Case not coming in group by clause

Hi
I have created the following query:
select sum(receipt) , sum(LINE_NO) , case
when sum(receipt) = sum(LINE_NO) then 'F' else 'G' end from test_function;
It is working fine but i have a doubt as the case is returning some character value then why it is not included in thr group by clause.
Do case part does not come in group by if case involves some aggregates?
Pls suggest

    The cachedwithin and cachedafter functions store the query
    results in the server's RAM. That means, while it's cached,
    whenever you run it, you get the cached result instead of going to
    the database to run it again. This increases speed of course, but
    if the data changes during the cache period, you have accuracy
    problems.
    It does not create memory issues. In the administrator you
    reserve a certain amount of memory for query caching. If you exceed
    that amount, the last query in pushes the first query out, or
    something like that.
    With regards to what you are trying to do about binding
    variables in your group by clause, that's not what cfqueryparam was
    designed for. It was designed for
    where clauses (where this = <cfqueryparam etc>
    or insert queries (insert into my table (field) values
    (<cfqueryparam>
    and things like that.
    You are trying to use it for something other than what it was
    designed for, which explains why it's not working for you.

  • Custom IKM Knowledge Modules are not working with Group By Clause

    Hi All,
       I am facing an issue with custom IKM knowledge modules. Those are IKM Sql Incremental Update and IKM Sql Control Append.
    My Scenario is
    1. Created an interface with table on source and temporary datastore with some columns in target.
    2. In the Interface on the target i defined one column as UD1 and other column as UD2  for which group by to be implemented .
    3. Customized  IKM Sql Incremental Update  with " Group by " by making  modification in my IKM Sql Incremental Update
    detail step "Insert flow into I$ table"  i.e., i replaced like this whereever i find this <%=odiRef.getGrpBy()%> API
    Group By
    <%=snpRef.getColList("","[EXPRESSION]","","","UD1")%>,
    <%=snpRef.getColList("","[EXPRESSION]","","","UD2")%>
    Up to UD5.
    . Here in the place of [EXPRESSION] i passed column names for UD1 similarly other column name for [EXPRESSION] of UD2.
    4.Made all the proper mappings and also selected the KM's needed for that interface like CKM Sql ,IKM Sql Incremental Update.
    5. Executed the Interface with global context.
    Error i am getting in this case is :

    If your are transfering data from Oracle to Oracle (I means source is oracle Db and target is also oracle DB) then use below KM's and group by will come automatically based on the key values you selected on interface target datastore
    1) CKM Oracle
    2) LKM Oracle to Oracle (DBLINK)
    3) IKM Oracle Incremental Update (MERGE)

    Easiest fix for you would be to change the detection_strategy on the IKM from NOT_EXISTS to either :
    MINUS
    -- Try this out, it should work, it will give the same data through the equiverlant steps.
    NONE
    -- This will load all incoming data into your I$ table, there will be more rows to crunch in the following 'Flag Rows for Update' step, it might give incorrect results potentially - you will have to test it.
    So try MINUS first, failing that, see if NONE gives you what you want in your target.
    Are you inserting only new data or updating existing data?

  • How to include case stmt in group by clause

    Hi i have a question,
    How do i include a case statement in the group by clause?
    For example:
    Select
    (case when x.ctry is null then y.ctry else x.ctry end) as coo,
    sum (x.in_amt)
    from
    tbl1 x,
    tbl2 y
    where
    x.id = y.id
    group by
    (case when x.ctry is null then y.ctry else x.ctry end)
    Assume, I have got millions of records in both the tables, then my guess is, the above query might take huge time to complete.
    Any alternate method to do this?

  • Conditional GROUP BY clause

    Hi,
    I have four columns in group by clause. I want to add conditional group by clause.
    Case 1 : If one of the  column's value is null, I don't want to include it in group by clause. Means, Now GROUP BY clause will have only 3 columns.
    Case 2 : If not null, then GROUP BY clause with all four columns.
    Please help me out on this.

    I think it won't matter, all group functions by default ignore NULLs so your result won't differ.

  • Select not working with Case unless adding field to group by clause

    Hi, I have a simple query that I am trying to run.  The first version runs, but I am trying to get the second version to run, because I do not want to have to include PAYRCORD in the Group By.  Since I do not want it grouped by PAYRCORD.
    Is there a way to write the second version to work?

    Put the CASE inside the SUM.
    I also cleaned up your query by removing an excess of prefixes, making the code difficult to read, and I replaced HAVING with WHERE. (You use HAVING WHEN you need to filter on an aggregate value, for instance HAVING COUNT(*) > 2.) Finally, I removed the
    DISTINCT from the SUM, because that looked, well, funny.

  • Why is the GROUP BY clause not working in my Query?

    Dear All,
    Below is the Query for a Summary Debtors Aged Analysis.
    The GROUP BY clause does not seem to be working.
    The Query returns all the unpaid invoices, instead of a single total row for each Customer.
    If a Customer X has 10 unpaid invoices, 10 rows are displayed - one for each invoice.
    I was expecting only 1 row for Customer X, 1 for Customer Y, etc.
    This is what GROUP BY is supposed to do, but it is not doing its work.
    What has gone wrong?

    Once I understand the problem, I can adapt your query to suit my requirements
    So, let's start with a clean slate:
    The Query you have posted is for a DETAILED Debtors Aging Report.
    This lists all outstanding invoices, and ages them in the Age Brackets.
    What I want is a SUMMARY Debtors Aging Report.
    This will give the total amount owed by each Customer, and this amount is broken down in the Age Bracket Columns
    There will be a single row listed for each customer, something like this:
    Customer     Total Due     Current      1 Mth          2 Mth         3 Mth  etc
    Alfred       500,000       300,000       200,000
    Charles      800,000                     100,000       300,000       400,000
    How can you modify your query to make it become a Summary Report (1 line for each customer even if he has many invoices)?

