Cat[alog Software for InDesign]

Hello,
I hope this is the right place  to post this question
I'm looking for a solution to make catalogues for  my company. We are planning on using InDesign together with a plugin of  some kind that allows for data import from our database and automated  layout based on templates/snippets. Currently, we are looking at Cacidi  Extreme and EasyCatalog with ODBC-, pagination- and xml-modules. Can  anybody give me some pros/cons and comparisons between the two? Why pay  more for Cacidi, which features do I get that I'll be missing in  EasyCatalog with the above mentioned plugins?

  • Is there a software for InDesign that will translate my english text into spanish text

I have InDesign files in English text. Is there a software that will translate text into Spanish?
    Thanks,
    Sharon

It's well worth paying someone who knows both languages well to do the translating.
With software translation, at best, you get a rough translation. At worst, (especially when you can't read the language you are translating to), you could get something like this:

  • Blacklining software/plug ins for InDesign Mac

Annoyingly some of my clients want to have changes displayed on the proof. I have been doing this manually which is rather slow using character styles with strikethrough and colour.
InCopy (which I dont own) does have a change tracking feature but only in galley view and that is pretty useless for me mostly because in galley view tables dont display and since I do a lot of annual reports I have a lot of tables. I have to admit that Words change tracking is much, much better.
I have found some blacklining software which costs around GBP700 which is really high-cost and I have been resisting buying it.
Does anyone know of blacklining software for InDesign on the Mac so I can look into buying it.
    Thanks

Thank you all for this wonderful information. I have been experimenting with the various options in Acrobat and it looks like this is the solution.
I doubt very much I can persuade anyone to do markups in Acrobat - thats a bit newfangled for them. Instead I get a faxed pdf of their handwritten markups - it creates an image so there is no text. If they are feeling generous theyll do an Excel table or two so I can insert into the INDD document.
A few minutes ago someone phoned about possible (and lots of) new work which will involve blacklining a lot of proofs - and I can now do it easily. Hope I get this work.
Many thanks for making my day.

  • Which is better software for brochures and PDF forms ? Photoshop or InDesign ?

Which is better software for brochures and PDF forms ? Photoshop or InDesign ? and why ?

If you are going to be making a lot of brochures, with photos, you probably want both. Photoshop to edit the photos, and InDesign to assemble and layout images with text.

  • What software for print production (magazine)? InDesign or other...

I am new in the field of print production. Do you have a favorite software for this field? I do have CS3 but is the Web premium and it does not have InDesign. Should I buy it? Or, is there another one more user-friendly and easy to work with printing companies.

    Hi Numacr,
This is a question with a potentially long answer. I am a professional designer and web developer. I've done all forms of print production and web production.
In a nutshell... the industry standards change from time to time. Fortunately for you, they've recently changed over the past few years. Now, unless you have publications or ads going to a printer in a small town somewhere with older presses and such, you will be just fine with the Adobe CS3 design suite.
Industry standard software are as follows:
    Adobe Photoshop
    Adobe Illustrator
    Adobe InDesign
    Adobe Acrobat Pro
Unless you're doing large format printing (ie. banners, billboards, etc.) you are pretty much able to send a high-res PDF file. Sometimes you can even send the InDesign or Illustrator files to the printer.
I'd also suggest joining an InDesign group online... go to Adobe's website to check it all out.
The other option for a page layout program is Quark, but I wouldn't recommend it. They've only recently come around to improve their software, but it's too late. Pretty much everyone is now using Adobe InDesign.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am trying to install a trail for InDesign CC to finish a project soon. I downloaded Creative Cloud, the app is in my folder, but it won't open and when I try to download InDesign an error pops up saying Adobe is trying to install malware.

I just installed Creative Cloud in order to download a trial for InDesign. I have the app icon for CC, but it won't open. When it was in my toolbar (on a mac) it just sat there loading for about 15 minutes. I tried restarting it but it won't open at all now. I also tried downloading an InDesign trail and it won't open at all. When I click for it to download an error message pops up saying Adobe is trying to instal malware and asks me if I want to continue. When I say yes, it doesn't do anything. I have a brochure that needs to go to the client by 4pm today! EEK!

Sydneybling it does sound like your security software is interfering with the process of installing and utilizing your Adobe Creative applications.  I would recommend that you try temporarily disabling your security software and utilizing the directions listed at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html to install InDesign CC.

  • Where can I find a Javascript developer for InDesign scripting?

    Hi
    as
I apologise in advance for posting on a technical site for InDesign developers, but our company (Dorling Kindersley) is looking for a full-time permanent developer to join our team. I've been looking for some months now and I would really appreciate some advice on where or how InDesign scripters look for work, as our role is quite specialised.
We can offer an attractive package and although I'm biased as I work there, Dorling Kindersley really is a nice place to work - fun, friendly and super creative. I would welcome advice or for someone to approach me if they're interested.
It's advertised as full-time and permanent but for the right candidate we can offer flexible working conditions.

