Casting - Class.cast() anyone?

Hi,
I try to cast an object to a class which I don't know excatly at compile time. I think, Class.cast() is made for that. However, it won't compile and I don't know why.
Here is some sample code for reproducing my problem:
        JComponent thing = new JButton();
        Class thingClass = Class.forName("javax.swing.JButton");
        thingClass.cast(thing).setText("blurb");this yields:
test.java:11: cannot find symbol
symbol  : method setText(java.lang.String)
location: class java.lang.Object
        thingClass.cast(thing).setText("blurb");so Class.cast() returns an object, but (at runtime) this is an instance of a specific class. What do I miss?

The hint to go for reflection was the right thing to do. So the sample code looks now like the following (there are some exceptions to catch):
        JComponent thing = new JButton();
        Class thingClass = Class.forName("javax.swing.JButton");;
        Method methodSetText = thingClass
                .getMethod("setText", new Class [] {String.class});
        methodSetText.invoke(thing, new Object[] {"blurb",});thanks.

  • How to achive the functionality of Class.cast method in Java 1.4.2

    Hi Everyone!!
    Does anyone know of an api or a class that would let you achieve the same functionality of Class.cast method, i am using Java 1.4.2.
    Thanks,
    Pratik

    well i have bunch of code that is written for 1.5,
    but it need to be work with 1.4 as well.obviously, but what is your code doing that you need to use Class.cast functionality? There is a relatively specialized use for this method, and I don't see all that many programs using it. It basically allows you to cast to an anonymous object to the class defined by your Class object, which is only necessary if you don't really know what class your Class object represents. I'm not saying there isn't a need for it in some apps, but I'm just curious what you're doing...

  • Casting Classes in jsp

    [att1.html]

    Use byte array output stream to serialize into. Ask it for the byte array.
              You now have an object (the byte array) that contains the serialized form of
              the object that you serialized.
              Pick a name to store that byte[] under. I assume if you encountered a class
              cast exception that you already have a name picked. Store the byte[]
              instead of the original object. Put it in using setAttribute.
              Now where you take the object out with getAttribute, you have to instead
              instantiate a byte array input stream and an object input stream on top of
              that and bring that object back to life.
              I suggest encapsulating all of this so you can get rid of it if deploying to
              other servers or when WL fixes the class loading. It's only about 20 lines
              of code total.

              Hi Cameron,
              You are right in saying that the soultions are :-
              To avoid this problem, you can serialize the objects that you store (instead
              of the object themselves). You can also take the classes out of the
              WAR/servletclasses directory and add them to the base classpath (not
              advised, but can work). You can also use "built in" classes (like
              java.lang.whatever) instead of your own, since they are loaded by the system
              class loader. I'd suggest searching the JSP and Servlet newsgroups here for
              "class loader" and "classloader". You'll find plenty of problems and some
              solutions.
              I do not know and maybe i have not researched enough how to put the
              objects after serializing them in the session where i get the hashtable
              from.
              But just to tell you how we solved the dreaded classcast or at least how
              we think we solved it is the follows :-
              We had .java files also in the classpath with the .class files. We deleted
              the
              .java files and it worked ??
              Does that make ay sense to you ??
              Thanks and Regards

              Why do java objects need to be casted ?
              Why do objects not know who they are ???
              I mean what the point of having collection classes
              like Vectors, Hashtables store everything as an Object. WHY ???
              I would be very happy to know the answer.
              Coming from a smalltalk background and knowing that collection
              classes are so important to devloping large applications in OO,
              it is difficult to see why every object must be casted.
              I was doing this casting to get objects from collection classes for last
              several months ,though not appreciating it very much.
              Today one of my JSP fails with a ClassCastException.
              The scenario is this :-
              I have an object stored in a HashTable , let us call this "X".
              In the JSP i am getting the object from the hashtable and
              casting it like this :-
              X y = (X) hashtable.get(key);
              I get a ClassCastException.
              Now if i do like this: -
              System.out.println("Object :" +hashtable.get(key) )
              X y = (X) hashtable.get(key);
              It gives me this:-
              Object : X@234e
              ClassCastException
              Now , i am at a complete loss to understand why ??
              I would great appreciate if anyone has any answers.

