Casing cracked.

Hello folks,
I opened my macbook tonight and a little (about 1mm x 10mm) piece of the casing, at the corner of inside surface, to the left of the trackpad, came away.
I haven't moved it around much - usually just sits on my coffee table. I've had it since December.
Has anything like this happened to anyone else?
My three year old iBook is still in one piece and I carry it around with me.

I can tell you right now that this is very common. I know this because it has happened to my Macbook, as well as several class mate's macbook's. I study a degree in music technology so out of my class of about 25, most have Macbooks, and half of them have these same cracks etc. Its obviously this is due to a design flaw since myself and my friends look after our macs very well.
On my Macbook, a small slither measuring about 2cm long and 2mm wide has fell off around the edge opposite the mouse pad and to the right.
Just to note, strange hair line cracks have made there way across the casing at the back, beside the air vents.
Its something that has really bugged me for a wile now.
Steve.

  • Macbook casing cracked

    Hi team.
Being a bit of a fanboi, I always take the greatest of care of my equipment. However my macbook has developed a crack in the casework quite big of around 3cm. It runs where the lid closes with the case where the slightly raised bit of plastic is. The crack is on the right hand side on the keyboard case bit, if that makes sense.
It looks like where the lid closes with the case its been banging it until it cracks.
I had no idea damage was being caused, it was just suddenly there.
My feeling is this is a flaw in design, is it covered under warranty?

Regrettable that this happened to anyone, but try getting those kind of repair to a Windoze laptop. Could you drive to the Dell/HP/Sony/Gateway store and get anything fixed at the SmartPerson Bar, in 3 hours from discovery to fixed?
FWIW, my MB and my wife's are so far crack free, but a similar thing happened to my prior iBook, only on the left side, also common to that model, but out of the 3 year Applecare period. I attributed the problem to my bad habit of picking the cumputer up, lid open by the left front corner and carrying it around horizontally supported only on that one corner. I've now stopped myself from doing that - Any of you do that?

  • Crack in X220 casing + poor support

Hi. After much saving up and research I bought a top-of-the-range x220 four months ago in the US ($1,200). A couple of days ago a crack (see picture) appeared in the casing on the right side. Now, I can state with absolute confidence that the laptop has never been misused, dropped, bumped, or anything like that. I also have a super-padded crumpler laptop bag for it when I take it anywhere.
I called Lenovo support here in the Netherlands and after struggling for a while to get them to respond to my emails, an agent told me over the phone that the crack was not covered by the warranty. I protested but to no avail.
Now, call me crazy, but - if Lenovo sells you a top of the range laptop with promises of "military" durability,; you treat it like a baby (seriously, they could just inspect the thing and see there's been no accidental damage); and the casing cracks - then, shouldn't they be apologising as well as repairing it under warranty? Instead you get a blank wall and the off-hand claim that you automagically damaged your laptop and have to shell out to have it repaired... Well, if you're like me, you'd be getting pretty hot under the collar.
ps: when you hold the laptop by the palmrest area the crack widens. It seems like that spot above the corner of the hard drive panel is simply too weak by design.

As soon as I saw the pic i had a pretty good idea what caused this.
Excessively tightened internal vertical screws. No doubt about it.

  • IPhone 3G little cracking case... Any Support, please?

    Dear Folks,
This is my third post regarding my iPhone 3G because the 2 previous ones were deleted by one Apple Moderator (I hope that this one is not because I need help, and I don't know where to find it, please).
In fact, several days ago, after take out my nice protective Belkin Black silicon cover, and take a look around the plastic bottom cover, I discovered it! I was suffering the same cracking case that other user suffered! My beloved iPhone had a hairline casing crack between the earphone jack and the silver trim!... (Although I never drop it and I treated it like a newborn) (I never took so much care with an electronic daily-use device... but I wanted to have it so shiny like the box unpacking first day).
I am in Belgium, so the only Support can be done by the local Mobile telecommunications, but they told me that this kind of defect is not covered by the Apple iPhone 3G Warranty because none kind of Plastic Breakages are not covered, then they ignore me,... but I need to put in contact with Apple Customer Support, please.
Do you know how I can put in contact Apple Support to receive some help for my in Warraty Time period iPhone 3G, please?
    Thanks by your help.
    Best regards.
P.D. I know that the Apple employees read and manage this forum,... so, Could you show me the way, please?

