Case of the missing Safari preference icons...

A couple weeks ago, I attempted to download an extension for Safari (unfortunately, I can't remember the name), and there wasn't any indiciation that it was being downloaded.  Upon quitting Safari immediately afterward, when I opened up Safari's preference window, I noticed that some of the preference icons were missing.
Would anyone happen to have an idea as to how to restore these icons?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • S.O.S. - The case of the missing TIme Capsule icon

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to a local network.
Our Macbook Air, iPad and three iPhones all have WiFi. No problem.
My Macbook Pro has solid black radiating bars in the main menu. In Airport Utility, it shows the "Internet Globe" with a green circle below. Below that, however all I get is a spinning wheel. At the same time, the Macbook Air shows the icon of the time capsule with a green circle below.
Is there a setting I am missing? Some said to turn off Mac Access, but I do not know where to do that. In System Preferences, Wi-Fi is green, and it says WiFi is connected.
I ran all of the maintenance (rebuilt Directory, optimized the drive, weekly/monthly scripts, etc) All of the hardware checks out.
Has anyone had this happen? Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Paul Kirtley

This is typical Yosemite.. please confirm OS on Pro and Air.. Yosemite,  has the network ability of a pair of tin cans with wet string. (that dried and snapped).
The odd thing of course is the MBP is on the internet.. but perhaps just too stupid to figure out the local network.
So here is the first few things to try.
    1. Factory reset the TC.. sounds odd when it is working already .. but please do the setup with the computer that is having the most trouble.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    2. After a reset it should suddenly show up as new device.. please run the setup utility from the pro.
Use short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgenx and TCwifi. Base station and wireless names respectively.
    3. Use WPA2 Personal security only. Use pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers password.
    4. If you have issues plug in by ethernet.
    5. Set ipv6 in network preference for wireless and if used, ethernet. to link-local only.
Tell me how this goes.. if it works in the pro you can then pick it up in the Air etc.

  • How to recover the "GMail" Safari extension icon?

I seem to have lost the "GMail" Safari extension icon. This is the one with the plain "envelope" outline (NOT the "GMail Counter" one). It originally appeared as a selection in the Safari/View/Customize Toolbar window, but is now gone. And that particular extension does not appear in the "Safari/Safari Extensions..." option.
I thought I recalled that there is a way to delete Safari and then restart OSX to have it reinstalled, but I can't accomplish that it seems.
All advice appreciated for how to recover that "GMail" Safari extension.
    TIA

    UPDATE.
I found that Extension on my iMac running Lion. (Library/Safari/Extensions). Sent as an attachment to an email to myself and copied it to that location on my MBP.
    Problem solved.
Suggestion: Do NOT "Uninstall" Safari extensions from the Toolbar. Just do Safari/View/Customize Toolbar and simply Move the unwanted extension back to the Customize window.

  • The Strange Case of the Missing Network Icon

Can anyone help my buddy Tom - who is running a G4 iBook with OS X Panther? He is unable to get onto his wireless network and here is the problem in his own words:
"Had a moment to muck about in the iBook drive, following data crumbs from the all-pervasive Network software. Apparently, all that spinning of the drive over regions containing bits and bytes of the application managed to cobble together enough of Network to launch an e-mail, which I immediately determined had to go to you. This is strictly a spit-and-string enterprise, similar to a baling wire and soup can exhaust system fix, and likely the only e-mail I'll get off until I complete an entire system restore. Think of it as a faulty telephone connection - you can hear me, but I can't hear you. So, don't bother to respond, as your e-mail will probably languish in my Inbox for the time it takes me to resurrect OS X.
What brought me to this point is my reasoning Network isn't a stand-alone application like a word processor, but rather a "network" (clever, eh?) piece of software with files strewn through other software so they can access various aspects of it. For example, World Book Encyclopedia accomplishes a software update without launching Safari; connecting to its mother ship via but another piece of Network that happens to reside within the program. I guess this approach is what put the "i" in iBook, and it seems to work pretty well...until moments like this. Perhaps Steve Jobs outsourced to Hansel and Gretel to create a new marketing twist.
Anyway, I've talked this all up with a number of people, and the universal response seems to be; "Huh? I've never heard such a thing.". I even managed to mightily confuse Dave and he's got an awful lot of Mac expertise. But the real kicker, when explaining how I reasoned it all out, is when I mention the key to my understanding was when I noticed the missing Network icon. That's when their eyes glaze over and it's apparent they can't quite wrap their brain around the idea. I've deduced how to cajole the Finder to reveal this Archimedean moment, and included a pair of attachments so you, too, can share in my AHA!! revelation. Running this all past Dave had him agreeing I seem to have a handle on it, but the sheer complexity of all those .exec files squirreled here, there, and everywhere still had him scratching his head.
Interestingly, I have to coerce the Finder to display the icon example; you can't simply click it into existence. I do it by plugging in a travel drive, opening same, then ejecting it. The Finder then defaults to what you see (the word Network with no icon).
Speaking of attachments, I was so tempted to wade through all 70 (70!!) e-mails in my inbox, but was fearful my MacGyvered patch would fail before getting this off to you.
Time to fade back into the black hole from whence I came. When I close Safari it'll relinquish its tenuous grasp on the Network .exec file it's hacked to."
Any ideas on what's wrong and how it can be fixed? I'll see that they get passed on to Tom.
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   iMac

