Case of the Mysteriously Missing Unread Messages

Mail claims I have unread messages, but none exist. This happens with multiple servers using both POP and IMAP. I can select 'Mark all Messages as Read' from the inbox, and it will still claim there are some number (currently 7) of unread messages. I have an unread messages smart mailbox, and it is empty. Sometimes restarting mail will make them disappear, sometimes it does not.
It has been going on for months, and may be connected with the PGP plug-in.
Obviously this is not a show stopper as I still get my mail, but it is extraordinarily bothersome. I cannot at a glance tell if I need to look at mail based on the badge, so I spend time opening the app and checking manually. I am considering switching to Thunderbird...
Please help.

I have already rebuilt the mailboxes, but I'll try again.
I actually really need the PGP plug-in. I've looked on the message boards for PGP though, and I don't find any other people with the same issue so it seems unlikely it is the culprit. I mentioned it anyway because it seemed to begin around the same time I installed PGP and another ancient post here about the same problem had PGP too.
Either way, I'm going to try removing the plugin temporarily to see if it is the problem.
Thanks.

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail does not display the count of unread messages

    Hi,
I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard (on a Macbook Pro mid 2009) when Maverick went out.
Since then the count of unread messages in the Inbox is not displayed on the Dock Icon, nor in the app itself (the label Inbox does not change to bold with a count of unread messages when I do have unread messages).
I did when to see the preferences of the app to see if the move from Snow Leopard to Maverick changed anything but I could not see anything odd.
    Anyone having the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,

  • IOS7 - setting the number of unread messages in email

    Hi there,
I updated my iPad to iOS7 and I'm very impressed with it. I noticed a small issue on my email app. Whereas before, (I think) the limit of pushed messages could be set - I remember I set it to 50 - I have current number of unread messages at about 4000! I can't see whether it's possible to change it to a maximum of 50 or 100 or whatever. I've looked at the Fetch New Data options which is where I thought the settings were but I can't see anything.
    Any ideas please...
    Thanks,
    Maz

    Many thanks for your help.
I've read other posts and I think they're saying there's a bug somewhere so it may get fixed.
But at least it now gives me an excuse to hunt around for an alternative email app.

  • How can I make the message date appear with the time for unread messages?

Mail systems I am moving from display the date & time with the messages. I need this displayed to determine aging and importance of received mail. When archiving/saving old mail it helps filing mail off and not duplicate archived messages.

Thunderbird displays time and date for all messages except for the present day messages. The time only is displayed for today and the date is appended at midnight.

  • The case of the mysterious hidden content - second hand iMac

Dear people with more knowledge than me... (i.e. dear everyone...)
I have recently purchased a second hand intel iMac (late 2006 model) to replace my trusty (but noisy) Powermac G4 Mirror Door Drive. It was purchased 'wiped' with a fresh install of Lion.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a backup of my old hard drive (or at least the 60GB partition of it that I was using - I had Tiger installed on it) and then used the Migration Assistant to re-create an image of Zion in the wide expanses of the new promised land (250GB capacity).
All seemed to go well (but time consuming - it took several days to port everything to/from my USB external hard-drive). A few days later, when I checked About this mac I was shocked to discover that I only had 5GB of storage remaining.
I did a little poking about and realised I had left a couple of user profiles hanging around during my pre-Migration Assistant faffing. These duplicated much of what I had later migrated over more comprehensively, so I deleted these additional user profiles and this freed up a further 58GB or so.
My system information now tells me that I have
    249.2 GB Capacity
    63.69 GB Available
    185.5 GB Used
    The used component consists of:
    Audio 137.47 GB
    Movies 7.03 GB
    Photos 9.74 GB
    Apps 3.34 GB
    Backups 0
    Other 27.94 GB
However, when I go through all my available files and folders using the Finder, the grand total of space that I have used comes to around 88GB:
My home folder (the only user profile I didn't delete) 42.98 GB
Desktop 4.09 GB (I know, I know, clean your room...)
    Applications 2.31 GB
    Documents 2.8 MB (yes MB)
    Movies 0
    Music 38.59 GB
    Photos 385 KB (yes KB)
    Total ± 80GB
Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the disk partition I Migrated over was only 60GB in total (?!), where on earth are the other 97.5 GB of files, and how can I see/delete them to free up drive space I thought I had...?
...I imagine that the audio, movies etc., that are unaccounted for actually belong(ed) to the previous owner of the iMac. What I don't know how to do is see/access/delete them to free up disk space. There are no additional users other than my own account that I can see. That's not to say they are not there.
    What can I do?
Thank you in anticipation of any help or advice.

