  • Pls Help "Windows USB Device Malfunction" for 2nd Gen nano

Desparately hoping for some assistance here...
I got a used 2nd generation nano that charges properly and plays the songs that are already on it. When I try to hook it up to the computer I get a +USB Device not recognized message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it"+
I am getting this same msg on an older PC running Windows XP and all the latest Service packs and I'm getting the same message on a newer PC with Vista.
Both computers recognize my 3rd generation nano and ipod mini.
I tried the 5Rs. I did the Windows update and downloaded the latest itunes.
I also tried various combinations of resetting (menu + select) while I was attaching the ipod to the computer. I've tried several different USB cables, but I know the cables and the USB ports are fine because the other ipods work with them and this ipod does charge when connected to the PC.
Based on some of the other postings I tried opening the Device Manager and the ipod shows up under USB controllers as "Unknown Device." Windows obviously can't find the driver for it in order to update.
Does anyone have any ideas here? Is there a way I can manually update the driver file?
    thank you!

Okay, this is exactly what the popup says:
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
My friend who has an older ipod says unplugging and plugging it in so much is going to kill the battery. Someone please help! I went to exchange it at an apple store yesterday and the guy said I should try it on the computer again.

  • Installing iTunes 7 for 2nd Gen Nano

When trying to install iTunes after buying a new Nano teh message at the end of the install process says:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs & DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
....and the notebook then refuses to acknowledge there is a CD/DVD burner attached for use or even in 'My Computer'
The CD diagnostics utility says that the CD/DVD RW is not recognised?!
Is there any way to get it working or does the HP Easynote not support iTunes!!?!?

okay, there's a couple of different ways we can go about this.
the subtle method for sorting out what the filter conflict is is to use the techniques from the following document:
iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
(the idea is to use the registry edits to determine precisely which filter entries are conflicting with the iTunes filter entries.)
the quicker and dirtier (but still effective) technique is to use the instructions (or the guided help) from the following Microsoft document to remove all filter entries from the PC:
(MS) CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
once you've cleared those, you need to put the iTunes filter entries back. otherwise, whenever you launch itunes, you'll probably get the following message flashed at you:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs & DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
to get those entries back for itunes, do a reboot and repair.
Reboot the PC (very important) and then do a repair install of itunes. in your Add/Remove programs, select iTunes, click "Change" and then click "Repair".
... as to collateral damage. last time i checked, the UK Packard Bells were shipping with a version of RecordNow 7.x preinstalled. so you might want to check to see if that is still operational after the filter edit.

  • 2nd gen nano charging, not recognized by PC

I've had an old 2nd gen nano for years, it's always worked great.  Now neither of my two computers will recognize it (via USB), either on iTunes or My Computer or in Device Manager.  The iPod charges and will even play music as if it were plugged into a car or wall outlet rather than a computer, but it won't sync to iTunes.
    I've tried:
    -resetting it (several times)
    -downloading the newest iTunes software
-putting the iPod in disk mode
-using multiple USB cords and ports on two different computers
-Apple troubleshooting assistant for 2nd gen nano (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano2gen/)
I'd like to uninstall the iPod driver, but I don't know how since the iPod doesn't show up in Device Manager.
I live over an hour away from the nearest Apple store, so I'm waiting to take it in for service as a last resort.  Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
I had the same issue with my Late 2009 Mac mini running Mavericks and iTunes 12. When I connected my 2nd generation iPod shuffle it would blink amber once then do nothing. This seems to be a common problem with the iPod shuffle and newer versions of Mac OS X (10.6 and up) and iTunes albeit with somewhat varying symptoms but the same overall problem syncing the iPod with iTunes.
The predominant go-to solution is to give the iPod more power by either connecting the iPod directly to a USB port on the Mac or by disconnecting all other USB devices. On paper this makes sense.
What worked for me, however, was the opposite. After trying to solve this problem for hours (weeks, months), I had success ONLY after adding a low-powered 4-port USB hub to the chain between the iPod and the Mac. I suspect this had the effect of throttling the power supplied to the iPod from the Mac. I was able to perform a restore on the iPod then sync my music over.
I can't tell you much about the USB hub except that it is running at USB 1.1 speeds (12 Mb/sec). In theory a USB 1.1 extension cable should also do the trick. You might even be able to use the USB hub in old wired Apple USB keyboard. I will attach a photo of the hub I used to this post for greater clarity.
    I really hope this helps.

  • Does anyone know when there will be the hardcover cases for the new nano?

when do the clear, plastic hard cases for 5th gen nano come out?

Yeah, I even found an iShade by griffin at my local best buy for the 5G the day that I picked up my 16GB edition for the gym!
They're out... Also you can buy from just about all manufacturer's online now... I think some stores are still waiting to bring them in, as they had to much stuff for the 4G....

  • Hard/soft case for the 2nd gen nano?

I'd really like to buy an 8GB 2nd generation Nano, but am having to delay as i can't find a single case for it (ideally one with a belt clip). I don't want to order a case designed for a 1st gen Nano as i'm not sure it would fit due to the slight size difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen Nanos.
Are there any cases currently available that are designed to fit 2nd gen Nanos? If not, does anyone know when some might become available?
    Thanks for the help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
In the coming weeks, more and more cases will be released for the 2G iPod nano. You can always go to the online Apple Store too and see what they have available at the moment (tell the store to show you cases compatible with 2G nanos).

  • How do I suggest an accessory for the 2nd gen nano?