Before the mid-1980s, networking might have been implemented with a lot of goofy little routines (.exec's if you must) calling one another. About that time the CCITT (an international telecommunications standards committee made up of Academic and Industrial representatives) did a lot of work abstracting and then standardizing the functions that various parts of a network perform.
The CCITT refined the notion of a Layered Network Architecture and specified the types of activities performed in each layer. Shortly thereafter Apple implemented Open Transport and delivered it into the marketplace in System 7.5.3.
Apple networking has been very well-behaved and under control since then. It does not tend to "get lost" or "lose track of things". It really is very good. With only a few limitations, you can connect Macs running 7.5.3 through 10.3.9 and have File Sharing work without regard to what versions are talking to each other.

  • Missing System Preference Icon

One of my System Preferences icons seems to be missing... I have been trying to disable DVD player from automatically launching when I insert a DVD, and the "CDs &DVDs" icon is missing in the System Preferences.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    MacBook 1.83GHz Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Nick
    Hmmmm.
When you say it is missing... In Sys Pref. in the second row called hardware there are normally 6 icons with the CD-DVD one being the first on the far left position. Is that space now empty?
If is not empty and you click on the space where it should be, what happens?
I'm running out of ideas. So... one more time with one extra deletion.
    With Sys Pref closed
    trash
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    as well as
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systempreferences
then log out and then back in
then click on Sys Pref. to see if CD-DVD is back where it should be.

  • The Strange Case of the Missing Shared Devices...

    Dear Forum,
I am currently having intermittent trouble with the connection of shared devices.
The network consists of a MBP, Qnap TS109 and a Canon printer hooked up via LAN to a WAG200G. The Qnap serves music to a PS3 (WLAN) and the Mac and also serves as a TimeMachine back up device.
The problem is that every so often I lose my Shared Devices in the Finder side-bar. They just disappear.
I have managed to reconnect by playing with the Network connections preferences, but as I suspected (due to exhausting the permutations), this solution has come to an end and now I cannot urge them to reappear (unless I restart (which is a solution, but not an entirely satisfactory one)…
All devices have been set to use static IP address (none conflict).
The Mac’s settings are as follows:
    TCP/IP-
Configure IPv4 Manually: then my IP address.
Subnet and router are both correct as I can connect to the Qnap & WAG admin pages and internet (I’m not sure if that is a correct test of these settings, but the numbers are correct).
    Configure IPv6: Off.
Under DNS : I have entered both DNS servers as per the instructions of the ISP (I have been with them for years and these are correct).
WINS- (I don’t know what this is but…)
NETBIOS Name: the name of my Mac (All uppercase (don’t know why, but looks definitely windows (ish))
    Workgroup: (blank)
    WINS Servers (blank),
802.1X & Proxies: everything is per the default setting as I have never touched anything in these options.
    Ethernet-
    ID: My Mac MAC
    Configure: Auto
Speed, Duplex and MTU have never been touched, but I am assuming that Auto covers these.
Under Network (System Preferences), then Location: Auto, then next to Status: Connected (currently active and correct IP)
The WAG is the only thing on this mini network that sets DHCP, I could change this to disable as everything has it’s own Static IP, but is there any need?
(I hope I am getting the terminology correct and not inadvertently creating confusion.)
The PS3 sees the Twonky server in the Qnap, so I am not sure if that is an issue, it doesn’t appear to be.
    So why the missing devices?
None of this would actually be a problem if it was not for the fact that once the Qnap disappears from the Finder side-bar, TimeMachine does not back up (yet I can connect via a browser to the Qnap, even if it is not present in the side-bar).
The problem is I feel as though my thinking is a bit blinkered as I am only concentrating on the Network connection aspect, yet I am afraid I am not entirely sure what else I should be considering. That is to say what is causing the Mac hooked up to a perfectly adequate connection/ functioning network to suddenly cause it to drop the devices, yet retain connection by other means?
Unfortunately a forum member had exactly the same problem but sadly removed the query from open questions.
It goes without saying (but there is no harm in me saying it anyway), but any help would be appreciated.

