Case noises?

I have a 6 month old iMac G5 17" and up until recently I've had no problems with. But just over the last week if I use it for more that a few hours I start hearing a "cracking" noise from the casing? Is this a heat issue? My fans hardly come on and according to mini CPU heat widget it's only about 59-60 degrees.
The cracking noise starts and then randomly keeps occurring from there on. Feeling case it's not hot, just warm.
Is this an known thing about the iMacs?

I've had mine for nearly a year now and it does it pretty frequently, but I must admit that it doesn't really bother me at all. If you gently squeeze your iMac it'll make the same sort of sound - I guess it's just down to expansion and contraction of the case as it warms and cools. Unless there are signs of real cracks I wouldn't worry about it - it's just another feature. A bit like the whining fans - which again don't ever bother me unless I'm doing something that's very memory intensive or am ripping a CD into iTunes.

  • Flex 3 Issues - case noise, heat, fan

Just got the Flex 3 15.6" (i7, 1 TB HDD + 8 GB SSD), and I am noticing a few issues: 1) When I push down with a finger on the base underneath the hard drive area, it gives in and makes a clicking noise (the case, not the hard drive). Kind of annoying, especially since I hear it sometimes when I pick up the laptop depending on where I hold it.
    2) It runs rather hot. I feel the heat on my leg pretty quickly.
    3) The fan is often noticeable, staying on quite a bit and loud enough to hear (but not loud).

I think it is defective. You need to apply for a guarantee or to open the case and check everything. But if you do it yourself, then maybe you can lose the guarantee.

  • Computer Case Noise

My computer case is making a ton of noise.  It seems the sides are vibrating against the metal casing.  I think it's the Raptor, 10k RPM, or perhaps the DVD Player that's causing the problem.  In any event.... is anyone else having this problem?
Is there any elegant solution to solving it other than taking a sledehammer to the case?
I found an Acoustic Absorption Mat at Cooler Guys but I don't think this will solve the problem unless I cut up the mat into smaller pieces, and put it between the metal frame and the case.  Not too sure if that's a good idea.
The noise is really, really, really....  really annoying.

    Hey Jon!
That was supposed to be my next project with my 180, just haven't found the time to actually get down to it. I'm therefore curious as to which fan you replaced the original with? I don't actually know it for a fact, but I suspect that the 865 and the 180 are sporting the same kind of PSU.
I took my PSU out of the case to get a closer look at the fan (and some pics), and at least in the 180 it's a 80mm Yate Loon Electronics: D80BH-12. Shouldn't be hard to find a quieter fan!
As for the swap/installation, any problems or hints you'd care to share?
    Cheers!

  • Case noise?

Re: a Rev B. (ALS) iMac G5 20" w/ 2 gigs ram. -- anyone hear their case expanding and contracting while using the iMac. Pops and crackle sounds. Not crazy loud but definately audible. It drives me nuts. It mostly appears to be coming in the hard drive area (I think). My operating temps are totally normal. Bizarre.

    Hello,
With the revision A and B iMac G5 systems, this was a very common complaint (at least it was frequently discussed during the first year or so).
    Mine did that as well.
It would pop as it got hotter, and pop again as it cooled down. It was just the sound of plastic expanding and contracting at different rates.
Basically, as one piece heats-up and expands, it will push past or slip past another piece right next to it. An example would be the main case pressing against or slipping slightly past the back panel.
This is normal for these machines. So, I wouldn't worry about it.
    I hope this helps.

  • Noise Ninja crashes my PS CS6 (64 bit PC)

Noise Ninja crashes my PS CS6. What'e even worse is PS CS6 can NOT be restarted without restarting the computer first! As the noise filter in PS CS6 works really poorly, does anybody have a suggestion for software that works? I use the 64 bit version. No other problems - so far.

    steve963 wrote:
Way faster than NoiseNinja? What is way faster than 1 second? In any case, noise reduction in PS CS6 still sucks - BUT, in ACR it works VERY well. The secret is to KEEP your raw files.
Steve I was talking about ACR, which is why it is faster, because it saves an operation.  It is also a while since I used Noise Ninja because I have Topaz deNoise as part of their Bundle package, and while it is OK, it takes several seconds to do it's thing.
But if I was batching a large job, I would use Bridge and ACR, and sync as many images as I could reasonably get away with for the sake of speed.  I just can't get on with Lightroom.
I can't imagine why anyone would delete their RAW files after processing them.  Several people, including Noel IIRC, have spoken about going back to old RAW files with ACR7, and getting noticably more out of them.
I know HDDs are still at a premium, but they are still afordable.  I have 10Tb over 11 drives. That includes four WD USB3 My Book externals, but they are very nearly as fast as my (non raid) internals, and perfectly usable.