I'm trying to make a suggestion to Apple to make a belt clip for the 2nd gen nano like the older 40gb iPods had. How do I make one, because I can't find any sort of suggestion box(for lack of better term)

You may be able to use the apple iPod feedback form
to make that type of suggestion. You might also want
to check other sites that make iPod accessories to
see if they have one that you may like.

  • 2nd gen nano not recognized by XP or iTunes

    Situation:
2nd gen nano with Nike+ will not appear in Device Manager nor charge. In essence, the XP pro computer does not see the nano at all. However, Nike+ still works, the nano still works in an iHome clock radio and it will beep when connected to a dock.
    Troubleshooting:
    * 5Rs attempted - however, since the PC Device Manager will not see the nano, I can't issue any restore commands.
    * even with nano in disk mode, PC does not see it
    * older first gen nano still works properly with same iTunes environment.
Has the USB on the newer nano gone bye-bye?

  • 2nd gen nano not recognized by MBA / Lion 10.7.4 / iTunes 10.6.3

I have this 2nd gen nano (and a bunch of other ones) set to manage music manually. This particular device has worked fine while connected to MBP mid 2010 running SL and most recent iTunes.
But, this 2nd gen nano does not show up on the MacBook Air, mid-2011, running Lion 10.7.4, iTunes 10.6.3.
I have reset the nano. It plays fine, responds to setting changes properly and it does charge while plugged into either USB port of the MBA.  The computer is plugged into wall juice, and the other USB port is not in use while I try to get the nano recognized.
Disk utility does not see it either.
This MBA is not the computer I usually sync this 2nd gen nano to since that machine (the MBP mid 2010) is out for repair.
i expected iTunes on this MBA  to just mount the thing (since the iPod has the manual preference set, and is a Mac-formatted nano) and that it would then let me delete a few picks and drag a few newer tunes onto it.
The MBA, the nano and my out-for-repair MBP all have the same Apple ID associated with purchased music on the devices.
I rarely reload this nano and haven't actually changed its music since I put the MBP to Lion, so I am not sure if it's Lion, iTunes or the MBA that is the issue with this 2nd gen nano.
After the 2nd nano would not mount, I tried two other iPods, one is a 3rd gen nano and the other is a Classic.   Both of them connected fine and let me drag stuff onto them.
So it seems that either Lion 10.7.4 or iTunes 10.6.3 does not feel like recognizing the 2nd gen nano.  Hope this can be fixed.  That model nano is practically indestructible and there are still lots of them out there!

    Update on the above:
I did some more research on this using assorted of my 2nd gen nanos and a couple 1st gen ones as well.
It's only the 2GB 2nd gen nanos  MA477LL part number, that do not work with Lion / 10.7.4 / iTunes 10.6.3.
2nd gen MA477LL  does not work, it's a 2GB model. I have two of these.  Neither works.
    2nd gen MA428LL  works  it is a 4GB model
    2nd gen MA426LL  works  it is a 4GB model
    1st gen MA352LL  works - it's a 1st gen nano refurb (1GB)
1st gen MA350LL  (1GB) - this is another 1st gen nano refurb, but one that's formatted for Windows (and had nothing on it when I connected it).  For some reason it mounted fine in Mac iTunes environment and even let me drag an AAC track onto it.  I was dumbfounded.   On the desktop, its sys info showed info like any FAT32 flashdrive but it did have an iPod nano icon on it.   I ejected it from iTunes and plugged in a pair of earbuds and hit play on the track. It plays fine.   Go figure!  I rechecked the settings in the device.  It does say Windows for the format. I feel like I'm in the Bermuda triangle.  I might have to reformat it next time a Windows iTunes setup sees that nano though.
So bottom line here with the second gen nanos:    it's the 2GB model, the 2nd gen nanos with model MA477LL that do not work in Lion and iTunes 10.6.3 for whatever reason.   Both of my devices with that model number do work fine on an older MBA running Snow Leopard and iTunes 10.4.

  • I can't syn my 2nd gen nano work with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2)

I recently got a new computer with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2) and a 2nd gen Nano. I have the latest version of itunes but when I plug in the Nano it won't sync.
The Nano is nowhere to be seen in itunes and shows in My Computer with an exclamation mark over it. The only thing it will do is charge.
The Nano syncs on my sisters computer which has Windows XP (SP1) and other devices work on the USB ports on my computer.
Does anyone have a clue what is wrong or what I can do.
I've had the Nano for nearly four months now and it's driving me mad!!!

    Problem solved:
I used driver guide to download usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf then placed these files in my i386 folder. Then when I restarted my PC and connected my iPod I selected the i386 folder as the location to search for drivers. After that it recognised my iPod as a storage device and installed it.

  • Connecting mini to 2nd gen nano

I've had an ipod mini4gb for many years now. Bought myself a second hand 2nd gen nano with no leads. I used my ipod mini wall charger to charge it no problem. When i put the usb lead from my ipod mini into the nano and then into the pc it lights up but is not recognised by pc or itunes.
Q1. *Do i need to buy a different lead for it?*
Q2. *can i use them both on the same pc,(same itunes)*
ps. my lead still *works fine with my ipod mini*.

Piece of s**t ipod, have tried it on my sons pc(he does not have itunes). Tried the new lead in my mini on it and it see's it. try the new lead with my nano...........nothing, waste of money buying the lead!!! So i expect this is where it turns out to be cheaper to buy another one more than get it repaired, expect it something silly like £30.00 just to walk through the repairemans door!!
Thanks for your help by the way. One thing still left unanswered, would i be able to use both ipods on the same itunes(obviously not at the same time)???
    cheers.