  • Columns not to be included in group by clause

    I have a select query where i need to display count of records group by state_name
    In my main select query i need to include two more columns which are not be included in group by clause so that the number of records displayed does not increase
    I need to pass all these values from front end application so that i get count of records only by statename
    But when i include these two columns in my select query my query is throwing an error bcoz i have not included them in my group by
    How can we prevent this by not adding it to group by clause

    One general approach is (using the emp dept example)
    I want
    deptno dname, count(distinct empno)
    I can do that
    select d.deptno, d.dname, count(distinct e.empno)
    from dept d, emp e
    where e.deptno=d.deptno
    group by d.deptno, d.dname;
    or
    select d.deptno, d.dname, count_emp
    from dept d,
    (select e.deptno, count(distinct empno)
    from emp e
    group by e.deptno
    where d.deptno = e.deptno
    or depending on version (you don't mention versionk, though most questions have version dependent answers)
    select deptno
    , dname
    , (select count(distinct empno) from emp e where e.deptno=d.deptno)
    from dept d
    Obviously you can also use the FIRST and the LAST function to avoid having to include a column in the GROUP BY clause.

  • Group By clause is not working

    I have two columns Department and EmpName:
    Department EmpName
    Sales empname1
    Sales empname2
    Marketing empname3
    Development empname4
    Now I want to count the number of employees in every department..

    I am retrieving names of the department through a subquery
    The query I am trying to execute is:

    WHERE (A.EmpID = B.EmpID AND A.EmpCategory like 'Category2')
    GROUP BY Department
    I know that you cannot group by using aliases and hence a little work around, but still the query isn't working...I appreciate any help!!!!

    I know that you cannot group by usingalias name and hence a little work around, You can assign the alias in a sub-query, then use the alias in the GROUP BY clause, or anywhere else you want to, in a super-query.

  • Output not sorted when using group by clause

    Recently we migrated our application from Forms5 to Forms10g and database from 7.3.2 to 10gR2.
    More than 400 applications using sql stmt with "group by" clause and without "order by".
    In Earlier version of oracle 7.3.2 "group by" clause in SQL stmt sorts the output by order of the column in the "group by"
    stmt, where new version of oracle 10g (10.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production) doesnt behave like older version.
    eg select div_cd,dept_cd,count(*) from class group by div_cd,dept_cd
    Output of the above query in Oracle7
    DIV_CD DEPT_CD COUNT(*)
    0 1     120
    0 9 131
    1 4 938
    1 6 1
    4 1 1490

    a) Does the oracle behave in that manner?.
    b) if so, Any patch set available for this?
    c) if no patch set how to resolve this issue.
    if i use "order by" clause
    along with group by then i can get the output how i want.
    BUt problem is more than 400 applications (forms) using above method.
    Identify Forms/Reports and rectifing is a tedious job.

    Group By does not, and never has guaranteed order. Just because it happened that way on the past does not mean it will continue to do so.
    In the past, the algorithm used for Group By invoked a sort. It was convenient for the system to simply dump the output in that resulting order. These days, Group By could also be accomplished using a hash algorithm. Walking through the hash can easily result in a completely different ordering, as you have seen.
    Your problem is that the assumptions made previously are now invalid. Oracle is still working correctly. No patch, but you might be able to work around it by crippling your database and using the COMPATIBLE parameter (although the official lower limit is 9.2.0)

    Since, col_X and col_Y are not in GROUP BY clause, it throws error. Also, decode/count of the columns makes it more complex.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Whenever you have a problem, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statments, relevant columns only) for all tables involved, and the results you want from that data.
    Always say which versionof Oracle you're using.
    How to do what youy want depends on what you want, which is unclear.
    If you say "GROUP BY a, b, c", that means you only want one row of output for each distinct combination of a, b and c. How do x and y fit into that? Do you want a separate output row for each distinct combination of a, b,c, x and y? Then add x and y to the GROUP BY clause. If you don't want separate rows for each combinataion of x and y, what do you want when a group has more than 1 value for either of them?
    You can simplify the code a little by doing the DECODE in a sub-query; then you can use the alias col_ct as many times as you like in the main query. That will make the code easier to maintain, too.

  • IDOC not coming in status 30 for collecting idocs

    Hi All,
    We have a requirement in which we need to collect idocs and send together.
    To achieve I am making Collect idocs in Partner profiles so that it goes in status 30 and hence I can run program RSEOUT00 to make it status 03 and hence write in file as a group of idocs.
    Now inspite of making collect idocs in partner profile, its not coming in status 30 but directly coming in status 03.
    Please let me know what may be the reason for the same.

    Hi vivek,
    If you have set the Collect Idoc option in partner profile then the IDOC's will be collected , irrespective of kind of port you are using and the packet size doesn't matter in this case.
    It seems to me that the program RSEOUT00 is already scheduled in your system.
    Can you check in SM37 , by putting the program RSEOUT00 and check if any user has scheduled the program.

  • Oracle 10g group by clause

    I have one SQL query using a GROUP BY clause and no ORDER BY clause is used. When executed in Oracle 8i, the query results are returned ordered by first column mentioned in the GROUP BY clause. When the same query is executed in Oracle 10g, the query results are returned withour ordering the data by the first column in the GROUP BY clause. It works only when I explicitly mention the ORDER BY clause. Can you please explain this? In Orcale 8i, is it that, by default, the data is ordered by the first column mentioned in the GROUP BY clause when ORDER BY clause is not mentioned?