    Bump
This recently happened to me as well, actually it's happened for awhile, and only recently have begun to try to find the answers. Did you ever find out what happened?
Also seems like this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11367180
But that has no answers posted either. Perhaps a reformat and stick with 10.6.2, which is what I think the last version the "Shared Devices" automatically showed without deliberately mounting a network drive.
My situation is pretty much the same, "Shared Devices" do not automatically show up on the left sidebar. If I know the IP address or netbios name, I can mount network hard drives: Command + K and smb://ipaddress
My Computers, I have an iBook G4, which used to automatically pop up; a Windows7 computer that used to automatically show; and an Ubuntu 10.04 computer that would show up as well for screen sharing and smb.
Possible culprits include: netbios/smb problems, mDNSresponder/Bonjour problems, other networking config. No settings permutations have fixed the problem.

  • The Case of the Missing Image

    Go to this link:
    http://fyiboerne.info/wcid.html
This page is a very simple HTML page which displays two
things: a "< GO BACK" link, which is visible and working
properly, and one jpg image (file name: wcid#2.jpg) which is not
    visible.
I would love to know what is going on here.
Both the html page, and the lone image are in place on the
remote server; however, when I test the page on my testing server
it comes up blank as it does from the browser when online. I've
tried pop-up windows, a download to a pdf version of the .jpg....IT
IS ALWAYS BLANK. Moreover, I have purged the entire site and put it
back...dumped the html file and completely rebuilt it...tried
opening the pdf file and jpg file in Photoshop and Acrobat, where
the image always comes up. In Photoshop, I flattened the layers.
The image shows up in Dreamweaver, but fails to appear in a
preview (using Firefox and Safari), and fails to appear on the
    Internet.
I included the source code for this link in the event anyone
can see a problem. The first source code appears on the page which
links to the page in question. The second source code is the code
from the page with the missing image.

Removing the "#" character from the file name fixed the
    problem. Thanks!

  • Missing Safari Download Icon

    Missing Safari Download Icon

For some weird reason, Apple seems to make it hard to download safari (using Chrome on Windows OS currently).  There's no real logical path you can use to download Safari right now:
    Support, Other Products? Software?  NOT
Support, Other Products? Support Resources? Downloads & Updates? Internet: YES, but 5 clicks after the homescreen for a major Apple product?  Really??
Wouldn't make it sense to have a Downloads button on the home screen (is software not as much, or even more a product than hardware?) or at least a button/choice option under Support?

  • Case of the missing 15GB...

    Hi,
I have a really strange problem with some missing Hard Disk space.
I installed boot camp and had a 15GB Windows partition working fine. It all went a bit wrong when I tried to remove the partition.
I used the boot camp assistant to remove the partition and recover the space but when I rebooted as requested, I got the folder with the flashing question mark boot error.
It refused to boot at all so I did an archive and install, which worked perfectly except that the 15GB from the boot camp partition is now inaccessible!
If I 'get info' on the OS X volume in the finder, it shows 96GB capacity. In Disk Utility however, both the physical drive and the OS X partition show 111GB capacity!?
I've run verify and repair on both the physical disk and the OS X volume, but still no sign of the missing 15GB.
Apple Phone support suggested that I do a complete wipe clean and re-install, re-partitioning the drive as I do. But I'm loath to go through the polava of getting my system set up a third time.
    Any suggestions?

Hi tekin, Welcome to Apple Discussions. As advised by support, an erase and install would clear up your problems. I understand your reluctance to go ahead with this, as it isn't a quick process, however, the only easier way is to use a proprietary utility e.g. Disk Warrior to repair your disk.
    Link here .. (http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/).
Or, as I have done, get a external hard drive and back up - (for next time)!
    Best wishes,
    Robert.

  • The curious case of the missing airplay icon

    Hello everyone,
last night I noticed that the airplay icon was missing on my iPad. I didn't show up in videos, music or youtube.
When I turned on my iMac I saw that the icon was also missing in iTunes. The only thing I did yesterday was to connect my iPad to my iMac to sync iTunes.
I didn't do anything else really. That's why I figured it might be a good idea to update iTunes. Everything else is pretty much up to date and works fine. Also checked my router and wifi settings and couldn't detect anything out of the ordinary. Basically did everything people advised on the web. Resetting AppleTV didn't help either.
So right now I cannot mirror anything via AppleTV because the airplay symbol is missing on my iOS device as well as on my Mac. You probably know how much that s****. Does anyone have the same issues with airplay? Can anyone help me? I would really appreciate it!
    Take care!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router.
    Restart your mobile device.

  • The case of the missing photos: Urghhh!

