Case sensitivity error

My external hard drive for my time machine broke. I can copy but not write. So I need to backup my data onto a new drive. For some reason, my old time machine is formatted "case-sensitive".
I bought a new drive and formatted it for Extended Journaled and I unchecked the "ignore ownership on this volume". When I drag the backup folder from old to new I get an error that says "the volume has the wrong case-sensitivity for a backup".
Ok, well I just want to get my data off before my old time machine fries. So I changed the volume on the new time machine to be "case-sensitive" so it is the same as the old. Now when I drag the backup folder I get an error that says the volume is the wrong type for a backup.
With either formatting on the new time machine, I am able to manually copy a file to it.
What do I to do to move my backup folder from the old time machine to the new time machine?
Thank you!! If it makes any difference the old time machine is a 1TB seagate and the new one is a 2TB seagate.

That's the problem. The +file system+ is damaged.
I'm glad I have another copy of my important files on a different external hard drive.
Yes, "secondary" backups are always a good idea. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some suggestions.
I just started a brand new time machine and I'm going to put the old one in a box and hope I never need it. I think it's fried for good now. I probably should have backed it up when it started making clicking sounds.
Yup, it sure sounds like it. There's a chance a heavy-duty 3rd-party app like +Disk Warrior+ could repair the file system problem, but if the disk is failing physically, it's very unlikely anything can resurrect it.

  • Time Machine Case-Sensitive Error

I've read several posts about people who encounter the Time Machine error that arises when TM thinks that one of the volumes (source or destination) is case-sensitive while the other is not. Some people encounter this error genuinely, by which I mean that there is in fact a discrepancy between the file systems; this is not the situation I wish to address.
There are other people - myself included - who have been using TM successfully for months or longer until one day the error crops up. When we check Disk Utility, both source and destination are shown to be case-insensitive. Many approaches have been suggested, from rebooting to reformatting, and many people have reported success; however, it appears to me that the problem has not been solved, since the cause of the problem has not been identified.
In my own experience rebooting sometimes fixes the problems temporarily (for a few weeks) before it later reappears. But I would rather not reboot repeatedly, repeatedly Verify the disks using Disk Utility (finding no errors every time), or reformat unless I am sure that it will fix the problem once and for all. With that in mind, does anyone know of a permanent fix to this problem?
    Details:
    - TM thinks that the source volume Macintosh HD is case-sensitive
    - Disk Utility says that both the source and the external Firewire destination are case-insensitive

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I've not seen any such posts here (and I read at least the title of every post in both the Leopard and Snow Leopard Time Machine forums).
There are problems, on occasion, when there's a case-sensitive disk image of some kind on the internal HD (some downloaded software comes on case-sensitive disk images, for some reason); but that doesn't seem to be what you're experiencing.
What, exactly, does the message say?
There might be some sort of problem with your internal HD. When this happens, does the disk show it's S.M.A.R.T. status as Verified? Does +Verify Disk+ ever show an error?
I'd be inclined to try a "full reset" per #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. It's possible the preference file that directs you to is corrupted. This is a long shot, of course, but worth a try.
If this happens again, look for any disk images, and try to get the exact message. You may also want to look in your system.log for messages.

  • Time Machine error message - "case sensitive volume" conflict

After apparently working fine for a month or so, Time Machine is giving me an error message that reads, "A volume you are backing up is case sensitive, but the backup volume is not." I don't know what this means. How do I identify the case sensitive volume, so that I can exclude it from backup, assuming that's the correct action?
    Help is appreciated! Thanks

I've had this occur to me too, but I think that maybe - and it's important that I underscore the 'maybe' part - I might have put my finger on the cause and, perhaps, the solution.
In my case, I happened to have had Disk Tools open when I downloaded a .dmg disk image. It seems that Disk Tools tends to 'remember' the disk image as a mounted volume, even though it's no longer on the desktop. I don't know what this might have to do with Time Machine, (and hopefully there is an Apple tech who is monitoring this thread), but when I deleted the disk image from the Disk Tools volume list, the "Case-Sensitive" error went away.
I don't know if this is really the root cause, but if anyone is experiencing the same "case-sensitive volume" error, try opening Disk Tools and see if there is a disk image volume appearing at the the bottom of the Disk Volumes list. If so, select it (or them, if there's more than one), and do a Command-Delete to remove them. Once the disk-image volumes have been removed from the list, try running Time Machine again. If the error is gone, post here so that other readers can try the same thing!