    Heather Hughes
Publishing Technologies Software Developer (permanent role)
We’re looking for an enthusiastic individual keen to join our Creative Technical Support team, to create, maintain and enhance software tools for our creative and operations teams around the globe. This is a permanent full-time role.
Each tool is a script or collection of scripts that allows DK to automate their creative workflows, from checks that spreads and covers have been created correctly to automated deployment of colour settings.
The ideal candidate will have solid experience of using scripting to command Mac OS and Adobe products, have strong analytical skills and be curious, patient and willing to learn new skills. If you have design, publishing or print experience this will be an asset, but we can help fill in the gaps with training and guidance. You’ll need to be a ‘people’ person as most of the people you’ll come into contact with won’t have a software development background.
Not only do you get to work next door to Covent Garden, in the heart of London, but  you’ll be welcomed into a small team of  friendly and irreverent geeks, who are experts in Adobe applications and workflows  and helping creative teams overcome their technical problems. Lunchtimes are often spent getting out and sampling the local cuisine in the vast number of restaurants and eateries around the office.
You’ll get to work in a relaxed, sociable and friendly environment, working alongside our award-winning creative staff to develop their ideas for tools and get satisfaction from freeing them up to be even more creative.
    Skills required:
Excellent skills and experience in using Javascript
Experience of working with Macs and Adobe applications preferred
Other programming skills and experience an advantage, e.g.  Applescript, Adobe InDesign Document Object Model, XML structure, TDD, Shell Script, Obj-C, C++ and Xcode
Ability to learn new technologies swiftly
    Why work for DK?
DK is an award-winning global publisher of distinctive, highly visual products for adults and children alike. We have a reputation for producing innovative design and digital products.
Everything we make from books, eBooks and apps give unrivalled clarity to topics with a unique combination of words and pictures, put together to spectacular effect.
We produce content for consumers in over 52 countries and 42 languages from offices in Delhi, London, Melbourne, Munich, New York and Toronto. We celebrate our 40th birthday this year, and we are enormously proud to be the world’s leading illustrated reference publisher.
You’ll  be joining an awesome and highly talented, diverse and creative team, in an environment where everyone is encouraged to learn and coach new skills, as well as having the opportunity to grow and develop with people who are passionate about what they do.

    Hi Heather,
I think you've found probably the best place possible to post this opening.
I personally am interested, and would like to pursue this further. My email is admin [at] freelancebookdesign.com

I have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall all of my programs. What do I do about Creative Cloud? I also still need access to CS6 (I have a Marksware converter for InDesign to Quark).
This is a MacBook Pro 15" (Model number A1286) running Mavericks. Hard drive is fine but system software has been corrupted. I cannot simply restore from Time Machine as it will copy the corrupt system.
Will I have to find all of my serial numbers before I can launch any of the programs?
    Thanks

For the Cloud, you log in to your paid Cloud account and download & install the same way you did the first time

If you have the perpetual license version of CS6 you install from your original media and use your serial number

  • Bridge place command no longer works for indesign 2014

Bridge place command no longer works for indesign 2014. It only gives Photoshop as an option. How can I get all other Adobe programs listed under Place ?

Your post sounds like an InDesign question.
Due to the current unavailability of clairvoyants and mind-readers in the forum, we respectfully request you supply sensible, complete details.
A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

  • Best Autorun software for making digital portfolio?

Best Autorun software for making digital portfolio?

'Best' is a subjective judgement depending on your needs. For brochures you have, for example, InDesign and Apple's Pages.
Good place to look for software:
    http://www.macupdate.com/
And for free alternatives to some popular software packages:

(If you see an ad there for something called MacKeeper, ignore it and on no account install it - it is malware.)

  • Hex character value for InDesign frame break

I have been able to identify that the hex value for a carriage return in InDesign is "000D". Is there a specific hex value for InDesign's frame break character?

Through internal magic. There are more codes that are "magic" inside an InDesign document. \u0016 for example, is the code for a table, and you can search for it too. But you cannot insert a table by putting "\x16" in the Replace field. Same with anchored object -- \uFFFC -- and various other magic markers.
I promised "a tip or two" but the only way to bring a frame break in from beyond ID itself is through a Search-and-Replace in ID after you loaded your text. Insert some unique code in your software in place of these frame breaks (something simple like "{FrameBreak}" ought to do it; unless your text may already contain this particular sequence, then you have to make up something on your own), and after placing the text into ID, search for this text and replace it with the code "^R", which is "Frame Break" according to the Find/Replace Text drop down menu.

  • How to package DPS Tools for InDesign CC

    Hi,
We are using the creative cloud packager to deploy Adobe CC at my College. I tried integrating the DPS tools version 32 for Indesign CC 2014 :
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=182&platform=Macintosh
But it doesn't work. Here's what I tried
Start Indesign and go in Help > updates. Doesn't work because it is greyed out
Building a new package and give it the path to the patch folder (AdobeDigitalPublishingCC2014)
Simply double click on the patch on one of the computers. Doesn't work, it says that the updates are disabled.
Is there a way to enable software updates once Adobe CC is deployed? If not, how can we package the updates in our installer.
    Thank you!
    Martin

    Hi dshink,
Kindly check : Disable auto-updates | Application Manager | IT administrators
Please revert if the problem persists.

  • Trying to book ACE exam for Indesign CC - but not available

Why is an ACE exam for Indesign CC not available and when will it be? I have been trying to book it via Pearson Vue for some time but no luck. Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Dreamweaver are all available as ACE exams for CS6 and CC but no Indesign. Are you dropping Indesign from the ACE curriculums?

    Thanks Rajshree
The link you posted directs to the CS6 exam, I was wondering why CC isn't available for Indesign (but is for other softwares). I have already contacted Pearson Vue and they said that Adobe hasn't supplied them with any Indesign CC exam and to contact Adobe regarding why.
I tried to contact Adobe but they said that they could only offer software support and didn't have info about the ACE process.
I'm thinking this is a dead end.
Thanks again for your reply thou