  • Satellite L670-1JN - Fan activity and temperature

    Hello,
When my Satellite L670-1JN is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) with an ambiant temp 20C at wich temperaure approximately must be the processor?
At which temperature fan start and stop?
Power mode selected is normal with optimization of performance, with the power adapter.
    Thanks

Yes fan activity is control automatically but when my laptop is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) fan stop(30s) cpu temp increase from 36% to 40% and fan run(30s at 55%) temp decrease from 40% to 36%.
For this I used Health Monitor delivered with PC. Temps ig given in % so i can't know temperature in C.
Is it normal? ambiant temp is 20C.
    It's noisy.
I will prefer to have fan continuously on at lower speed.
Is it possible to change setting of fan and temperature except by changing the cooling method in Windows Power Management to battery optimized.
In this case noise increase fan stop(60s) cpu temp increase from 32% to 40% and fan run(60s at 90%) temp decrease from 40% to 32%.
My PC is newer I have not yet install other application so only OS is running.

  • Since Yosemite upgrade, high pitch noise creating case vibration on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) (on watching the keynote online)

    Hi,
Great work on Yosemite, great new design as well.
Several problems since the Yosemite upgrade though :
        - When playing high pitch noise (watching the keynote for example), the speakers make the case around it vibrate. This was not happening under Mavericks and previous OSXs.
        - This page (post editing) does not allow the right click (works everywhere else as far as I'm aware).
        - when changing the volume, I have now the noise feedback when clicking on shift+volume up/down and no sound when clicking on volume up/down on my keyboard (was the inverse before).
        - The keyboard light was stuck in off, had to restart the computer.
More general problems (covering the last OSX since introduction of 10.9) :
        - lack of possibility of choosing for a 3x3 set of desktops as it was before (the new mission control only allow us to have a horizontal set of several desktops)
        - Notifications cannot be turned off automatically when being in full screen. (only options for auto turn off given are "display is sleeping" oO and when "mirroring on another display" -> meh, would have prefer when having an app in full screen)
    System :
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,3
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Memory: 8 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.48f2

Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.

  • Macbook pro 13in back case clicking noise when flexed? (late 2013)

Yesterday I noticed that when I put a moderate (but by no means excessive) amount of pressure on the back of the case in certain areas with my thumb, there is a very audible clicking noise produced when the pressure is released. You can also feel resistance or a change in flex which to me, feels as though the case comes in contact with something on the inside of the computer, although I really can't be sure. It feels almost sticky when the pressure is released and the sound happens. What I'm wondering is, has anyone else experienced this, and if so was anything actually wrong, did it lead to issues etc. or is it just how the case sits. I looked at a display model of 13in late 2013 retina and it did not have this sound or feeling that I could tell (but still had similar flex). The 15 in late 2013 was much sturdier than the display 13 in retina and the old 13in without the retina screen felt like a solid piece of metal in comparison to my laptop. Here's a picture of the areas I can hear the sound when pressed
It's not really the flex I'm concerned with, I am aware that flex happens when you have thin pieces of aluminum. This weird feeling and sound just don't seem normal to me. Please if you have a late 2013 13in retina, let me know if you hear or feel anything when you press here!

    Hi f,
I know you're looking for someone with the same model MBP as you have; sorry, I don't have one, but I'd like to point out a couple of things.
You already know that not all of them make that noise, as you've tested a display model. Because of that, I would definitely bring my MBP into an Apple Store and have them look at it. If you're still within 14 days of purchase, you may even want to consider a return and get a new one.
Another point: if there is something amiss with your MBP, continuing to make it "click" could be causing harm, and I would stop doing it immediately, tempting as it may be. ;-)
If the clicking is caused by picking up your MBP with one hand, use two hands to pick it up. As you've noticed, the case is rather "flexy;" this flex, exacerbated by picking it up with one hand, has caused internal hardware problems with MBPs and PBs in the past. If memory serves me, they used to put it in the owners manual; if they don't anymore, I think they should. Two hands.