    Tom

  • Re-visit Case Sensitive backup

I am haveing some difficulty following the various threads on the subject of a Time Capsule restoration using a case sensitive backup to restore to a non case sensitive drive. Six weeks ago I put four new 2TB drives in my system with various partioning schemes and all formatted as HFS+Journaled. One of the internal drives acts as a clone backup of my two boot drives and my WIP drive partitions and external drives attached to clone the other partitions. My WIP drive however is also set up for a Time Capsule backup which, because of a stupid action on my part, I wanted to restore to a backup taken less than an hour ago. When I try and restore to that however I get the Case Sensitive error. How can that be when the backup was performed from a non case sensitive drive, surely the sparse bundle will have taken a non case sensitive backup ?

No, the TC is not formatted case sensitive.. it is HFS+ but the sparsebundle which you must realise is a virtual disk on any device on which it resides is case sensitive. That includes disks that are not even HFS formatted.

I am trying to install MasterCollection_CS6_LS16. When I double click the install file I get this error message: We've encountered the following issues. Hey iraravitz,
Could you please let me know what version of OS are working on.
You might receive this error when you attempt to install on a drive with the HFS+ Case Sensitive file system, which is not supported for installation of Adobe Creative Suite 6.
So, please try installing on a drive that has been formatted with a supported file system.
You might refer the KB doc link mentioned below for the same:

  • How can I copy media from an HFS case-sensitive drive to an HFS case-insensitive drive without getting an error?

About a year ago, I accidentally created a partition on my drive for my iTunes Music. On that parition, called MUSIC, I selected the filesystem to be an HFS, Journaled, case-sensitive partition. Since then, all of my music, new and old, lives on the case-sensitive MUSIC parition.
My other partition, called BOX, is an HFS, Journaled, case-insensitive filesystem, as are my external drives I use for archiving and backing up my music.
My dilemma: when I try to copy my music/iTunes media from the MUSIC partition to a different partition that's case-insensitive, I obviously run into errors saying that certain files can't be copied because they will overwrite others. Subsequently, I can't back up my music and iTunes media to another drive unless it has the same filesystem parameters favoring case-sensitivity. I want to move my media to a case-insenstive drive/partition.
As the story goes, I'd like to avoid having to reformat and worry about moving my media around because I feel, in the end, I'd end up doing more harm then good in my pursuit to fix this issue.
My question: is there some way I can detect which files are conflicting with each other, and then manually rename them? My music library runs about 16,000 songs deep, but I'd still feel saved even if I had to go through and manually rename all of the music files so they don't conflict with each other in order to get them on to a case-insensitive drive. Perhaps there's an AppleScript someone knows about that I could execute in my MUSIC partition to see which files/directories are causing my problems? In other words, I'm thinking there could be a way to detect the same file/directory names that are only different soley because of their case.
Any help, suggestions, or solutions are welcome. Thank you all for your time in helping me solve this!
    And have a Happy Thanksgiving

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • Error Message: Creative Suite 6 Case-Sensitive Volumes

Hello, we have a 2011 iMac which we just had a new hard drive installed on. We are now trying to re-install Creative Suite 6, and getting the error message:
"Installation on case-sensitive drives is not supported. Please choose a different volume for installation."
Is this something to do with the new hard drive or can we simple choose another destination to install? The error message came up before the usual 'change your install location' options that most software has.
And would we get the same problem if we tried to download Creative Cloud instead?
Appreciate any expert assistance thank you!

There is no easy solution to this as Adobe software cannot be installed on a disk that has been formatted to be case sensitive.
The most basic way to sort it out is to reformat the hard disk with the usual option for Macs which is 'Mac OS Extended (Journalled)'. Then reinstall the OS and software.
It depends on individual circumstances if this is feasible.
Creative Cloud applications still install on the hard disk so it would make no difference to the original problem.
If you have the option to install to another hard disk, that is not case sensitive, this is also unlikely to solve the problem as some files are required to be installed on the boot disk.

Now that I know the WEP password I cant get Network Diagnostics to accept it. I know it is case sensitive and was very careful when I entered the password. What should I do?

Hi, unfortunately WEP is about as secure as a bar of gold lent to a Gang Den! It can be broken in under 30 seconds these days!
If the PW is ASCII, try enclosing it in qoute marks, if Hex try preceding it with the & or % sign.
Also, is the Router set to only allow connect ion to MAC addies of the Interface?