  • Class Cast Expection

    I am trying to use the sample cciBlacbox JCA Resource adapters provided by sun and am getting the problem described below. I am using Weblogic 7.0.
              1. From a stateless EJB I am calling the 'execute(InteractionSpec interactionSpec, Record record, Record record2)' method of an instance of class CciInteraction which implements javax.resource.cci.Interaction.
              2. To the above 'execute' method, I pass an instance of the class CciInteractionSpec which is implementing javax.resource.cci.InteractionSpec
              3. In the above 'execute' method when I typecast the parameter 'interactionSpec' to CciInteractionSpec (the class implementing javax.resource.cci.InteractionSpec), I get a ClassCastException.
              Has anyone one faced the above problem or have any clue as to what could be the problem?
              Thanks
              Rajesh

    Hi Tony,
              We have an implementation class of "InteractionSpec". This has all
              methods(InteractionSpec + some our own) implemented. This implementation
              calss is "myInteractionSpec".
              We have an implementation class for "Interaction". This class is
              "myIntertactionImpl".
              When we are calling "execute" method on "myInteractionImpl" from EJB, we are
              passing an instance of "myInteractionSpec".
              Inside myInteractionImpl.execute(), We are casting to "myInteractionSpec",
              like below
              ========================================
              public Record execute(InteractionSpec ispec, Record input)
              throws AEResourceException, ResourceException
              myInteractionSpec spec = (myInteractionSpec)ispec;
              ========================================
              But it is perfectly working for me. But We have added our connector jar in
              the server class path. From the begining we are testing this way. It is not
              only supports weblogic but other servers also.May be because of I added
              connector jar in the calsspath, it is working for me. I have also saw your
              postings "saying defect". Unknowingly I am following the workaround of
              weblogic, Thats what I feel why I am not getting this class cast exception.
              I am testing the connector as a standlone RAR and not with an EAR?. I am not
              clear How are you doing, is it same?
              However, Thanks for inforamtion.

  • View Criteria in ADF Query Panel with Table-Class Cast Exception

    Hi,
    I am getting Class Cast Exception when using view criteria for ADF Query Panel with Table. The version I am using is 11g Release 1(11.1.1.2.0)
    Here is what I did:
    1. created a view criteria on a view object
    2. all are optional
    3. all are Strings
    3. Dragged the view criteria as a query component (ADF Query panel with Query table) on to the design layout
    and the error when I clicked the Search button is:

    Hi Frank.
    I'm using JDev 11.1.1.3.0 as you suggest the error is no longer present in the latest version.
    I can pick my query from the "Saved Search" pick list on the QueryPanel list of queries just fine, and it sets up the filter properly, but when I press the "Search" button, I get the same reported error...

  • Class Cast Exception in a custom adapter processing module

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a Custom adapter module in my file adapter as a Local enterprise Bean.
    I have taken the "ConvertCRLFfromToLF" sample given by SAP as a reference, created an EJB module project, and deployed the enterprise archive to the J2EE engine.
    However, i am getting a Class Cast Exception in the Adapter Engine for my communication channel.
    Any help on this will much appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Renjith.

    HI,
    Managed to solve this..this was due to the additional jars which was included by the Developer Studio in the EAR file. We have to remoce the jars from the EAR, change the application.xml and sap_manifest.mf files to give reference to the jars already deployed in the J2EE engine.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Renjith

  • Difference between narrow() method usage and simple class cast for EJB

    Hi,
    I have a very simple question:
    what is the difference between PortableRemoteObject.narrow(fromObj,
    toClass) method usage and simple class cast for EJB.
    For example,
    1)
    EJBObject ejbObj;
    // somewhere in the code the home.create() called for bean ...
    ABean a = (ABean)PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ejbObj,ABean.class);
    OR
    2)
    EJBObject bean;
    // somewhere in the code the home.create() called for bean ...
    ABean a = (ABean)ejbObj;
    Which one is better?
    P.S. I'm working with WL 6.1 sp2
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

    Which one is better?(1) is mandated by the spec. It is required because CORBA systems may
    not have sufficient type information available to do a simple case.
    P.S. I'm working with WL 6.1 sp2 You should always use PRO.narrow()

  • Class Cast Exception

    Hi
    I got class cast exception here
    String value = String.valueOf
    (((IPrivateMaterialApplicationView.IMaterial_InputElement)(wdContext.nodeMaterial_Input().nodeT_Matno_in().getElementAt(i))).getMatnr());
              valueSet.put(value,value);
    Thanks & Regards
    Ravi Shankar B

    Ravi,
    the cause of this issue is that
    wdContext.nodeMaterial_Input().nodeT_Matno_in().getElementAt(i)
    does not return an instance of type
    IPrivateMaterialApplicationView.IMaterial_InputElement
    Check what type is returned by this method (in NWDS place your cursor over the method and the return type is displayed) and cast to that type.
    Regards
    Sebastian

