times as I just couldn't get the "internet" side of the router to work, so I am not even at the point of getting it to do the port forwarding. Now should I be plug in the yellow "internet" cable to my office network? When I tried that, it didn't pick up the internet connection. I tried to manaully set up a "Static IP", and used all the current settings, but that didn't seem to work. I also somehow set it to "Bridged Mode" but then I couldn't connected to the Router, so ended up trying to start again and reset the modem. So at the moment, what is the best / easy to follow guide of connecting the WRT1900AC to an existing network. Thanks.

Hi, up! You may try to cascade the routers via LAN to WAN. First of, reset the router, and then power cycle it. Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the Ethernet ports of the main router to the Internet port of the WRT1900AC. You can then configure DHCP reservation on the WRT1900AC to reserve the IP addresses of each computer for you to do port forwarding.

How do I connect my Time Capsule to an Existing Network?

I've seen a few similar discussion threads and seem to suggest I can't do this without an Apple Router, but I just want to clarify:
I have a 3TB Time Capsule, I want to connect it to my existing Wireless Network so that I can set it up with Time Machine.
I have connected it to my current router (which is AT&T, not Apple) via an ethernet cable that's plugged in to a LAN port on the router, and the WAN port on the TC (I also tried this in a LAN port on TC but it didn't seem to make a difference).
I was able to find my TC on Airport Utlility, but when I try to select the Join Existing Network option it just keeps bringing me back to the Create New Network screen.
How do I fix this? Does it really need to be an Apple router? Am I just plugging the ethernet into the wrong port? Or should I just continue in the Create New Network screen and enter the same name and password as my existing network, or would that create a duplicate network?
Honestly I don't really care about extending the network or not, I just want to be able to wirelessly access the Time Capsule to use it with Time Machine.

i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

Need Time Capsule to join new existing network after Uverse box swap SSID

When I first bought my Time Capsule it was creating my wireless network.
Then last year we moved to a new house, and got Uverse service. I successfully changed Time Capsule's config to join the existing Uverse network, so the TC does backup and nothing else. (The Uverse box is in the basement, so the TC connects to that network and all client machines over the Uverse wifi.)
Now I just had problems with Uverse (lost voice service, and so they swapped their box, which means I have a new SSID (and password). So I need to change the config of the TC to join the different existing network. I've tried connecting an Ethernet cable to both the WAN and other-Ethernet ports on the back of the TC, but the Airport Utility on that desktop still doesn't recognize the TC.
What do I do?

Welcome to the discussions!
The problem is that the ethernet ports on the TC are not enabled when it "joins", so that type of connection between your computer and the TC won't work.
The other issue is that the TC is remembering the old wireless network and you can't access it that way any longer.
You'll need to perform a "hard reset" on the TC by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks more quickly, then reconfigure the device using the settings from the new wireless network.
This will not affect your existing backups, but you will need to reset Time Machine to point it as the Time Capsule again.
Open System Preferences
Click Time Machine
Click Select Disk
Click your Time Capsule
Click Use for Backups

Time Capsule only runs with 1,1Mbit up/down during data transfer, internet speed is ok, TC is used to extend an existing network

Hello Everyone,
I have a new 2TB Time Capsule running with a MacBook Air. I want to use the TC to access data (Aperture library, iTunes library, other Files) and to backup my MacBook Air via Time Machine. I set it up, integrated the TC in my Network (FritzBox) by choosing "extend existing network" and it works. BUT only with 1.1Mbit/second while writing or reading Data to/from it. Internet speed is very good, like it was before. While the 1.1Mbit/second seem to be ok with Aperture and iTunes (streaming music and movies) it is still painfully slow and I'm not realy happy with that
I've read that:
The 1.1Mbit problem is pretty common when Time Capsule is integrated and used to extend a network (bridge modus), it also looses all ethernet connectivity then (that woul explain why connecting it by ethernet didn't help during initial setup and data transfer)
Is there a solution besides ditching the Fritzbox and using the TC to build the network? Because basicly I still need the Fritzbox for its DECT features.

You have double hop wireless with this setup..
You should bridge the TC.. that is router bridge not wireless bridge, and plug the TC into the Frizyboy by ethernet.
Then you can setup the TC wireless to reinforce the fritzy..
Same wireless name as SSID.
Same security settings... really should be WPA2 AES or in TC personal.
Same password..
Just different wireless channel.
Then you can use 5ghz on the TC if you are up close and personal.

Do I need to setup my AirPort Express on a modem before trying to connect it wirelessly to my time capsule existing network?

I have an airport express that I used in another location. I brought it home and want to use it with my existing network and time capsule to do AirTunes. I can't get the Express to show up in my airport utility to even set it up. Do I need to connect it to my time capsule with an ethernet cable first to configure, or should it be showing up as a device to add to my network automatically?