So I have been using iPhoto for years with little to no problem. Until Now! I have been importing my photos from my Nikon D40 (often lots) editing them and satisfied. The next time I open iPhoto all the photos are missing! No thumbnails/photos/ no photos I had trashed from the last import in the trash. Since I have sent a bunch to my girlfriend post editing by then I have her send them back and add them to iPhoto. And they are in their under "last import". The next time I open iPhoto they (the "emailed back to me" photos) are once again gone. This has happened to all photos imported since early March when it began? I have done nothing new, changed no preferences, everything is up to date, and I have rebuilt the iPhoto library twice between occurrences. This after much time spent editing children's photos too of which I cannot replace all. Please anyone......Thanks. dennis

First, do you keep your library in the default location, your User/Pictures folder? If so then try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
    Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
Fix #3 - Last Ditch Scenario
Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

  • The Case of the Missing Font

I have and use the translation Dashboard widget to, well...translate things, sometimes from English to Russian. The Russian alphabet is Cyrillic, and that font has, as recently as a month or so ago, been available for translations when I type a word in English and ask the widget to translate it into Russian. Yesterday, I attempted such a translation and the translated word was presented in some font that is definitely not Cyrillic. I don't know what the font is, but the characters for the translation of the word "school" were presented as школа.
Curious, I opened Font Book to see if Cyrillic was among the available fonts. Surprisingly, it was not. So I did a Spotlight search of the computer and found that Cyrillic is definitely there. It's in the Drive 1/Library/Fonts directory. Seems like a reasonable place. Its information preview shows that it's pretty old - created and last modified on 1/6/94, but as I said, it was working a month ago (assuming that the working font was the one that is still there). Its preview icon has the letters "FFIL" on it, and as I am not a font expert, I have no idea what that means as far as font types go.
So I figured OK, since it's there and has worked in the past, I'll go to font book and add it to the list, which I then tried to do. I selected "Add font..." chose Cyrillic, and it did not get added to the list. Nothing happened. Not knowing what to try next, I opened Safari, found Google's translator, and added it to my bookmarks.
I realize that Google Translator is probably a better overall solution to my problem than the translation widget anyway, but now my primary question is what has happened to what was a working Cyrillic font a month ago. Did some recent Software Update kill it unbeknownst to me? Am I not trying to add it to the available fonts correctly? Am I hallucinating? I expect Windows machines to do weird things, but it's very frustrating when my Mac does them too.
    Thanks for any help.
Bob Krueger, fontless in San Diego

Ah, yes. I see now that Lucida Grande contains an entire section of Cyrillic characters. Interesting; I did not know that.
What is the Systran online translator? (sorry, but curiosity demands that I ask that question) If that has indeed broken down, it must have been relatively recently, as it was making Cyrillic translations last month. The widget is, by the way, continuing to make accurate translations in languages, like English, Spanish, Italian, etc. that use the Latin alphabet. So whatever presents the Cyrillic characters is broken, but the translation function itself is not.

  • Address Book Exporting ... the Case of the Missing Spouse ... ?

… and missing children and missing birthdays, too.
I have had problems customizing address labels, which I discussed in detail in a separate message, entitled Wonky Address Labels. In fact, I gave up on using Apple Address Book and decided to export the database, put it in Excel, and do some column merging to get a one-time solution to my label-printing problem for my Christmas cards.
Yeah, sure I would … when Address Book will not export in anything other than an arcane address book file format.
So it was back to this forum, to review exporting suggestions. Two seemed to be offered and I tried ‘em both; first, Address Book Exporter at:
    gwenhiver.net/applications/addressbookexporter/index.php
and second, some special mail scripts at:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
These were both fun to use and worked pretty well, producing tab-delimited text files. But neither will do a complete export of the database; they won’t export spouse names, anniversary dates, children’s names or spouse/children’s birthdays ( which I had put in an ‘Other Date’ field ) … nor, BTW, will they export custom fields.
Well, if I can’t print custom labels with Apple Address Book and can’t export the full database, I guess hand-written Christmas card envelopes have a certain panache.
Or, I suppose I might use my 10-year old Windows software that I run on Virtual PC.
It would be nice if Apple would fix this Address Book exporting problem. Frankly, I don’t like the idea of having data in a database that I cannot export as a simple text file. In fact, if I had known I could not get my data OUT, I would not have put it IN to start with.
Any suggestions for exporting ALL the fields of the Apple Address Book database would be welcome.
    DICK

value = value;Oh, so you have one of those new compilers that reads your mind and knows which value is which in that statement, huh?
    Lucky.
The rest of us are stuck doing this.value = value;so that the compiler can distinguish the member variable from the method parameter.

  • The case of the missing desktop.

I lose my desktop background every time I reboot my iMac. So, after every reboot, I have to go to System Preferences and reload the image I use for my background.
I use two displays (the iMac display and a second display). I wonder if that is tied to my problem.
Anyone know what I can do about this?
    Thanks

Disconnect the 2nd display as a test.
    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