the (hidden) folder _CCC Archives takes up a whopping 107 GB, much of which consists of multiple copies of the same audio files (due to poor file management and copies of copies, I think..). I'm now looking for a utility that will be able to locate and list duplicate files so I can verify that the _CCC Archives folder files are replicated elsewhere.
I use CCC, but not the "archive" feature (since my main backups are made with Time Machine).
According to it's Help, that folder contains the backup copies of files that had been changed on the "source" drive.
But this large folder is on your internal HD, right?  Here's what I think happened:
When you made the original CCC clone from your old Mac, you selected the option to "archive" the copies of things that had been changed.  For some period of time, it did that.
Later, when you used Migration Assistant, it copied all those old files from the clone (via the Other files and folders on <HD name> option) back on to your new internal HD.
So yes, the files there should be prior versions of things on your system.
There are various options to have CCC manage those files.  You can assign a certain size to it, and it will delete the oldest files when necessary to make room for new ones;  or "prune" files after a specified number of days, etc.
Click Help in the CCC menubar, then CCC help, then review the Backup and archiving settings section:

  • The Case of the Mysterious Question Mark...

OK, I'm flummoxed. This is a new development.
When I send an email to someone on a PC, the second line of my signature (after my company name) suddenly has a question mark (?) at the end of it. This hasn't happened before. Nothing has changed in my sig for over a year, and this just started a week or so ago.
    What is causing this?
How can I get rid of it?
    And... <scary organ music>
    What will happen to Mabel?!?!?
    Thx for your help.

For info on the usual cause of question marks, see this note:

  • The case of the mysterious non-expanding tree.

    Hello all,
    I've got a strange problem that I can't figure out. At it's
simplest, i've got a tree and two xml objects. In mx tag for the
tree I define one of the xml objects as the dataprovider,
additionally i've defined an event handler for the trees
creationComplete event that opens up the root nood. This works
great and is exactly what I want.
    But...
I've also got a button, click on the button and it either a)
changes the dataprovider of the tree to the second xml object, or
    b) change the xml in the dataprovider already assigned. Then,
because the data has changed and the tree re-renders it ends up
collapsed again so immediately after changing it's data I try to
open the root node but nothing happens. No errors, just nothing.
For the purpose of debugging i added a second button that
simply tries to expand the root node of the tree after i've changed
the trees data provider and it works fine. The line of code that
exists in both the first and second buttons and that should open
the tree only works in the second button for some reason. The only
thing I can think of is timing, perhaps when trying to expand the
node in the line of code directly following the change to the
dataprovider the data hasn't loaded into the tree yet so it can't
expand the node but, i've tried all sorts of event handlers and
they don't seem to work either.
Here's a link if someone wants to download my test.mxml file
and try it themselves. There's more comments in the code but it's a
super simple test page so it should be immediate where the problem
    is...

    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Tracy,
callLater() was exactly what I needed. I had no idea that
method even existed, most things have events that fire when
something important happens that I want to respond to, or are timed
better for me to respond to that I've yet to need callLater(). Of
course I'm still new at flex...
    Best,

  • Why "Bulk Mail" foder does not display number of unread messages unless I click the folder (Yahoo mail through IMAP)?

Yahoo mail account's "Spam" folder (as viewed through "Yahoo mail" web interface) is displayed in Thunderbird as "Bulk Mail" (IMAP). Looking at the account's foders in Thunderbird I see the number of unread messages in each folder. "Bulk Mail" appears always to be empty. If I click the "Bulk Mail" folder, then magically messages appear in message list, and the number of unread messages is displayed next to folder name, like in all other folders of this account.
Why I need to touch the "Bulk Mail" folder in order to see the number of messages in it?
Yahoo deletes messages from this folder at certain periods. I'm in danger of loosing messages unless I remember to touch all of my Yahoo account's Bulk Mail folders in Thunderbird.
How I can get "Bulk Mail" folder to show the number of unread messages like all other folders of the same account do?
    Thunderbird 24.6.0, Windows 7 Enterprise (Sp1)
    pekka

I don't use IMAP in Thunderbird, so I can't provide step-by-step instructions, however, other e-mail programs have settings for whether or not to synchronize each individual folder on a schedule or using push IMAP (vs when clicked). If Thunderbird has those settings, I would expect them to appear in the folder properties or account settings. Perhaps this will be helpful, but I don't know if you've already done some digging like this or not.
FYI, a quick search brought me to this page:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/configuration-options-folders
One item listed in that page is this:
Configure IMAP folders, connections and namespaces
    Menu location: Tools | Account Settings | <account name> | Server Settings | Advanced
Perhaps that would be a good place to start since it does mention IMAP folder connections, but folder properties still might be an easier place to peek first, just in case. For that, the site lists this:
Configure folder properties (IMAP folders only)
Menu location: Edit | Folder Properties | General Information
However, I think you could right-click on the "Bulk Mail" folder and hit properties in the pop-up menu.