    1) Why I cannot reach Apple for this issue with my mobile phone, if for an iPod Touch I can trough their web directly?
No one here can answer Apple's policy directly. Terms of use forbid us on the right to guess it, and the vast majority of posters don't have any direct affiliation with Apple. If you don't like it, you can always post feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/feedback.html
    2) Why I have to pass through MOBISTAR (Belgium) and I cannot contact directly with Apple? This is damaging the image of Apple, which is more shiny and worldwide than MOBISTAR.
The government likely has certain agreements with certain phone carriers who can contract the airwaves. That's the way it is here. Unfortunately it has allowed monopolies to develop, and create untenable situations for the consumers. When certain monopolies contract out their phone service, they end up picking the manufacturers who they think will give the best contract for the carrier, regardless of how the consumer squelches.
    3) How many users suffer this issue without complaints thinking that is their fault when it is not?
That's impossible to tell. Apple does not publish lemon figures, and certainly it is hard to tell how much of it is due to abuse by users, and how much is design defect, because many consumers go out there and blame Apple when they've let their dogs eat their phones. I'm not saying that you did, but those not careful with their phones are creating a situation where others have to pay. This is why there are insurance companies for cell phones separate of the warranty.

  • EARPHONES

my earphones are bust after roughly 3 weeks, i went to buy another pair and the guy in the shop said that i pod earphones break just by looking at them, has any one else had bother and should i just buy a pair of sony ones or whatever????

to be frank I have never liked the apple earbuds.the sound is just awful. But It took at least a year before my one pair broke and that was just the rubber casing cracked.
If you are set on earbuds don't get sony's. I don't like their earbuds. panasonic earbuds are pretty good I think.

  • Cracked Casing/Creaking Track Button --- RESOLUTION?

    Hey everyone,
I'm having a couple of issues with my new macbook (as of august) and though I've seen others post similar questions I haven't noticed if anyone has actually had these issues fixed and what Apple had to say about it...
My casing also seems to be cracking around the bottom edges, the trackpad button is also a creaker (it's almost as if the button doesn't fit properly and snags whenever it's pressed), AND I have some discoloration ON the palmrest area. For those who are going to comment on whether my hands are clean I'll save you the trouble of asking -- yes.
Has anyone else noticed that the edge of the bottom casing is rather sharp? When I type with relaxed hands and forearms the edge along the palmrest area digs into my wrists....
I bought this mac to replace my ibook that died less than a week after its warranty finished so not thrilled by all of these 'minor' but annoying problems.

You're not alone. I have a chip on the left front case, two emerging cracks on the bottom case and a blue discoloration on the right corner of the front case near the power. I bought my macbook last week of September and I already have these annoying chip, cracks and blues. I've sent my laptop to apple care and i was disappointed that I had to write to them directly since it's not the casings are not covered. Imagine!? You pay so much and they won't pay for their own defects or failure of design.
Anyway, I'm still waiting and hoping they replace it as my macbook is still with the shop. If not, this is really a big disappointment.

  • I never heard about the Macbook recall for cracked casing along the bottom of the keyboard. Is it too late to get it fixed?

I realise maybe your personal issue was sorted, but it may help others:
I took my wife's 3-year old Macbook into the genius bar yesterday expecting to pay for a new casing, but was told there was still an extended warranty for Macbook plastic case (provided up to 5 years old and no signs of abuse)
They will replace the top case and screen bezel at no cost, which I think is excellent service.

  • Does the 1 year warranty cover a crack between the front and back casing?

No, I don't think so if it's through mishandling.

  • Crack in casing

    Hi all,
Curious thing I just found. When rearranging our computer room, my wife noticed a crack in the G5 casing. It's on the top right corner extending from the edge of the display about 3/4 of the way out. It's a hairline fracture, and there is no obvious hardware damage otherwise. The display is still fine, and nothing pops out during a hardware test. My question is, does anyone know if this were to void the warranty? Or better yet, is it something covered by the warranty? Like I said, we have no idea how it got there (after all it's a desktop not a laptop, doesn't move much). Thanks in advance for any input.

I'm not sure whether Apple would consider a hairline crack something to worry about or repair, but call them anyway at 800-275-2273 and see what they have to say. It's a good idea to talk to them anyway and register the fact that you have the crack - they might well want to replace the case, but call and see.
Please post back and let us know what happens,

  • Cracked Screen Casing

Recently while I was trying to close the screen, I saw that the casing holding the screen on was cracked in the bottom corners. I basically treated the screen carefully, closing it from the bottom, slowly, and that seemed to work fine. But recently, when I was trying to do the same thing, it completely cracked through, and dethreaded the two screws in those corners. So now, the part where the casing attaches to the base does not rotate after a certain point, and if I push the screen past that point, the base of the screen actually detaches.
The Screen itself has no issues, all the pixels and everything work. So my question is how much would it cost to get the screen casing replaced after I take it in to the Genius Bar, but still keeping the original LCD screen (so that I don't have to buy a new screen itself, which is usually what costs a lot). I don't want to take it in to a Genius Bar until I know how much it would cost, because I cannot close the screen, and it would be a hassle to transport.

Nevermind, found a thread about it...didn't know it was called a Bezel...

  • Battery expanded and cracked casing?

My macbook is now about a year out of warranty (i extended to three years but it is now expired) this past week i noticed the casing by my right palm looked slightly bloated. I researched and found that it is the battery expanding. I stopped using it but only a few days later it has completely cracked the casing by the right palm rest.
Is this covered under some sort of warranty? Ive never haf anything like this happen.
    Thank you!