1. i would restore the express to factory defaut by holding the reset button on the unit with a paperclip while you are powering it on
2. if it restored, you should be able to see it in your wifi icon at top of screen as "airport express"
or you can see it in airport utility
3. then if you want to connect it wirelessly to your time capsule, you would choose "extend network" and put in relevant security and password....this would make the express a wireless access point, fed by your time capsule(main router)
if you chose to do it wired which is a better way if you have access to ethernet port at wall, you would choose "create a wireless network" and then under the "network" tab you would choose "Bridge Mode".....this would make the express a wired access point, fed by your time capsule(main router)

How do I use Time Capsule for backup only over an existing network (or ethernet)

Ok, first, I have been using Mac now for about 2 years and every little thing I do is much harder than advertised. I have yet to experience the mythical ease of Apple products.
With that said, I was talked into buying this 2TB Time Capsule. Which right now seems to serve nicely as a very expensive paper weight.
Here's what I am trying to do. I was told I could use this as a wireless backup. I have a cable modem and router in my house. I do not want to insert Time Capsule as the router. I would like to either hook it up to the existing network or have it just wireless. Whatever works best for backup use.
I set the time capsule up to connect to an existing network. Which it did. Green light is on.
When I select it as a backup drive in Time Machine, it works. However it does not back up. It will say Waiting to Backup and do nothing. If I select Back Up Now on Time Machine, it says it cannot find the disk.
Is it possibly because I had used another backup disk prior and kept it? When I set the Time Capsule I selected to use both.
I am at a loss. I am not a techie. And there are more options of use than the instructions cover.

The problem is your method of connection I suspect.
The TC was always designed to plug into the main router. It does not have to be in the same room but it has to be ethernet connected.
Please post a few screenshots of the setup.. that makes it so much easier for me to work through it with you.
Posting screenshots here is easy.. press the little camera and select the shot from finder.
What I need is the summary page from your airport utility.. ie this one.
Then click on edit button which I have highlighted and show me the tabs for Internet, Network and wireless. eg this is the internet. (show me the whole thing.. I have cut it off to keep it small).
We can then work through the issues.

How many Airport devices do I need to extend an existing network?

I hope one of you might be able to help me with a problem.
I recently just moved to a different apartment, and my router (from my local internet provider) does not reach to all the rooms in the apartment.
Since I also wanted to stream wireless music in my home office I read that the Airport express would be a great solution to both extend the existing network and stream wireless from my Apple products.
I went to buy the Airport express, and asked the guy in the local authorized reseller of Apple products, if I could use this without connecting it via cables to my router (hence using it via wifi only). And he said yes, which I believed. However, after trying to set it up, and failed. I started searching for questions about my issue.
So:
Do I need two airport devices if I want to extend my existing network, when the router is in the living room, and the speakers that I want to stream from are located in my home office in the other end of the apartment? The area that I want to extend the existing network to is the bed room, next to the office.
So I thought that I could set the Airport express up in my office and connect it to the mini-jack from the speakers, and voila it would just do as I wanted to. But since I'm not a technical expert, I might have misunderstood, and I really do not want long ethernet cables running all over the place.
Is the only solution then to buy two devices? (Oh and for your information, I am not able to move the router to the office since there is no outlet for the internet, the only place it can be set up is in the living room).

You need two AirPorts if you want to wirelessly "extend" the network, which will provide more wireless coverage....since both AirPorts will be broadcasting a wireless network.
You only need one AirPort Express if all that you want to do is use it for AirPlay to pick up the wireless signal and "join" your existing wireless network. In order to do this, the Express must be able to receive a good wireless signal from your router.
To test if you have a good signal, take a laptop or mobile device to the area where you want to install the AirPort Express and check to make sure that you can get a good wireless connection at that location. If you can, then the AirPort Express should work well at the same point.

How to set up time capsule with existing network that uses airport express/extreme

I have an existing wirelss network using airport express. I want to upgrade to time capsule and use the A/P express upstairs. I dont want to delete the existing network.

I suggest to use your airport express to extend your wireless network that is created by your new time capsule

My Airport Express worked perfectly fine printing wirelessly and using air tunes wirelessly through connecting it to my existing Belkin wifi.....but somehow my Airport extreme doesnt seem to be happy with me doing the same process....

I gather you mean hooking up cables to your computer? If so the answer is yes. My printer is hooked up to my Airport Extreme through its usb port. I can print wireless flawlessly.

Bridge does not work for wireless clients - connecting to existing network.