  • I keep getting the 'Profile missing or inaccessible' error message. I've tried some of the advice given to others but none of it is working for me. I've tried opening the Profile Manager but I get the same error message when I try to do that.

Since yesterday when trying to use Firefox I've been getting error 'Profile missing or inaccessible'.
I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling it & from looking at advice to others with this problem I tried to access the Profile Manager but when I try to do that I again get the Profile missing error message.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
    See:

  • Mail - Number of Unread messages missing in Mailbox list

Although the number of unread messages is properly shown under Inbox on the Mailboxes list next to two of my three Mail accounts, the other one shows none when there some.  The quantity is also missing from the total number of messages next to Inbox when I collapse the list.  This was working fine for many years.
How can I restore this feature?
    Thanks!!

    Quit Mail.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Delete the selected file. Relaunch Mail and test. It should re-index your mailboxes.

  • Mail says I have 11 unread messages in the Dock - but I don't

Just did a clean install of Leopard and copied my Mail legacy folders over from backup. But now the Dock says I have 11 unread messages (that's what the little red starburst means, right?). But when I go into Mail I can't find any unread messages any where. I have the preference turns on that displays the number of unread messages in a given box, but none of my boxes are showing a number. I've also opened all of the boxes for a visual review and simply can't find any unread messages anywhere.
I know it's a small thing, but it's driving me nuts...
    Thanks,
    M.

    Thanks, Ernie—
Two accounts. No third-party apps. I see a little red starburst (spiky ball with a white number within) in the Dock. Says 11. But I can't find any unread messages. But I should have mentioned that my "Drafts" folder shows a five. Is this a new thing with Leopard? I don't think Mail used to count Drafts in Tiger. Could those be contributing to the 11? Still can't find the other six...
I'll try rebuilding the mailboxes and see if that helps.

  • How do I clear unread message in Apple Mail?

Using Apple Mail 6.6 on a MacBook Pro running OX X 10.8.5.  Our Exchange server is 2007/2010. Besides my Exchange mail, I have 2 Gmail accounts and one iCloud account in Apple Mail.  I have no issues with the Gmail or iCloud accounts.
Currently, I have 34 "unread" message from my Exchange account in Apple Mail.  On my iPhone, iPad and Outlook (PC), I have 0 unread messages.  When I filter Apple Mail for unread messages, there are none.  It's as if these are phantom unread messages.  I did a rebuild of the Exchange account in Apple Mail and I deleted and re-installed the Exhange Account in Apple Mail.  And still I am left with these mysterious 34 unread messages.
It is really annoying.  Any thoughts?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Warning: The process may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. For reasonable-sized mailboxes, it should only take a few minutes.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Wrong numbers of unread messages reported on folders

    Hi,
I have a very annoying problem with Mail where it reports the number of unread messages incorrectly on folders other than my inbox. I am using an IMAP account, with rules on the server to file messages to different folders depending on what address they were sent to.
Then often Mail will report 2 unread messages in one of these folders but clicking on the folder makes it recalculate to the correct value, 1.
Doing a rebuild on the folder seemed to fix it for about a day, but obviously it's not practical to do that so often.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix/workaround?

Thanks - I understand the read flag is set on the server, but I don't think that's the case here. Mail is not incorrectly reporting some messages as read when they aren't - it just has the count of unread wrong (in subscription folders, not in the inbox)...
Also although I do access mail from other machines/web client it happens when I haven't...
    Ie
send mail to myself at address that gets filed into a folder by the server
no log on to mail from web or other computer
mail arrives in folder, reported by Mail as 2 unread messages
click on folder, resyncs very quickly, unread count revised to 1 (correct)
In fact once I was watching while a mail came in - the count first showed 1 (correct) then quickly changed to 2.
I'm not sure what extra info I can provide - I had imagined this was a common problem since through google I found many others observing the same behaviour (but no solution).
The IMAP account is with Fastmail, who I believe run Cyrus.
I have letterbox and IMAP-IDLE plugin, but this problem was happening before installation of both of those.
    Thanks again,
    PS
as a side note - my drafts folder (on the server) reports 2 messages unread (there are two messages in there) - is this normal? (drafts to be reported as unread) - I must admit I'd prefer they weren't.