Better to get it to an Apple service provider asap before too much damage can occur and they can advise if it is covered for warranty repair.

  • X61S cracked screen casing -- defect?

I bought an X61s at the end of September.  This will be my fourth ThinkPad, and my eighth IBM/Lenovo machine, in general.
I've been satisfied with its performance, though the keyboard is a little cramped (despite having been advertised as "full-sized).
The biggest issue, though, is with the screen: My screen casing has developed a hairline crack where the left-hand metal hinge connects the keyboard/CPU to the screen.  I have not dropped the computer, or treated it roughly, so I'm worried this is indicative of the LCD breakage that's described several places in this forum.  (The LCD crystal, istelf, has not broken, but I'm worried this crack will compromise the protection of the screen, and will eventually lead to its breaking.)
I have the extended IBM coverage, so the fine folks in the warranty department next-day sent me a box to return the unit for repair.  I'm worried, though, this repair will be one of many.  The warranty department person said there were no "known issues" with the screen -- mine is the Ultra Light -- but this forum leads me to believe there could be something wrong.
I'm sure I'm not the only person who uses his laptop constantly, and who depends on it for quite a lot, so being without it for even a few days is a hassle.  Being without it for a few days over and over again would be even worse.
If this is a known issue without yet being declared a "known issue" by Lenovo, I'd sure rather trade in my X61S for an X200 (I'd pay the difference) and not have to deal with screen issues.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks.

keep in mind that forums are inherently filled with negativity.   what you read here is a false sample of real-world statistics.   because of this, it's impossible to derive accurate projections of user experiences from forums.
i personally know quite a few X61s owners who are completely happy with their systems and haven't had any issues.   full disclosure: i'm one of them.
given the fact that you have good warranty coverage, there isn't reason to worry about anything unless something actually becomes a problem.
if you're looking for a reason to get into an X200/X200s instead then that's a possibility.   however, you might have to pay a 15% restocking fee on your unit in the process.

  • IPhone crack in rear casing near dock connector

I have looked after my iPhone (without a case though, I must admit) and noticed two small cracks which have seemed to come out of nowhere, one at the side of the dock connector and one growing right from the middle of it. I have heard it's a common problem with iPhone 3G/3GS! My iPhone warranty runs out in April 2011, but I no longer have any proof of purchase. Is it likely that Apple would replace the iPhone, or even just the rear casing? I have the original packaging/box just no receipt. My nearest Apple store is about 2 hours away, I don't want to get all the way there to find out they won't cover it! Thanks in advance.

Make a genius appointment at the Apple Store, and bring the iPhone. Apple should have the serial number on file and require nothing else.
As far as getting the unit repaired or replaced, each iPhone issue is a case by case basis. I can say that I have had 3 iPhone's replaced due to stress cracks showing up in the back of my iPhone, but my iPhone's have always been in cases and the stress cracks would show up in month or two, so each iPhone wasn't very old.
The genius will inspect the iPhone and then try to determine whether the iPhone has a manufacturing flaw or if it is damage from abuse. Wish you the best in getting it covered, but there is no way to guarantee it. If it is covered you will probably receive a refurbished iPhone as a replacement on the spot.

  • Cracked casing question.

I've got the missing chunk of the casing where the lid closes. I've read on here that Apple is willing to fix it, no questions asked, but I'm wondering how long it takes to fix. Do they send it away, or are they able to replace it in store? I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I'm going on Spring Break soon and I'd rather not be without my MacBook when I'll already be bored enough as it is. Thank you for any help.

My MacBook is actually being repaired for the exact same thing right now.
They do have to send it away, I took mine in on the 18th and the expected date of completion is the 21st. Now, I have taken mine in on several occasions for this same reason and they usually always call me before the forecasted date.

  • Crack in my X201 Casing

    http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y188/hksrps13sr20det/x201-2.jpg
Noticed today that there's a crack in the plastic body case around my X201, right near the physical wireless on / off switch. Rather flimsy / thin plastic in this area. I'm going to turn this in for repair under warranty.
Has anyone else had this type of issue? How long was the turnaround from depot service?
BTW, I have no idea what number I need to call to request in-warranty repair and the overnight box. Help!

Yeah, along with the cracked portion near the wireless radio switch, I've also listed the following "grievances":
    - The chassis is not straight; while on a desk, the front right portion of computer doesn't sit flat and it's actually floating off the desk
    - The 9-cell battery doesn't fit properly and moves about 2mm when you grab and shake it
    - The lock switch on the battery release button doesn't hold its position and moves out of its locked position with very litle effort
    - There's some sort of plastic piece stuck within the computer and I can hear it rattling about when I shake the computer lightly
Yeah, there's much more to the chassis of my X201 that just the cracked plastic housing.