Hi - I really hope somebody can help out here, after hours of trial & error, I have finally given up
I need to connect my Airport Extreme Base Station to my existing network. I have a linksys router (192.168.15.1) connected to my modem and this linksys router acts as DHCP server too.
I suppose I have to use "bridge mode" for that to work. But should the linksys be connected to the AEBS using the AEBS's WAN or LAN port?
If I use "bridge mode", then wired computers to the AEBS works fine - getting an IP from the linksys etc. BUT, the wireless clients will have a self-assigned IP and not get through to the internet. It's like the AEBS will not allow wireless clients to "get through" unless AEBS itself is handing out IP addresses.
Page 36 of this manual ( http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf ) shows the setup I want. But in the picture, it says "Ethernet WAN port" but the text says: "The Apple wireless device (in this example, a Time Capsule) uses your Ethernet network to communicate with the Internet through the Ethernet LAN port ( <--> )." I don't know which one to use, WAN or LAN - they show WAN but say LAN?
When I set it up as "share an IP address", the AEBS status tells me "double nat" and to change from "shared IP" to "bridge mode". I do that, and everything seems fine - for the wired clients. Now the wireless clients cannot connect, Airport on the MacBook Pro just say "Connection failed" and the MacBook says "Invalid password" (translated from danish), even though I set the Airport Utlity to save the password in keyring, so it should be correct... If I disable wireless encryption, the wireless clients will connect but get a self-assigned IP, and therefor not work (cannot get online)...
It seems the only way I can get wireless to work, is if I set AEBS up as DHCP, but then it won't be on the "same network" as the linksys (192.168.15.1), but rather on 10.0.x.x as I select. If I select 192.168.x.x within AEBS, I'm also getting some error messages, conflict/subnet thing.
Anyway - I really hope somebody knows how to get wireless clients to get an IP address from existing ethernet when connected to the AEBS.

I've given up and had to go back to running "Double NAT" which also reports as a "problem" within the AEBS, but I just "ignore" it so the light will always be green.
It still ***** though, as "Double NAT" is also a reason for "Back to my Mac" not working properly, but how the ** am I supposed to avoid Double NAT when the wireless will not work in bridged mode?!

Airport Base Station - setting up base station to already existing network

I just replaced a network switch on the network. Since I did that I am unable to get Internet connection from our main base station in the server room that distributes the IP addresses. I did a reset to the base station and tried to get it to show on the already existing network, but I'm having some issues getting the base station configured with the other base stations on the network. How do I get this main base station to show up on our network?
Right now our other base stations are not getting valid IP addresses. The base station that is setup to distribute IP addresses is getting valid addresses from our provider. If someone could give me any suggestions I would appreciate it.
We are running Apple 10.2.4 on our network.

OK - starts to make sense now. If you did a factory reset of the base station then more than likely the airport network name for it is the Apple default name, and you probably lost the WDS in Wireless Mode.
Do you know the old network name and the network password? Do you know how the other 4 or 5 base stations were configured - ie as a WDS network and whether as relay or remote base stations. You should not need to change anything on these base stations if you know how your AEB (main) was setup in the first place.
One step back from this, you need to confirm that the DSL modem is connecting to your ISP. Connect the ethernet cable from the DSL modem to your Mac and confirm that you can log onto your ISP or internet. If it works then lets go onto the AEB you reset.
Apple publish setup manuals for their AirPort Base Stations - they can be downloaded at: http://support.apple.com/manuals/#airport
1. Reset your AEB to its factory default again.
2. Turn-off the AEB and connect one of its ethernet ports to your Mac by ethernet cable, and connect the DSL modem to the WAN port on the AEB by ethernet cable.
3. Power up your Mac, the DSL modem and the AEB and wait for all to complete their startup sequence. Then open AirPort Utility - you should see your AEB under a generic network name. Click on the AEB.
4. Use the auto setup procedure by clicking 'Continue'. Follow the onscreen instructions for setting up a new network. When asked, use the 'original network name' for your school network. When asked for a network password, use the 'original network password' for your school network (what sort of network security were you using - WPA2 Personal - use whatever you had previously.
5. At some stage you will also be asked to give the AEB a name and admin password - use whatever they were previously.
6. When the setup procedure is complete and the AEB finishes restarting, the AEB will reappear in AirPort Utility. Click on the AEB and click 'Manual Setup'. You may be asked for the admin password to get into the configuration profile.
7. Click on the 'Wireless' tab and set the 'Wireless Mode:' to 'Participate in a WDS network' if not already set to this. While in this pane, look at 'Channel:' - do you remember what this was set to previously (if not, you may need to connect one of the other AEBs by ethernet cable to a Mac and use AirPort Utility to check the Channel setting.
8. Now, click on the 'Internet' icon at the top of AirPort Utility. Check that 'Connection Sharing:' is set to 'Off (Bridge Mode)' - if not, change it.
9. Now, click 'Update' and wait for the AEB to restart.
10. Now, disconnect the ethernet cable from the Mac to the AEB ethernet port.
11. Open Airport Utility, and hopefully, you can now see the AEB and the other 4 or 5 base stations.
Let us know what happens.