  • Noise when pressing on bottom of MBA case

I just received my 13in MBA today and I was holding the laptop with two hands. I set the left side of the laptop down first then the right side. When I let go of the right side, I heard a pop/clicking noise from the case. After playing around with it for a bit I found a 2x2in section of the laptop that when pressure is applied then release, it's almost sounds like something is clicking or popping. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and/or what have you done. I want to make sure nothing is loose or broken. The picture below is the area where I hear this noise.

Sorry, I completely forgot to reply with my experience.
When I got to the Genius Bar, I explained the situation to the Genius and that I thought that perhaps reseating the bottom case would solve the creaking (I would have done this at home if it weren't for the new screws). When that didn't help, he offered to send it away to get the top case replaced, a solution that we both agreed was a little extreme given that, at this time, my complaint was an aesthetic issue (albeit one that could indicate further issues down the line).
In the end, he opened a case file on my account authorizing me for a top case replacement if I decided I wanted the procedure done in the future (which I may or may not take advantage of).
It's been a week since I was at the Genius Bar; in that time, the creaking has actually decreased dramatically. It still does creak occasionally, but no longer under normal use, and no longer when I put my hand on the palm rest.
My recommendation? I'd try living with it for a little while and seeing if it goes away. After all, you do have AppleCare for almost an entire year at this point.

Creeking Noise: When I press lightly on the center left side of my screen I hear I slight creeking noise it occurs with case off as well.  I believe it is coming from the screen.

No one here can say for sure what Apple will do. You need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar to have the device looked at, and Apple makes the final determination. If they find a problem with the device, they can replace it.

  • Creaking noise coming from bottom case.

I just got a new macbook pro as a replacement for a lemon about a week ago. Everything seems to be working fine. There is one thing that is worrying me though. When im laying down and have my macbook on my chest I can hear it make creaking noises. At first I thought it was no big deal but its starting to annoy me. I put the bottom of the macbook up to my ear to see what the noise was and it sounds like the bottom case flexes and produces the creaking sound. Is this normal? I am trying to avoid any repairs on this macbook for this issue since I have had bad experiences with repairs in the past. Can anyone confirm if this is normal?

' Hey guys (and any gals)!
' I'm using the 17-inch unibody which doesn't have the removable panels etc. that some of you might - so I'm honestly not entirely sure how relevant this is - but I thought sharing this with you might prove useful or interesting anyways...
' AFAIK the story about the fans is a load of bull! The only fans in the Unibody system are right up almost against the screen's hinge and they aren't resting against or too near the casing.
' Even without the panels you have, my system occasionally creaks a little - generally when I have it sitting on a very uneven surface that itself moves and shifts where it's applying pressure to the bottom of the case. From my perspective, and on my machine, it would appear to be nothing other than a little "give-and-take" of the casing (i.e. the metal) itself. It's slight, infrequent, and seems perfectly natural and normal (to be expected) to me.
' Again - this may NOT be what you may be experiencing - I don't know. But maybe this info / perspective / experience helps...

  • Speck case causes loud fan noise?

I have a speck case for my macbook pro and I couldn't help but notice that the fan makes a loud noise after using my laptop for long periods of time. The other day I removed the case and noticed that the fan no longer made noise. Does this mean that the case is bad for ventilation? Should I keep it removed?

Does this mean that the case is bad for ventilation? Should I keep it removed?
Yes and yes. The effect depends on the variant of the MacBook Pro you have. Pre-Uni-Body (2006 to Early 2008) used the bottom of the case as a heat sink. When I had my 2012 Uni-Body 13-inch MBP open to add RAM, it did not apper it was as reliant on the case bottom for cooling as the pre-UniBody models.
It looks like coolng air in drawn in through the keyboard, so anything over the keys could reduce airflow.
All MBPs exhaust the heated air from the hinge area in the rear edge, so it is critical to keep that area clear.

  • Hard case makes clicking Noises

    Hello
Can anyone possibly help me out with this so I don't have to mail my MBP out or drive 2 hours to the nearest apple store?
My hard case at the top left corner, by the power source, makes a clicking noise when I shift it on my lap. It's not the hard drive, since it makes this noise even when the computer is off. It sounds like something is catching inside and getting loose, causing the "clicking" noise. Has anyone else had any problems with this?
    Thanks

I have a similar issue with my MBP (mid 2010), but the location is at the right palm rest area. Mine has been diagnosed as a defective bottom case and possibly top case too, waiting for the new parts to arrive. In my case, in order for them to actually replace the part, I had to take it to the store 3 times to prove their minor adjustment fix doesn't fix it.
    Hope it helps.