  • Class cast exception using Finder method

    Hello. I'm new to J2EE. I have set up one entity bean but am having trouble
    with my current one.
    Basically, I have two finder methods:
    public ShareHistory findByPrimaryKey(Integer historyId)
            throws FinderException, RemoteException;
        public Collection findByShare(String shareId)
             throws FinderException, RemoteException; findByPrimaryKey works fine, but findByShare causes a class cast exception in java.lang.String.
    The stack trace in the server logs shows that it is my ejbActivate method in my entity bean causing the problem:
    public void ejbActivate() {
          //String numberString = (String) context.getPrimaryKey();
          //historyId = new Integer(numberString);
        historyId = (Integer) context.getPrimaryKey();
        }The stack trace from my client shows that the class cast exception occurs
    in the client at the System.out.println("shareid" + ": " + sh.getShareId());
    line:
    Collection c = sharesHistoryHome.findByShare("DCAN");
                     Iterator i = c.iterator();
                          while (i.hasNext()) {
                         ShareHistory sh = (ShareHistory) i.next();
                    System.out.println("shareid" + ": " + sh.getShareId());
                    System.out.println("value" + ": " + sh.getValue());
                     System.out.println("time" + ": " + sh.getTime());
                     System.out.println("date" + ": " + sh.getDate());
                     }//whileAs you can see I tried casting to a string in ejbactivate, but that simply causes an Integer class cast exception during findByprimaryKey instead. How do I allow both Integer and String objects to be used?
    Also I am a bit confused as to why the String passed to findByShare(String) is being used in context.getPrimaryKey() in the first place (if that is actually what's happening).

    Oops my FindByShare method was returning a collection of shareId's (strings) instead of a collection of Integer primary keys, which would explain the class cast exception.

  • (Class cast Exception)Problem while loading data fro database in java class

    Dear all,
    Please help me...to solve this
    I have a database having two columns of String and Date Types.
    In my java code i was trying to load the data to a UI.
    I am successfull in loading the String type value.
    But while loading date field value,is showing Class cast Exception.
    What i am doing is Getting the values from database to a String[] array.
    So my question is how to
    get the Date field as date field itself,Then convert it to a String..Then put it in to String[] array...
    Any body please help...If any one want more clarification in question i will give......

    Hi,
    I am using GWT to display my data in a Grid.
    So it will accept a Single two dimensional String array....Here i have one as String and other as Date.
    So i was trying to get each row in a sindle dimensional array array[] then store it in a list.
    Iteration goes up to 10 rows.After i am setting it in to a list
    ie list.add(array);
    Now while returning this list i am doing this
    "return (String[][])list.toArray(new String[0][]);"
    When i tried to get the date element to String array it is showing class cast exception. When i tried with toString() method it is showing the same problem.

  • Class Cast exception when clicking Search Button in Query component

    Hi
    We have to implement the Query component in ADF programmatically.. We are using Toplink as the Model layer for ADF.
    We followed the Web User Interface Guide for ADF development, Chapter 12 (Using Query Components) for the same.
    We already have implemented the following classes:
    1) QueryModel
    2) QueryDescriptor
    3) AttributeDescriptor
    4) ConjuctionCriterion
    5) AttributeCriterion etc.
    We are able to see the Search panel in UI with selected fields in Basic as well as Advanced mode.
    When we click on Search button, we are getting Class Cast exception.
    The stacktrace of the exception is below:
    <LifecycleImpl> <_handleException> ADF_FACES-60098:Faces lifecycle receives unhandled exceptions in phase INVOKE_APPLICATION 5

    I am working on a project that utilize Oracle Ultra Search that will crawl and tag documents in the database.
    The initial code that uses pure JDBC was working fine, but when we switch to get database connection from dataSource, we are getting classCast exception inside Oracle's ultra search. The problems is that the class we get from dataSource.getConnection() returns
    "weblogic.jdbc.wrapper.JTSConnection_oracle_jdbc_driver_T4CConnection". But Oracle UltraSearch is not expecting that.
    Is there anyway to unwrap the connection that we get from dataSource ? I tried casting to OracleConnection,
    assign the connection to "oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CConnection" without any success.
    Any help would be appricated.
    ThanksHi Gary. If the code you want to run is running inside WebLogic, such as in a JSP,
    then look for our documentation on our JDBC extension 'getVendorConnection()". It
    will get you a direct Oracle connection for their mis-declared UltraSearch
    classes (they declare they take java.sql.Connection, but they really demand a
    concrete thin driver connection. No other Oracle driver will be given a chance).

  • Class Cast Exception running Kodo JCA in Weblogic 8.1

    Hi,
    I have a stateless session EJB that accesses Kodo through the JCA adapter.
    The database I'm connecting to is mysql.
    The problem I'm having is that the persistence manager throws a class cast
    exception when trying to commit the transaction. See below for the stack
    trace. I suspect it has something to do with the mapping, but the error
    doesn't give me enough information to tell.
    Any idea where to start looking to solve this problem?
